Honor's Refuge

Rate this book
When she was just five years old, Melissa Braxton watched her father take her mother's life. Separated from her sister, Lola, at that time, Melissa grew up with a strong desire to help those stuck in abusive relationships. It's why she became a family therapist and opened a domestic abuse shelter.

After losing a leg to a gunshot wound in the line of duty, Phil Osbourne has felt like a man without a purpose--until he hears Melissa's story and decides to use his Special Forces contacts to track down her missing sister. He knows what he discovers will break Melissa's heart. What he doesn't realize is that helping the women reunite will bring the cartel down on them like the Category 5 hurricane striking Miami.

Bruised yet not quite broken, Melissa and Phil battle the storm and the cartel, calling on strength they didn't know they had to escape death, save the innocent, and--just maybe--find healing in each other's arms.

Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Characters: Both Melissa and Phil were sympathetic characters. Phil had a lot of internal problems he needed to work through over the course of the story. Melissa was a relatively stable character (which Phil needed). They ended up working well together.

Language: Clean.

Plot: This novel had moments of action and several suspenseful scenes. I was a little confused by how lax Melissa was with the security of the domestic abuse shelter she ran and how she didn't seem all that concerned about her sister's safety.

Romance: Clean. Just kissing.

Theme: Honor's Refuge featured themes of worth and depending on God. I do wish the themes had been clearer at times. I felt like I was getting some mixed messages.

Writing: Hallee Bridgeman's clear writing style worked great for this novel.

Overall: Honor's Refuge was an entertaining read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and romantic suspense.

'Please God, this is going to take You.'

I just this moment finished this stunning book by Hallee Bridgeman and wanted to get my review done while it was still super fresh in my mind. Wow! I love this series so much. And by the way, this series is how I discovered Bridgeman's work. I will be on a mission to read all her work now.

I've loved the stories of these men who were on that Special Forces team in the Green Berets. What a powerful lot of guys they were. And they love God, too. That's even better! This is Phil Osbourne's story. I am sitting here at a loss for words as to how to best describe how much I loved this book. At one point near the end, when God is speaking to Phil's character, I felt as if He were speaking just to me. I just sat there and wept. I find it so amazing that God can speak to us, as readers, through the pages of a book.

There is great action here, as in the previous two in the series. You will definitely be taken on an exciting ride when you read one of Bridgeman's books here. No doubt about that. You will also meet great characters that seemingly leap off the page as you find yourself in the middle of the story yourself. I gasped several times as things went not the way I wanted them to. My husband always says, 'Good book?' Good doesn't even begin to describe this book. It made me want to turn around and start it again. I loved every single minute. Even the heart rending ones. I can without reservation highly recommend this series and this author. Well done!!

My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinion in this review is entirely my own.

I loved this series by new to me author Hallee Bridgeman. I have enjoyed getting to know this Band of Brothers Special Forces unit. Bridgeman's writing made me feel as if I was right in the midst of the story.

This third volume has less influence in our Band of Brothers who I feel make a cameo appearance rather than being part of the story as in the previous two. The unit has broken up and went back to civilian life so it does not highlight military missions like the first two. This deals with the relationship of Phil and Melissa more so.

I would recommend reading them in order so you can understand how/why Phil has to come to terms with using a prosthetic. Melissa is no stranger to abuse and runs a secretive domestic abuse shelter. One element is I like how the story starts with them already knowing each other rather than waiting for the meet-cute.

This volume emphasis the faith element more than the other two books did. And how these characters lived and prayed out their everyday life.

Honor's Refuge may be my favorite of the Love and Honor Series. I absolutely adored Phil and Melissa. This book had so much action. Phil was a kick but hero. I couldn't put this book down. I was surprised with twists and heartbroken over what I can't say because of spoiling the book, but let me just say the book was amazing. I enjoyed the fact that two of his buddies from the other books made appearances in this story.

The romance was so sweet and precious and it made for a sweet happily ever after. I sure hope there are more books to come. Needless to say Hallee Bridgeman is a favorite of mine.

I have really been enjoying this fast paced series featuring Special Forces soldiers. You can pick up Honor’s Refuge and enjoy this book without having read the first two books in the series, however, I think it would be a great idea to read book one, Honor Bound, first if you have the time. In that book, you will see all that Phil Osbourne persevered through in order to survive the injury that led to the loss of his leg. Honor Bound is also a fabulous book and my favorite of the series, so I highly recommend it.

I loved seeing Phil again in this story. He had a lot of emotional junk to get through from not only the past two years, but also other stressors from earlier in his life, as well. Melissa was no stranger to violence, either. She survived abuse as a child and witnessed the murder of her mother. I was so impressed with what she had done with her life. She was a very strong woman.

