Lale Westvind’s Grip (2020) is for me the comics event of the year (2022), so far, though it was published in 2020. It came to me via a circuitous route. The copy I have was lent to me by Mia, who has written about a shared interest, poetry comics, and who ordered it from Spain’s Apa Apa Press, that publishes other experimental work by Ana Galvan, Matt Furie, Roberto Masso, and Yuichi Yokoyama, among others (those are just the folks I know from the press so far).

Goodreads reviewer and friend Kim, who also writes in a scholarly way about alternative, indie, and experimental comics of all kinds, made a Top Ten Comics Artists of the Decade list I only saw recently (oh, I love such lists), and she included Westvind, of whom I had never heard, in her top ten! Then I watched a review of her work on comics guru Robert Boyd’s Book Report (link below) who talks about how he heard of it from the comics podcast, Comics Burning in Hell. So when Mia texted me she owned the book, I urged her to drop it off.

It doesn’t work this way with Jane Austen, folks. You want the book, boom. But the secret cult of alt-comix I belong to (involving blood oaths, pinky swears, secret decoder rings you get in cereal boxes) has this outsider geek aspect to it.

Oh, and, the book, you ask? Gorgeous production, by Apa Apa, with bright and almost garish coloring Boyd tells me is an attempt to mimic the original lithograph process of the work. Wordless, it’s a kind of magical Rosie the Riveter feminist story involving a woman who heads down an alley and acquires magic hand powers, and possibly superhuman strength--a grip, which you see for the first time in the last image as two hands grip each other in feminist, working-class solidarity.

When I say the graphic novel is wordless, I mean no words, so of course you read the images to get what story exists, though most of the effects have less to do with narrative than poetry. The color is almost psychedelic, and the panels teem with swirling transformational motion. It almost feels like music, with vibrant, pulsing rhythms.

The woman has to learn how to channel and control her power, and it’s a process to get there. Messes are made, distortion happens, but ultimately things come together. If I had to say what it is “about” metaphorically I guess I would say it is about harnessing life energy, about achieving and controlling your powers. It’s muscular. The woman is muscular, no skinny Vogue model but a worker. And our hero is not the only woman worker. Wherever you go there are women working hard, serving food, cooking, flying planes, driving a motorcycle, building shelters. It’s not a shy and retiring set of images. It’s about work, getting things done. Muscle and machines. Hands everywhere, the tools for work.

Grip is about strength and vibrant beauty, not so much about quiet, muted contemplation. It’s about physical and spiritual and psychic/magical changes, and power. “I am woman, hear me roar”? You almost can hear it. I only read the interview with her now, after writing my review, but she says she writes women in her comics she would have liked to see growing up, or would like to become. She speaks of friends/influences such as Anya Davidson, Conor Stechshulte, Margot Ferrick. Westvind grew up in NYC with Turkish and Swedish parents, and got her BFA at Chicago's Art Institute.

An essay by Gerardo Vilches in the afterwords connects her work to other, what he calls “cosmic primitives,” folks like Jesse Moynihan. I thought of Ron Rege and his Wonder Woman origin comic, which might also draw on and reflect cosmic energy. Cool stuff. Exciting.

Thanks, Maria! I'm getting my own copy, and more from her at Quimby's (one of my local comic book stores).

I usually don't write any reviews or commentaries here on GR but I think that this book and her author definitively deserve more attention than they have received up to now. This is the most exciting and acrobatic celebration of (female) manual labor I've ever seen in comics. 128 pages of jaw-dropping, hyper-dynamic matter manipulations by endless tangles of hands and fingers, stellar fluo colors and no dialogue. Give Lale Westvind and Perfectly Acceptable Press all the money you have.

Lale Westvind'in Grip isimli çizgi romanı okuduğum en ilginç çizgi romanlardan biriydi diyebilirim.

My review of 'Grip' published on Solrad,

"Wonder and awe permeate the experience of reading Lale Westvind’s Grip. Better yet, it manages these states while also rejecting the juvenile and fascistic elements of [male] adolescent power fantasies found in mainstream superhero comics, mine and many’s entry point into comics. Grip provides a distinctly feminist power fantasy that centers its main character’s development of her superhuman abilities as a craft utilized towards greater autonomy, inner peace, and collaboration. In doing so, Westvind celebrates the lives of craftspeople and blue-collar workers, showing the vitality of the lives devoted to making and serving, and the opportunities fostered through access to that embodied knowledge..."

