The truce between the vampires and the shifters is long over. So when the two factions stumble upon a lost fae warrior who has no idea what she is, all hell breaks loose.
Charity hasn't had it easy. Growing up in a bad part of Chicago, left by her mother at 16, she's a survivor. So when she gets a scholarship to a good college out in California, she thinks all her dreams have come true.
Instead she falls head first into a nightmare.
At a posh party she doesn't belong, she gets the shock of her life: vampires and shifters are real! Magic is real. And she is anything but a mundane poor kid just trying to make it.
Warrior runs in her blood. If only she knew how to use it.
Suddenly, she is trapped between two magical super powers - a cunning elder vampire who wishes to use her for her blood ties and maybe tie her to the bed, and a sexy alpha shifter who will protect her at all costs.
Her life of surviving never could've prepared her for this. And if she doesn't learn to harness the fae magic running through her blood, she'll be imprisoned forever.
Action, humor, and romance - we're going back to the DDVN World!

It’s possible that K.F. Breene is my new favorite author. She just writes these AMAZING and vivid stories! Strong STRONG female heroines. This one is no exception.
This is a continuation of the Born In Fire/Natural Witch series with Reagan & Penny (but they don’t show up until the very end).
Thank goodness the second book of this trilogy comes out Oct 15.
In this book, you get a lot more were/shifter perspective and you see vampires as the villains. Especially Vlad.
➤ Well, this was unusual...? The hero Devon gets aroused by another female and the heroine Charity doesn't even mind. I'm not someone who's bothered by something like this, they're not together yet so I'm okay with it but I can't deny that it was hella weird.
➤ I appreciated that Charity wasn't one of those TDTL girls. She had good instincts and listened well, though I hated that she saw everything as a challenge and flew off the handle quite often, which in turn made her seem stupid again 🤦♀. Apparently, it's in her nature but I couldn't help but compare her to those small chihuahua dogs who like to pick fights with the larger ones. I wasn't sure if I liked her or not. The same goes for the H. He was incredibly moody and their overall dynamic was odd. Their hate-to-love felt more like two kids fighting over stupid things, and it wasn't even "innocent bickering" but both would get REALLY temperamental and they'd fight. Literally. I didn't get it 🤷♀. And then, once they slept together their feelings developed awfully fast.
➤ I really liked the pack, especially Andy was hilarious!
➤ The fighting scenes were great. Charity could kick ass, even without her magic. Oh, I also liked her loyalty, once she became part of the pack.
➤ After 3 DNF-es, this book was able to hold my attention, which is why I'm rounding up to 4 stars.
Mind blown....is the best way I can describe my feelings after reading this book.
Before I dive in with my thought *Reader Warning* there are no hot sex scenes to be found in this read; there are some scenes but not the kind where you need a sweat towel and a glass of water close by; that being said the story/writing made it all up to me!
Such a compelling storyline. Each character was clearly crafted by loving hands and detailed to perfection. World build blew my socks off. To say I was completely engaged in this read would be an understatement. The brief description of the read does not do it justice. It far exceeded my expectations.
Charity is my favorite type of heroine. Smart, smart-arsed, survivor, and a fierce warrior. Like most great FMCs she had a difficult child hood but has managed to lock down a scholarship, and been able to make her basic ends meet. One trip to one party changed it all....her world explodes into chaos. Finding things she never thought existed truly do and finding there has been something inside of her waiting to break free. Gah so good!
The way the world is built the alphas basically have tiers. Devon is an alpha on a lower tier. With a young pack and the responsibility of hunting down newbie vamps he is all seriousness and surliness. Driven to prove himself and move up in their hierarchy. Then this tantalizing smell reaches him, and it belongs to the one woman who is completely unaffected by his dominant vibes. In fact Charity flexes her own dominant vibes and it excites both man and wolf.
But wait there is more....Vlad is a high ranking vamp who has lived many years and has more power than Devon can deal with. Vlad has gotten a smell of Charity as well, and he offers her the world on a golden platter, but she refuses him. Now all the pleasantries are over and Vlad is determined she will be his to have and to hold.
