When she was only twenty-three years old, Rachelle Starr started going to strip clubs to share Christ's love with the dancers. Now, having founded a Christian ministry to people in the adult entertainment industry, she demonstrates the key to shining Christ's light into the darkness--love people one at a time and continue to love them no matter what.
Loving others like Jesus did has to be more than social media shares and likes--we need to meet people in their pain, growing in our empathy and love for those God has placed in our lives. But maybe you're afraid or unsure where to start. This book will light a fire in your soul to step out in greater ways and to become fearlessly and outrageously obedient to the Lord.
Be inspired by Rachelle's true stories and biblical encouragement, and discover the courage to say yes to God. Then witness the fruit and the blessings of your obedience!
"You may never have Bible studies with prostitutes, but you will be invigorated and galvanized by Rachelle's infectious stories and plain-spoken truth." --KYLE IDLEMAN, bestselling author of Not a Fan and One at a Time
My endorsement: Fifteen years ago, God called Rachelle Starr to reach women in adult entertainment for Jesus. He’s used her ministry to bring so many from darkness to light. Pick up Outrageous Obedience, and you’ll be inspired. The same faithful God at work in her is calling you to risk-taking faith.
I thank NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Outrageously obedient was quite unlike any book (fiction or nonfiction) that I’ve ever read.
Outrageously obedient was one woman’s story and how God called her to start a ministry that was absolutely outrageous. God was calling Rachelle Starr to set up a ministry in/for women who were stripping in strip clubs.
She listed set specifics about how many woman are trafficked from our very own country. She also speaks of most Christian’s going about eliminating these strip clubs in ways that weren’t responded to well, basically, by turning them in, not by loving on them and showing every single dancer that she’s is Gods beautiful child. They fed the woman, offering to take them to church, the offered shoulders they could cry on and ears to hear their issues (all judgement free zones).
Rachelle calls us in the book to find what we feel Jesus is calling us to do and DO it!
The author of this book founded Scarlet Hope, a nonprofit that ministers to women in the adult entertainment industry. Thought-provoking piece on how we are responding to God's call for us to live and obey.
"God is calling us out of our comfort zone and into a risk-taking partnership with Him. He wants us to join him in bringing compassion and help to a hurting world. If it's uncomfortable, it could be that you're not sure others would approve of what you believe God is calling you to do. Jesus went to the darkest places and spent time with those who were thought to be the most sinful people. He hung out with and ate meals with thieves and prostitutes in a culture where godly people were not supposed to do that. He was okay with being misunderstood and criticized ... Jesus was full of compassion. He didn't focus on himself and his own needs. He didn't wait for others to come to him. He went out to touch the untouchable with healing and hope. And he's called us to do the same."
In Outrageous Obedience, Rachelle Starr made a decision to follow God’s calling on her life. At age twenty-three, she visited a strip club called Fantasy X with her friend Sarah. But not for the reasons, you might think. She was first lured in by the posted sign outside that stated, “pretty girls, not ugly ones”. They chose to not wear makeup and they wore a turtleneck where they wouldn’t get hit on. God told her to bring hope to His people. She first explained to the female bartender that she wanted to bring them a home cooked meal. They met with the young owner of the strip club and told him how they wanted to show the love of Christ to the women working there. He allowed them to bring in home cooked meals. The first time they did it only one woman ate the food. Eventually, they were able to make a difference and connect with the women working there. She explained how there is an estimated four thousand sexually explicit businesses just in the United States. She explained how people viewed Jesus differently when he chose to associate with Matthew. The religious would judge Jesus for eating with sinners and tax collectors. He told a powerful teaching about how the sick are the ones who needs a doctor and how He came for the sinners.
She also shared about how she had a medical condition when she was just three years old. She has a spot on her back that turned out to be scleroderma. There were only ten other cases in America. She also dealt with Raynaud’s phenomenon and had to wear hand splints. She goes into great detail with all the health challenges she had to endure and how they made her stronger. Her family supported her during this difficult time and taught her about God and His teachings. She explained how she was healed and the doctors stated that the tests were normal.
I would recommend this awesome book on becoming the salt and light of the world and following God’s calling on your life. I loved the story of how she founded her non-profit Scarlet Hope and the meaning behind the name. I immensely loved how she revealed how she chose to reach out to women working in the adult entertainment industry and try and make a different in their lives. It was heartbreaking to see how she took one woman to church and was judged and asked not to return wearing the outfit she chose. Granted, it did contain the B word across it. I liked how she reminded us the importance of truly loving people were they are in their life. I enjoyed the discussion on active obedience and she provided seven steps to assist readers. This is an inspiration book on loving people like Jesus would.
I received this book free from the publisher, Bethany House/ Chosen for my honest review.”
I first heard of Rachelle Starr and Scarlet Hope a good long time ago. Way back when I was first getting into podcasts, there was one, "The Porn Guys" or "The Porn Dudes" or something like that. These were the founders of X3Watch, an accountability program I had on my computer. They introduced me to one of my all-time favorite music videos: Constance by J Madieros. They also regularly interviewed people who were involved in outreach ministry to the adult industry, and through them, I heard about Scarlett Hope. So when I saw that Rachelle Starr had a book on Netgalley, I jumped at the chance to read it.
Outrageous Obedience combines biblical and practical advice for how to step out in faith with examples from Starr's own background and experience. Her ministry began with her and a friend going into a strip club to offer a home-cooked meal and share the love of Christ with the strippers who worked there. Jesus was accused of being a friend of tax collectors and prostitutes, and she followed his example as literally as possible. She also faced much of the same criticisms from religious people that he did. But now there are Scarlett Hope ministries in dozens of cities while hundreds of women the world calls "the least of these" have met Christ because of the love of women like Rachelle Starr.
In her own words: "My prayer for you... is not that you'll see my ministry at Scarlett Hope but that you'll hear of God's faithfulness to me, and that it will inspire you to obey Him no matter how overwhelmed or panicked you feel. No matter who says you can't. No matter what you must give up... You. Can. Go. Because our faithful God goes with you."
This book was very challenging about thinking outside of set boxes in my mind of serving God. Don't read it if you don't want to be shaken out of your comfort. Short. To the point. Encouraging. Stretching. She goes to strip clubs with meals each week for the strippers and shares the gosple with them after they express interest. Her own testimony is interesting as well. I picked it up after the synopsis intrigued me. Especially with how God has been stretching me this year. I recommend reading this book. I would reread it and will keep it on my shelf.
Reading this book brought moments of conviction, moments of rejoicing, and many moments of encouragement to trust God and go wherever He leads, humbly and lovingly.
Rachelle Starr shares her story of Outrageous Obedience to God’s calling in her life and desires to see others walk out their calling. This book will give you the courage and tools to be a risk-taker for God.
I am thankful to know and serve alongside Rachelle as part of Scarlet Hope. She had the vision and tenacity to enter the clubs in Louisville years ago. Now Scarlet Hope is serving the women in the adult entertainment industry in multiple locations across the country with growth on the horizon.
Her story of the highs, lows, and what she has learned over the last 15 years is inspiring no matter WHAT you do in life.
