Life is unfair. Bad things happen to good people. Not all dreams come true. We lose people. We fail people. And when we encounter the inevitable struggles of life, we may be tempted to ask God Why me? as we try to reconcile our pain with God's promises. But a far more helpful and life-enriching question for us to ask God is What are you trying to teach me in this?
Tackling ten common struggles, such as isolation, fear, rejection, failure, insecurity, temptation, and more, Landra Young Hughes shows you how to have peace even when life doesn't make sense. Speaking with great empathy born from her own losses and years in ministry, Hughes doesn't suggest you "get over" your hard times. Instead, she helps you recognize that, while you will always live in a broken world this side of heaven, your pain has much to teach you about God and yourself. With her empathetic help, you'll discover how to grow through grief and thrive despite adversity.
Looking for God's Goodness in our Struggles....so many times I've found myself in this situation. The author of this book writes about her relationship with her family, friends, and God. Landra was unfortunate to have a sister who became an addict and then passed away.
Landra reminds the reader that no matter what we do, God can make something beautiful if we continue to put Him first, stay in the Word, and trust Him. God will never leave us or forsake us. The author uses lots of Scripture throughout the book. This helps the reader to understand that this comes from God, and not just positive thinking. I like the messages in this book.
The chapters can stand alone as a devotional with a theme or the book can be read as a single book. I prefer to use it as a chapter devotional, so that I can spend more time looking up the verses and listening for God's message to me.

In Where is God in This, Landra Young Hughes gets real as she discusses topics such as addiction, loneliness, judgementalism, rejection, and temptation.
After reading this book where Hughes exposes some of her failures and issues in these topics, I feel like I have a new friend. The author doesn’t stick to surface discussions. No, she opens her heart and her home and invites you in, mess and all, and I think we Christians need more of this transparency with each other.
My church has a saying that is used often: Exposure is an act of grace. I can’t imagine a better example of this lived out than in Hughes’s writing. Grab a cup of coffee, get comfortable, and spend some time getting to know the author better as you also learn more about yourself.

Where is God in This? by Landra Young Hughes is an excellent resource if you're in a dark season and looking for a ray of hope. Landra meets you in your hard places with honest words and powerful scripture. She's a friend—a fellow soldier. And a sister in Christ who desperately wants you to find healing where ever you are. A few years ago, I navigated through a challenging season of grief and doubt, and these words would have been a comfort and a compass during that time. Even now, I found chapter after chapter of wisdom to help me as I continue my journey. And Landra makes it easier to figure out how to start changing things in your life by giving you practical applications to her teaching that encourage you to move away from the unhealthy routines of your life and closer to the calling God has for us. Overall, I felt like this book is an excellent resource for anyone struggling through hard times in life while trying to cling to their faith. If you find yourself asking Where is God in this?, then I’d highly recommend reading the advice Landra has gained by walking through her own heavy seasons.

I LOVE reading Nonfiction that makes me think. In Where is God in This by Landra Young Hughes is one I picked up based on name alone. I mean I think all of us at one point in our lives look up and say "where is God in this?". At least I know I have.
I loved how Landra Young Hughes opened up and did not shy away from hard topics, but rather faced them head on and gave them an open space to reflect. It's something so many people don't talk about even in church. We are just supposed to accept that He is and not question it. But that's HARD. This book was brought up to me at just the right time, I needed this book.
Such a good book to learn from and reflect on who you are and who God is. Truly adored this one. And can't recommend it enough.
5 Stars. *I volunteered to read this book in return for my honest feedback.
This book could not come at a better time as I struggled wondering where God was during a recent mission trip to Africa with a team who had poor attitudes. God was right there with me, although at times it did not feel like it. He does not want us to struggle, but to learn to grow and become fully dependent on Him. We are all broken and live in a broken world; however, we all have a lot to learn, that God will never leave us or forsake us. The author shares her personal stories and covers everyday struggles that we all face: from fear to rejection to insecurity. We can not just “get over” those issues but lay those at His feet daily.
