He married me, exiled me, and now he’s the only thing stopping me from saving my sister.
My sister is turning to stone. She's been asleep for eight years – the same amount of time I’ve been the secret, exiled wife of the King of the Ocean. Poseidon is fierce, unforgiving, and terrifyingly powerful. I’m just a broken sea nymph whose magic never surfaced. But the only way to save my sister lies in his underwater palace, and I’ve got nothing else to lose.
I expected escaping exile and getting to the palace to be tough. What I didn’t anticipate was battling a torrent of unexpected desire for Poseidon when he catches me. The devastatingly beautiful ocean god has secrets. Wild waves crash through his eyes when he looks at me, and I soon realize he might be just as broken as I am.
But when a god has secrets, the consequences are deadly.

Eliza Raine writes Greek mythology inspired fantasy that is fast paced, full of new worlds and creatures and sprinkled with a healthy dose of romance. She lives near Reading in England with her husband, three cats and outrageously cute puppy. She has a BA Hons in History and has a deep-rooted passion for mythology and stories about women who don't need rescuing. She can usually be found reading fairytale retellings, playing board games or binge-watching Netflix shows.

I am officially obsessed with Eliza Raine and will read everything she writes, even her grocery list. 😍
Secret of the Broken King is full of plot twists and that's one of my favorite things about Eliza's writing! Just like the Hades Trials, we also have the Poseidon trials (but this time completely different trials! Expect the unexpected!). Almi is Poseidon's secret wife, exiled in the human world, and one of the last of the Nereid. She doesn't understand why he married her or why a stone sickness is slowly consuming him and her sister... But she must find a way to save Lily, the fate of Aquarius might just be on her hands.
The romance is slow burn, my favorite type since we get an exciting build up), I am excited to see more interactions between Poseidon and Almi...he hides so many secrets I want to peel him layer by layer! We also get to see characters from the Hades Trials again (I love Persephone)! Almi's companions are adorable and you easily fall in love with them. I loved every dialogue with Kryvo.
thank God the next book releases in April because that ending !!!! 😩 Thank you to Lagardnermedia for gifting me a copy for review!
As always amazing work by Eliza Raine! I’m such a fan of her books. Her take and twist on mythology retellings is fantastic!
I absolutely loved Almi’s character, she has her wits and doesn’t stay behind because she’s different than others. Although this story is a bit slower than The Hades Trials, I feel like it went the right pace for what Almi was after. Her determination to save her sister was so amazing. Reminded me of the bond I have with my sisters. I loved her dynamic with the other characters as well. Ahhh I’m obsessed! Poseidon was broody and I loved every second of it.
Looking forward to reading more by Eliza! Huge thanks for sending me a copy of the book!
Poseidon was a character that really intrigued me in The Hades Trials, so I was super excited to hear that he was getting his own series. And I loved the cameos from Hades Trials characters in this book!
While the build up felt a tad slow, things definitely picked up about half way through the book and at that point, I couldn’t put the book down. The cliffhanger has me in desperate need of book two, but thankfully I don’t have too long to wait!
I received a gifted copy, and all thoughts & opinions are my own.
SECRET OF THE BROKEN KING is a great series starter! It follows Almi, a water nymph with no magic and Poseidon’s secret bride. Now exiled to the human realm, Almi’s mission in life is to track down the Olympian artifacts that will lead her to the cure for the sickness turning her sister to stone. Her search, however, leads her right back to where she started. In order to save her sister, Almi must find her answers in Poseidon’s kingdom, and face Poseidon, who harbors a secret of his own. Things take an even more unexpected twist when she unwillingly finds herself involved in the Poseidon Trials… What happens next? Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out!
