Straight Battle

Rate this book
"I’ve always been interested in women, so why can’t I stop thinking about Tyler?" - Gage

Buying a house was supposed to be a good investment. Too bad I bit off more than I can chew. Between my job at the bank and my utter lack of home improvement skills, I’m in way over my head. Then a friend suggests I hire a handyman. Enter Tyler.

Tyler is down on his luck after a recent divorce, and we strike a deal that he fixes my house while I give him room and board as part of his pay. He’s the perfect roommate, amazing at his job, and he quickly becomes one of my closest friends. But there’s something there, something I’ve never felt for another man before.

Tyler and I both thought we were straight, but that doesn’t stop the attraction that grows between us. Is it possible I found the person who could finally show me what love is?

***Straight Battle is double bi-awakening, opposites attract, hurt/comfort story featuring a former soldier with trust issues, a divorced handyman looking for a connection, a found family, and accidental feels. It is Book 1 in the Heroes at Home series, but can be read as a standalone.

What can I say about myself? It’s kind of like being the new kid in school and being asked to tell everyone a bit about yourself. Anyone else forget everything they’ve ever liked, thought of, and even their name in those moments?

A few facts about me; I’m a veteran, I’m Canadian, and I love books! I’ve been writing my own stories since I was eight and wrote my first novel at sixteen. I’m the first to admit those attempts weren’t my best work, but they started me on a journey of creating stories that has led me to fulfilling my dream of becoming an author. I’ve written and published in several genres under different names, but MM is by far my favorite, and I’m so happy to be able to share my stories with people today.

I currently live on Canada’s east coast with my kiddo and my cats. I have a shoe collecting addiction, and I enjoy taking long walks, discussions with friends, and reading anything and everything I can get my hands on.

⭐️ 2.5/5 🌶 2/5 — Military-civilian housemates-to-lovers with low-ish angst and mild spice, but the repetitive writing makes the story feel stuck in a loop. 🔁🫠

This is a double bi-awakening story, so both Gage and Tyler are experiencing their first relationships with men. The idea is fun, but the execution didn’t land for me. The sexual exploration felt very “turn-based”—one chapter Tyler goes down on Gage, the next Gage goes down on Tyler, and so on until they finally have penetrative sex. The scenes felt copy-paste with too-similar wording, so instead of progression, it was like rereading the same thing from the other POV. 🪞🥱

Outside the bedroom, about half their experiences also mirrored each other. Their reactions to discovering new feelings and attraction to men were written so similarly that it blurred together. The other half—rooted in their different personalities and backstories—helped a bit, but overall the dual POV felt like a single POV. And since single POV romances rarely work for me, that brought my enjoyment down even more. 😔

Tyler’s self-esteem and body image struggles dragged on for too long. I understood where he was coming from, but the constant repetition of his insecurities wore me out after a while. 😮‍💨

A few examples of the repetitions:

Quote:
“What’s happening here?”
“No idea. I just... I don’t fucking know.”
“I’m straight.”
“So am I. But my dick doesn’t seem to remember that.”
“What the fuck is happening?” he asked again.
“I have no fucking clue. But there’s something, right? I’m not crazy? I’m not imagining things?”
“No. No, you’re not crazy. I don’t get it, but yeah. There’s something.”

Quote:
“What’s happening here? We’re both straight men. Why does this feel good?”
“I don’t know. But it does.”
“Yeah. It does. Have you ever done this before?”
“No. Never even thought about it.”
“Me either. Never. How did you know I’d be okay with that?”
“I didn’t. That’s why I asked you not to punch me.”
“So why did you risk it?”
“That’s a good question. I went to Luke’s a few days ago, and he suggested that I might have a crush on you. I thought he was talking crazy, but then the idea got in my head...”
“And that’s why you’ve been avoiding me?”
“Yeah. I was all worked up, trying to figure it out, and I didn’t know how to act around you.”
“I’ve been feeling things too. Things I couldn’t explain or understand. I didn’t know what to do about it, but it’s not just you.”
-

Quote (Gage's POV):

I waited, my body on fire and my breathing shallow, as he slicked himself up with a generous amount of lube. When he was done, he leaned forward and lined himself up with my hole.
“Ready for me?”
“I’m ready.”
He slowly pushed in.
My body wasn’t sure what to do with that, and I tensed.
“You want me to stop?” He stroked one hand over the inside of my thigh.
“No. Keep going. I want this. Want you.”

