Joni Eareckson Tada Offers 25 Hymns for Worship for Difficult Times As an author, speaker, and advocate for people with disabilities, Joni Eareckson Tada has inspired people around the world with her story of faith in the midst of suffering. In this beautiful collection of hymns and devotions she acts as a “song leader,” guiding readers through their own painful seasons with heartfelt praises to God. Songs of Suffering includes 25 hymns with accompanying devotions and photography designed to spark hope in hardship. Opening with a special message from hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty, this book is a source of comfort for anyone who needs biblical encouragement, prompting readers to seek refuge in the Lord and rejoice in his goodness.
Joni Eareckson Tada is an American evangelical Christian author, radio host, artist, and founder of Joni and Friends, an organization "accelerating Christian ministry in the disability community".
Thoroughly enjoyed Joni’s selection of hymns and her brief devotional thought accompanying each. Beautifully designed book, and thought provoking thoughts on the theme of suffering.
"Together may we raise above the discord of suffering a glorious symphony of praise to our Savior." God made us to sing His praise, and there are songs appropriate for every season of life. Definitely recommend this book for anyone going through hard things, especially for those who have no song in their heart.
4 stars, plus a bonus star for Joni’s own voice reading and singing the audiobook. I’m sure I will treasure this recording for years to come. Her work always challenges me to reorient my perspective toward my pain and submit my thoughts to Christ.
I’ve very slowly made my way through this beautiful devotional over the last year or so - reading many of the devotional entrees several times through - and have loved every single minute spent consuming both Joni’s thoughts and the hymn lyrics.
I gifted this book to my mother for Christmas in 2022. Approximately 5 months after I gave her this book, we shockingly learned she had very aggressive cancer. I dropped everything to go care for her and had about 7 weeks with her before she went home to be with Jesus. During those weeks, I sang many hymns to her, some that are included in this devotional. After her passing, I brought this book back home with me, and a gift that had originally been for my mother became a gift to myself as I was entering into the sufferings of grief.
I recommend this book to everyone but especially to those living with chronic pain or walking through a season of intense grief or suffering. Joni points us to Jesus as we suffer and shows us how to suffer well with our eyes always on Him.
It's all too easy to think/wish/hope that the Christian walk is easy. And yet, we see all too many examples both today and within the Bible that that is just simply not the case. (But, Lord, if you want me to walk an easy road, I'm okay with giving it a shot. Just saying. :D)
Jesus says in John 16:33 that we will experience trials and tribulations in this world; Joni Eareckson Tada is one example of that. She shares parts of her story here in _Songs of Suffering_, along with sharing many others' stories--spanning centuries. Life is anything but easy. But some of the most beautiful hymns--and frankly songs in general--have been written out of the depths of horrific pain and hardship. This book brings a sampling of those to light, reminding me I--we--are not alone in pain; not only is it not unique to me or to humankind, but our Savior! He experienced the ultimate! And hymns, both those written many moons ago and more recently (yayyyy Getty team, for one), remind me of so many rich theological truths.
_Songs of Suffering_ presents an incredible collection of hymns, both familiar and new to me (and I can't wait to look up the new ones!). I love how Tada correlates music with memory; it's so true that setting things to music helps me, for one, remember them so much better. The formatting on the sheet music was a bit wonky for me (the joys of eARCs), but I'd probably end up looking them up on YouTube anyway to get an idea of the actual tunes. And the included photography was just stunning!
An encouraging read I could stand to revisit many a time over years to come.
I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This book serves as an encouragement along the road of suffering, a call to worship in every season, and as a focuser of our gaze on Jesus, so it is truly for any Christian. But, it is especially for the Christian who is feeling weary in their current season. Joni writes with such vulnerability, with compassion, but also with conviction and hard truth. Conviction and truth forged in her heart through her own path of suffering.
As Christians, our lives are certainly not free from suffering, but we have the promise of leaning on Christ in the midst of our challenges. In exploring 25 lesser-known hymns, Joni will teach you a biblical approach to your pain that doesn’t minimize it, but rather implores you to press into it. As you press into your hardship, you are actually pressing in closer to your Savior who walked the ultimate path of suffering on our behalf. “…being shoved messily against Jesus’s Brest was a reservoir of hope and help. So I came to terms with suffering the way she did - through an earnest grappling with the angel of the Lord in which He finally prevailed.”
