Perfect for fans of Elise Kova's A Deal with the Elf King and Tricia Levenseller's The Shadows Between Us, Angels of Ashes and Ivory is a standalone romantic fantasy featuring dual povs with a patient hero, resolved to win his Beloved's heart, and a determined heroine set on revenge. Filled with plot twists, slow build romance, and the age-old battle of good vs bad, this coming of age novel is set in a fantasy world on the brink of apocalypse.
*Due to thematic elements of human trafficking and abuse, Angels of Ashes and Ivory may not be suitable for readers under 15.
RAYE WAGNER is the USA Today Bestselling author of young adult fantasy books, but she hates writing bios. She’d much rather tell you a story. She’s partial to fantasy, with dragons or magic or something so she can lie and not feel guilty. She also has an obsession with sweets (all the bakery goodies), nerf wars, wigs, and occasionally tutus.
When she isn’t writing, shenanigating (I’m sure that’s a word), or lying, Raye is with her family . . . preferably at the beach.

i will almost always choose a standalone book over a series. so imagine my surprise when i kept thinking that this story could have actually benefited from being a series instead.
i really enjoyed this (even if i hate the cover) and think the heart of the story is a good one, but it just felt a bit unbalanced just because of how much material there really is. had this been spread over a duology, i think some of that lopsidedness might have been evened out.
but this is packed full of action, angel and demon mythology, and romance. so theres more than enough content here for anyone looking for an entertaining paranormal story.
Dark YA, stand alone, high fantasy novel. Stabby with romance and definitely on the mature-side, but the author stays on the young adult side of the fence. Raye Wagner's high emotion, fast paced novel, with intricate plotting and magic is on full display. This is her first solo novel in almost three years. It reminds us that she's a master of rich world-building and a queen of tugging at reader emotions.
This book was absolutely just too much. What was even the plot? There was one and then another and then a sub - plot and then a drama and then who knows.
Whilst the trauma Sanna experienced was true and valid, she didn’t act like someone behaving with trauma but rather a brat. She was so rude to Rynk over and over again. It wasn’t the trusting or the sexual side, it was her screaming at him when she didn’t understand something?
Sorry? Is she a child?
Clearly.
Clearly she is.
I just couldn’t engage with this book at all, I forced myself to read it as I don’t want another DNF, but it was hard. I literally skipped pages at a time.
Thank you so much to Raye Wagner for providing me with an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I feel like I've waited an eternity to read another one of Raye Wagner's books again! This was a wonderful return to the incredible worlds that she creates and I didn't realize just how much I had missed reading her work until I started reading this book. I knew as soon as I picked it up that I would fall for everything that this book had to offer and I was absolutely correct.
Plot: Sanaa, an orphan living in V District in Midri, wants only one thing: freedom. Rynk, a blind angel that fought his way to the top of the angel hierarchy, wants nothing more than to find his fated mate. During a mission from the Angelic council to retrieve a Celestial artifact, Rynk stumbles upon a dying Sanaa and with just one touch, he discovers that she is the one he has been looking for. But Sanaa has no desire to be anyone's Beloved, especially not after being sold to an abusive merchant. Sanaa has lost the ability to trust anyone, men most of all, and all she wants is revenge against those who have wronged her. Can this unlikely pair learn to trust and work together before Sanaa’s world is destroyed? I had so much fun with this story! At 478 pages it certainly wasn’t anything to sneeze at. This was a book that I took my time with in a sense, despite devouring it every time I picked it up. I wanted to really lose myself in the world and the story and it was so easy to do that with such an engaging plot! I wanted to know everything about the demons and angels and Lilith and betrayal and love and all of the things that were packed into the story. I was worried I would be overwhelmed at times, but it was laid out in a way that gave you information about the world and what was happening slowly so that you could take the time to really digest what was happening. Angel stories can usually be hit or miss for me but this one was a grand slam home run touchdown insert more sportsball phrases here! I loved the lore and how the different angels came to be and I really felt like I was learning as Sanaa was learning. I could honestly read an entire series about this world; I feel like there was so much packed into here that I want more of! Raye Wagner is a master at weaving together a memorable story and this is absolutely unforgettable in every way.