While the story has lots of action throughout, being stuck in Almi’s head while she has no other characters to interact with gave the perception of a slow start for the first half of the book. Luckily, I immediately warmed up to her as a character! Her sharp tongue and sass made her immediately relatable, and I found kinship in her love for her sister. Lily and Almi’s bond reminded me of the one between my sister and me, so I was really rooting for her to succeed in her search for a cure from the get go. The second half of the book was by far the most engaging. The succession of plot twists had me glued to the pages, and so did Poseidon. Give me a broody, white-haired man and I’m sure not to move away from a book ever again! I loved the banter between Almi and Poseidon, and I’m 100% convinced there is more to their past than Almi is aware of, which made me desperate for their interactions. I wish we’d gotten more of them together, but what we got was addicting, and I can’t wait for the next book. The ending is brutal for my shipper heart!
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. All opinions are my own.
An amazing and unexpected tale featuring the god of the sea, Poseidon.
Star rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Spice rating 🌶️
I hadn't explored the world of Poseidon, the god of the sea yet, before stumbling upon "Secret of the Broken King." This captivating fantasy retelling, infused with a touch of romance and tension, immediately grabbed my attention. I must say, it exceeded my expectations. The story burst into action from the very start, and as a devoted fan of Greek mythology and its mythical creatures, I was completely enthralled. Eliza skillfully crafted an engaging narrative, and I found myself thoroughly enjoying the direction the story took. The author's original plot and captivating world left me yearning for further exploration. I particularly appreciated the inclusion of a detailed map, offering valuable insights into the story's universe. Although the book concluded with a huge cliffhanger, I embraced it eagerly, as it only intensified my desire to read the next installment without delay.
I absolutely loved Almi's character from the start and throughout. Despite being portrayed as weak, I think she's a clever character with hidden powers. I'm eager to find out what powers she actually possesses. Almi's unwavering determination to rescue her sister, her sole remaining family, resonated deeply with me. The selflessness displayed in the face of protecting and curing a loved one in need is a sentiment I believe many of us can relate to, myself included.
Moreover, Poseidon, initially appearing as a cold and brooding figure, evoked a sense of resentment due to his treatment of Almi. However, by the end of the book, you'll come to love Poseidon's character. As a reader, you realize that he actually cares about Almi, even though he rarely shows his emotions. His actions spoke volumes, and by the book's conclusion, I had come to appreciate his character immensely.I firmly believe there is a deeper connection between Almi and Poseidon than what is initially portrayed in "Secret of the Broken King." Anticipation bubbles within me as I eagerly await the unfolding of their romance in the next books of this enchanting series.
Overall, "Secret of the Broken King" kept me captivated with its exciting story, well-developed characters, and the promise of even more excitement to come. I'm eagerly looking forward to diving deeper into this fascinating series.
This was stupid but at least it was short.okay that’s rude but this book was so mediocre. I didn’t care about any of the characters. The whole book the main girl is saved by the man and can never save herself so yeah for the damsel in distress idk. And the plot was so meh like I simply didn’t care if anyone lived or died.
This one was good, but it wasn't as good as the other series. I'm hoping that it gets better in the next book. Because you can't end a book like that and not want to read the next one.
Okey I need to explain this. I gave this book 5 stars but it is not a usual five star read. The author wrote 2 other trilogies in the same „universe“ which I read and enjoyed. I love greek mythology and usually every retelling there is. But Eliza Raine is not retelling anything and im here for it too. She just takes some elements of the Greek Mythology and has a lot of fun with it and creates a Fanasy that is allways verry thrilling. The story almost allways starts imedeatly and evolves pretty quick. I allways pick up one of her books when I am in a reading slump and in need of a fast reading validation. Its 3 Books in 2-3 Days and I really enjoy it everytime. But as much as I love eliza raine for everything I just said, I have to say sometimes I get the feeling the writing could be better and there is potential to make this quick, fast, enjoiable readings into verry good, gut wrenching and life changing experiences. Thts why I wouldnt say it is a usual 5 star read. In my opinion the writing lacks seriousness and the storys could use some deeper and better plotting. But it could be that she is making it on purpose because she wants to do exactly just that. And if it is, than she is doing a perfect Job with it.