Thank you to crosswaybooks for a complimentary book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
This book is just beautiful. What a treasure! This is good for any season of life and would also make a good gift to someone going through a difficult trial. Joni does not waste words so every short 2-3 page chapter packs a punch.
I knew I would love this book. Joni walks us through 25 of her favorite hymns that bring consolation and strength to her soul. My advice is to listen to the audiobook, because hearing Joni sing the hymns adds another layer of glory to this beautiful devotional.
If anyone has earned the right to talk and write about suffering, it’s Joni. Fifty years in a wheelchair and her life as a quadriplegic would be sufficient, but add to that chronic pain and a cancer diagnosis, and she has clearly done her research and has my full attention!
Perhaps physical challenges are your daily reminder that we live on a fallen planet. Maybe your unique brand of suffering comes from some other, less tangible, less visible direction. We all need reassurance that our suffering is not for nothing.
Hymns of the faith have been Joni’s most reliable source of inspiration and have been her ammunition against discouragement in her long battle with suffering. Their lyrics carry deeply true words about God that somehow escape us when we’re in pain or afraid. Good theology enables the believer to interpret our circumstances in light of what’s true about God–rather than the other way around!
I’m grateful for all the years I’ve spent singing in choirs and standing behind an open hymnal because much of the work of memorizing hymn lyrics has been done for me by simple osmosis. Even so, I discovered several new-to-me hymns in Joni’s collection, and I look forward to singing and learning their deep lessons. Each of the twenty-five selections is followed by a devotional thought, fighting words lifted directly from Joni’s experience with life’s battles.
Songs of comfort are a hopeful companion for seasons of loneliness when fighting discouragement feels like a part-time job. Take grace for this–and take the comfort God offers to you in affliction, for his promises truly are the path to life.
Many thanks to Crossway for providing a copy of this book to facilitate my review, which is, of course, offered freely and with honesty.
This devotional was such a balm to my soul on rough days in bed. I'm so thankful for Joni, for her testimony, her perseverance through trials, and her rich theology of suffering.
I highly recommend this for those who are suffering various trials. It is such a gentle and calming listen (or read). Sometimes, as we wrestle with our suffering, some books on suffering are intimidating or hard to accept (especially at the beginning of the suffering journey). This book deals head on with suffering, but in a way that sweetly sets your gaze on God, and the hope we have in Him.
I also recommend this for those who haven't suffered much. When I was young, I was definitely intimidated by books on suffering, and would become very anxious about my future when I tried to read them. This devotional has such a sweet tone, and even as you hear testimonies of those who endure difficult trials, these testimonies encourage hope rather than inspire fear. In fact, even though it's a devotional, it's a great tool to help teach people how to suffer well and wisely.
This is my favorite book so far this year. Joni’s heart for the Lord always shines, but seeing her pair her joy and her suffering meets the heart like little else. She takes hymns and speaks new life into them, often sharing about her own, her friends’, and other thoughts on suffering. As one who struggles with daily physical pain, it was a gift to not only have someone articulate the day-to-day struggles, but also the incredible joy that you gain as you learn to bring it to God. While this book will uniquely meet individuals who have a physical ailment, I would recommend it to everyone. I was able to compile a playlist of hymns she recommends and am grateful for the imagery I now have as they point me to Christ. If you want to be encouraged, look no further! The book itself and the images within are also gorgeous.
Songs of Suffering 25 Hymns and Devotions for Weary Souls by Joni Eareckson Tada Pub Date 02 Aug 2022 Crossway Arts & Photography | Christian
I am reviewing a copy of Song of Suffering through Crossway and Netgalley:
Joni Eacerson Tada is no stranger to pain, both physical and emotional, the author, speaker, and advocate for people with disabilities, has inspired readers for well over four decades. At seventeen a shallow dive rendered her a Quadriplegic, and for years she has battled with Chronic pain, breathing issues, and Cancer, a living testimony of God using those the world looks out as broken.
Turning twenty five hymns, complete with Devotions, and beautiful photographs, Songs of Suffering is a one of a kind devotional, created to spark hope even in lives hardships, Joni Eacerson Tada’s life certainly reflects that.
If you’re looking for a devotional that reminds you that Hope can be found even in suffering, then I highly recommend Songs of Suffering.
Job 35:10 — '... ‘Where is God my Maker, who gives *songs in the night*'.
In this devotional, Joni takes us by the hand and shows us how God is bringing her through the valley of the shadow of death, with songs and praise. It is so inspiring! The audiobook is AMAZING! Joni sings each hymn and the devotionals are a balm for all who suffer. It is also a guide on how Joni suffers well in her afflictions. I am so grateful I got to listen to this book, I highly recommend it.