Characters: One thing that you can always be sure of if you're reading a book by Raye Wagner is that her characters will absolutely steal your heart. Sanaa and Rynk are no different! This book is definitely a more character-focused one and I think it really made the reading experience so much better. You really get to spend a lot of time with Sanaa and Rynk and see their relationship develop over time. Insta-love is not something that really interests me anymore as I’ve gotten older so I really appreciated not only getting to know these characters over time but also seeing them get to know each other as the story progressed. Sanaa is incredibly wary of everything at first, especially with the whole Beloved business that she wants nothing to do with. It takes her a long time to truly trust that Rynk doesn’t have ulterior motives because she’s been hurt before, and you can see that in the way that she carries herself and how she acts. You can tell that she wants to trust him and embrace her new life, but she’s so unsure of everything. Watching her come into her own and learn about her powers and where she comes from was such a wonderful journey to go on. I felt like I was growing with her as she started to open herself up more and it was such a great experience to see her transformation from the start of the book to the end!
I think that Raye Wagner handled the topic of Sanaa’s trauma very well in Angels of Ashes and Ivory. She showed that it’s not as simple as waking up one day and everything is suddenly better, but rather it’s a long and difficult journey learning to heal and moving forward with your life. I also genuinely appreciated that there was no “love fixes everything” trope because even though this is a fantasy story, that’s not how it happens. I actually found it quite funny that Rynk really thought that Sanaa finding out she was his Beloved would fix everything and that she would instantly fall in love with him only for him to get rejected throughout most of the book. I love when tropes get turned on their heads like that!
The relationship between Sanaa and Rynk was incredibly refreshing to read. I haven’t read a slow-burn romance in a long time, let alone one where a character had to overcome immense trauma. It was sad seeing all of the ways that Sanaa would basically punish herself because she felt like she didn’t deserve love or basic human (or I guess angel?) kindness due to what she had gone through. Rynk also had an incredible transformation, starting off as a frustrated and seemingly entitled character to actually taking the time to care for Sanaa in the ways that she needed and finally becoming a wonderful partner to the strong woman that Sanaa eventually becomes. The two of them are such amazing characters and I knew that I would adore them as soon as I started reading. I was definitely not disappointed!
Writing: This is Raye Wagner at her finest, hands down. It’s no secret that I’ve loved her books for many years so of course I’m always going to sing her praises, but this really is some of my favorite writing that ive ever read from her. The world building was something else entirely and I really loved the lore of the world and learning all about the different types of angels. You can really tell that this book is written from the heart and I felt it as I was reading. There was just something different about this one that sat with me as I read and long after I finished the final page. "What was a body anyway? Nothing more than a shell for the soul. A body meant nothing as long as her soul was her own. Her soul. Her heart. Her mind. If no one controlled those, then what did it matter who bought her body? It didn’t matter a bit.”
“Things admitted in the dark of night were not always easy to say in the light of day.”
“Before this goes any further, Blue, you need time for your heart and mind and body to be in agreement. What I want will wait for what you need.”
I can always count on Raye Wagner to have quotes sprinkled throughout her books that hit me straight in the heart and this book was no different. I’m convinced that she’s a magical being that somehow always manages to write stories that speak to different parts of my life. I always seem to read her books at a time when I need the messages that they give the most and this time is no different I’ve been struggling to return to my “normal” life and find myself after beating cancer and seeing Sanaa being able to slowly but surely rebuild herself after her trauma has given me hope that, despite how different our traumas are, I can also rebuild myself and start again. It brings me joy to find positive messages like this in the books that I read, so thank you Raye for giving me this gift, however indirectly it may be.
Angels of Ashes and Ivory is an incredible story about learning to love, healing from trauma, and becoming the person you were meant to be. After several years of being absent from writing, Raye Wagner has come back stronger than ever and shown that she is still the queen of fantasy. With an exciting and engaging plot that will keep you turning the pages, characters that will break your heart and mend it back together, and writing that will speak to your soul, Angels of Ashes and Ivory is a powerful story that is sure to stick with you long after you finish reading!
"Within a few short minutes someone would buy her, and there was nothing she could do about it."