I wish I could be as enamored, as so many other people are, with this series/universe that author has been fleshing out for quite a few books, but that's simply not the case. The concepts are so interesting but the characters just don't do it for me. The writing also doesn't pull me in. My battle with books by this author is becoming frustrating.
Charity walked the very fine line of being annoying throughout the story. I understood her hangups on gifts and money, to a degree, but how you rationalize and then proceed to get angry for receiving something that you're going to be employed for is beyond my capabilities as a human being. Her untrained and untamed magic being all-powerful and being able to almost defeat the big-bad (that no one else that was present could defeat) was disheartening.
Devon was a really nice guy but was always wearing his a**hole persona. He proved time and time again that he was caring and sweet but they fought like cats and dogs. His pack was great until Yasmin came along. She was a disturbance that no one needed and she did nothing for the story overall.
The ending was left open for the next book in the series and I'm not sure if I want to continue on. Maybe when I get desperate for something to listen to I may break down and get to it. Until that time comes I'll be moving onto other books!
The Audio Book:
The narration was great because I adore Nicole Poole's narrations! Though it still sounds strangely muffled. I've definitely heard her sound better in audio books in the past, but that's not on her. It also isn't my headphones either because I got a new set a few weeks ago. Otherwise, the different tones in male and female voices were fantastic!
Why? Why Breene, why? Why write such a clichéd effed up story with the usual boring YA heros, heroines and vamps? How could a writer who created characters like Reagan and Darius so badly eff up Vlad?
I just cant...
This is a clustrfck of a book.
We have Roger and Vlad, two interesting characters from Breene's previous DDVN world. In her previous series, Breene had portrayed the strength of Roger and cunning of Vlad - in this book Roger has become an IT project manager who listens to reports and delegates stuff, while Vlad has become stupid and dumb and one of those "Muhahahahahahahaha" laughing villains who does nothing useful but stands around giving off plot and reasons to heroine while hero somehow miraculously saves her..
And we have Charity and Devon and the vamp Yasmine. Apparently Breene decided it was time to introduce the usual boring YA clichés - the naïve innocent heroine, the playboy commitment phobic hero and the vamp who has nothing better to do except flash everyone and try to seduce a very non-interested hero.
Instead of a fast moving plot, we have cooking scenes, shopping scenes, a boring bed scene and then while all the dark forces are gathering outside, the super powerful heroine and super hot hero just brawls over usual clichéd misunderstandings about the vamp being there.
I never thought I would ever read a book by Breene where I couldn't finish it cos of how boring it is...
A New Fae & Sexy Alpha vs An Old Enemy!!🗡✨🌞🐺 😎 Warrior Fae Trapped: Book #1 (DDVN World #7)
So we're back in the 'world' of Reagan & Penny but this time we're with the Shifters 🐺😍 Sub Alpha Devon, runs a small pack in Santa Cruz. He's young to hold the position he does but he's earned it & doesn't ever want their overall Alpha, Roger, to regret his decision or to break the trust he put in him by promoting him so young!!