It was hard to watch as Phil struggled with some really heavy things in this story and was emotionally beat down time and again. However, he made such a big journey spiritually from the first page to the last. I really liked how straightforward Melissa was in speaking to Phil about their relationship during difficult times in this novel. She didn’t pull any punches. I enjoyed this action packed and emotionally charged book from beginning to end.

Fantastic romanctic suspense! I am loving this highly addictive series. In Honor's Refuge by Hallee Bridgeman, we get to read Phil "Doctor Oz" Osbourne, Ozzy's story. We last saw him not adjusting well to losing his leg on a previous mission. And Melissa Braxton, who at five years old, after witnessing her father kill her mother, has been separated from her younger sister ever since. Melissa has a heart for helping those stuck in abusive relationships, and she and her business partner are therapists who own and operate a domestic abuse shelter at a hidden location.

Wow! So much action and suspense, I could not put it down! Strong characters, searching for Melissa's sister, drug lords, murder, getting help for abuse victims, who is trustworthy and who is not, family, and loss are some of the things you will encounter in this page-turner! The big issue for Phil is not seeing himself as "whole". Melissa is perfect for him, even in his grumpy moods.

Melissa and Phil share a meal every week. "How are you?" 'How was she? She didn't think "desperately in love with you and wishing you'd notice me" was the answer he sought.'

Readers of romantic suspense will love this story. You can totally read it as a standalone story, but I loved binge-reading this series and seeing familiar friends in each book. Hang on to your hats, you will love this ride.

Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.

Honors Refuge was absolutely intriguing and kept me on the edge of my seat! It was full of intense suspense along with a story of love, faith, and family. A healing a redemptive story that much reflects life in that everything is still not perfect. Definitely had some great life lessons.

This is a featured verse in the book that I love, and it fits perfectly..

"Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen."
Ephesians 3:20-21 KJV

This book was AMAZING!
Honor's Refuge is book #3 in the Love and Honor series by Hallee Bridgeman.
In my opinion, each book has gotten better as the series has continued on!

This story features Special Forces A-Team member Phil Osbourne, who in book #1, Honor Bound, lost his lower leg in shoot-out with a war-lord in the jungles of Katangela. Phil struggles fiercely with the temptation of substance abuse, and feeling less than after losing his leg.

This causes him to distance himself from abuse shelter director Melissa Braxton, who has cared and prayed for him for a long time. Melissa has dealt with her past and spends her days helping those needing sanctuary in her community.

All these things make for a wonderful story of love, perseverance, and God's providence working in all our lives.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this complimentary e-book. A positive review was not required of me, and the thoughts above are my own.

Negative elements and trigger warnings:
a character sports a bikini
Violent death- A villain feeds their henchman to the swamp alligators.
There is a bit of blood here and there, but nothing morbid.
Innocent people are abused and beaten by people they trusted.
Substance addiction, drinking.

Honor’s Refuge is a romantic suspense story that kept me turning pages quickly.

I love when I open a book to read a few pages…perhaps a chapter, and it draws me in so quickly that I just can’t stop. I enjoyed the pacing, the romance, the suspense, and the wonderful characters.

Phil and Missy are easy to connect with. They both have their issues, and by the end of the story they experience so much growth. I empathized with Missy and understood her silent thoughts of wanting him to notice her and her emotions.

The search for her sister was compelling. The themes of family and faith are inspiring and kept my heart completely invested. And the ending…oh my. My heart pounded out of my chest.

First Line: Missy huddled with three-year-old Lola between the nightstand and the bed, praying her little sister would stay asleep.
Genre: Christian Mystery/Suspense
Author: Hallee Bridgeman

Content: Clean, deals with abuse

A compelling read, emotionally gripping and with captivating characters.

Phil Osbourne is determined to help his friend Melissa regain what she lost so many years ago when she was separated from her sister Lola. Phil and Melissa have become good friends over the years, and he wants to help her in any way that he can. I liked that Phil is an honorable guy, who is honest about his faults and puts others before himself.

An action packed read, this book felt different from the other books in the series in that we didn't have the camaraderie of the whole team working together like in previous books, but still an excellent read. One of my favorite series that I have read this year!

Overall, a inspiring read, filled with suspense, and faith in this high stakes adventure! Highly recommend!

