The next tale in the Brotherband Chronicles--following the Brotherband and their ship, the Heron, in a battle against an Iberian pirate raiding ship!

The Herons are home in Skandia--preparing to celebrate two of their own and working on sea trials in the newly constructed Heron. But during a short excursion, they encounter an Iberian pirate ship raiding the coast of Sonderland, so Hal and his crew take action.

Though the Herons quickly triumph, the Iberians voice their fury at the Herons, vowing to take revenge. And soon they do--raiding the harbor and stealing or destroying as many ships as they can. Though there is little proof the Iberians are behind it, the Herons take their ship, the only one that has survived the raid--and race after their enemy in hot pursuit. They will take down these pirates and get justice--no matter what.

John Flanagan grew up in Sydney, Australia, hoping to be a writer. It wasn't until he wrote a highly uncomplimentary poem about a senior executive at the agency where he worked, however, that his talent was revealed. It turned out one of the company directors agreed with John's assessment of the executive, and happily agreed to train John in copywriting.

After writing advertising copy for the next two decades, John teamed with an old friend to develop a television sitcom, Hey Dad!, which went on to air for eight years.

John began writing Ranger's Apprentice for his son, Michael, ten years ago, and is still hard at work on the series.

He currently lives in a suburb of Manly, Australia, with his wife. In addition to their son, they have two grown daughters and four grandsons.

Sorry John, I feel like you're hitting the copy+paste a bit too hard these days. I get that Skandians like to party, but having a "successful mission" sandwiched between two parties at which Kloof munches on Erak's stick seems a bit familiar.

I finished this book about three days after starting it, which was less than a month ago, and I'm struggling to remember anything fantastic about it. The lack of any significant character development, the overuse of narrativium and the dearth of emotional engagement made this book underwhelming at best. I might have complained about how short it was, but I won't bother, because longer would not have been better.

I buy all your RA/BB/RR books out of habit, but it has been a long time since any of them touched my heart. I would rather wait two years and get a really good book at the end of it, than see you churn out more books of lower quality.

That said, I'm 38. I first read Ruins of Gorlan 16 years ago (and I still love it). While I'm not exactly the target audience, I do have nieces and nephews that love the books because I shared them with my sister, and I have a son of my own who will one day read them, so I hope you will take my thoughts into consideration.

Although this was an enjoyable story, I felt it lacked the intensity of the rest of the series. I also missed the humour that have been previous books. I was looking for more fun interactions between Erak and Hal...

Just thinking… I couldn’t think… just an episode of what happen but I guess there something lacking… just say reading too much but can’t grasp why do I still read… anyway so much of why this one is too prolonging, I guess, money talks… my opinion… write your own.

I poproszę więcej sag. Wciąż mi ich mało 🤩😆

I like this series and enjoyed this book. The plot the pirates devised was cunning. The scene with the actual stern chase was certainly gripping. At times I was on the edge of my seat.

It is true that this book lacked a little something for me. I didn’t feel the sea battle was a copy paste of prior books, and had no problem with its similarity because it was logical tactics, but I did see it coming. The author telegraphs events a bit much in this book, including the bear. Yet I was worried for the betrothed couple and for Thorn…

I did laugh several times in this book, as with prior books. The scene with the “best men” at the wedding was adorable.

I did expect far more interaction from Erak the oberjarl. He was virtually invisible on that boat, for so many pages, which completely went against his boisterous and outspoken characterization in prior books. CertainIy I expected Thorn to interact with him.

Nice to see Heron ii. Longer on the waterline. Faster. Helm protection. Does this boat have a rudder or a wheel?? Prior version had a tiller.

The story ends with Erak issuing a warning to the enemy.

I have been a diehard Ranger's Apprentice/Brotherband fan for a while now, so of course I immediately got this book as soon as it released (in audiobook, of course, because John Keating's narration MAKES the books).

After the ending of the last book, I wasn't sure if I would like this book because of spoiler stuff that happened in the last book. But I shouldn't have worried. I ended up loving this one. It is a softer entry in the series. A one-and-done adventure that was rollicking good fun but didn't have as big a stakes as some of the books. Still, I was on the edge of my seat listening to it, and it had plenty of laugh out loud moments that I've come to expect from these books.

And, even better, one of my (figurative) ships sailed in this book, and it was a ship I hardly dared to hope for since it didn't seem like the typical, easy answer ship. But the author TOTALLY went there, and I'm SUPER happy he did! And it ended up some of the best parts of the book!

Honestly, I don’t see the point of adding this book the series felt complete without it and it wasn’t as good as the other books in the series.

3.75 ✨ i love this series but 9 books in i’m seriously wishing for more character focus/development. i’d love to see the spotlight put on the “background” members of the brotherband and to change up the characters that are often interacting with each other for more interesting variations in the relationship dynamics. it’s kinda starting to feel a bit repetitive in each book 😬

There’s sooo much potential but all the emotional relationship building seems to happen behind the scenes and then there’s just a quick recap in a chapter at the beginning and end so big developments seem somewhat surprising. I’m still keen to read more of these characters but i’d just love some more variation.