Charity has led a life of extreme poverty but she's always had her brains & street smarts.👍 She's made it on her own, with a full ride scholarship, to College in Santa Cruz & she's loving it!!😊💖 She's got a huge crush on a guy, her dorm mate moved them into a small house (She couldn't deal with the grossness of their room & a communal bathroom, so she called her Daddy to rectify the horror) and she even found a working laptop in the 'lost & found'!!🎉 Then they're invited to an exclusive party .... 😳💥
Omg, it's so good to be back in the DDVN World & this book absolutely rocked it!!🎉 Charity is almost a cross between Reagan & Penny, Well maybe a young Reagan 🙈😂 She's got her street smarts, tantalizing smell, she too is an unknown quantity plus she's got put downs that equal a full body slam, they get worse, her snark is strong & grows in power!!😂✨🌞 But like Penny she's clueless to anything other than humans, not even witches. She has no idea what she is, what she'll be able to do & where it originated from!😱 She's also oblivious to the danger she's stepped into, especially when an old enemy decides that she'll be extremely useful to them!!😡😞 I really enjoyed Devon's Pack dynamic. Seeing them from the inside, up close & personal, was fascinating as well as amusing as hell, mostly.😆 I loved Andy & Rods bitching, Andy was just a hoot in general though. Macy is kind & welcoming 💖
This is the type of book that you get lost into. You won't want to move, eat, talk, go to the loo - it'll mean you have to put the book down!🚫🙈😆 The bonds that are forged are hugely satisfying. The new information that's discovered is shocking and some of it could have massive consequences for everyone in the Brink & The Realm!😱😢 The new, & semi new, characters are as engaging, as I've come to expect with this Author's writing & creativity!💕🌟
I'm hoping Book #2 isn't too far behind because the wait, after the revelations in this one, is going to be excruciating!!🙈 An unmissable & addicting series has just gone up yet another notch!!😱🌠💥🐺 Enjoy 😍
K.F. Breene does it again. The DDVN world is by far my favorite of her series. This new addition opens the world even more, making it better than it already was.
Charity is a fantastic addition to this world's cast of strong females. Like Reagan and Penny before her, she is bursting with magic. Every faction seems to want to control her because she could be a game changer in the building war.
Devon is also a great addition. He doesn't steal Charity's spotlight, but rather helps her shine. He's not intimidated by the power she wields but helps her to control it. They are a great match.

Warrior Fae Trapped: Book #1 (DDVN World #7) by K.F. Breene is absolutely brilliantly magical. KF has rocked the house once again. Her stories know no bounds and her creative mind is like a playground where you want to go hang out. I love that she is true to herself when writing her stories and nothing is off the table. It shows with every word written. KF is a true master at weaving her weirdness and translating it into a world that is utterly enthralling and the characters are crazy and wild, sassy and strong and their badassery is to be commended. The sarcastic lines and witticism are a true masterpiece to behold. It is not just a story it is an experience.
I was unable to put this book down, I sat and read it in one sitting as I did not want to lose a minute of momentum. I found myself howling out loud at the banter and one liners, hubby thought I had gone insane.
Charity has street smarts and is brave and sassy and wild and reckless as well. She unwittingly comes across a world that she never knew existed and is clueless and oblivious to the danger around her. She is also more than she seems.
Devon is a sub alpha and runs a small pack of shifters and is still trying to prove himself to the top guy. He is also a one and done kind of guy and he has just found the one person on the planet that drives him insane but his find is more precious than any of them realise. His orders are to protect at all cost but can he fight the evil that is trying to steal her away.
Get crackalacking, if you have never read this type of genre before then dip your toes in the pool. I can guarantee you will love, love, love it.
. This is my first book by this author and it won't be my last ; ) 3.5 stars rounded up because I enjoyed it so much. The audiobook reader, Nicole Poole is great. I was a little nonplussed to find I was reading the 7th book in a series and not the 1st, but it didn't wreck the story for me.
Charity is the quintessential orphan with the sad sack story who has pulled herself up by her own bootstraps. At least, that's what she believes until Vampires enter the mix... followed by other supernatural critters. One being a bad ass sexy wolf alpha. I liked that the MCs weren't instantly enamoured with each other.
It's an action filled story with some great characters. I wouldn't compare KFB to Patricia Briggs but it was still enjoyable. There's an almost TSTL moment for Charity towards the end, that made me wince a bit. Safety is good
Warrior Fae Trapped is the seventh book in the DDVN series. If you haven't read the others you should. This installment introduces some new characters and also brings in some from the previous books.
Charity is a dirt poor college student just trying to get through school to give herself a better chance at life. Her father was abusive and her mother left when she was 16. Charity wants more than what her mother had.
Charity is dumped into the world of magic and the supernatural at a party her roommate convinced her to go to. Neither of them knew it was a turning party with Vlad, an elder vampire, being the host.