I have honestly never read a book that kept me as engaged as this one did. Melissa Braxton, the heroine of the story, has turned her life around after her abusive father killed her mother. Now, she works with a friend to house those who are fleeing from abuse. Phil Osbourne, an intrepid and skilled member of the Alpha team is trying to discover where he fits in since his leg was amputated during a field operation. Melissa falls in love with Phil, but he keeps rebuffing her feelings because he doesn’t feel that he can take care of her since he is not a whole man. The plot is so fast-paced that it kept me reading and mesmerized by the sub-plots of Melissa looking for her sister who went to a different foster home and Phil’s relationship with his brother Winston, a D.A. in Miami. The closeness and support of family is an important theme in this clean read, as is the sense of finding your own identity and self-worth. I enjoyed how Melissa and Phil supported each other and the way their relationship developed in spite of Phil’s best efforts to distance himself. There were several real gut-wrenching tragedies in the plot that had me crying, but they just made the entire story more realistic and compelling. The drug lords who are the enemies are like Satan himself on steroids, destroying everything in their path and not caring about the lives of women or children. I especially enjoyed the almost cameo-like visit from “Pot Pie,” a member of Phil’s former army team and the humor he lent to a very serious storyline. I could have kept reading this book for hundred of more pages and never gotten bored because I was totally invested in the stories of the credible characters and the challenges that they faced. In fact, I was sad to see the story end but happy that there is another book in the series coming. This book is part of a series, but it can definitely be read as a standalone although I would recommend savoring each book and the characters that are presented. There are possible triggers in the novel, most importantly the abuse and violent drug kingpins. But the topics are treated sensitively and there are no graphic details. This is my favorite of the series because Phil is one of the characters from the series who planted himself firmly in my heart and his being the focus of this book was a bonus for me. This is a must read book for those who enjoy romantic suspense with a military flair and realistic details!

he first line drew me in, “Missy huddled with three-year-old, Lola, between the nightstand and the bed, praying her little sister would stay asleep.”

The prologue sets the tone for the rest of this incredible novel, allowing readers to get to know these young ones and their gritty, family situation. Missy and Lola are hiding, as they watched their father yell and kick their mother, hoping he won’t do the same to them.

The scene is intense but not super graphic. This author tackles some tough topics (respectively) like domestic violence, recovery from drug abuse, redemption, second chances, forgiveness, mixed with family drama and a natural spiritual thread, even showing a day in the life of first responders. This author has a heart-felt dedication in the front of the book to first responders that touched my heart.

Phil, a retired military vet whose lost his leg in battle, helps, Melissa with safety issues at the shelter she owns. He’d like to do more, and be more to her, but he’s stuck. He felt that Melissa should be with a “whole man”, not one like him. This story does not have as much military action out in the field like previous books, but have no fear, Phil’s pals make an appearance, which was fun. Readers are caught up with Phil’s backstory through his friends, but it doesn’t make up for reading the other novels.

There is plenty of action and drama as the abused leave their situations and get help. Phil is an EMT who sees his share of street battles. The intricate details of these complex characters make for a compelling and explosive story that had me on the edge of my chair as the plot thickens and reaches its climatic ending, with lots of twists and turns.
I loved the wholesome romance between this unlikely pair, of a military man, and a women’s shelter owner. Phil and Melissa, along with their families, will stay in your hearts and minds long after you close the book.

I was blown away by this climatic, heart-racing ending to a powerful series. The author did a brilliant, nail-biting novel I couldn’t put down. This works for a perfect book club pick. The author has included discussion questions and bonus recipes to help create a lively, fun book club meeting.

Honor's Refuge is the third book in the Love & Honor series, and I was captivated from the very first paragraph. This book is the emotionally charged story of two people who've endured so many traumas in their lives. Phil Osbourne is a Special Forces soldier who lost his leg two years ago and is still trying to accept this loss. Melissa Braxton knows the tragedy of abuse after witnessing her father beating her mother so badly that she later died. As a trained therapist she is capable of helping Phil, but can she protect her heart if he rejects her efforts?

I just recently discovered this author, and this book is definitely proof of her excellent writing ability! Physical abuse, drug cartels, murder, and death are some of the heavy topics featured in this story but Bridgeman buffers them with a strong message of hope and faith. I recommend Honor's Refuge to all who enjoy Christian romantic suspense.

How? How does she do it? Just when I think I can't possibly love a book more than I do, Hallee Bridgeman comes at me with this book and knocks the reigning champion off the pedestal. Phil and Melissa dance around their feelings for each other, bringing the love angst to a whole new level. I knew from the beginning that I wanted Phil to get his own story, and now that it's here, I'm enthralled with it. The depth of courage on display in Honor's Refuge is the stuff of legends. EMTs and other emergency personnel deserve all the love and support. Phil's devotion to finding Melissa's sister takes the story and runs away with it, adding suspense galore. A completely enthralling tale that I'm sure to read again and again. I received a copy of this book from RevellReads. I was not required to leave a positive review. Halle Bridgeman again holds the reader's attention in her third book in the Love & Honor series.

