San Amaro Investigations #4

A Shattered Silver Crown

Rate this book
Parker Ferro is fine.

Sure, he’s still recovering from his last case and his sister has started keeping secrets, but that’s just another day in the life of the Windrose of San Amaro.

Then the local werewolf alpha calls in a favor when he's turned on by his own pack and the last thing Parker wants to do is get mired in the city's pack politics. Throw in the recent murder of a local cult leader with disturbing connections to the hidden fae in San Amaro, a long lost relative showing up to reconnect, and a group of brownies taking up residence in his car, and Parker cannot catch a break.

Hopefully he can solve this case and figure out some family secrets before everything blows up in his face, taking the city along with it.

A Shattered Silver Crown is a 120k MM urban fantasy with a HFN ending and an ongoing storyline. It cannot be read as a standalone.

I really have loved this series so far, and to my delight, this instalment was no exception.

With the World Tree intact again and inhabitants from many realms having potential access to our world, relations with paranormal creatures become generally more complex. There is a lot of fear on the human side, something which - no doubt - will be further explored as the series progresses. (And Nick is quite in the thick of it, it seems!)

I really loved the author’s critical look at ’humanity’. Are we the worst of the fae? Is there any good in us, or just greed, suspicion and power seeking? Lots of thought-provoking moments!

I really love Parker and his wonderful nature-based magic. He has been growing in powers and character in every book. Facing his past was unsurprisingly painful for him. However, I probably did not expect how things went in the very end. Even if it was justified, I could not help but cringe a little bit at how Parker dealt with one particular person.

Nick and Parker are fabulous and very hot together. I love that they talk, well, at least they’re making an effort. But some deeper points, issues on both sides (like Parker's intense fear that people will leave him) are still largely undiscussed. I wanted more of that and more of Parker and Nick!
Saying that, the plot did keep me glued to my seat, and it is awesome how everything comes together in the end.

However, events around Nick towards the end area seemed a bit rushed.
Something massive happens, and it seemed glossed over very quickly in the aftermath.

As for the last 15% - it is the usual chaotic finale with magic thrown around galore. And yes, I was lost again! Things simply get too complex for my little brain. Sorry!

But all in all I thoroughly enjoyed this and can’t wait for the next book, particular with that little cliffhanger the author has thrown at us.

Congratulations to me for surviving this emotional installment. As Sugar has aptly said, Parker's feelings were like bumper cars and they kept hitting from start to finish.

I felt bad for Parker for the ironic turn of events that left him raw and vulnerable. He can no longer run from his feelings and was forced to accept the realities he'd been denying for so long. This installment contained an entire gamut of emotions. Grief, betrayal, longing, bitterness, hurt, fear, anxiety, and love. The past has finally caught up to him and his burden has increased even more. Nick, however, never steered away and remained by his side when he needed him. He supported him and gave the reassurance he needed to feel loved and secure.

Parker: “I need you to stop saying it because it’s not fair. When you make me promises, I want to keep them. I don’t want to free you from all debts and obligations. Every time I have to free you from the promises, it makes me feel worse because it just means you can leave me. That you think you mean the words, but you don’t because there’s nothing holding you to them.”

Nick: “You want it to be real. You can release me as many times as you want. I’m still going to mean them. Because it’s true. I don’t want to leave you. I won’t leave you. I do love you.”

*sigh ❤️❤️❤️

This is an excellent continuation and on par with the 3rd book. Exciting, engaging, definitely addicting, and the feelings it brought me made me empathize with Parker a lot. The moment of being discovered by everyone about his nature is nearing and he'll have more hurdles to jump. These developments make you look forward to the next books. 🥰

2.5 stars - needs work

2.5 stars for this book and the previous one. Character growth seems to have stalled. Parker's laziness and unwillingness to deal with reality is front and center in these two books. He doesn't deal with his emotions, he doesn't talk to Nick about them or what he's done, and he takes selfish risks. He's the definition of a manchild, throwing tantrums, pouting, and refusing to do basic adult things like clean his car or do laundry. Whenever he gets a moment, he whines about his life and his response to bad stuff is "It's not fair!" Given his history as both a foster kid and someone who spent years with the fae in the far realm, he should be well aware and used to the fact that life isn't fair. Why he screams it like a child multiple times in these books is beyond me. Seriously, can we adult a little in any capacity?