“There, that’s all of me. You’ve got all of me in you, babe.”

“Let me get something to clean you off with,” he whispered against my neck.
Reluctantly, I let him go, my entire body oversensitive and tingling.

He came back a moment later, a washcloth in his hands. He sat on the bed next to me, gently wiped me clean, then tossed the cloth aside.
“Come here,” I said roughly.
He came to me, snuggling right into my side so I could hold him close.
-

Quote (Tyler's POV):

He moved closer, leaning over me and holding his body up with one hand as he lined himself up with my hole.
A moment later, the broad head of his dick pressing against me.
I was loosened up from his teasing, but the moment he tried to breach me, my body locked up tight.
“Fuck,” I muttered, staring up at the ceiling as pain lanced through me.
Gage pulled back.
“No, keep going. I want it,” I protested, dropping my gaze to his.

“There, that’s all of me.” He leaned down and pressed a kiss against my lips as he held still, giving me a chance to adjust.

“Do you want me to stop?”
“No. I just need a second.”
“Hook your legs around me,” he suggested, shifting his body around so he could still stroke me off as he lay over me.

“Let me get a cloth,”
I let go of him reluctantly, rolling onto my back as he climbed off the bed and padded into the bathroom. Then a moment later, he came back with a cloth in one hand, his stomach shiny where he’d wiped himself down.

He sat on the edge of the mattress, his touch gentle as he cleaned me. He tossed the cloth aside, lay down next to me, and pulled me back into his arms.

Fluffy double bi-awakening with 2 mature MCs.

This book has all the ingredients to become a 5 star read: 2 likable protagonists, both straight, who fall in love and discover each other together.

Why didn’t it work then, you ask? I’m not entirely sure. Partly probably because I listened to the audiobook. It’s my firm belief that good narrators add a lot to my enjoyment of a book, but the opposite is true, as well. This book was narrated by two different persons: J.F. Harding as the voice of Gage, a former military in his thirties who needs his house renovated. And John Solo, the voice of Tyler, recently divorced and very broke handyman who moves in with Gage and works on his house.

J.F. Harding is great, as always, he fits Gage perfectly. John Solo… not so much. The more the book progressed, the more he got on my nerves. He made Tyler sound so… inconsistent. He either had a very soft, slightly whiny, unsure voice, or flipped to growling and being bossy. On top of that, he method-acted during sex scenes and that made me roll my eyes in embarrassment.

I know, I probably should have switched to reading, but I needed something to keep my mind occupied and my hands free, so listening it was.

As to the book itself: it was… ok. A bit repetitive, especially when it comes to sex scenes (I mean - do we really need to read in great detail how each of them felt during giving head, or being penetrated for the first time? Their experiences were so identical, you could have swapped them). But it was… nice. Low angst, low drama, lots of inner monologues and self discovery. Nothing really memorable, but nice enough if you need your mind occupied.

Not quite a recommendation, but a nice and easy read nevertheless.

3.5 stars! GFY, mutual bi-awakening, older MCs, low angst, steamy m/m romance. Writing was a little repetitive, but MCs were cute and relatable. ❤️ Looking forward to the next one in the series. Highly recommended to all fans of light fluffy m/m romances 👍🏻👍🏻

“Can I kiss you?” I asked in a rush, the words bleeding together. “What?” Tyler gaped at me. “Come again?” “Can I kiss you?” I asked, a little more slowly this time. He blinked. “Are you fucking with me right now? Or are you serious?” “I’m serious.”

I’m sorry but I’ll never get tired of two “straight” men figuring out gay sex and feelings it just hitsssssss

I really liked this and how they were older MC’s and one was plus size and really great mental health representation with the army PTSD. I’m excited to listen to the rest of the series.