I received an eARC from the author and bookofmatchesmedia, however this in no way influenced my review, the thoughts and opinions are completely my own.
Short Review: Sanaa is being sold and Rynk is searching for his Beloved. Sanaa has been betrayed, used and violated one too many times and will not accept that Rynk is her Beloved. But demons lurk around every corner and Sanaa might just have to learn to trust again, if she wants a chance to save her world. Told through dual perspectives this is a fast-paced, deep and imaginative YA fantasy-romance novel, full of swoon-worthy characters and a sweet blossoming romance. Raye Wagner is truly an amazing author that can easily create a beautiful and intricate world while developing deep and complex characters. However, that's not all, Wagner is also able to weave a captivating and fast-paced plot line along side a beautiful and delicate slow-burn romance. With it's amazing cover, interesting concept, swoon-worthy romance and powerful imagery, there is no reason why you shouldn't pick up this book!
Extended Review: I have to admit I usually don't go for standalones because I don't think that the authors can really put all this worldbuilding and deep characters in only one book. But, this book drew me in because of the interesting concept and the amazing cover. And I am so glad that I read it! Despite being a standalone, Raye Wagner was able to tell her story so well, and lace it with such rich and vivid worldbuilding and imagery so that I each scene played out like a movie in my head. I fell in love with this world but also the characters.
Sanaa is an orphan who has been broken, betrayed and violated one too many times. Her character is beautifully written, and so is the way her trauma was portrayed and overcome throughout the book.
Rynk is a second-order angel who was denied his beloved for a long time and after finally finding her, finds out that she rejects their fated bond. I just want to say that I loved Rynk and I wish that he was my beloved. His character was complex and his personality just shined through his characteristics were chosen perfectly and his actions and words were just, again, beautifully written. In my opinion, Rynk could not have been any better.
Even the many side characters were amazingly written! and each played their own important role in the progressing story line. Thane. I loved Thane as well.
The plot was captivating and made me want to read the whole book in one setting, I swear the action may have stopped, but even when it was just talking there was so much going on. And I can't say how much I loved the concept and plot of this book. Oh and the world was just so amazing as well!
Well this was a long review so I might wrap it up here. In the end I do think you should give this book a chance, even if you end up not liking it. I still think that it is an amazing read and no one could ever hate every bit of this book. If not just for the romance, read this book!
I love everything about this book! The action, adventure, world building…it’s fantastic! I could not get enough of Rynk. He was so patient…so understanding. What an amazing read!
The book Angles of Ashes and Ivory by Raye Wagner is just as the name suggests is about Angles and their work on and for mankind and against demons. It contains strong characters with a good plot. The plot of the story is very immaculate and personally, refreshing. The story is about Sanaa who lives in the mortal world, and Rynk who is an angel set upon destroying demons and finding his mate. Yes, it is a fated mates story. It is about their journey and struggles against demons and their own selves to protect the mortal world. The writing is initially a bit chaotic, but as the story progresses feels controlled and wasn't rushed. It is fully action packed but somewhere lacked world-building. The story is from a 3rd person's POV hence I felt a bit narrative. The characters are strong ruled fully by their emotions and past. The ending of the story was beautiful and apt.

*Thoughts*
Raye Wagner's Angels of Ashes and Ivory blends high fantasy and romance against a world on the verge of annihilation. There are elements of violence, enslavement, and murder, making this an extremely dark world. The story features two equally damaged characters: Sanaa, and Rynk. Sanaa grew up in the demon infested world known as Midri. She was abandoned as a baby. She grew up in the one honest orphanages in the entire V district. For the past six years, Amma drilled caution into those under her care for fear they would be caught by poachers, and sold into slavery.
A highly overrated young adult romantic fantasy. One word to describe the main female character called Blue is irritating. Any sympathy I had for her exited quickly. From the synopsis the story has much undeveloped potential and can read as a young adult romance with a few angels and demons thrown in. A secondary character Amma proved more interesting.
I’ve read many young adult books, and this one is no where close to a four **** star rating.
Angels of Ashes and Ivory is an exciting fantasy romance that puts a unique twist on the bonded mates trope.