Nick...I like Nick. He feels flat, though, like the author forgot he has more personality than juggling a demanding father and childish boyfriend. He needs dedicated development, preferably in ways that show him demanding more from Parker.

Plot: well, if you don't know who the bad guy is at 50%, then I'd be shocked. Sadly, Parker takes another 25% of the book to figure it out so instead of moving the plot along, there's a lot of thumb twiddling. It does get more interesting near the end, at least. However, Parker being so unable to put the pieces together is worrisome given his PI career and his responsibilities as Windrose. Why he is so shocked in the major fight scene about what happens and who is involved is beyond me. He already knew who the bad guy was and tracked him there, and then acts surprised when the villain shows up? And then his constant inaction until its past critical? He stands there and basically blinks stupidly in so many scenes, I wonder if any lights are on. Then he's surprised when it all unravels around him. Shocking how not acting and not dealing with problems comes back to bite you.

From a writing perspective, Parker's snark is now tiresome. The endless metaphors and similes have become murky burdens to slog through. There are several each page, and when used to redescribe the previous statement, they are often followed by another simile or metaphor. So when I say several on a page, I mean at least 3. And no, they don't add much color because there are so many. It just becomes noise.

I started this series pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Sadly, installments 3 and 4 have been disappointing on multiple levels. The writing needs to be tightened up, the characters need development, and some serious growing up of the MC is in order.

The San Amaro Investigations Series seems to be not as widely known as many other paranormal m/m series. And frankly I don't know why.

All the incredients that typically make a winner series are there: magic and paranormal creatures (fae and werewolves for example), a series of well thought out mysteries, an overlying plot spinning around our mc, a solid set of characters and an intriguing m/m relationship. The relationship works actually very well for me because I get the feeling that they are on the same level in their relationship.

This time around Parker has to help his old werewolf friend and also his blood father appears. I don't want to spoil too much of the story but I can say I thought it was one of the best stories in the series so far.

The best one yet. Action and emotions packed. Grief, love, hope, secrets of the past - the book gave it all. Parker's character growth from book 1 is formidable. And Nick is always there for him. The action plot kept me on my toes and I loved the personal touch it had. The ending promises more of it and I can't wait.

Damn, that was a rollercoaster. I feel like I need a map to navigate the plot properly, there's so much happening and every time I feel like I'm finally starting to see, something bigger is revealed and I'm back to "Noope, just gonna enjoy the ride I guess" 😏

Parker and Nick are still going...not strong, but going. The differences between them are starting to emerge and I'm curious (and fucking anxious jesus christ just let them be happy pleaseandthankyouu) to see how they're going to battle that. Also, I don't know how I managed to forget how severe Parker's trust issues are. He's trying but it goes against his nature and it's straining the relationship. Which...is not a bad thing, honestly, I'd be in disbelief if someone like Parker behaved any differently, so it's pretty realistic this way. Frustrating, yes, but realistic. This boy needs therapy like no other...(yes I love him ❤️)

I absolutely love how the books would be able to stand on their own even without the romance. In fact, even though I love Parker and Nick as a couple, the romance isn't even that prominent - which makes their scenes that much more precious 🥰 The plot itself is so convoluted and interesting it keeps my attention very easily (I take notes. Extensive notes. I thought my college years are behind me 😩)

It seems that the shit is really going to hit the fan in the next book, the ending was something I was waiting for because that one was inevitable. Poor Parker, I would be a ball of anxiety rocking in the corner somewhere...

A Shattered Silver Crown was one of my anticipated books for 2022 and didn't disappoint! So much has happened since the start of this series and yet things just kept getting more intriguing.

In this installment, past and present events entwine as another case took Nick and Parker in another mysterious, thrilling, and high-stake adventure. Like the previous times, Parker seem to be a magnet for trouble with a capital T. This time however things were a bit more personal with his family being a complicated and touchy topic that's mixed in with the current events. Grief, anger, confusion and other complicated emotions accompany him as he and Nick try to solve the cases they were handling.