*** I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.***

Straight Battle is a sweet story featuring both a double bi awakening and friends to lovers. I loved how little drama and the connection between the two main characters as they navigate their newfound feelings for one another. Straight Battle features two guys, who are in need of help both professionally and personally.

Tyler is recently divorced and needs contract work, while Gage bought a fixer-upper and needs help who the construction. They both have friends in common who think they could help one another.

Soon Tyler and Gage are spending a lot of time together, which leads to a friendship and eventually feelings start to develop, causing confusion for both guys. This low angst story is swoon-worthy due to all the feelings both develop, which leads to such a sweetly romantic story.

2.75 stars story. I loved the MCs. They were both awesome and I love how affectionate and sometimes needy towards each other. But I would have preferred a slower burn with a touch of angst. At times the dialogue come off "soapboxish". The sex scenes were hawt!!! But some of the scenes leading up to them had me *rme*. Overall I don't regret reading this book but I don't think I will continue with the series,,,,unless one of the synopsis grabs me.

3.5⭐️

This was a none threatening cute bi-awakening story of two dudes in their 30s. Nothing extortionary and its not a bad book in any right. Its just an okay type of book, which is not a bad thing. Tyler and Gage were actually kinda sorta cute together. I love a bi-awakening, especially when the two men are both straight. Its a good time, I feel like something was missing for me personally. I cant put my finger on it through. Like yeah it was adorable, but maybe it felt a little too easy for me? Or if not too easy because low agnst is not a bad thing, I felt like maybe I needed more romance between the two? I dont know girl, something was missing for me and I cant remember now that its been 3 days. My memory is like a god damn gold fish. Anyways, I still say hey go read it if it sounds interesting. Like its pretty good, just missing that sparkle Im looking for personally. Also, why is it called Straight Battle? Why is that the title? Is it because they both were straight and Gage was in the military? If so, I dont like the title babe, doesnt work for me.

This was very enjoyable overall, this author is a good one that I'll definitely read more of in the future.

Gage and Tyler are both seemingly straight. At 33 and 38 respectively, they've never been attracted to another man in their lives.

But Gage bought a house that is a fixer upper, meaning it was fairly cheap overall to buy it, and Gage has little know how on how to actually fix it up.

Tyler is a little down on his luck. At 38, it's been six months since his divorced was finalized, and he's back living at home with his parents, as he lost basically everything he had from that divorce, financially, and it's hard for him to get work as a jack of all trades.

But when his twin brother, Trevor suggests he move in with Gage to help around the house for no rent and minimum wage, who is friends with Doc, Gage's best friend, who also suggests to Gage that Tyler moves in to help with the house, they both are weary but agree to meet.

They hit it off and Tyler movies in, and soon after, they strike up a friendship that quickly turns into more, which they have to navigate having thought they were straight all their lives.

I enjoyed these two together, they were sweet and sexy together. I didn't love this quite as much as my first outing with this author, but I still very much enjoyed it. There wasn't a ton of plot other than these two figuring out how to navigate a relationship with a man for the first time, which made this not as exciting in some parts, but the plot was still enough to keep me invested in the story.

So while I wish we had gotten a little more in some parts of this, overall it was still solid and entertaining and I very much enjoyed it. I think - I might be wrong on this - this was the author's first published novel, so it's understandable that there were areas to improve upon. I'll definitely be reading more from this promising author in the future.

So definitely two thumbs up, and I definitely recommend this. Onto the next!

This is a 3.75⭐ book, but I've thought about it and I'm rounding it up.
Based on the blurb, some discouraging reviews and maybe the very start of the book you'll feel like you're in for a boring story, but I can assure you that's not the case.

Tyler and Gage are a really good couple. Their story is well told. What really got me was the simplicity and the emotional intimacy in their connection and for that I think the story deserves a higher rating.