Charity escapes the turning party by using her own type magic, magic she had no idea she had. She is rescued by Devon, the local alpha, and his pack, who were at the turning party waiting to take out the newly turned vamps.
At the direction of the regional alpha, Devon takes Charity into his pack for her protection. Thus begins a roller coaster ride for them all as they really don't know what kind of magic Charity has.
As Charity struggles to gain some sort of control over her budding magic she and Devon constantly butt heads, yet she is drawn to him. She knows that no matter how much they argue, he will protect her, keep her safe and give her comfort.
Vlad, however, has not forgotten about Charity. He attempts to abduct her and use her for his own plans. Will Devon and his pack be able to keep Charity safe and out of Vlad's hands long enough to determine if she is truly a Warrior Fae and get her to her people who can train her how to use her magic?
I loved this book! K. F. Breene has done it again with this one. I have read this entire series, her Chosen series and her Demi-gods series and have loved them all. If you haven't read anything from K. F. Breene but enjoy paranormal, with comedy thrown in, you really should give her a try.
This has a real YA/NA vibe to it that was odd, given that the rest of the DDVN series really doesn't.
The hero, Devon, was an alpha-hole who funneled all emotions through rage. He was constantly yelling at or belittling the heroine, Charity.
And she was overly young and naive, swinging rapidly between fury at how he'd treat her to feeling bad for losing her temper. And the two of them mostly interacted by screaming at or punching each other a lot.
And then somehow in the end, they were declaring their love for each other. Out of nowhere.
Honestly, if not for the interconnected DDVN overall plot, I probably wouldn't bother to read the next one. The thought of the YA angst that fortune telling will likely bring just gives me hives.
Warrior Fae Trapped is a continuation of the Demon Days, Vampire Nights universe. Well rounded new characters with a glimpse of some of my favourites. Excellent action and beautifully written. I am already invested in Charity and Devon. I am ready for the next book now.
Well, Couldn't even finish reading this and that is something I am generally loath to do. I just do not care at all for vulgarity in language or explicit behaviors. Cheap tricks do not enliven a tale, they demean it. Could have been a good story.
Have you ever found an author[s] whose books don’t just transport you away for an afternoon but have that magical ability to take your cares away? Like, you might be having a cruddy day, someone yelled at you at work, it’s raining for the umpteenth day in a row and you just want to escape it all? Lo’ and behold [for me] K.F. Breene happens to be my favorite “cheer me up” author.
Her witty quips and self-deprecating character humor bring a depth to the story that a lot of authors struggle to bring to life but she manages to do with great panache. Her newest installment in the DDVN world, “Warrior Fae Trapped” is no slouch, either.
This book is all about Charity, a poor as can be college student trying to keep her head down and her grades up who receives a random invite to a posh party one night. And if it can go wrong, it will. Charity learns very quickly that shapeshifters and vampires are not a thing of myth and legend and both factions are trying to claim her. What’s a girl to do? Kick some booty and take no names - she ain’t got time for that!
While this book can, technically, be read as a standalone, there are references and appearances to much beloved characters from other books in this world. Characters whom have their own trilogies. You’ll want to start with Reagan’s series if you get hooked after reading this one. She’s the craziest and funnest of the bunch but Penny absolutely does not disappoint. So many hours of laughter. Please don’t ever stop writing.
This was absolutely amazing! I love the worlds Ms Breene creates. It’s like slipping into your all time favourite shirt, like when a character from a previous book pops up, it’s like “hello, old friend”. I read this in a day, just couldn’t put it down....at all! I totally recommend this book, and would of given it a load more stars if it was possible, well done Missus, you gone did it again. Keep up the amazing work.
Charity, the main girl, acts like child. Devon, alpha of the wolf shifter pack doesn't know what he wants. Charity constantly challenges Devon because she's "warrior fae". The whole book was just very childish. It was mainly vampires trying to get their hands on Charity, Vlad in particular, because she's Arcana or possibly fae princess, has untried magic powers, oh and she smells amazing! As a result, the shifter pack tries to save/protect Charity.