The worldbuilding in here was still a delight and what additional lore was provided only added more color and richness to the current setting. This story also showed how far Parker has matured in the way he saw himself, his magic and the world at large while still providing character growth in the portrayal of his acceptance of grief, loss and facing all the complicated emotions bubbling within him. The supporting characters were engaging and I particularly liked the focus and growth provided for Laurel in this one. Like her brother, she has come a long way from the early incarnation of herself and that manifested in her acceptance of who she truly was and of the powers she possess. Sugar was still her quirky and cinnamon roll self and Runt was just adorable! A pity she only appeared in a few scenes but those were worth it.

Also, I am so glad that despite everything, Nick and Parker's relationship was still as strong as ever. Whatever obstacles might have been thrown their way or if tensions between them ran high, they were still able to communicate and resolve those problems. The only downside that I saw was Nick didn't get as much development here. Hopefully the next book would see more focus on him. He deserve to get his own moments in the spotlight.

There has been so much going on at the same time with the current plot and some of it were beautifully interlaced with the plotlines of the previous books in the series. Despite that, it never felt overwhelming or forced and the author was able to bring about a satisfying resolution to the main conflict of the story as well as tie some of the loose ends raised in the previous ones. The overarching arc remains intriguing and that ending was such a tease that left one craving for the next book.

If you're looking for a new urban fantasy series to binge on that has some magic-wielding main characters, humor, drama, paranormal investigation and fast action then this book and the rest of the San Amaro Investigations series is highly recommended.

This would be 4.5 stars out of 5 stars for me.

I received an ARC of this book and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.

I loved this so much! Unfortunately, not only did I listen to the audiobook but I finished it like, last week so I don't remember specific things. I would quote the shit outta this book otherwise!

I really love the way the characters and plot has progressed. This one had a lot of really sad moments, but I fuckin' loved it. It also had just as many heartwarming moments and I loved those too!

This is probably one of my all-time favorite series and Greg Tremblay is definitely one of the reasons for that. (I haven't read it so I do wonder how that would go.) He puts so much emotion and care into each character that it is easy to feel. When Ugh. My heart. I'm thinking there's going to be a lot more to this bit in the next book.

I absolutely loved the addition of the brownies! So cute! And helpful. And annoying for Parker. Lol!

I really like the way that Parker and Nick work together. I've probably said that before but it only gets better and better the more they do so, and the more they do magic together. I should also point out that I just love their relationship. They're working as best they can, and possibly even more so to look past their faults and converse about serious matters and past trauma, knowing that it's necessary for, not only whatever case they may be on (potentially), but for their partnerships to work.

Also, how the outlook on humanity and the committee viewed and 'handled' the World Tree. There are so many legit and sad points here.

I am super excited and curious to see how things are going to progress and suuper sad that I have to wait! I'm so used to being late to the party and having all the books to go through. While I was able to go through the first three, having to wait for this one was sad and now the next...! And with the ending...! Although a bit expected... I want to know all the things!

And Runt...! I love soo much!

Oops, hadn't had the time yet to write a 'review' on the previous books of the series. Reason: I just followed up with the next book as soon as I finished one and when I got into GR my mind was on the new book and didn't want to reflect on the previous one. Maybe now that I wrote nothing about the first 3 books it would be a good idea to review the complete series at the end of book 6? Hm, maybe but why wait id I can do a first step now.

Ok, let's do it. We're in a world where paranormal beings are more or less integrated into the human population, some more than others and of course they face the same fate as other minorities. This series doesn't focus on the big picture but gives us an idea about the every day life in-between the lines. Sometimes that's a pity, sometimes an issue but mostly a necessity because there's a lot of action going on and a romance to follow. However the world building is detailed where it should be and the author had interesting takes on some of the well-known paranormal species. It's also a world that knows that earth is not the only realm. Humanity already had its encounters with the fae from the Far Realm but now that a new world tree is planted they are also aware that there are more and that this tree is connecting them all. Don't worry we don't have to suffer from a multiverse confusion. Earth is the focus with visits from the Far and the Dark Realm. All the others are more or less only mentioned.

The magic concept is a delight for my inner nerd. There' the a bit messy witchcraft where everything seems to be available to create a spell. the precise alchemy with its calculated circles and claim for supremacy; the mysterious brujx magic based on the support of saints and not to forget the compelling fae magic. Reading about Parker negotiating with fire, waking up the spirits of trees or singing to water because obviously water enjoys the flow of a song to follow Parker's suggestions, it's a nice fun.