I think we have all asked ourselves at times, Where Is God In This? No stranger to heartache, Landra Hughes has asked God this question many times. In Where Is God In This?, Landra shows the reader how to look for God's goodness in the midst of our struggles. See, I'm in the middle of what has to be the most soul-draining season of my life. When reading Where Is God In This, I felt like I was sitting across from Landra and having a conversation. I felt her struggles, frustrations, and heartaches. Landra writes from a voice of experience and does not sugarcoat our struggles or try to might light of them. Some of the most difficult tensions we encounter as Christians (and humans) involve the desire to control. Sharing personal stories along with lessons learned along the way, we can all relate to Landra. She tackles common issues that we all struggle with. I found this book very relevent and highlighted many things. Where is God in This is another book that caused me to pause and think. Surrender is an act of worship. It's a holy sacrifice. Thank you to JustReads and the author for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I needed this book. The last few years have seen some heartbreaking loss in our family, leaving me struggling a bit to see God's hand. I so appreciated this book and the insight that Landra provides with looking at some of the common responses to grief and how we can work through it in a healthy way. There were so many good quotes in this book that I could relate to! I highly recommend picking this book up if you are struggling with grief or hoping to help someone through the grieving process.
I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.
“I’m not really OK.“ What a refreshing way to start a book! It’s a simple statement but one that resonates with everyone, and really set the tone for this book. Where is God in This is written from a place of healing as the author continues to deal with the effects of the loss of her older sister LeeBeth. Her sister and her personal struggles are brought into the narrative, as well as personal experiences from the author herself, showing that even being the daughter of a preacher doesn't make you perfect. It’s a wonderful reminder that we’re all flawed, but we’re also not in this battle alone.
There were parts that were triggering for me because it mirrored several of my own struggles but with God’s Word being spoken throughout, as well as the encouragement from author, who has also dealt with the same struggles, was a soothing balm to my soul.
There is nothing really new spoken in this book, yet many of the author’s points resonated deeply with me. I highlighted a lot, and I also pondered a lot. It was a quick and easy read that brought me deeper. I felt God speaking to me on so many points it was almost overwhelming. It helped open my eyes to parts of my life that I have not truly surrendered to God’s will, something that is painful, but necessary to experience the freedom that God promises.
Each chapter has a focus that is applicable to every human life, something we can all relate to, which instantly ties you to the author’s voice. Pair that with her tellings of personal experiences that identify with that chapter’s main focus, and you’re hooked. It was like listening to a friend tell me about the disasters from a recent road trip while also ministering to me as I confess my own shortcomings.
This was just the read that I was needing in my time in the desert, and I am truly thankful to God for blessing me with this resource, and to Landra for pouring her heart onto the pages.
*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.
Landra Young Hughes is a preacher's kid. A follower of Christ. A survivor of eating disorders. A wife, mom, and ministry leader. A writer with a fantastic, funny, and honest voice.
She's also a woman who lost her sister to an addiction.
In Where Is God in This?: Looking for God's Goodness in Our Struggles, she shares her story, and how she is walking through the suffering that nobody ever wants (regardless of what kind of loss it is). It is a heartbreaking story. But it's also, at times, hilarious (this woman can tell a story!). And Landra shares, alongside her own experiences, practical helps that we all can pick up and use. Suffering can make us want to withdraw, or to become bitter and hard. Knowing and holding to the truth that Jesus really is walking with us in our pain is part of the strategy. But it's also taking note of and caring for our own bodies. Being honest with God. Replacing defeating words with God's good and true words of the Bible. Remembering, and believing, that God IS good, and that His intentions are good toward us. Landra also talks about judgmentalism, temptation, extending love to others, forgiveness, feelings, and fear.