I always really enjoy K.F. Breene's books and this was no exception! Demon Days, Vampire Nights looks to be shaping up into a great series. And it fixed my book hangover! Yay!
Beginning: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Starts off introducing the heroine, Charity. A street-smart girl from Chicago making her own way in Santa Cruz on a full ride scholarship. She goes to an exclusive party in the hills with her roommate that turns out to be much more than just a social affair. An event that will introduce both the hero and the antagonist in the story. Lots of insanity ensues. It's great.
Middle: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Mostly character oriented. Slow build of the arc, but we're seeing little bits fall into place. Started to feel a bit of urgency here, like the characters weren't really comprehending what is about to fall on their heads.
Ending: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is where the action gets epic, and the value of Charity's abilities are finally displayed.
Characters:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Seems like Warrior Fae Trapped is highly character oriented. I think this is one of Breene's strong points. She gets you to care about her creations, not only by touching in their pasts, but by making them relatable as people. Through banter, and sometimes original, funny as hell swearing, you always want to know what happens to the peeps in her books.
Steam: ⭐⭐⭐ I was really unsure about our hero (Devon) at first. He came came off as a self-professed ladies man. A character that admits to sleeping with women then losing interest immediately afterwords. Not unrealistic in all actuality, but a bit off-putting. When a new female pack member shows up early on, she shows her immediate desire for him and he reciprocates in front of Charity. Though there was no attachment to Charity at the time, I had a hard time liking him. Until their first kiss. Holy moly, it was unexpected and 🔥! After that moment he was completely interested in only her, and that makes me a happy reader. One love scene in the book. Also happens in an unexpected manner, and felt a bit contrived, but it needed to happen. I thought it was well written after the surprise of "oh this is happening now" got out of the way.
Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I somehow missed reading the Natural Witch series, (probably because my TBR is a mile long) but I didn't feel overwhelmed with info dumping, and there was just enough to fill in the blanks of the story arc that started in Born in Fire. Was really excited to see Reagan and Darius in a small part. Hopefully, there will more of that in following books. Should be epic!
3.5 stars.. I can't tell you how happy I am to be back in this world. I've been missing my girl Reagan like you wouldn't believe!! This was a pretty good start to the series. It almost had a little "bully romance" type vibe, not quite full blown maybe a more Hate to Love type thing happening. If you aren't already familiar with the world from the 2 previous series you may want to start there, however other than knowing some of the other players in the game here and their backstories etc, I didn't feel like I needed to do a reread to get back into the world. I would recommend starting back there but if you didn't I don't feel like you would be lost.
FMC Charity has always known struggle growing up poor with a drunk for a dad and her mom left her at 16 to basically fend for herself. She knows how to take care of busness but it ill equiped to deal with the rich kid snobs she is dealing with at her new school. Now to add even more to her already overflowing plate she is dunked, head first, into the supernatural world. Not only that but it seems like she might even belong there as more and more power surges up inside of her threatening to overtake her and burn down the world in the process. Its not just her new wolf friends that are interested in her though. A deadly Elder vampire named Val has caught her scent and knows what she is and how best to make use of her, and Charity is stuck fighting for her life once again..
I did love being back in the world.. however, I'm not Charities biggest fan yet.. her constant defiance and angry outbursts is really killing our relationship so far. I'm hoping as she gains more control this will get better! I'll see once I get my hands on book 2 lol. Also I'mma need MOAR Regan in book 2 please and thanks lol.
This barely made it to four stars. The story is good. I like the concept and set up. It’s an old plot of an unknowing woman discovering she’s got more under the hood and that magical being actually do exist. But what started bringing down my star ratings lay in the immaturity that Charity constantly displays. They’re college twenty somethings and it feels kind of highschool-ish maturity. After awhile, it gets really annoying. Then there’s the constant crying or on the verge of crying drama. I can handle drama in rational doses, but I hate it when strong women cry over almost everything. Those two things never really mean I’ll enjoy a book.