While each book can be read as a standalone, I would urge you to read all of them. I am the type of person who leans toward Historical Romance. But this author has convinced me to read more romantic suspense.

I am astounded by her ability to create not only a compelling narrative but characters that are genuinely real. They accurately portray human strengths, weaknesses and vulnerabilities. I will miss them.

A word of warning for those who have experienced abuse of any kind, this book might be a trigger for you. The opening scene had my heart in my throat. But as the book progresses, we get to see how our main character, Melissa Braxton, uses her experience of abuse to help women escape abusive situations. And it doesn't hurt that she has Phil Osburne (who returns from the first book) to help her when things get dangerous.

The story is compelling, and the pace is brisk and vividly rendered. I guarantee you will not be able to put this one down. I highly recommend it!

Honor's Refuge is my favorite of this series - each book just keeps getting better! I love that this book includes a couple of Phil's military buddies, but there is a different spin on the suspense as Phil is now serving in his hometown as a paramedic. His past still haunts him as he doesn't believe he can be the "whole man" he wants to be for Melissa. She is the perfect match for him, loving him and believing in him when he doubts himself. His strength and determination make him just the steady force she needs in her life.

The suspense is top-notch as they race to rescue Melissa's sister from the cartel - I had to stay up late to find out what would happen! While I loved the fast-paced plot, my favorite part was how real Phil and Melissa's faith is to them, evident through their prayers and their actions. I highly recommend this series and am eagerly awaiting whatever Hallee Bridgeman writes next!

This is a fantastic book with great characters, wonderful storyline, and a good faith theme. This entire series has been so good, and the author definitely doesn’t disappoint on the last book of the three.

I am handicapped myself with difficulty walking among other things. It takes time, soul searching, and trusting God knows best to accept Gods story for one’s life with the understanding that God will get you through…and joy is definitely possible! The entire process is a learning one…Phil goes through a lot in this book, but with God working in His life, he comes to see what is important. The faith theme through this character is such a good one.

Two of his buddies show up for a short while to help, but this is mostly Phil’s story.

The female character is perfect to help Phil fully accept who he is, and what he needs to be whole.

The storyline is a good one with a lot of suspense, love both characters, and I really think my favorite part of the book is the faith theme. It is very well woven into the story nd very powerful.

All three of these books will be on my forever shelves, and I am hoping for more from this author. I’m also thankful that they were published so close together. It made it easier for me to follow as I have a very bad short term memory. This series is just incredibly well done.

I received this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This book did not have the same intense suspense as the other two books in this series.
This storyline was more about the mental, emotional, and physical brokenness that war and abuse causes a person.
Each day is a battle to be strong and heal from abusive situations. Everyone, myself included, who is healing from trauma needs support and understanding, but as this story points out, growth and trusting God are key parts of healing.
This read will tug at your heart strings.

If you are looking for an action driven, edge of your seat thriller this is the book for you. It does contain sensitive issues that could be a trigger for some readers. I liked the main female character Melissa. Coming from an abusive childhood, she now runs a shelter that houses people who need to find a safe place. She and her friend carefully bring men, women and children there and help them escape their abusive relationship. I admire all the hard work Melissa and her friend have taken to make others feel safe. They give them a chance to start a new life.

Phil has seen his share of trauma from being in the service. Losing a leg at times makes him feel like he is less than a man which holds him back from relationships. I liked how he wanted to do something meaningful for Melissa and was able to find her sister that she lost touch with when they were separated as children. What he didn’t know was the danger Melissa’s sister was in. There is a good faith element in the story which illustrates how we can call out to Jesus in our time of need.

The story takes on a dangerous man who is involved in the drug cartel. He also happens to be married to Melissa’s sister. With determination Phil and Mellisa team up to help her sister that brings trouble to everyone at the shelter. There is a leak somewhere in the government that puts lives in danger. A tragedy shakes the operation to its core. I liked how the author keeps readers guessing as the story has twists that kept you on the edge of your seat. Don’t miss this intense story of faith, danger, secrets and healing from your past.

I received a copy of this book from The Librarything Early Reader Program. The review is my own opinion.

Honor’s Refuge by Hallee Bridgeman is the third book in the Love and Honor series, but it can easily be read as standalone. That being said, book one, Honor Bound, was really good and in that story we get to meet Phil and it also tells the story of his injury, so I think it would add to this story if you read that one first!

