Poor Celeste has a Cinderella kind of lifestyle as she drudges for her ungrateful father and sister. She has the simple dream of squirreling away enough money to escape and find a respectable house-keeping position. You can, of course, tell from the synopsis and indeed the title that this is not what is fated for her.

Set initially in Ireland this is a period BDSM story, very dark BDSM indeed, the first of eight parts; it is well written and the heroine is convincingly drawn. She is defiant, strong-willed and keeps the hopeful flame of escape burning in her heart for much of the story as well as adapting to her unwelcome role as Lord Davien's captive. The story is told from Celeste's POV and we learn a lot about her character so although the start of the story and her abduction happen in the same day, the writing makes us feel as though we have known her for a longer time and so her capture and suffering really does hurts the reader too, especially as we are privy to her modest dreams for the future.

Lord Davien makes no bones about the fact that he intends Celeste to be nothing more than a beast; he decrees that she remain naked, crawl everywhere unless she is given permission to stand upright and is not allowed to speak. After he first snatches her, he spends the night at a sympathetic friend's house before boxing her up to spirit her away to his estate in England. His friend does at one point ask why he doesn't prefer to train a willing woman, well the answer to that question is that he has very particular ideas about the kind of submission he desires, according to him once the unwilling are broken their submission is deeper than that of the willing. Of himself he says he "doesn't have a heart" and of Celeste he says she has "no name, no rights and no choices".

I hadn't read this author's work before and I was rather curious to see how any sort of romance could possibly spring out from the circumstances. I did find it extremely hard to read for much of the time because of Davien's sadistic nature and the inclusion of several elements in the genre that I simply cannot take. I think I should strongly emphasise that if you are looking for a BDSM story that includes the SSC principles then keep looking as this is NOT the book for you. The heroine suffers rape and extreme violence. Although the story shook me I did admire the writing.