Also, the two main characters got together really quick, not necessarily due to lack of getting to know one another, but in the broader scheme of the book, it took only a week... maybe a week and a half?
Still, the fighting scenes added to the overall effect and probably saved this from being a DNF. I also applaud Breene at keeping the the humble upbringings of Charity content throughout the book.
But I’d say to anyone, give it a try. It might be wise to note that this book does delve into the other books of this series and should be known that this is not a stand-alone book.
What a pleasure to get to immerse myself back in the DDVN world! Charity is a smart, brave, reckless, and wonderful heroine. As she emerges in the supernatural world with a bang, she meets Devon and his pack of Santa Cruz shifters. Coming from hard and traumatic backgrounds, it takes Charity and Devon a bit of stubborn back and forth to realize how important they are to each other, the pack, and the world at large, but with crisis after crisis coming down upon them, especially in the form of Vlad, their loyalty never wavers. With appearances by all of our favorites and the promise of an over all story line that is both exciting and full of passion and adventure, Trapped is a rewarding read that will suck you in and spit you out on the other side with a hope that book 2 isn't too far behind. Such a great read!
So in the DDVN series Reagan has been my favorite until now. Now they're (Charity and Reagan) are both favorites. I love and feel compassion for her extremely humble start. I grew up poor, but not that poor. I cannot wait to continue the series.
At times it seemed like this was written in another language and translated into English. I read it and listened on audible while driving. The reader sounded like a robot. It was awful.
Another utterly enthralling read from K.F. Breene as we get to go back to the DDVN world, I just don't know how she manages to up the ante everytime and produces these stories that leave you enraptured and immersed in their world, so much so that I did not want to leave and found myself really quite resentful that I had to put my kindle down!! Book 2 can't come quick enough for me!!!
In this story we are spending time with one of Roger's wolf shifter packs headed up by a young up and coming sub alpha Devon who has shown some real good promise, he runs a tight knit pack that work together as a family, though he is known to be a bit stubborn and brusque and doesn't deal well with things emotionally having had a real bad and rough upbringing. He doesn't do relationships and only spends one night with a girl before becoming emotionally detached from her and moving on.
Charity lives life on the poverty line, having and owning next to nothing, having a full scholarship to school and being street smart and intelligent and keeping her head down and just working for her grades. She lives off campus with her affluent friend Sam and ends up being invited to an elite party due to Sam's friend dropping out. Sam basically forces her to go and Charity is anything but comfortable going. Little do they know what they are about to walk into.....
Oh my goodness it was so good to be back in the DDVN world!!! Charity is an absolute star, full of street smarts, good at martial arts and has enough sass and banter in her to rival Reagan! I loved watching her magic start to seep out and her innate but untried ability in her magic, using and doing things on her feelings alone. She is completely oblivious to the magical world and everything about it, and her reaction to finding out about shifters and vampires was fabulous. Her run ins with Vlad the elder vampire from other books in the DDVN world was really exciting to watch and she tries out her powers on one of the most powerful vampires in existence!
Devon and his pack of shifter wolves were a real treat to watch too, they worked really well as a team and listened to their Alpha, so when Charity challenged Devon it always caused a bit of a stir. The times when she used her powers to challenge Devon's alpha authority was stunning, you could literally feel the tension and the force of their challenge as you were reading, gave me goosebumps!
Devon is a great sub Alpha for Roger and is always trying to prove his worth to Roger and ends up in charge of capturing the newbie vampires incorporating Charity in the pack which adds a whole new level of oomph to their dynamics!! Devon is confused by his growing feelings for Charity and his protectiveness about her even though they end up fighting on many levels including physically when she needs to vent her frustration with her powers.
Lots of witty and sarcastic banter throughout the story, some fabulous one liners that had me howling, hot exciting chemistry and some wonderful appearances from other DDVN characters and you have a book that you just can't put down. A very exciting and dramatic storyline that could have some huge consequences for the characters in DDVN world with the way the plot was going.....