The story itself was great! Aside from the fact that Almi does nothing but non-stop stop cussing the entire story! Thus, the title of this review. 😐
Think of the climactic moment of an adventure, battle, or life & death scene. Now - END the story & book. Yes! That's *exactly* what this author did. Stopped the story right then & there.
Books like this should have a warning in the intro. Forget a HEA. NO ENDING P.E.R.I.O.D.
So while this author wants to take away a readers choice & force them into purchasing another or the next book - this reader - who was interested in this author [despite the language] would have continued reading other books - now, will absolutely not!!
Shame on Eliza Raines! You have not even done your job as an author: give readers a COMPLETE story! 😐👎
Having started The Hades Trials by the same author, Secrets of the Broken King was everything I was expecting it to be, if not more. The story follows Almi, an exiled water nymph with no magic, and Poseidon’s secret bride, who returns to Poseidon’s court in her quest to find a cure for the mysterious illness afflicting her sister. However, once she’s there, Almi finds herself being part of The Poseidon Trials without her meaning to, and now the stakes are higher than ever.
Almi was a character I instantly loved because of her determination to save her sister, no matter the cost. In a lot of ways she reminded me of my sister, which only made me like her more. I also loved the bond with her sister, which we see through a series of flashbacks. My own bond with my siblings makes me very sensible to sibling relationship in books, so when I find one that is strong and well developed, I love the book even more, which is why I hope to see more of Almi and her sister in the future books.
While the book is action packed, the first part felt a bit slow. I found the story more engaging from the moment Almi gets in Poseidon’s kingdom. I enjoyed the cameos from characters from the author’s past series, like Hades and Persephone, and I loved Kryvo, her starfish companion who accompanies her through the trials. I would have liked to see more Poseidon. There aren’t many interactions with him and Almi, and while I’m intrigued and I think they have great banter, it wasn’t enough for me to ship them already. The ending, however…goodness, I need the sequel now!
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
I wasn't expecting much here to be honest, but I was pleasantly surprised! I've started a handful of books lately that all had me rolling my eyes in the first chapter. I don't necessarily think it's the authors' fault, I just think I'm more discerning the older I get. I know reading is subjective and we all have our favorites, but lately I've just been so disappointed in books I thought were going to be good. That being said, I really liked this story and I'm looking forward to the next book! I've always had a fascination with ancient Greek mythology and I love how this story weaves the ancient myths with a pinch of modern and a dash of mystery to boot. The Poseidon Trials are an interesting twist and the challenges were interesting. I didn't recognize some of the sea monsters and demigods and demigoddesses, so I think I'll need to brush up on my mythology soon. So, all in all, this was a fun read without a bunch of obligatory and raunchy sex scenes and I'm looking forward to the next one!
A really interesting take on Poseidon. You always know that with an Eliza Raine book, you are going to get tension, complex characters, and a fun plot. They are easy reads that can be binged. I had fun with this series.
For those who read the Hades trials, they will also love The Poseidon trials. It is a slower start, but it definitely picks up and I loved Poseidon and Almi.
This was way way way way better than I expected!!!! The pacing, the characters, the tension!!! Its just - chefs kiss! I love Almi so so much and I cant wait to see whats happening in the next book! Definitely an unexpected favorite of 2023.
I could not put this one down. I devoured the hades trials. And need to read the ares trials still. But this one was SO GOOD. The tension and story is amazing. I loved Almi. And Poseidon is oh boy. That ending though I’m not okay and need the next book now.
I've been following the Dark Gods of Olympus since Hades, and I personally loooove him. But Poseidon? He can stomp on my heart when he pleases, yes.
Secret of the Broken King was short, but captivating. It grabbed me from page one, and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. It's really good, it has new characters, Almi who now possesses my heart with her fierce love for her sister, his little starfish friend, andddd that sea-and-sky creature that I must simply assume everyone loves. And I snickered every time her confused feelings towards Poseidon appeared. And because of the Trials, it has action. And a lot of mythological sea monsters.