A beautiful reflection on suffering and singing through it. Music has such a power to plant truth deep in our hearts in a place that sometimes you can only access in the most painful of seasons. Joni beautifully discusses how these hymns have encouraged her and her pain pals as they walk through hardships and pain, displaying the power of God and community in suffering.
It’s easy to see a clip of Joni talking and think she’s just naturally an upbeat person; this devotional digs into her own dark struggles with God’s sovereignty and the truths that have given her joy in the midst of pain, in turn providing strength to me. A beautiful book in every way.
Not only are the songs and devotionals beautiful but so is the book itself. I was encouraged in my faith from Joni's testimonies, the stories of hymn writer's and how these songs have impacted others as well as the songs themselves. Definitely recommend.
This book was an absolute delight to read. I love Joni Eareckson Tada as an author and she gives such great commentaries on the songs she's written about. This book is enriching and would make a great book to go through as a family as a way to learn about these great hymns. It also would look great on a coffee table.
Such an encouraging book. My daughter referenced this is a presentation on why we should sing & read the hymns. This has led to my purchase of a hymnal (Hymns of Grace) and a Spotify hymn list to start and end each day. A bonus to listening to the audio version is hearing Joni sing the hymns.
What a beautiful, beautiful book! I received an advanced digital copy from NetGalley in exchange for a review, but I will be purchasing this book for myself and for everyone I know this Christmas. These hymns and accompanying stories are filled with so much truth and hope!
Soothing and soulful encouragement to meet Christ and be strengthened while in the depths of your pain. This book includes 25 hymns (some I knew, some I didn't) accompanied with coordinating devotionals, scriptures, lovely nature photographs, and quotes. The author's perspective as a quadriplegic person and a cancer survivor are inspirational. The inclusion of sheet music in this book was a nice touch. I recommend this for Christians who want something for personal devotion/worship, as well as church worship leaders.
Other than wishing the book had a different title, (maybe Songs of Hope? or Healing? Relief?), it is a magnificent volume. Joni starts each entry with the words of an hymn, including all verses, followed by a brief devotion/meditation, followed by a printed copy of the hymn in musical form. Any musician can play from this book. Blank space is available for notes, questions, feelings, emotions…
All things considered, bound beautifully, encouraging and inspiring; a lovely gift📚
Joni shares openly about her suffering and pain and walk with Jesus as she has clung to the promises of Scripture through the songs of the church - and seeks to drive home that faith in God is worth all the hardship. To read this book and feel as though you have a fellow suffering believer walking alongside you, and encouraging you to keep going, is a precious gift.
Colossians 3:16 exhorts us to let the Word of Christ dwell in our hearts richly, that when we have deep gratitude in our hearts, we will be able to respond to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. The Book of Psalms is a wonderful collection of amazing spiritual insights and worship. We sing not only when we are happy, we sing even as we lament the struggles of this life. Entitled "Songs of Suffering," this book is an attempt to make sense of some of the most popular and powerful hymns used through the centuries. Written and compiled by one who has known suffering personally, Joni Eareckson Tada who is a quadriplegic, shares with us spiritual insights and learnings from 25 hymns. Not only should these hymns be sung more frequently, the author believes that the lyrics should be memorized as well. Many of the hymn lyrics contain powerful theological truth. Included in this collection are devotional lessons, inspiring events, and strength for the soul. Each chapter begins with a Bible verse to anchor our thoughts on. The author then weaves her own stories and experience into the telling of the story and the relationship to the hymn itself. This is followed by a melody score with words and music for musicians to play and sing along to.This is helpful for those who find the hymns unfamiliar. She ends the book with a "reprise" which is a musical reflection and some last-minute advice. She divides the hymns into the following categories: - 1) Songs of Comfort (8 hymns) - 2) Songs of Strength (8 hymns) - 3) Songs of Hope (9 hymns)
My Thoughts ============== It takes one who is suffering to know what suffering actually entails. For many years, Joni Eareckson Tada has been an inspiration and encouragement to many people. One does not have to experience suffering in order to appreciate the angst. I have read several of her books and have always found them encouraging. In our often fast-paced world and busyness, it takes discipline to slow down and reflect on life. When stung by some of life's greatest challenges, we are often forced to stop and ask about the meaning and significance of life. Joni's experience of suffering helps her resonate with some of the most compelling hymn-writer stories. Having contracted Covid herself in 2020, she clung on the hope in God as she deals with the fearsome illness. The hymn "Be Still My Soul" helps her heart to prepare a place to sing a song of trust in God. The hymn "Abide in Me" reminds her of John 15 and how much we need to be "wedged" in the Lord. The famous hymn "It is Well with My Soul" is particularly relevant to the author. It helps her ponder on the question: "How is it I keep smiling after so many years of quadriplegia?" Our life experiences can lead us to a deeper appreciation of the hymns of old.