I found so many ideas that I highlighted as I read this good book. I plan to add these ideas to my journal, to return to again and to remember. There are also many beautiful verses of Scripture that I'll add along with them. As a popular song reminds us, and as Landra's book does as well: "God is with us." That's a truth to remember in suffering...and really, in every one of our days.

This book starts with, “I’m not really OK.” I was instantly drawn in and felt that this book was a breath of fresh air from the beginning, as so many times, as Christians, we put on a mask for others, which closes the doors to being open and honest with others. In this book, the author gets real as she shares openly and honestly about addiction, loneliness, judgementalism, rejection, burnout, fear, and temptation. I was drawn into this quick read, as Hughes exposes some of her failures and issues in these topics, and I felt like I made a new friend. She opens her heart and invites you in, mess and all, and is transparent and honest with the topics many of us face in this broken world.
My favorite chapter was when she talked about her desire to control and how a surrendered heart is an act of worship.
You will resonate with this book if you are struggling and grieving. When I’ve been walking through these times, having a friend walk beside me and help me know I’m not alone is comforting. This book does that with its transparency and open conversations, and I believe that the reader will regain a sense of hope and direction as they find a friend to walk beside them through the storm. It’s an excellent reminder that we will go through struggles in life, but God is always faithful and is still there with us. “God does not want you to fail. He wants what is on the other side of that failure.” (chapter 6)
I highly encourage you to check out this book.

I enjoy all genres of books, especially Christian Non-Fiction/Living Books. I really love the encouragement from the Christian Living books. Where Is God in This? by Landra Young Hughes and Holly Crawshaw is the latest Christian Living Book that I have read.
Life is filled with Struggles and can take us through many "Storms" of life. Many of these life struggles leaves us asking God "Why Me?" and many times we wish life could be PERFECT. Landra Young has had many life struggles and has been through so much and shares her personal stories in this book. Landra writes about 10 Common Struggles in life which include Isolation, Fear, Rejection, Failure, Insecurity, Temptation amongst others, and how each of these can affect our lives.
WOW, this book is much different then other books of similar topics. I really appreciate how Landra Young Hughes shows us that even through the Struggles of Life, God is still there with us. Landra doesn't tell us to "get over it" and "move on", instead she helps guide us on how we can "get through" each struggle of life. The author writes how God is really showing us that Struggles in life are meant to draw us closer to God and ask him "What are you trying to teach me God?" I really LOVE this and I truly need to put this into practice in my own life. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who wants to grow closer to God and not allow Life Struggles to bring you down all the time. Struggles can be meant to uplift you and your family! FANTASTIC BOOK!
Maybe you haven’t suffered with an eating disorder. Maybe you haven’t lost a family member to a substance addiction. But I bet something has happened that you have thought, “Where is God in This?” I know I have. Whether it is a health issue, a relationship issue, or some negative event in your life, it is normal to question if God really meant for it to happen. Author Landra Hughes struggled with anorexia/bulimia and she lost her sister to alcohol abuse. She knows what it is like to question the wisdom of God. Where is God in This? documents her struggle and shares Scripture as she answers this question. As a person with chronic illness, I found understanding and wisdom in Where is God in This? I will most likely read this book again in the days to come. I may also recommend the book to friends who face difficult situations and find themselves questioning the wisdom of God in their situation. I received a complimentary copy of Where is God in This? This is my honest review.
This book is not the typical book I post reviews about here on my blog. This is a nonfiction book. But it is one you won't want to miss! This is the second book I've read by this author, Landra Young Hughes. I find her writing to be so real and down to earth, and extremely challenging.
Her writing style makes you feel as though you've sat down and had an in-person conversation with her. Her exuberant personality just shines through the lines.
This particular book deals with hard things. Landra's beloved sister, LeeBeth passed away quite unexpectedly. As already stated above, "Landra shows how to have peace even when life doesn't make sense."
It is easy to see that this book was written through blood, sweat, and tears. Ms. Hughes does not give easy or pat answers, but does show how the journey can be managed, one day at a time.
I highly recommend this to anyone going through a hard time in life.