Eliza always makes me research about all the components she puts in her books 'cause I really don't want to miss a thing.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a reasonably interesting approach to how and why the gods play and exact vengeance and how intertwined those things are to them. While not being spoon-fed all the background, a reader has enough to anticipate what's next, and even if they've guessed wrong, its more of a discovery than a wtf? Nice touch.
That said, and its too bad I have to say this because I've spent years of reviewing by cultivating a positive approach, but it wouldn't matter to me how clever the hook and/or presentation when a story that could easily have been told at once, is cut much shorter than the average novel and turned into a bunch of dismembered cliffhangers. I'd much rather read a 600 page novel than three 200 page stories.
So, if I find out what comes next it will be via hearsay.
This is book one of The Poseidon Trails and the main character is Almi, born and raised in Poseidon’s realm of Aquarius. Eight years before, she and her sister Lily had to attend an audience with Poseidon, along with hundreds of other sea nymphs. Lily was trying to hide Almi from any attention, as Almi had no magic, unlike Lily, even though they were both one of the Nereid. Something Lily had always warned her to keep secret, like her lack of magic. Apparently there was a prophecy from Apollo’s Oracle at Delphi, which stated ‘He who possesses the heart of a Nereid shall possess the Heart of the Ocean. True love is not a necessity, pure possession will seal the deal.’ Poseidon has been looking for one such as Lily and Almi, and he is determined to marry one of them to fulfil the prophecy! He doesn’t care which one he marry and would come for them the next day. Lily was the one chosen, but before anything could happen, she was found unresponsive, as if in a deep magical sleep and it was Almi who ended up married to Poseidon. He then banished her immediately to Earth, where she had been searching for a way back, with a cure to be able to heal her sister! When Almi does return, she finds her sister has started turning to stone and her time is running out. The only solution or cure she has read of, is in Poseidon’s secret Atlantis location and she needs to get into his place and find his magical ship, which is the only one capable of reaching it. The only problem is that Almi is not like a normal sea nymph or even like her sister. She is unable to hold her breath underwater for more than a minute or so and the palace is a good swim away, not her strongest skill. She has to rely on magic and tricks she has learnt or stolen whilst on Earth, when she was hunting for answers. Unfortunately, her magic root fails before she reaches the dome surrounding the palace and Poseidon ends up saving her from a dangerous demon shark. She had thought to try and apply for a place in the Poseidon Trials, but they have been waylaid by another god, Atlas, for vengeance against Poseidon. Atlas wants to kill Poseidon’s wife, as punishment and revenge against whatever Poseidon did to his wife! So now Almi has her wish, but she will be facing off against a group of gods and goddesses, chosen by Atlas, and with no magic of her own to help her! Poseidon is making her think things she shouldn’t and she has to keep reminding herself that she hates him and is only doing this to find a cure for her sister. Atlas isn’t playing fair and has put up Poseidon’s trident and realm up for grabs to the winner and Poseidon himself is one of the competitors. She has kept the secret of her lack of magic all of her life, knowing how dangerous it is for anyone to find out how broken she is. But it seems Poseidon is broken as well and a few secrets which are becoming very dangerous for both of them. The consequences could well be deadly, as Almi has a severe disadvantage against the other competitors and they are facing deadly surprises at every step! A nice opening to the series giving background to Almi and her sister Lily, and her purpose in travelling back to Poseidon’s lair. Poseidon is a god and king of his realm, so powerful and to be feared. Not someone she should take lightly, but ending up as his wife has consequences and draws her closer to him than she ever thought she ever would. I look forward to finding out what happens next, as competitors fall into danger during the trial. I received an ARC copy fo this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Poseidon might be my favorite in Eliza's retellings. I read in the order of Hades - Ares - Poseidon and was not disappointed. You could probably read them out of order, but I'd recommend that order if for nothing else than to just have the backstory on a few things (NO SPOILERS!) that come up throughout each book.