Thankfully, songs of suffering are not just about lament. There are hymns that give strength to the weary soul. The hymn "O Church Arise" is a drumroll of strength in God. "Immortal Invisible God Only Wise" is a powerful reminder of how big God is. Hymns like "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" point us to Jesus as the Author and Finisher of our faith, and also a fellow sufferer. The hymns selected for the section on hope point us to the deep love of Jesus, our future hope in the coming kingdom, and many more. With beautiful accompanying photos, this book helps us use most of our senses and focus them on God. With ears to listen to the music, eyes to capture the beautiful image of creation, and senses to discern the movement of God's Spirit in us, we can let God lead us to a place that is beyond ourselves.
This is a book for all believers. One does not necessarily have to suffer or struggle now in order to appreciate the message in this book. In fact, we all go through the ups and downs of life. All of us would surely have moments of doubt and despair. When those times happen, we can remember what we learn from this book. Let this book point us not only to spiritual relief in our hearts but also to point us to the Giver of all Comfort: God Himself.
Joni Eareckson Tada is CEO of Joni and Friends, a global ministry that serves the practical and spiritual needs of people with disabilities. She is also an artist and the author of numerous bestselling books, including Joni; A Place of Healing; and When God Weeps. Joni and her husband, Ken, reside in Calabasas, California.
Kristyn Getty studied English and ethnomusicology at Queens University, Belfast, graduating in 2003. She and her husband, Keith Getty, write modern hymns for the church. Together, they founded and lead the Getty Music label, publishing house, events company, and foundation, all of which exist to develop and steward modern and traditional hymns around the world. Kristyn and Keith live in Nashville, Tennessee with their four young daughters.
Rating: 4.25 stars of 5.

A review of Songs of Suffering: 25 Hymns and Devotions for Weary Souls by Joni Eareckson Tada for Crossway
When I picked Joni Eareckson Tada’s new book, Songs of Suffering: 25 Hymns and Devotions for Weary Souls, I had no idea how much I needed this book. Using the familiar hymns of the church, she guides readers on a journey from lament to gospel hope. Tada is no stranger to suffering and uses her own experiences to carefully and compassionately point struggling Christians to the Lord. In 1976, she authored a best-selling autobiography chronicling her struggle with quadriplegia, suicidal ideation, doubts, and depression. In 1979, Joni founded Joni and Friends, an organization that exists to “accelerate Christian ministry in the disability community.” In this new book, she craftily writes devotions that reflect on the Lord’s kindness and accompany each hymn.
The book is divided into three types of hymns. Beginning with songs of comfort like Be Still My Soul and Jesus, Lover of My Soul, Joni guides readers to songs of strength like When I Survey the Wondrous Cross and Dear Refuge of My Weary Soul. Finally, she leads readers to their final destination by encouraging them with songs of hope like Standing on the Promises and When We All Get to Heaven.
At the end of the book, she exhorts readers to memorize the words and tunes of as many of these timeless hymns as possible. She encourages us to consider printing the words of these hymns in order to weave the words of these hymns into our prayer life. Ultimately, Tada challenges us to give our suffering over to the Lord — the God who enters into our weakness and sorrow — through song and prayer.
During a time of crisis in my own life, a local minister once told me that his prayer for me was that, in the end, I would see God’s goodness and that I would be able to trust his goodness until then. When I think of these words, I think of Joni Eareckson Tada’s life.
Though I am near the beginning of my journey, I thank God that I can look to the example of Joni Eareckson Tada, as a faithful Christian who has endured great loss and clung to Jesus. She is a woman who has lost more than we can imagine — the ability to use her hands and feet — and yet she consistently shows us that she has gained far more — eternal life with Christ. Her life is a testament to this very truth.
Even when she could not see the goodness of God, God led her back to himself. Now, at age seventy-three, she is able to look back and see God’s goodness in the end.