Suppose I write the part about the cast, about the romance and the found family in the review of the next book. For now just a comment about this book: starting it I got the impression this might be the best book of the series so far. The guys had to deal with the emotional aftermath of the last book and their usual coping mechanism didn't seem to work anymore. Additionally Nick and Parker have to deal with serious daddy issues. We already know about Nick's difficult relationship with his father and now suddenly Parker's biological father steps onto the scene and Parker so wants to trust him but can't because he's a stranger and it's not enough that he claims to have searched for Parker for the last 25 years. The addition of the sassy brownies and Runt's, Parker's not-a-cat, shenanigans added the necessary light fun but then there's the case resolution and the motive of the perpetrator that made me decide to cut a star from the rating. I found the motive terribly weak and not adequate to the big scale deceit and the last battle made wonder why humanity should be afraid of a war against the fae. It took a lot of dangerous mystery away from the summer court and I didn't like that.

A fantastic urban fantasy that is still lacking on the romance. I just don’t understand why the author doesn’t have Parker and Nick talk. Like Parker has all these adventures Nick can’t be a part of (ish) and rarely even tells him about them…there’s just something lacking there.

On the fantasy side of things though, this is fun as hell and I’m really enjoying it!

Story: 3.5⭐️
Audio: 5⭐️

This one left me exhausted.

There is A LOT going on in this book and nothing is given any room to breathe. The story picks up 2 months after Shannon dies, and Parker and his sister are in the depths of grief. In Parker's case, that means ignoring any emotion other than anger. Then Malik and his pack are endangered, Parker's fae father finds him, there's a murder of a man teaching humans how to use fae magic...plus several other plot beats that are very weighty, emotional and impactful, but this series is so determined to go at breakneck speed, again everything happens in ~a week. I love a good tortured, flawed protagonist with the literal weight of the world on his shoulders as much as the next person, but there is a fine balancing act needed in stories like this and this one just doesn't feel balanced to me.

Moreover since Parker isn't allowed time to process anything, all the emotional growth he just started in the second book has stalled, and he is stuck in grief so intense it consumes him and keeps him placed in selfishness or anger and lashing out. With everything going on in his life, Parker is stuck in the "life's not fair" mindset, and while it makes sense and is an understandable place to be, it makes him so focused on his potential loss and pain it keeps him from seeing or helping anyone else or "helping" in a way that centers his needs and anger.

He's worried that Laurel is losing her mind but can't handle the idea of losing her so doesn't really help her. She has to pull herself out of what's happening and emotionally save both of them. It gets so bad that even when , Nick doesn't get a chance to process his feelings about it bc Parker is the only one allowed to be upset. When Parker almost gets angry that Nick isn't visibly bothered, it's only bc he glimpses in Nick's eyes that he's feeling some kinda way that he relaxes but doesn't seem to get that Nick can't get upset about what happened to him bc everyone always has to keep Parker from losing it.

There's also so much going on with Parker and focused on Parker that Nick's development as anything other than support for Parker is minimal. Everything about Nick and his upbringing keeps getting glossed over as dialogue asides about his complicated relationship with his dad. Nick's a King, destined for great things but wants a life independent of his father's ambitions, yada yada ad nauseam. Any added weight to this same beat from previous books now centers on Parker and doesn't get fleshed out in a real conversation; with the "logic" of a choice again seeming more for drama than that it actually makes sense.

The case and villain are interesting in a way but one dimensional in the end; Parker himself dubs them a Bond villain. Additionally, given all the "rules" of magical practice that have been broken/mutated in the last few months, Parker's inability to see obvious clues is irritating and again some choices seem to be made for giant, complicated action set pieces as opposed to something these experienced characters would actually do given their aptitude.

All that being said, part of the reason this book is exhausting is that Butler does a great job of steeping me in Parker's pain. Everything he is feeling and doing is understandable, and what he's going through isn't trivial. Grief is so inward that it's an inherently selfish process. Most of it also makes sense for his own emotional shortcomings and how much loss he's had to deal with and hasn't processed. Parker's emotions are constantly being flayed and him left raw so this is an emotional ride. Maybe if I hadn't read the previous book so close to this one and so many other people hadn't needed Parker to think about them separate from his needs and pain, I would have enjoyed it more.