🟢 Former military, now banker/unemployed and divorced handyman
🔵 Age gap 33/38
🟣 Ripped, hot fitness guy/mid guy, dad bod (interesting pairing)
🟡 Employer/employee and roommates to really good friends to GFY
🟢 A lot of side characters, not so good
🌶️ Sex scenes are descriptive and quite repetitive, but they're intimate and I loved them; first times; rimming, oral, a lot of kissing and cuddling, penetrative; both vers (flip)

I think I liked Gage and Tyler’s story so much because it felt so real and down to earth. It’s simple, with no unnecessary drama and their sexual awakening was well told. It may not have been dramatic, but it was raw, realistic, and I loved every bit of it.
I especially enjoyed the sense of familiarity and domesticity they built together, it made their connection feel all the more genuine.

Gage is a 33-year old vet who's now working at a bank. He's got a good education, a good job, he's financially well off, looks great, has a good support system of 3 gay best friends who have served with him and he's still processing his time in the military after more than a decade. He's also straight and has only fleeting relationships and hook-ups.

Then there's Tyler. Gage bought an old Craftsman style house that needs renovation. He doesn't know how to do it, so his friend group recommends Tyler, who's Gage's friend's twin brother. Tyler is just a simple man that isn't settled in life, he's broke, out of a nasty divorce and out of work, the complete opposite of his twin brother or this friend group and not only that, he's a serial monogamist.

Gage hires him, Tyler moves in and before long he’s not just renovating the house but also cooking for both. Their friendship builds naturally and they become really good friends.
Eventually Gage realizes he’s developing a crush on Tyler and things shift between them. They kiss, they experiment, and they both slowly ease into this new sexual and romantic chemistry between them.

The way their emotional and sexual intimacy develops is well written. I loved their touches, their first times, the excitement of this new reality of being with a man, the feelings that grew between them and how naturally they experienced everything together.
By the time they came out, it felt solid, inevitable, and deeply connected, like they were exactly where they were meant to be.

What takes away those stars for me are definitely dialogues with the side characters. Those were stilted, sometimes awkward, I didn't like them, but if you're looking for just a simple story of two very straight guys falling for each other and you don't mind a more simple story, this is a good one.

Cutesy double bi-awakening.

It’s a sweet premise, but the way the two MCs talked and acted felt a little…unrealistic maybe? I’m not quite sure how to phrase the way it came across. It definitely needs some editing for spelling, getting rid of some almost identical language in several scenes, and massively condensing the conversations with other characters.

Double bi awakening low angst books with still a little conflict are my absolute kryptonite so it’s not surprise that this book worked for me.

The progression in this book really worked for me. I liked how they started by becoming friends and got to know each other and then they realized that they were attracted to each other and they started a relationship with each other. I liked how they decided that they wanted each other and that they kept doing everything in their power to be together. All of the progression seemed very realistic and I very much enjoyed it.

I loved how we got to see both of their sexual exploration as sexual exploration is one of my favourite thing to read about in books, that part of the book really worked for me.

I loved everything about the set up of this book. I had a little trouble with connecting with the characters and I often felt like the book was telling me things a little too much instead of showing them to me. But I appreciated everything else about this book.

This one was a lot of fun to read and I really enjoyed reading it.

I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review

So I have something to admit: I kind of knew I wasn't necessarily going to like this book going into it. I wouldn't say that I have particularly high standards for m/m romances, but I am highly skeptical about gay-for-you romances because, well, no. I don't care how sweet it sounds, it does not happen. I am willing to suspend my disbelief while reading fiction, but there are some things that don't deserve any suspension of disbelief.

So why did I start a book that has two supposedly heterosexual men fall in love with one another? Well, the book has a few things I like in romances: house renovation (HGTV is like crack to me), military stuff, slightly older and world-worn characters (they are 38 and 33 respectively, and one is recently divorced). "I'll risk it," I decided.

I... am a little disappointed yet unsurprised. First, there aren't many descriptions of house renovations. Boo! But really, the main issue is the plot. The story is exceedingly direct - like, there's a little angst but virtually no tension as the characters go from meeting to having a happily ever after. We know they're going to be happy because there isn't any reason for them not to be happy. Even a scene featuring homophobia (because of course that needs to be present, sigh) is over within a page or two.

