A Catholic Biblical Theology of the Sacraments

The Bible and the Priesthood: Priestly Participation in the One Sacrifice for Sins

Rate this book
This series on the seven Sacraments provides readers with a deeper appreciation of God's gifts and call in the Sacraments through a renewed encounter with God's Word.

In this volume, a leading Catholic scholar offers a biblical theology of the priesthood rooted in the Old and New Testaments. Half a millennium after the Protestant Reformation and in the midst of an ongoing clerical crisis in the Catholic Church, this book presents a comprehensive biblical vision and defense of the sacramental priesthood and an informed theological response to the problem of priestly sin. It gives expression to the ministerial priesthood's biblically grounded, sacramental share in the sacrificial ministry of Jesus Christ.

Series editors are Timothy C. Gray and John Sehorn. Gray is president of the Augustine Institute, which has one million subscribers to its online content channel, Formed. Gray and Sehorn teach at the Augustine Institute Graduate School of Theology, which prepares students for Christian mission through on-campus and distance-education programs.

Incredible work. Giambrone’s magnum opus. My rector called this the best biblical work on the priesthood of Christ, pre and post-conciliar. NB: the structure of the hermeneutical realisation as a framework for implementing Dei Verbum 12 will prove to be a case study for the Analogy of Faith.

I highly recommend this book. It completely deepened my understanding of Second Temple Judaism as well as early Christianity. The part about the Transfiguration and how it would have been understood as an high priest ordination is something I had never considered before. This book will change how you understand the priesthood and scripture. Probably. I don’t know maybe you already knew all this. I didn’t, but now I do. Great read!

Astounding exegesis with very good spiritual takeaways. Far from being a simple apologetics, text-proofing argument for the priesthood, Fr. Giambrone rigorously uses the best of modern Biblical studies techniques, used through the hermeneutic of faith, to show the roots of a hierarchical and participatory priesthood through the lens of Scripture.

Game changer for discussions about the evidence for the Catholic priesthood as we know it in the New Testament and established by Christ . This is a truly excellent work. I am not convinced the JEPD framework adopted here when looking at the OT but I also didn’t think it was critical to his argument which holds despite rather than because of that framework

Excellently tough. Probably needed some more time to prove, considering he wrote it all in 2 months, but an absolute gold mine of scriptural connections and interpretations on the priesthood. What it is wanting in clarity it makes up for in breadth and acuity of insight.