"A Shattered Silver Crown" is a punch in the gut in book form.
I thought book three was tough, but this fourth installment is on a whole new level: it's bitter and rough and unfair and frustrating and wholly, utterly wonderful.

Seeing Parker spiral out of control, being consumed by grief, his responsibilities and the weight of his role in the supernatural community, was tough: I wanted to jump into the book to save him from himself, his suicidal tendencies and his bitter, all-consuming heart-ache.
He deserves so much more than what he got in life. I desperately wanted to kick a certain fae someone and their backstabbing ass: it's certainly strange to note that the Summer Queen is definitely NOT the worst fae in existence.
I've already said this but, I'm so amazed by Kai Butler's ability to depict such a realistic, complex, multi-layered protagonist. Parker has shown so many different sides of himself already: the greedy, manipulative fae, the insecure orfan, the charming flirt, the protective brother and lover, the reckless kickass... And seeing this new Parker, the desperately afraid, grieving Parker? Gah, it made me so emotional. I love him so damn much.

I also appreciated seeing Nick and Parker's relationship being tested: they're definitely endgame, but I love seeing them test each other, and their boundaries, and I'm beyond curious to see what will happen after *that* gobsmacking ending.

The plot was so damn compelling, I managed to devour the whole chunky book in just a few days, and the world-building keeps getting better, more complex and vivid. However, what I loved more than anything (apart from my favourite reckless fae, Parker) was the side-characters. Sugar, Laurel, Runt, Talon, Zahide, Avila, Malik: the whole lot of them own my heart. The found-family vibes are truly top-notch in this series.

I'm so, so, so excited (and terrified) to start the next book: that ending was downright cruel, and I literally gasped out loud. I can't wait to see what will happen.

Excellent, as always. I am so throughly obsessed with this series; I stayed up till 3 in the morning waiting for it to drop on Amazon, started reading, fell asleep, and continued this morning. It was absolutely worth it and I regret nothing.

We’re a solid way into the series now and I think one of the things I appreciate most is how it keeps moving inexorably forward. The story doesn’t wait for the characters to catch up. Something about the way this series is constructed just feels inevitable.

I think what was most interesting about this book, especially in the context of the rest of the series, is the way that the pressure on Parker just keeps mounting, and you can really feel it in this one. He’s been squeezed tighter and tighter: . Something is going to break, and that point feels closer and closer. And yes, of course there’s tension and anticipation and so much action in this series. But it’s all these little cracks that are so carefully woven into the story that just add in this suffocating, claustrophobic fear of what’s going to happen next.

Like I said. I’m obsessed. Thoroughly, completely obsessed with this.

So many things happened in this book, it’s a bit hard to follow. The World Tree problem, the brownies, the long-lost father, and of course a murder that unearthed another magic-crazed conspiracy.

On the mental aspect, we have undealt issues on Parker’s side, his usual fear of being left behind, and a lot of him whining “it’s not fair!” I really hope we get to see more character growth in the next installment because he seriously starts to annoy me.

On Nick’s side, nothing notable happens. Things might become more interesting now that their magic starts to mingle, but not much is explained now.

The brownies are fun, though. And we get to see more of Runt in action. Yay.

Parker is one of my all time favourite characters in this genre. He's stubborn and almost always makes the worst decision possible (but also the most understandable and relatable). I have the softest spot for him and Nick and their messy, complicated yet sweet relationship. I wish we got to see more of them being in a relationship outside the paranormal drama and their interactions with the rest of the characters (that third date! I want!!) but the drama and the action are so good I don't even mind that much. I also enjoy the rest of the motley crew as they face increasingly unlikely dangers. I have said this in prior reviews of this series, but I love that in Kai Butler's world, actions have consequences and nothing is free. It's refreshing and grounded.

Oh, Parker, Parker, Parker - You really need to learn to trust and communicate! This was full of action, mystery, magic, and found family. I loved the ebook so much, I turned around and listened to it too! The audio experience just made me love this book and these characters more. The world is rich and vibrant, full of good, evil, and the in-between. The ending just left me excited for the next book!!

