In the early 1940s, during World War II, Germany's Nazi regime expanded into neighboring European countries. In France, groups of anti-Nazi citizens, known as the French Resistance, fought to stop Germany's reign of terror. A brave woman named Nancy Wake became one of the movement's greatest assets as a spy. In her role, Wake often transported Jews to safe locations and rode her bicycle through German checkpoints to deliver messages and supplies. For her ability to avoid capture, the enemy nicknamed her the "White Mouse." In this full-color graphic novel, discover more about this fearless woman who faced the enemies of World War II.
This was the only book about Nancy Wake that my library system had, so I decided to request it once I found out it's part of a series of graphic novels called "Women Warriors of World War II". I'm always up for some women herstory, so I requested all of them in my county system! Then I ordered a grown-up bio of Nancy from a second-hand bookseller. ;) This graphic novel is a great way to introduce younger readers to historical events & people. I know some readers have a hard time imagining the past, so having some representation of the places & the context could help young readers become more involved with the story. And Nancy is a great place to start!
Story of Nancy Wake who was a journalist and she became a courier for the French Resistance during WWII. Famous for a 310 mile bike ride in 72 hours to radio London to request a radio and new passcodes for the Resistance. A fairly straight forward biography that might appeal to 8-12 year-olds who like biographies and history that might lead to reading a more in depth biography of this little known but important WWII hero.
I'd never heard of this woman but apparently there are several books about her. This is a children's graphic novel that's just an introduction to her story, really. I may need to read a full-on book next. This is one of a series of books about female heroes from World War II.