So… I generally love this series but this one wasn’t the best for me… There was way to many plot holes or things that just made zero sense for me! It started building towards the end…

First when they conducted a scouting party at night and brought Ingvar. With his balance and eye site this made ZERO sense. The author tries to validate it a few times saying for his fighting ability. I mean isn’t Erak with you guys? Isn’t he a pretty dang good fighter and a lot lighter on his feet? Speaking of Erak I get that Hal is in command of the ship but sometimes the story just felt like it left him out when he would have been involved. Maybe the author didn’t want him taking away from the crew but it felt like the story didn’t make sense because of his lack of involvement!

The entire bear cave scene felt like a wasted part that had no drive for the actual story. Not only that but Thorn was with Ingvar in the cave, while the heron was off fixing their plan… During this sequence the author states Thorn and Stig used to Hal doing this watched him without saying anything… How can Thorn have been watching him when he was at the bear cave!!!!

Also why weren’t the other ships out after fixing their repairs? They said the repairs would take half a day! And why didn’t the heron catch up to Wolfwind quicker then they did if Wolfwind was stopping to raid all these places, maybe I’m wrong but I feel like that would have slowed them down significantly when they didn’t have a huge lead in the first place!

I don’t know maybe I’m nitpicking this one but it just wasn’t up to the usual standard for these books!!! But I sure hope he does another one, I love these series! For some reason I don’t want them to end until Hal and Maddie get married! I feel like they have to for the series to be complete

pick me
To typowe "pick me" podejście.

- Oczywiście on temu zaprzeczy - powiedział hilfmann, właściwie bardziej do siebie, a Erak prychnął z niesmakiem.
- No przecież!

Postaci same w sobie są płytkie i dziecinne.
I będą konsekwencje!

Hal stał się zadufany w sobie i bywa nawet straight up złośliwy.
Płynę z chłopakami. "Wilczy Wicher" to mój okręt, zamierzam go odzyskać.

Ingvar, Stefan i Jesper zostali pozbawieni praktycznie do reszty charakteru i jakichkolwiek oryginalnych cech.

PODSUMOWANIE
To beznadziejna książka, nie czytajcie tego.

I wish the author had kept up the fabulous nature of these books, like the Ranger’s Apprentice. The Ranger’s Apprentice and the beginning of this Brotherband series are just fabulous. The recent Royal Ranger series is particularly bad. This series is going downhill. What happened to all the opportunities for hilarity between Erak and Hal? And the Ingvar and Lydia thing was just out of the blue and not supported by any text.
What happened, John? I would rather wait for fabulous books then be skimming.

(audio) Thus ends the Brotherband saga. It was all so good. And I think I do like it more than Ranger's Apprentice.
Is it because I just read it? Maybe.
Is it because of all the awesome characters? Maybe.
Is it because it didn't have the sad third book about drugs? Maybe.

I'm not sure what I'll do with myself without a John Flanagan book in the queue. Actually, don't worry, I still need to read The Early Years and the Royal Ranger. I don't think I'll like them as well, but I said that about Brotherband and I ate those words completely.

Ninth in The Brotherband Chronicles adventure series for Middle-grade readers revolving around the crew of the Heron set in a fictitious Scandinavia. The focus is on recapturing the Wolfwind.

My Take
The intro is a brief look into Hal and his crew building a new Heron and testing its new abilities. If your kids are into historical adventure and/or sailing, this is definitely one for them. As parents, if you’re interested in promoting girls as heroes — get it, lol. There is equality among the crew. There are also amazing examples of teamwork and the values of helping each other in overcoming weaknesses. Of making them a formidable crew who have each other’s backs.

Flanagan also points out the various values that exist within the Heron’s crew, their sailing cooperation, their battle tactics and abilities, and the camping amenities that Erak grows to appreciate. Erak also starts to appreciate how he had appeared to others when he had been raiding.

Hmmm, I should probably warn you that there are a couple of parties in this one with people getting drunk — and suffering the next morning.

The Skandians have “seen the light” and signed treaties with various countries to protect ships on the seas.

Flanagan is a good writer and always pulls me in, except for Thorn’s battle cry. It is such a childish one, and always makes me cringe. I do wish there had been more of a clash between Erak and Hal during the chase, if only because it would have made more sense of Erak’s character. Then again, there is Erak’s obsession with SAVING his ship. There's also some confusion, in my mind, about Erak's being the past or current skirl of the Wolfwind.

There’s humor in here, from Erak’s cheapness to Kloof’s obsession for Erak’s staff, Jesper’s ode-making abilities — “it takes a special kind of talent” to “come up with verses as bad as this”, the oft-times annoying banter between Wulf and Ulf, the offering of bridesmen and the requirements thereof, lol; and then there’s Erak’s dictation of the threatening letter:
”Then draft that up exactly as I said it . . . in your own words, of course.”
The boys are getting older with Flanagan noting the ideas of marriage.

Yep, The Stern Chase is full of characters and plenty of action, all coming through third person global subjective point-of-view, allowing a variety of perspectives from the crew. All the better to appreciate their trials and tribulations, lol.