I really enjoyed this story. The action was nicely paced and there were some twists and turns and shocking events that I never saw coming - like jaw dropping events! I really liked Melissa and what she decided to do with her life after her traumatic childhood. She was a great pairing for Phil who could be pretty grumpy and kinda negative. She was always upbeat and positive and when he was too grumpy she had no problem speaking her mind or standing up to him. I thought their personalities played nicely off of each other.

I did feel like both Phil and Melissa were a bit too casual about safety after two major things happen in the story and that was a bit frustrating to me. I also felt like the ending, while I see why it had to happen the way it did, was not fitting with our villain and how he would’ve acted based on his previous actions.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. The faith thread is medium. 4 stars.

Honor’s Refuge by Hallee Bridgeman was much better than the previous two books in this series. The plot still had a lot of down time, but there were moments thrown in where the readers were actually paying close attention to Melissa and Phil’s story as they tried to help one abused victim. The climactic moment near the end of the novel was a struggle for the characters, but it was nice to see Phil in action even though he has one less leg. Melissa is a brave woman who puts herself in the line of danger to help abused women to escape their abuse partners and learn how to move forward. Bridgeman does a good job at showing the guilt some of these women feel from their abusers. Of course, what romantic suspense novel would be without a touch of romance to the story. It was not overwhelming, but the happily-ever-after moment at the end of the novel was predictable and unoriginal. I wish romantic suspense novels would stop ending like that. Overall, Honor’s Refuge by Hallee Bridgeman had more suspense with a touch of romance.

I received a complimentary copy of Honor’s Refuge by Hallee Bridgeman from Revell Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.

I really enjoyed this author when I read her first book and I couldn't wait to read the rest of the series. Sadly I never got to book two before I jumped to this one since it was sent to me for review. I am typically a stickler for reading books in order but lately I have been so bad and I hate it because I like to know if I'm missing something and although I caught on this story I knew there were little things I may have missed. When I read the first book I knew I wanted to know more.

Gosh this story is emotional. Phil is just learning to manage with a lost limb and finding who he is once again. He meets Melissa and doesn't feel like there could be anything in the future with her but ends up helping her in her fight against domestic violence especially when it involves her sister.

This story is full of action, suspense and especially a great theme of faith and depending on God. If you enjoy stories with action, romance and suspense then this is the story for you. I highly recommend you read the whole series!

Honor’s Refuge was a fast paced suspense read that delivered plenty of action and some truly shocking moments! This book ticked all the boxes of what makes a suspense read good for me! Phil was a grumpy hero working through a lot of issues related to his injury and Melissa was the perfect compliment to his gruff persona. I absolutely loved how Melissa spoke her mind, never treated Phil like he was too fragile for the truth, and gave him the space to work through issues. Phil took a very long time to break down barriers, however I loved how he was still helping others and finding purpose even while healing. Hallee Bridgeman does not shy away from showing a villain to be truly depraved and evil and I feel like this gives her writing a genuine quality that I really enjoy. These characters were vocal about their faith which was also really great. I really enjoyed this book and this series as a whole and look forward to seeing more from this author.

Just from reading the opening line, it was clear that this book would be emotional and intense.

Warning: this book deals with physical abuse, so might be a sensitive subject for some readers.

Phil and Melissa were characters with so much individual history, baggage, and insecurities to work through. Especially Phil who had to find his worth after losing his leg and had to learn how to still be the strong soldier he is. I loved the scene where God answered Melissa's prayer in an obvious and physical way.

I also appreciated how the author balanced the intensity and emotions, with the physical action and danger, and more lighter scenes.

I enjoyed this series and would recommend it to fans of military and romantic suspense.

Honor's Refuge by Hallee Bridgeman was a resounding third installment to her Love and Honor Series. In fact, I think this one is the best so far! I quickly fell in love not only with our hero and heroine - Phil and Melissa - but also with the plot centering on domestic abuse victims and the insidious evil of a drug cartel. With a foreboding sense of doom, fast paced action, and ever increasing depth of character, Bridgeman delivers a punch of a story. I am very much looking forward to book four!

I received this book from Netgalley. all opinions are my own.

This wasn’t as “suspenseful” as alot of suspense books, but I didn’t mind too much. Lovedddd the character growth and the romance. I did figure out the “plot twist” very early on though😅 however I really enjoyed the story and reading all the details about the women’s shelter!

It’s been awhile since I read the prequel and books 1 and 2, but I *think* this one was my favorite— romantic suspense lovers, check out this series!!