Some more critiques: the book needed some more editing; one character is a big, muscle-bound guy but he is described working out only once (guys like this live at the gym); sense of proportion is all off (they are in the six-foot range or 180-185cm yet one character mentions how he's always "the biggest person in the room" - uh? No?); for a series that's supposed to be based on former soldiers, this book barely mentions the military; and one of these supposedly heterosexual characters learns how to be good at gay sex from a freaking romance novel and yeah, no, that does not and will never happen. Sorry 'bout it.

I'm complaining a lot, yes, but it's honestly a pretty inoffensive book. There's a happily ever after, there's a lot of sexy time, there's a pretty decent description - yet no explicit naming - of demisexuality. Clearly I went into this book with some amount of skepticism. I mean, I dunno, I guess it's worth a read if you're into GFY romances. I'll consider reading more in the series, but I'm more likely to see if the author has written anything else.

I really enjoyed this. So it became somewhat predictable toward the end. Perfect world and all that. I'll leave the grit to the headlines thank you very much. Two mature men who find each other and fall in love, both straight men. I thought the author handled that scenario pretty well. I've lived it so I would know. This story falls well within the realm of possibility. I'm happy the author kept the realism, at least in that respect.

4.5 stars, rounded up.

I enjoyed the hell out of this book. I loved both Gage and Tyler, and I enjoyed watching them navigate their way through a relationship territory neither had ever thought they’d have before. The sex scenes were hot, even if they hadn’t been with another man before. They took turns learning as they went along. No matter what was happening with their sexual relationship, their friendship came first. It was really nice.

Overall, a great book, and a sweet read. I admit to going into it thinking it probably wouldn’t work for me because of the double GFY thing. Surprisingly, it did. It’s a very sweet romance with two very unique men. They were really good together.

Did not work for me on any level. DNF at 31%.

Grammar wise, the writing was okay, but the dialogue sounded off to me and the repetitive inner monologue had me skipping pages.

As for the MCs...both started checking each other out in a sexual way before there was any emotional connection at all. Considering both were completely straight until they laid eyes on each other, that didn't ring true.

Holy moly!! This was an outstanding story, sweet and no angst!! Gage has bought a house and he’s been trying to fix it up him self but quickly realizes he’s in over his head. Tyler is recently divorced and living back home with his parents, he needs to get back on his feet and move out. They are introduced by friends that both realize the guys can help each other out. I loved the friendship that formed between the men. I loved how the natural romantic development in the storyline! Loved, loved, loved Gage and Tyler!!! Overall, an outstanding read! The story was really well written, the pacing was smooth, highly recommend. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received. STRAIGHT BATTLE was an enjoyable read and it was fun to go back to Willow Dixon's first book. I liked both Gage and Tyler and their double bi-awakening was really sweet and spicy. I love the friendship they formed as roommates and how it shifted to more for each guy. Their individual POV voices were a little similar but their life experiences were really different so that helped distinguish them. I also enjoyed seeing the rest of Gage's friends and how they've truly built a family with each other.

It's hard to find a double bi-awakening that has no angst but this book accomplishes that. And, no. This is not a compliment.

Also, this may as well have been single POV based on how similar their experiences were.

This book was an easy, very low-angst read. The premise was cute and the MCs were likable. I just had a few issues that I couldn't get past. I didn't like the repetitiveness of them saying "we are straight" along with the "this is so fucked up" when they were getting intimate at the beginning. It was just said again and again to the point where it started to bother me. Also I didn't love how down on himself Tyler kept getting. I understand self-esteem issues but it was too much.

I would have liked a little bit more build-up. These two dove in pretty quickly, especially considering this was new for both of them.

Overall this was an ok read. Tyler & Gage were cute together. I'm curious to see how the rest of the series goes.

Side note: Can someone build me an attic library??

This story reminded me a lot of Crossroads by Riley Hart which is one of my all-time faves because of the double bi-awakening, close proximity and older man vibes of the story.

I enjoyed it overall. Yay for MCs who aren't super fit and have realistic bods for men in their late thirties.

My one critique is that think it would have been more believable if the transition to full blown romance had been slower since they moved physical pretty quickly for bi-awakening. I would have liked a bit more tension!