You’re teleported into a completely new world(s) where angels, demons, and humans exist together. The magic system revolves around angel lore.
Sanaa grew up in a terrible world overrun by demons. Betrayed and sold to a cathouse, she’s forced to witness horror upon horror before being rescued by a beautiful angel…who happens to claim that she’s his bonded mate.
The twist? She completely rejects him and their bond.
Oh yeah, and now she’s an angel.
This book was a difficult one for me to rate accurately.
There were several things I really liked about it and other things that frustrated me. So, I think 3.5 stars is a good compromise.
Having said that, for those of you that look at a 3-star rating and think “Ugh, I’m not going to read that,” let me tell you: Just read it. It’s worth it!
~Plot
AoAaI is a fantasy romance (rather than a romantic fantasy). This storyline focuses primarily on the growing bond between Rynk and Sanaa. The angelic world and cool powers add to this goal.
Props to the author for world-building. AoAaI is definitely a dark fantasy, filled with intriguing angel lore, terrifying demons, derelict and beautiful worlds, and cool celestial treasures. The world caught me right away. It feels like there will be more stories exploring this world.
I enjoyed this twist on bonded mates. That is, how Sanaa rejected the bond and Rynk had to earn her trust. I loved that the author answers that question of whether or not the heroes love each other because they ACTUALLY LOVE each or is it the bond forcing them.
The pacing of the book was great. You’re drawn in from page one and don’t really want to stop until the satisfying end.
~Characters
Rynk was a fantastic hero. He was the definition of a cinnamon roll boyfriend and certainly the highlight of the story for me. His patience with Sanaa, and insistence that he would never touch her without permission, was so heartwarming. I loved that he was determined to be a warrior despite his blindness. Very inspiring! And I loved the flaws he displayed in the beginning as he felt disappointed that he was bonded with her.
I struggled with Sanaa. I liked where she ended up, I loved that we explored a traumatized protagonist, but unfortunately, I never connected with her. I felt like a lot of her actions were overly childish (throwing temper tantrums, hasty decisions, screaming for no reason, being rude to Rynk) as opposed to traumatized. I guess I also didn’t feel like her level of trauma called for her behavior. I would've also liked to connect more with her secret family and powers.
I really enjoyed some of the supporting characters. I loved Thane and Amma. The Prince was diabolical (though for some reason I could never understand what he was exactly? Demon? Half-demon? Human possessed by a demon?)
~Writing
Raye Wagner paints a beautiful world with visceral emotions and vivid vibes. I could see the sunsets and feel her characters’ angst. Fantastic writing skills.
Other times, I was really confused. Particularly in the beginning and during action sequences. I was also taken out of the story during the flashbacks and viewpoint changes.
~Content
This is a dark fantasy. Apocalyptic worlds with torture, slavery, discussion of r**pe and torture. You’ll also see women and children die.
Mild swearing.
There’s a love scene that I would’ve liked to fade to black sooner but I understand that there were some major plot points that made it necessary. Having said that, there was nothing explicit about the scene.
All this taken into account, I’d rate AoAaI as Upper YA to NA.
~Would I Recommend?
Yeah! I’d die on a hill for Rynk. He’s the hero you’ve been waiting for! Sanaa’s powers are pretty cool and I think this is a world you don’t want to miss.
Thank you to Book of Matches Media and the author for letting me read this book! This review is completely voluntary and the opinions are my own.
This is the first of Raye’s books that I’ve read, and it certainly won’t be the last. I’ve always loved fantasy books featuring angels, but they’re increasingly rare, so I was delighted to get my hands on a copy of Angels of Ashes and Ivory.
So, what’s it about? Orphan Sanaa has always been different with her naturally blue hair and kind heart. When an unfortunate incident results in her capture by poachers, she’s sold at auction to a cruel slave master who runs a notorious brothel.
Rynk, a powerful warrior angel has spent years seeking redemption for a mistake he made as a child, in order to be granted his Beloved soul mate. When he’s sent down to the demon invested Midri to retrieve a celestial object, he encounters Sanaa at death’s door and knows instantly that she’s his Beloved. With the demons closing in, Rynk and Sanaa must put their pasts behind them and work together to save humanity from destruction.