Seriously, if you're into fantasy / PNR then this DDVN world is not to be missed, brilliantly written, in a totally immersive world, I can't recommended these highly enough. Book 2 is going to be a painful wait for me!!!
I enjoyed this book enough to want to read book 2 when it comes out next month & put it in my queue to watch for it when it releases. The flow was good, & it held my attention enough that I was trying to sneak some reading in at work to see what happens next! There were a few wobbles in the plot, and few typos that caused hiccups reading. Charity was an interesting main character, I liked her for the most part, but some of the things she did just didn't make sense to me. Devon was a love him-but-hate him type of hero- main character, I had some personal issues with him because of his temper. He definitely isn't the guy I would want for a book boyfriend, though I could see a lot of other gals that would love him. He does work for the part though, & I don't really hate him, just not the type I like for my preferences. The ending was a minor cliff-hanger, not leaving anyone in the lurch, but definitely wanting to see where Charity is headed. I can't wait to see where this goes in book 2.
*as an after thought after seeing mention in another review about this being a spin-off, I did not know this was a spin-off from another series by this author. I feel this is definitely stand-alone, I was not lost -at all, having not read the other series that this came from. Though I'm interested in picking up that other series now.
First, the good. It's an interesting idea and the universe is compelling. It could have been an entertaining read, but I closed it more times than I can count to roll my eyes and take a breather. I don't know what was worse, that the book read like a bad YA novel with too much sex to be YA, that it read like a middle-school fantasy, that it read like it was written by an adult who couldn't remember what it was actually like to be 20 something, that everything was ridiculously implausible, that the words "resistance is futile" was unironically uttered by a character, that the characters were caricatures, that the dialog was uncomfortably awkward...I seriously do not understand these five-star reviews. Read some better books, people. Raise your bar.
Charity is a poor kid who has successfully made it to college through hard work and dedication. Unfortunately, things turn upside down when a party’s events unfold. The story is entertaining and interesting. The characters are believable and relatable. The biting and witty sarcasm is quite entertaining! The slow attraction simmer between Charity and Devon is appealing. I was really glad that Vlad, in all of his bastardized glory, made a bigger appearance in this book. His machinations are boundless. Some of the other DDVN characters have a small side part. Looking forward to book 2!!
This had all the fabulously wonderful elements that have made K.F. Breene one of my favourite authors: witty dialogue, humour, plenty of action, a strong heroine, romance and a good dash of the paranormal. While my favourite in the DDVNs novels will always and forever be Reagan who introduced me to the hysterical ride that is Breene, I'm going to go as far to say that this is a pretty close second. Yep, this is a big call, but I'm making it, so there. While I liked Penny and the Natural Witch series, our heroine in Trapped, Charity, is more my style and while not as crazy as Reagan, made the book really enjoyable for me. For those that don't know what I'm talking about, you absolutely do not need to have read the former books to start this one and be drawn in, but as a long time fan of DDVN, I'm going to be dropping a bit in about the other books and characters. And if you haven't read them, what are you doing with your life? Go out and buy them! NOW!
So, what's the premise of the book? Something I obviously completely missed parts of when I read the author's newsletter and teasers of the book. For some reason, I thought this book was focussing on Roger, the Shifter Alpha, so thought it would involve him and a love interest. Nope. While he features and has a few of his own chapters, he's a secondary character (and a great one, at that). This book focusses on Charity, an independent and resilient woman who's led a pretty tough life but is trying to make the most of it. Being coerced into being a wingwoman for her roommate and friend, Sam, she attends an exclusive party for the rich. On her way there, she's warned off by the tasty Devon, our Hero in the story. At the party, things go to you know what pretty quick and long story short, Charity is drawn into the world of shifters, vampires, demons and other mystical beings. Roger has strong suspicions she's a warrior fae, an ancient form of fae that are revered fighters and used to stand alongside shifters in taking down evil. Charity's powers are gradually getting stronger, as is her intrinsic desire to fight, wielding a magic that is strong and becoming more overwhelming as time passes. When Roger starts hearing whispers about fae royalty, things start to get real.