I will def be reading the next book the series :)

what a lovely book. This is a slow burn. friends to lovers.
Gage needs help with fixing up his hone. Enter Tyler he needs a new place to stay that is not
his parents home + work. Both meet trough common friends. It is a really sweet and low angst story plus i really dig that Tyler has not a sixpack but is a person with a Dad bod and that Gage loves his body (+1 Star) we need more books like that.

Audio - 4 stars
Pretty sure this was my first listen to both narrators and I quite enjoyed them, I would definitely listen to other audiobooks they've narrated. I still haven't figured out how to tell which narrator is playing which role so I looked at other reviews and came to the following determination.
JF Harding (Gage) - 4.5
I really liked this narrator's gruffer tone and the general way he spoke, it was incredibly easy to listen to for the most part, but the sibilant 's's were distracting at times.
John Solo (Tyler) - 3.5
This narrator was a lot more soft spoken, light and lyrical; he did perhaps too good of a job in conveying Tyler's "woe is me" attitude, he had a wry way of speaking that was harder to listen to for great lengths of time.

Story - 3.5 stars
Gage Andersen (33), retired military member / banker
Tyler James (38), handyman

I quite enjoyed this story, it had a great premise and the way Gage and Tyler initially became roommates then started hanging out together and getting closer just felt so natural, which surprised me as all too often I find the bi-awakening trope feels forced. I could have done with a little more showing instead of telling and a smidge more romance and hurt/comfort rather that straight lust earlier in the story, but that's a me problem. The story did feel it dragged a little through the middle, especially in the bedroom department, and was a tad repetitive. I know it's unbelievably unrealistic to expect porn star performances from first times, but they felt extremely awkward and too tit for tat in this case.

I loved how close Gage was with his buddies from the military and how they supported him in figuring out how to process what he was feeling almost as much as I loved the fact that Tyler confided in his twin brother's wife and she was just amazing. I liked how they didn't struggle to label or define things, just came to the realization that they were each other's person and embraced that fact (and each other!), it made me sigh.

I adore when couples help each other succeed so when Gage started helping Tyler make social media content showcasing his restoration and repair skills my heart just about burst, it's my absolute kryptonite.

I just loved this. This book was filled with so many feels and sweetness. Double bi-awakening and so much heat.

When Gage and Tyler meet, neither knows that their life is about to change irrevocably. They both think they are just doing what they need to get by. Gage has no idea how to fix up his house and Tyler is looking for work. It’s a match made in heaven.

When they start noticing each other in a romantic light, it was just so sweet. Neither really had an issue with it, they were just confused because they had never looked at another guy that way before. Once they confronted their changing feelings, it was so sexy. Their explorations were smoking hot. But the underlying romanticism of them together was wonderful. This was so genuinely written. I can’t tell you how many times I smiled throughout. It’s just a feel good, leave you with a happy feeling book. I adored it.

We meet several side characters. I loved that they didn’t overshadow our main story, but enhanced it in a way that was enjoyable. I cannot wait to read their stories as they come up.

I happily give this 5 stars.

*I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

I loved this story.

With Tylers shyness and Gages protectiveness, these two make a perfect couple.
They have the right blend of confusion and attraction, with the ideal backup in the form of family which means they have someone their to kick them into place when thry feel overwhelmed.

Gage opens Tylers life, and gives him everything he needs to feel like a proper partner, and Tyler provides Gage with all the love and comfort he didnt know he needed

Amazing!!!

I love this author and I’m super excited for this series. I think what makes this straight to gay story stand out from others was how the author wrote the situation with Gage’s work and how he dealt with it. There wasn’t a long drawn out high angst and drama moment. In fact there was a perfect smooth flow thanks to the supporting characters that Gage and Tyler had to talk things out with. I loved every bit of this.

This was such a nice feel-good story. Very low-angst, a soft bi-awakening x2 and a bit of found family. I'm a big Willow Dixon fan and I'm on a mission to read all of her books. I'd say this is the OG Willow, because it's one of her earlier books and while it's not her best, I still very much enjoyed it and I definitely will read the rest of this series ❤️