I loved everything about this book! The world building was beautiful and easy to follow, and the author painted a vivid and contrasting picture of life in the hopeless, dangerous, and depressing slums of Midri against the peaceful, light and beautiful angel realm of Terra.
The character development was first class. I adored Rynk. He was strong, protective and extremely patient with Sanaa, giving her the space she needed to heal from her traumatic past. Sanaa did annoy me at the start of the book when she acted petulant and rude when she arrived at Terra, but once she started to trust others, follow her heart and embrace her powers, she matured into a brave, strong and likeable heroine. Rynk and Sanaa had an achingly sweet slow-burn romance, with the perfect amount of angst to keep me up reading too late. They were great for each other; Sanaa made Rynk work on his patience and be more emotionally available and Rynk helped Sanaa to trust in others as he always had her back with no expectations. The secondary characters in the book were well developed too (Thane and Amma were my favourites) and although I know this is a standalone novel, I really hope we’ll hear more about the lovely Thane in the future.
I don’t usually read stand alone fantasy novels, but it was a refreshing change to have the story beautifully wrapped up at the end without the inevitable series cliff-hanger.
Angels of Ashes and Ivory is a fantasy masterpiece, filled with epic fight scenes, lush scenery, swoon worthy romance and the age-old battles between good and evil, triumph and adversity. Fantasy readers need this on their TBR.

This is a really good fantasy stand-alone romance that I am sad is not a series because I didn’t want to leave this world or these characters.
The world building in this is done well, like chef kiss level. There are Angels, Demons and Humans that exist in the different worlds and the blend of Angel lore and mythology woven into the story gives it a unique but easily accepted world. I would advise to read the appendix of angels found at the back of the book first. I only found it at the end and after reading it, it clears up a lot of the confusion about the ranks and Angel lore that can be difficult to understand.
The book felt like it doesn’t have too much plot (the main plot can actually easily be summed up in a few sentences) but don’t go reading this book for the plot - read it for the character development because that is fantastic!
There are serious heavy topics touched on in this book. Slavery, abuse, rape and sexual assault and Sanaa has been exposed to all of these growing up in the demon infested Midri. If any of these are triggers I would stay away from reading this as a large part is Sanaa dealing with her trauma and learning how to trust again.
Rynk is just goals! He is what I want in a man and more! He is kind and patient with Sanaa and although can be grumpy you can’t help but root for him to succeed, like him immeasurably and keep yelling internally for Sanaa to finally accept her bond.
Overall a good book! I was invested for the ride and would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes Fantasy and Romance.
Angels and demons, intense world-building, heartwarming characters, and a romance to die for! What more do I ask for!?
I cannot stress how much I loved this book! The plot, the world, the characters - they were all just amazing. This might just be the one to beat.
Sanaa wants freedom - something her life will never permit. She is caught by poachers and gets auctioned off to the vilest man in the district.
Sanaa glanced down and tugged against the rough rope binding her wrists. The threads scratched her skin, but her attempts to loosen the binding were useless. Even if she could cut the rope, there was no escape from her future.
When all seems bleak, enter Rynk! Rynk is an angel who's battled his way to the top of the angel hierarchy whose one goal is to find his fated mate. He finally finds her but unfortunately for him, it's not a good situation.
Sanaa, having been deceived by everyone she's trusted till now, refuses to trust Rynk and rejects the bond. But the bond keeps her grounded (unconsciously), and now Rynk has to prove to her that he is trustworthy.
"Are you ever afraid?” “Far more often than I’d like to admit... And increasingly more so since meeting you."
The book is in multiple POVs. We get to see the story unfold from different perspectives which was refreshing. Rynk is an absolute sweetheart and is so adorable. His POV was one of my favorites from the book since it was so much fun.
Sanaa was definitely irritating with her hostility towards everything around her (and Yes, it included Rynk too!). Her trauma defined her actions and she needed help and time to recover. But she was very irritating... till the end.
The plot was fascinating and the details were intriguing. There was a lot going on but the author connected them all pretty well. It did feel like certain circumstances got glossed over by the end though.
I enjoyed this book so much and I can't thank the author and BOMM enough for sending me the ARC for this amazing read!