If you’re walking through suffering, take hold of this gospel hope and remember that when we all get to Heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be! When we all see Jesus, we’ll sing and shout the victory! May these things be true of us. May we be the kind of people who suffer faithfully and endure hardship with resolute hope in Christ’s promises. May we follow Tada as a guide as we navigate the pain and anguish in our own lives.
How can Christians find the strength to sing in the midst of their suffering? In Songs of Suffering, Joni Eareckson Tada presents 25 hymns and devotions for weary souls.
A Wonderful Work of Art
Housed in a beautiful hardcover, this excellently designed book combines hymns, devotions, and photography into a wonderful work of art. The devotions dive deep in emotions, but Tada tells us all to cling to Christ. The high-quality photography is striking, showcasing vibrant colors and natural beauty.
After a foreword by Keith and Kristyn Getty, the book opens with Part 1: Songs of Comfort, and my favorite Be Still My Soul. Part 2: Songs of Strength, features a Getty favorite -- O Church, Arise. The book closes with Part 3: Songs of Hope, fittingly featuring When We All Get to Heaven.
The Strength to Sing
I was most moved by the Songs of Strength in the middle of the book. Tada tells of saints who did not shrink back in their suffering, but found the strength to sing through it. I remembered the role that music has in the life of the church and in the hearts of her saints.
What I most enjoyed were how the hymns were showcased with lyrics as well as the printed sheet music. It helped me appreciate the beauty of melody, but also the craftsmanship of poetry.
Dear Refuge of Our Weary Souls
This book will help you see God’s hand behind your hardship. It’s a testimony to the truth that God is still good in difficult times. It’s a summons to sing to our redeemer, the refuge of our weary souls.
I received a media copy of Songs of Suffering and this is my honest review.
There are some books you read for personal growth, some for entertainment, and then some just to feed your soul. This book, for me, was the latter.
Joni has been an inspiration to so many over the decades but during this season of my life her voice has grown louder. I am one who has suffered with chronic pain for the past decade after decades of a very active and healthy lifestyle. Bouts with doubt, depression, and frustration have been themes of this decade to say the least.
But then in September I took my staff to the Getty's Sing 2022 Conference in Nashville and Joni shared. It was there I first heard of this book and bought a copy for myself, and also ordered copies for the numerous people I love whose stories seem to be marked by suffering. I figured this book would be good simply because it's the perfect combination of Joni + the songs I've cherished. It was beyond good. It was rich.
Every morning in my prayer time I would read one of these daily devotions and play the hymn assigned to that day's devotional. This book helped bring clarity to the purpose of suffering found in Scriptures. I am eternally grateful.
The book ends with a poem by Edward Henry Bickersteth that brings everything to a perfect conclusion...
"And man a rolling anthem, that fills the Father's home, sobbed out its first rehearsal, in the shade of a darkened room."
This book... When Joni Eareckson Tada leaves, (if she leaves first), I'm sure going to cry. Sure. Yes a lot. I also admire her husband so much. I have a mixture of nostalgia for a sensitive, empathetic woman that I only know from a distance.
I have been strongly exhorted, encouraged, challenged by her, through her attitude towards her pain and grief. I have read her books, listened to her lectures, meditated on her messages, all I have seen is sincerity, brokenness and empathy.
What always amazes me the most is her huge smile and the way she sings in the midst of her weakness🥲. It must not be easy at all, given her condition and history. Radiate joy.
I am thankful that she has not wasted her brokenness, for the example she has set even from her wheelchair. "Songs of Suffering" is not only beautiful in its hard cover material, printing, finishes and photography, but in its content as well. Even if you are a musician, you will appreciate that they included sheet music of the hymns inside (if you buy the audio version, you will hear it singing a verse of each hymn).
When *I received the book, it had been very difficult days for me, very hard. inexplicable. So seeing the image where Joni is smiling and singing, reading her words, the devotionals, made me smile and I thought: “yes, only with God can we continue and smile and encourage others in the midst of physical, relational, and emotional pain. ”.
Everything that God has done through that tired, broken, fragile clay pot gives me tenderness. If you purchase the audio version of the book you will hear Joni sing a verse of each. It's very sweet. A beautiful gift for anyone suffering from a chronic, incurable disease or a long recovery process. Even if you are healthy right now, it can put things in perspective and increase your appreciation for the gift of health.
Reading his words and poems, his confessions and vulnerability, humiliates me and makes me raise my eyes and give thanks to God for his goodness, in what we, without knowing, consider good, bad or terrible. *ARC courtesy of Crossway