Below is my review of my second reading on August 2, 2020.
I’ve been looking forward to reading Grip since the original first volume was released in a limited run in 2018. I really appreciate that perfectly acceptable created this collected edition, their first offset printed book, to make Lale Westvind’s comics about women’s labor more accesible. Plot-wise, it’s all pretty straightforward. A supernatural force imbues the main character with the ability to bend, stretch, and extend anything she touches and she then uses that power to live a life previously inaccesible to her. this is a stunning work that repeatedly enthralls in its nameless character’s manipulation of the material world. I loved the energy of this book, westvind succeeds at rendering deconstructions of various items as the character shapes them into food, shelter and all else she needs. And while there’s a huge show of physical force on the scale of more typical superheroes, it never feels like the power is being used to subjugate or terrorize. Instead, this character is a maker and a dweller who uses her ability to live autonomously while developing relationships with other women that she mutually admires. Definitely recommend everyone get this while they can. Even in this more available edition, the print run is limited to 3000, so get it while you can. It needs to be seen.

At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, I really do think this was one of the most visually astounding pieces of art I have ever experienced, in any medium. A truly unparalleled accomplishment of visual storytelling that pushes the boundaries of experimentation by challenging, deconstructing, and recontextualising the very ideas of form and movement on every single page, while still maintaining an incredibly strong (not to mention downright inspiring!) narrative cohesion. Grip appears both as some sort of futuristic physiology textbook of the gods, and a genuine love letter to the act of doing, making, and most importantly CREATING!

Today's book report is about Grip by Lale Westvind. I found out about this book from the podcast Comic Books Are Burning in Hell, where they ranked the then unfinished work as one of the 10 best comics of 2020.

(Addendum: Someone told me that Lale's name is pronounced La-Ley Westvind responded "...my name is pronounced Lah-leh.")

Yowza, what a trip. The wordless story reminded me of the best kind of LSD experience. I’m sure the artist had other things to say, but I’ll coast on the pretty surface for now and dip down deeper when I return. And I will return!

This comic, Grip by Lale Westvind, looks absolutely great, with wild, fluid cartooning and gloriously fluorescent colours. Unfortunately, beyond liking its aesthetic, I don't really get it. My main take-away from reading it has been an increased appreciation for the skill of Jim Woodring, whose Frank comics are (like Grip) textless and psychedelic and driven by an unfathomable internal logic, but (unlike Grip) miraculously manage never to leave me feeling lost or indifferent.

Grip has a frenetic energy, with almost non-stop movement and pages bursting with details and colours. This is exciting – and integral to why it's so visually impressive – but it's also exhausting, especially as lots of the panels are quite similar to one another. Moreover, as I struggled to comprehend the plot, my exhaustion evolved into frustration and ultimately disinterest. That said, eventually I gave up trying to understand what was going on and I just let myself enjoy the pictures. This is probably the best approach, as this artwork really is wonderful.

Lale Westvind's Grip is a masterclass of wordless storytelling. A woman gains (or rather discovers within herself) an immense ability to work with her hands and basically re-arrange matter if she so chooses to. As she learns to harness her ability, we witness her empowerment and ascension into something more. The story is rendered in gorgeous Risograph that creates some vibrantly colored sequences. It's a beautiful comic with a simple, endearing story.

An illustration masterpiece! I love the subtle hints of self-discovery and whimsical sense of color. The fluid proportions of size and riso overlay made for a vivid play of story that really did no words to understand. My only issue was the excessive use of my hands. I understand the title is Grip but felt that 3 pages of hand-twirling air were a little much. Would have liked to explore the character of the child or how her life was before the hand transformation?

Overall this was a Christmas gift I chose for myself. I will enjoy putting it on myself to admire and visit now and again! Possibly even lend it to my niece!

Exhilarating from start to finish. I read in one sitting. Several years ago I tried to get this from ILL but they sent me volume two of the original risograph zines instead. Which looked amazing! I had no idea what was going on though. Seeing both together for the full ride was worth the wait, and the publisher did an amazing job reproducing the original riso colors.