(I also was very privileged to read her earlier book, A Different kind of Love Story. That one was also worth a read! It deals with addictions, eating disorders in particular)

Where Is God In This? by Landra Young Hughes is a self-help book with roots in Christianity and the Bible. After quoting John 16:33, Mrs. Hughes starts out with, "I'm not really OK." This pushes the reader straight into the life of struggle, difficulty, and suffering we each face by putting her own life under the magnifying glass to help us see better. Mrs. Hughes approaches struggles in life through her lens of seeking God and finding the truth in His words and the example of Christ. She has had many struggles of her own, as well as family struggles, that she shares openly and honestly in her chapters. This gives the application of the information she shares some real-life experience.
Mrs. Hughes looks at the adversity, suffering, isolation, surrender, burn out, expectations, hurt, pain, failure, fear, judgment, and cravings that are par for the course for humans. But she doesn't just say "yes, they are there." She helps see God's will and way through them so that arrival on the other side of them is possible. "God does not want you to fail. He wants what is on the other side of that failure." (chapter 6)
There are many strong, good parts of this book. I found much to be considered in it. The Bible is not a typical translation that I read and thus was difficult for me to follow along with. (Scripture is from the NIrV.) I had my own Bible out alongside of it so that I could read and understand the passages included in something that was not so much like a paraphrase. I found the second half of the book to be much more engaging and helpful than the first half but there was plenty there to consider.
If you are in the "hard" of life right now, you might really resonate with what Mrs. Hughes has included here. I encourage you to check it out.
I read this during a very difficult period in my life. I am sure that is what most people say when reading this book. Perhaps it is why people pick it up in the first place. It reminded me a lot of truths. It reminded me of what GOD has to say in the middle of whatever hard time we are going through. There were times where I did not want to face what this book said because the truth sometimes hurts. Sometimes, you don't want to face reality. You don't want to face it, but you must because sometimes, the only way is through. But I can say that like GOD, this book was my companion through some tough times. It walked with me THROUGH the sea, in the fire. Thank you pastor Landra ♡ may GOD continue to use you to minister greatly and like those that you are helping get through their grief, I pray that you continue to heal as well. God bless you.
Where is God in This is a raw look at the moments in our lives when we feel completely ripped apart inside and lost emotionally and spiritually. Landra Young Hughes doesn’t flinch when she tells her story of grief and pain, of loss and struggle while trying to help us all walk through our own struggles in life. So many times life does not make sense and it especially does not make sense if you are a Christian who has put their trust in a loving God who sometimes doesn’t seem loving. “I think one of the greatest tensions of the Christian walk is reconciling our fallen world with a loving Father. But we quickly forget that this world is not the world God created.” And from that and many other important points, Hughes leads us down a path of peace and comfort to our hurting souls.
Where Is God In This? written by Landra Young Hughes with Holly Crawshaw is nonfiction Christian living that examines a dozen hard aspects of life, including suffering, isolation, failure, fear, and judgment, through a spiritual lens. While being vulnerable and honest in sharing what she's learned after experienced difficult life events (including her battle with disordered eating and the death of her sister), Landra Young Hughes infuses her writing with humor and a conversational style that's easy to read and and held my interest.
While these concepts weren't new to me, it was reassuring to be reminded of God's promises in life's most challenging times. I'd recommend this title to anyone struggling to find the presence of God in their lives, whether their faith is 'new' or a source of strength for many years.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review; all thoughts are my own.
While there are some nuggets of truth in “Where Is God in This?” I felt like the author, Landra Young Hughes, relied too much on her sister’s tragically young death to move the book along. Much of the book is Hughes grappling with the why of her sisters death by assuming why her sister began drinking. Those parts of the book felt the most inauthentic to me while reading.
As someone who just lost her father, I was deeply, deeply moved and inspired. This book really touched my heart and filled me with hope. I would recommend it to anyone who not only lost someone but is also looking for God in their life.