It’s a great read with plenty of positives for anyone.

The Story
It will be a wedding! After much celebrating, the Skandians waken to tragedy, and it’s the Heron and its crew off to right wrongs, greatly outnumbered, but very determined.

The Characters
Hal Mikkelson is skirl for the Heron , an innovative ship Hal designed. He also has a reputation for tactics and planning. The Mangler is another innovation and a fierce weapon. Karin is Hal’s widowed mother, who has been seeing Thorn.

Stig Olafson is Hal's firstmate. The rest of the crew includes the bickering twins, Ulf and Wulf; Thorn is the grizzled, one-handed warrior and fighting commander; the very short-sighted Ingvar is a stalwart companion in battle; Jesper Swiftfoot; Stefan; Edvin, who is their healer and cook; and, Lydia, a girl skilled at tracking and using the atlatl. Kloof is their mascot, a dog with strong protective instincts and a great desire for Erak’s staff.

Hallasholm, Skandia, is . . .
. . . home where Erak Starfollower is Oberjarl and skirl aboard the Wolfwind . Svengal is Erak’s best friend and the first mate of the Wolfwind. Tegar and Rogger had stood sentry that night. Wolfcry is another wolfship. Viktor Svenson is Erak’s current hilfmann (private secretary and administrative assistant) with a better sense of diplomatic warnings. Helmut and Arnett Follskirk are identical twins. Birgitta is the bridezilla.

The Stormwhite Sea is the body of water the Skandians have pledged to protect.

Sonderland is . . .
. . . one of the allies with Livosk its principal city and ruled by a Hierarch. I think other cities of Sonderland include Gryphon, Leduc, Hekber, Jalkerk, and Malmet.

Tuetlandt is . . .
. . . an ally. Bolshafen is a big trading port.

Plessa is a small island of fishermen where Tyrell appears to be the leader. Bryan Murtagh is captain of the trading ship Faun . Other trading ships include the Maid of Alourn and the Fenian Lass .

Other allies include the Gallicans.

The Iberians are . . .
. . . reluctant allies. El Déspota is its current ruler. Zidac is its capital. Some of the crew of one ship is Miguel. Of the raiders, El Despiadado (the Savage One) is the captain and other crew includes Santos and the cocky Juan.

The Hungassi tribe and Magyarans are suspects.

The Cover and Title
The cover is a blues and browns collage of events from the ship with eyes on its bow and a gray-clad, sword-toting warrior standing in it to the blond-haired warrior on the left in dark browns holding a wooden shield with the sense of a boat beneath him rising from a mist of lighter blues. The author’s name is in a black-lined turquoise with a slight gradient to a paler turquoise in the middle at the very top with an info blurb in white with a black shadow immediately beneath it. The series info is in a gothic silver script shadowed in black in front of a large wooden shield with crossed seaxes and a silver wolfship on the top. Framing the bottom of the shield is what appears to be a silver ram’s head?? with extremely long horns ending in spiral swirls. At the very bottom is the title in the same gradated turquoise and black shadow.

The title is a metaphor for Hal and the crew of the Heron’s The Stern Chase of the pirates.

I read these mostly out of habit, since these are often easy reads that continue a story I started about a decade ago. That being said, I do not think I have seen more of a filler, copy and paste book ever...

Chasing a boat with another boat and trying to mangle it.... Yup. We have done that before. Party, not once but twice, driving home the boisterous nature of the Skandians? At least 5 or 6 times now. The comedic dog stealthily obtaining a forbidden stick... These stories used to have some amount of innovation or novel obstacles. I would like to see more of that. I thought at first having Erak aboard would provide some more political conflict/growth, or even just give some more backstory the the beloved Oberjarl. Instead, he was practically invisible for numerous confrontations, and did not argue once at being left out of scouting missions and such. It was impossible to suspend my disbelief.

It is okay to let a story end, and if the next installment does not advance an arc, it will need to be done for me personally.

1.5/5, round to 1/5 for filler-ness.

*torn between a 3.5 and 4.

I enjoyed this for the sake of being with the boys again, but it was a bit of a disappointment. I would have liked to have seen more interaction between Erak and Hal, I sometimes forgot Erak was even there. It just seemed really fast and I just wanted more. I liked seeing the new ship and Hal is a genius as always, it is just that the last book was so amazing and this is just fine.

While I typically love the Brotherband books, this one felt a little dry. The overall "chase" just felt less thrilling and (like many other readers in the reviews), this story seemed less captivating compared to others in the series. That being said, I love the characters that Flanagan has crafted in this world, so it was nice to see the personalities of Hal, Thorn, Erak, etc again.

Ok, it’s official, John Flanagan is absolutely terrible at romance. After setting the stage for a love triangle in book 3 and then leaving it completely untouched for 5 books, Flanagan casually throws out a “She chose X, BTW”. Romance 101: Provide at least one chapter of romantic build up. *Shakes head*

Otherwise, this was another standard Brotherband book.

Content:
The language is clean. There is still no romance and no magic. They have a number of Norse-like gods, but religion doesn’t play much part in the story