Wow!! What a roller coaster of a fast action, tension building, emotional ride! I felt so much stress wondering what would befall Parker with all the goings on. I feared for the resolution of this story with all the potential of betrayal and strife. I loved Nick, he is the best thing that ever happened to Parker. I also loved Laurel, Sugar, and not-a-cat Runt. I have so many thoughts but I don’t want to spoil anything. While there is still so much left of Parker’s story to tell before the end of the series, this ended better than I feared it would at certain parts. I am so looking forward to more!

It's chaos and mayhem as usual for Nick and Parker. I love how Parker is growing into his role as the Windrose. It's also rare for me to really get invested in all the ancillary characters but I found myself doing just that with this series. Very much recommend. A solid 4.5.

Parker Ferro is back with a bang in the action packed fourth installment of the San Amaro Investigations series. With grief piling up, betrayals and danger every which way, and huge consequences dogging his every move, Parker has to dig deep to find a way out of the mess. And finally, with an ending that leaves you desperate for more, Kai Butler sticks the landing.

What a moving, funny, and gobsmackingly magnificent book

Rating: 5🌈

What a moving, funny, and gobsmackingly magnificent book A Shattered Silver Crown is! It’s my favorite of four stories to date in Kai Butler’s fantastic San Amaro Investigations , a series that’s gotten more breathtaking in scope with each novel. Butler seems to be envisioning the future of the universe as well as character growth as something so wildly different, so unexpected that with every new case or turn in the story, the reader never knows what emotionally the impact will bring. On the characters and us.

It could be warm-hearted scenes between the growing found family living with Parker Ferro. It could be wildly humorous ones with brownies determined to have their be dazzling way, or heartbreaking ones as Parker deals with the emotional fallout of his past and his identity. All while investigating cases that could shatter worlds.

Butler’s writing here is just superb. The ramifications from the deep draining family issues that have come from the deaths and devastating events from the previous books are a major factor here. Lauren, Parker’s sister, isn’t right. How this is handled is incredible.

Love, whether it’s family or romantic, and it’s complications , especially when the Fae are involved is a enormous element here. Especially because Parker is Fae. The balancing act he has to make between his two lives is becoming more perilous and harder to do.

Butler’s ability to bring us inside Parker’s often anguished emotional state is heartbreaking and painful. We are so committed to him and want him to succeed even as the odds are increasing against him.

The magical scenes of battle are powerful and believable, imaginative and thrilling. You can feel the heat of the flames around the people you care about!

At the end, the case here has been resolved. But the cost has been high. And there’s hints of a high danger on the horizon. As well as one on the doorstep.

There’s another book, The Heart’s Blood Arrow, coming out Nov 7, 2022. It says it’s the 5 and last story in the series. But honestly, I can’t understand how this unbelievably complicated universe and themes can be wrapped up in one book. It seems unlikely.

I’m highly anticipating that book. But until then, this series is amazing. Read it in the order it’s written. They are not standalone books.

I’m highly recommending each and every one, especially A Shattered Silver Crown (San Amaro Investigations #4) by Kai Butler .

This review is for Books 1-4 which I read over a 2.5 day period. Overall, I'd rate all the books in the 3.5-4.0 range. I like the world building, the unique characters, and the paranormal aspects of the book. My only quibble is that I wish I could see more relationship development between Parker and his partner over the course of the 4 books. My favorite series take us on a journey--they show us the couple in every stage of their relationship and satisfactorily transition readers from that initial moment when both characters meet to HEA. But this book pretty much makes the couple committed by the end of book 1, so any further development of their relationship in Books 2, 3, and 4 feels surface-level at best. It's not bad per say, but it does take some of the tension out of the storytelling.

Still, this is a solid read--the fact that I read all four books in 2.5 days is proof of that. I look forward to Book 5 coming out in November and am glad that this book was recommended to me.

So this time around we have we have someone from Parker's past shows up that no one was expecting. I was so worried about Laurel & I'm happy with how that was handled. These stories keep you hooked from beginning to end & keep you wanting for more. I don't want to spoil it, so get out there & pick this one up ASAP. I still want a not-a-cat, love Runt.
