I wanted to love this book. I really did. Like the author, I am an English teacher. I was looking for a book that I could either read with my seniors or at least recommend. This is not that book. There is cussing for the sake of cussing or to sound cool. It doesn’t sound cool. It sounds like she is trying too hard. She doesn’t really give any advice that is life changing or different from what I have read or seen elsewhere. She also seems to jump around, unable to decide on an audience, sometimes she is talking to parents, sometimes teachers, and sometimes students. I was also very frustrated by her introduction where she is quite insulting to parents. She also seems to think everyone drinks or parties in school, and I certainly did not. I could go on and on but I won’t. It was an easy read but I was not motivated, inspired, or filled with any sort of profound knowledge.
Beyond The Bell by Melissa Pyrch is a book that all seniors and their parents will want to read. This book is also applicable to the college student. As a community college adjunct instructor of English and writing, University Writing Center Assistant, and mother to a young adult and a high school senior, I find this book to be a vital piece of literature in the library of every student. Mrs. Pyrch talks to students as a teacher and a mentor. She shares multiple life lessons and experiences that every young person will undoubtedly encounter in an honest, open, enlightening, and caring manner. Mrs. Pyrch is a high school English teacher and she knows how to talk with seniors. She uses personal stories and past life events as a student herself and as a teacher to talk to seniors about the topics that matter most. Every student is fearful of the pathway that lies ahead after graduation from high school, but this fact is rarely addressed during the senior year. There are many unknowns for students after graduation. They must walk bravely into their future often with little knowledge of what lies ahead. As an educator, mother, and an advocate for high school and college students, I have not found another book that addresses these crucial topics with the detail, heart, and life that Mrs. Pyrch delivers in this unique publication. I would love to place this book in the hands of every teenager and young adult. This book is a treasure. I highly recommend this read for all high school and college students, parents, and educators. Thank you, Mrs. Pyrch!
HB “Beyond the Bell” is a 12-chapter book where each chapter is a new lesson on how to figure out what kind of person you graduate from high school. The author Melissa Pyrch, has been teaching high school English in New York for over two decades. The amazing part about this book that I found was the way two people may view it, for me personally I really understood her experiences, not knowing what career she wanted. This is because personally I have no idea either, or most kids don’t. Due to the fact that I’m a high school senior this book may be different for me than it would be for some of my classmates.
This book is a great read for those who are trying to figure out who they are and what they want in life. The author is honest and truthful about her and her students experiances and speaks in a way that most young adults can connect with. Her tone is for her for target audience which is high school students and college kids, which is what makes the book relatable. I would recommend this book to any kid who is not 100% sure what lies ahead of them in adulthood which is 99% of ever kid I’ve ever met.
My two favorite quotes from this book are “its easy to feel sorry for yourself when life kicks you in the ass.”(pg 196) and “some of the details of these backstories are the most beautiful parts of who we become and how we grow in new relationships. And some details suck.” (pg, 170)
I’m a recent high school graduate, and I’ve never cried while reading a book before. During high school, I thought I had everything figured out. I just finished my first semester of college, and I was hit hard with the reality that I’m sailing in an open ocean. I’m not saying this book solves all our problems — in fact, Mrs. Pyrch goes on to say that nothing can but us — but it opened up everything I had inside. Her objectives are clear, and her stories are honest and raw. And, for that reason, I feel that no matter who you are ‘Beyond the Bell’ offers you valuable lessons for life.
I think now I’m more aware that I’m afraid. I’m afraid that the future I live out may not be what I imagine. I’m afraid that I can’t really imagine anything solid. I can’t see my life after college let alone picture my next semester. I’m crying again now, typing this up, because Mrs. Pyrch says that that’s okay. That we can embrace that fear and know that our dreams shift and change and evolve, and as long as we keep staying true to ourselves and working hard and maintaining the valuable lifelong connections we hold near and dear to our hearts, we will find the happiness that’s meant for us. And that happiness isn’t ‘happily ever after’— it’s a happiness that continues and grows as we continue to reach our goals.
As my oldest son is preparing to graduate high school in less than 6-weeks, I thought that I would encourage him to read this book. While I'm waiting for him to read it (it's on his TBR!), I decided to take a look at it myself, and I only wish that I'd had this as I was venturing out into the world as a teenager.
As a high school teacher, this author gives insight and advice on high school and beyond, using experiences from her real life and from those of some of her students. There are passages here that had me chuckling, had me tearing up, and had me remembering my own days of high school and those early days after graduation. It had me reminiscing on my first love and past relationships, and let me tell you, I could have used some of these words of wisdom back in the day.
If you're the parent of a high school student, especially one that is due to graduate this year, I highly recommend picking up this book for them (and for you too).
This book is a good read for people who aren't sure what they want their future to look like, and hear someone elses story. The author is motivating, because Pyrch uses her real life examples and talks about the outcome and proves it is possible to find who you are. I would recommend this book because for someone like me going into college I know I will face challenges where I feel lost and remember what this book thought me. This book wasn't too long but got tot the point and was really clear
Having Melissa’s advice in one book is such a blessing. Her way with words and willingness to tell her personal, true stories allows you to see how these lessons come up in life. This is a must read for high school and college students!!
Bought two books for my twin almost 16-year-olds! They love it! It’s such a great resource for them! They are so nervous about going to college and this is such great insight for them. Helps put things at ease! Thank you so much for helping!
Do you have a high school senior or junior planning on attending college? If you do, check out BEYOND THE BELL: 12 Lessons for Navigating Your Life After High School by Melissa Pyrch. It’s a #poppinspicks book. While heading to college is exciting, it can also be a bit overwhelming, and because of that, we tend to focus on things like the SATs and College App. But there’s more to this journey, and Mrs. Pyrch draws on her lengthy time as a high school English teacher, stories from her students, and even her own experiences to assure the college-bound that it’s all part of the plan.