Poseidon is broody, guarded, and hard - not unlike the sea. He's conflicted and wound tight. So, when Almi returns to Poseidon's realm to try and save her sister, she throws the Sea God for a loop and they enter into this internal battle of (1) self discovery and (2) longing for one another. It's totally a "forbidden fruit" type of story. Both want what they can't have, which is each other.
Poseidon and Almi's story starts with conflict. Almi has been banished and returns to save her sister and confront Poseidon. As his wife, she understands that she'll have to tread lightly. As a non-magical Nymph, she faces greater challenges than the rest in the underwater realm, but she endures due to a mad Titan returning and causing a sickness to rip through Poseidon's realm.
Poseidon, now trident-less, must enter the trials along with other Greek mythological creatures of legend, and Almi. Gripped with love for her sister, and determination to prove to Poseidon that she doesn't need him (and in-fact, hates him) she forcibly enters the Poseidon Trials but her goal is not to win the trident, her goal is to just survive.
Eliza's way with building anticipation between characters, and adding to already stifling tension, is thrilling to tread through in The Secret of the Broken King (Poseidon Trials #1). I was sad to read that she's taking a break from Olympus and I'm hoping she'll pick right back up where she left off and we'll get to meet a new Olympian and hear their story.

WARNING! Enormous cliffhanger! As with the Hades trials series (related but although it’s good to have read first, not necessary to do so) this is a serialized story which means HUMONGOUS cliffhanger endings. So thank goodness the other books are already out!
Almi is a nereid, or at least she thinks she is. But she doesn’t look like one, nor does she have the power of one, and ultimately this is NOT a good thing. Eight years ago, as the last nereid, she married Poseidon, and was subsequently exiled for her own safety (he obviously didn’t think it through!), leaving behind her sister who has been somehow sleeping beautified and placed into a magical coma. Almi thinks she might have a cure, which necessitates her return to the Aquarius realm ruled by Poseidon. It is unfortunate that her return coincided with a territorial dispute that places her in the Poseidon trials, fighting for the right to rule Aquarius. Her inability to do magic doesn’t prevent her from making some important connections, a cowardly starfish companion and a sea-Pegasus might be the only things that can help her win…
This is a fast paced, and rather action filled story, based around Greek Mythology. Zeus is up to mischief again, and no-one is quite sure why, but it leads to both Almi and Poseidon being in a great deal of trouble. If that isn’t enough, Poseidon has other troubles he is dealing with, leaving Almi and her sister as pretty minor concerns for everyone but Almi! All that being said, it makes for an exciting read, well worth it for those who love Greek Mythology, and for fans of the author’s previous series. (If you hate cliffhangers, then you’re in luck because all the books in this trilogy are now out!)
This story is pretty good, don’t get me wrong. I love the world building, would have liked a bit more of that. The relationship between Poseidon and Almi was underdeveloped though. Almi started off totally hating him then a few interactions later, she can’t take her eyes off his physique. Erm, ok. The trials themselves were wonderfully designed, very interesting.
Much of my frustration resides with Almi. For nearly all of this book, I just wanted to punch her in the face. She is a survivor but pretty limited in her intelligence and emotional maturity. She swings from screaming in anger to cowering and being paralyzed by fear, like a fast swinging pendulum. There was no in between. That’s just exhausting to read when there’s no real connection between reader and characters. I suppose if I had more time to connect with the characters, I’d be more tolerant and understanding. Instead, I did a lot of eye rolling and wanted to bash her head.
Then her decision at the end, doesn’t really make sense because there was no actual development leading to that decision.
Perhaps if this book focused on developing just a bit more on world building and real, genuine interactions between characters then I’d give it a higher rating. I’d still read the next book just to see what happens, if I can remember the release date.
This was a story of the queen of the seas, Poseidon’s wife has been banned to the human world but nothing will stop her from saving her sister.
This was the 3th series in the trials books and every series gets better and better. I loved the world building as it was written so beautiful and in detail but yet not overtaking. The way the story was portrayed was just stunning. It’s a quick and easy story and the trials were just brutal (as expected).