The characters, for me, where all fantastic. I'll warn you, Charity is young so some of her speech leans towards the informal, but I didn't find it distracting or childish as I saw another reviewer mention. If a chunk of the story hadn't been set around campus and classes, I honestly wouldn't have noticed, personally. If you like Breene's female characters from other books, you'll love Charity. There weren't too many variations here from what the author usually sticks to. Charity is poor (like holes in her shoes and $12 in her bank account poor), had an abusive father, a mother who left her as a teen, she grew up in the wrong part of Chicago and has every reason to be negative but has worked her butt off to land a scholarship, making the most of her opportunities and determined to give life her best. She wasn't done in a cheesy way and the fae and Realm aspect of the plot stopped her from sounding like she'd been done before. Devon was a real treat. Moody and quick to anger, but also caring and protective, he had a bit of everything. While the player and bad boy vibe might have ticked me off, Charity's willingness to sass him, challenge his leadership and be difficult was a clever addition by the author that stopped him from being a douche. The fact that she also had cool, ninja-like moves and superpowers that rivalled Devon's and left Vlad panting was also a nice touch.
Devon is stuck looking after Charity as per Roger's orders after everything goes pear-shaped at the exclusive party, which we find out early on is organised by the delicious Vlad, the vampire we all hate to love. I'm happy to report he remains his ruthless, cunning, devastatingly handsome and enigmatic self throughout the book and glimpses of him popping in and out the story kept me turning the pages. I love him; so sue me. He's had a smell (literally) of Charity and as the word 'No' doesn't seem to be in his vocabulary, he is determined to capture her and make her his and, of course, use her in his devious future plans against the elves. And world domination I'd assume because...well, Vlad.
If you happened to read the great short story about Moss by this author, the starting scenes may seem familiar to you as the reader is taken to a turning party. Personally, even though the author has dabbled in this before, I still found it great to read even if there were some shades of similarity. The short story was terrific (I think it's free on Breene's website?) and I found it just as good reading about a similar event here. The start ensured I didn't put the book down until the blasted thing was finished, much to the dismay (or maybe delight? lol) of my family.
The secondary characters were also a great addition. We get to hang around with Devon's pack and their family dynamic translated well across the pages. I especially loved Andy and Macy. As I mentioned above, Vlad was a welcome, yummy addition and no, I will not stop using food adjectives when I talk about him. We also get to see a few demons and vampires in action as well as other shifters.
As for the writing? Typical Breene. There was a plethora of solid, dry humour that killed me. I love sarcasm and this book had plenty, along with typical bickering and back and forth banter that shows the fabulous dynamic her characters have. Some of the lines were memorable and I know I'll be rereading this book many times. Charity's upbeat take on life brought out some really feel-good quotes from this author and gave a sweet side to not only Charity, but the story. There was a solid build up of tension in the story line and the several action scenes we were given were packed to the rafters with all the good stuff. We were given a well-appreciated dash of steamy vamp tension between Charity and a former crush as well as some one-on-one action between Charity and Devon. I must say, the latter really put a smile on my face. This author normally waits at least two books in to get to the good stuff (you know what I'm talking about, wink, wink), so it was refreshing that we were given a nice taste here.
For fans of Reagan, there are a couple of breadcrumbs thrown in about Lucifer and a nice mention and then cameo of her and Penny. Geez, I love Reagan. Did I mention I love Reagan? This both delighted me and made me want to go a teeny bit Norman Bates on the author. Seriously, the wait for the next lot of books with Reagan is killing me. While this book didn't end on a massive cliffhanger (I hate that!), the story is by far from finished, also making me a wee bit ragey because now I have to wait until next month for the next book. Sigh. Taking a page out of Charity's book, I'm going to put a positive spin on it and say that at least it's only a month. As with all books but this author, I've already one-clicked and can't wait. Dizzy made Charity a sword and I think we're heading back into the Realm so hold onto your hats. I'm expecting big things. No pressure ;)