A lot of secrets gets unfolded as the story get on and the ending? I didn’t see all of that coming, the death the coming back, losing and winning and the biggest secret of all was the story of Medusa.
Overall I loved the build up to the ending, I waited until all books were out to read them because I knew that I would read them all at once and couldn’t wait. I am kinda sad that the covers of the paperbacks don’t match the other (only the ebook covers match the previous paperbacks) but else I would’ve bought them too to add to my collection.
I would definitely recommend them to everyone, there is almost no spice other them 1 sex scene in the last chapter of the last book (and that one is also very minimal).

Description I’m going to try and pull off the heist of a lifetime. And honestly? Stealing a magic ship from the underwater palace of one of the most powerful – and angry – gods in the whole of Olympus is probably the worst of my long list of bad decisions. Not just because Poseidon is freaking terrifying. But because he has a secret.
And I’m it.
I’m his secret wife, powerless and cast out of my home. If he catches me, it’s all over. So why the hell am I risking my ass? Because my sister is turning to stone, and I’m all she’s got. I’ll risk anything for her, including the devastating ocean god’s mighty wrath.
But when I discover there are more secrets in Poseidon’s palace than I ever imagined, I realize it might not just be my ass I’ve put on the line. The King of the Sea is broken, and if I don’t get out soon, my heart is at real risk of going the same way.
Secret of the Broken King is the first book in the Poseidon Trials trilogy. Expect magic, mythology, and a searing slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance that will leave you desperate for more.
Almi has been chasing after clues to cure her sister's curse during her exile from Aquarius. But as she gets closer to a cure, the trail leads her back home to the husband her exiled her in the first place: Poseidon. The god of the seas is dealing with his own troubles and soon a challenge comes from a god that cannot be ignored. Almi is in the center of it. Will she find the strength she needs to save her sister?
I ate this book up in one sitting. Our two main characters are the most developed and Poseidon does come off a little flat sometimes. But, whoa nelly, I loved the rapport between the two. It is hilarious and hot. The story kicks off slow and the author is in no rush. So most of this book is set up with the action finally coming to play in the last third of the book. But you cannot help enjoying yourself every part of the way. Out heroine is clueless but in no way helpless. And boy does this book end on a doozy of a cliffhanger. Be prepared to block out some time to binge. Once you start you will not be able to stop.
Blurb: I’m going to try and pull off the heist of a lifetime. And honestly? Review: Awesome first read in this trilogy. Secrets abound and can't wait for the next one!
Okay like this book is fun I guess but it’s was literally only 200 pages… so many details could’ve been added to this to make it make more sense. I just did not like the pacing. Everything happened so fast and like I like Poseidon but I don’t really care about him as much as I could if there were better explanations for him and everything. Like the author just threw so much at us and it was a little hard to process as things kept happening. And there seems to be a very obvious part that happened that could solve everything so i’m interested to see if I’m right but SURELY that can’t be it? I’m not one to guess things that happen so if I can guess it then… what are y’all doing? And the romance… i hope it gets better. I love a good slow burn build up and obviously that’s not what this has to be but these two MCs are barely together and the ending? Like… idk it was a good fun and VERY SHORT read but… i wish there was more to get deeper into the story. But for what it is its good enough.
I loved this read, as well as all the ones I've read by the author. She creates characters that you either fall in love with or hate, but no feeling in between.
Almi is brave, risk-taker. Despite not having her powers, nothing has stopped her in her fight to save her sister. That is love and determination.
Poseidon from the beginning has been difficult with Almi; he cannot understand her actions, yet it is clear that he cares about her and her people. On the surface he can be arrogant and proud, however, in the brief glimpses he has given us he shows us that he is driven by nothing but love for his people, his kingdom and I'm sure for Almi. All that bravado is gone when he looks at her.
Atlas promises a lot of trouble. His revenge has no end, nothing will stop him until he gets it. These next tests will be more complicated. I expect nothing but excitement in the next book.