The Book Dragon was giving the privilege of reading Angels of Ashes & Ivory by Author Raye Wagner, prior to its release on Thursday 17th February 2022. And on behalf of the Book Dragon Team I would like to personally thank Raye for the complete and utter pleasure given, by allowing me to read her latest work.
It is always such a complete joy to find an author whose standard of writing is so very high that it can sweep you away into the world they have created in an instant, and have you riding waves of different emotions, establishing a true connection to the characters they have created, and what's more falling in love with them. Rynk and Sanaa are easy to relate to, their feelings, desires, the way in which they embrace their strengths, and accept each other's flaws, is so genuine and so believable. The reader doesn't have to work hard at all to visualise them, to feel their emotions regardless of the fact their story is taking place in a fictional realm where Angels and Demons exist.
Raye continues to apply the same wonderful characterisation to her additional supporting characters that you almost wish you could go on to read their individual stories and learn more about them. But...even as you sadly reach the final pages of Rynk and Sanaa's story, there is a hint that this is most definitely not the end, and so a glimmer of hope of more that is to come. Good News to Readers if you love this story as much as I did!
Angels of Ashes & Ivory is beautifully written and brings a reader everything they could possibly desire in a book. There is love, passion, danger, drama, conflict, friendship, death, victory, mystery....wrapped in one story! Angels and Demons, Soul Mate Connections, Death and Rebirth, A Test of Trust, Strength, Courage, Faith and Belief. Nothing in the telling of this story disappoints and I easily award this book 5 Stars.
💀Angels sharpening their blades. A mortal world plagued by demons. And one young woman is torn between them.💀
Angels of Ashes & Ivory was the first angels vs demons book that I've read in years, and it did not disappoint! Unlike other books, this really is a battle of good vs evil. It was a breath of fresh air; there is absolutely no doubt who the bad guys are.
The world-building was complex, but not overly so. I wish the chart explaining the hierarchy of the angels was that the beginning of the books verses the end (I 100% did not see it until I was done 😅). I struggled a bit at first because of this, but it is easier to pick up on once you get further in the book.
The whole story takes place over a few days, if not a week at most. I feel like we spent an adequate time both on Midri and Teros. I did feel like the ending was a bit rushed, and I almost wished it would have been two books. I just want more of this world 🤣
I appreciate the emphasis on trust and consent between Sanaa and Rynk in throughout their relationship. Sanaa had just been through a traumatic experience, and was wary of accepting support from a man she just met...especially one who declared he was her Beloved (fated match) at first glance. Even though there was miscommunication between the two - they were always quick to rectify misunderstandings, and came out stronger in the end.
I, as always, am a sucker for the found family trope - and I loved the friends surrounding Sanaa and Rynk. Thane and Amara, in particular! Thane just made me smile with his knowing quips, and Amara just gave off the feeling of belonging and home. I would love a spin off of these siblings and their antics in the future!
This book was a quick and easy read! I would recommend it to anyone that likes darker fantasy, good vs evil, and the fated match trope!
I received an eARC of the book in exchange of an honest review.
My Rating: 3.25/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Angels of Ashes & Ivory an upper YA Epic fantasy book with the classic Angels v/s Demons - Good v/s Bad trope. I commend Raye for exploring some of the darkest things that humans are capable of doing. It’s mirrors a lot of what is happening in our world today. The actions of the corrupt can make us loose faith in the existence of humanity. Sanaa our protagonist is in this dark place were she feels hopeless and is deeply scarred by a traumatic childhood. Her healing journey was interesting to read but the one step forward three steps back got frustrating at times.
The periodic switch to POVs of random characters was jarring and confusing for me. In my opinion, the back stories of the characters could have been flushed out more in the sense that I wish the author had “showed” it to us more rather than just “telling” us through dialogue. The world building was quite complex for a standalone novel and I constantly felt like I was missing something. I think this book would have worked better as a duology.
That being said I really appreciate the way consent was highlighted in this book. It’s really essential to give people the space to heal and listen and communicate effectively and I loved how these themes were explored throughout Sanna and Rynk’s relationship. This book is worth a shot if you like books that explore dark themes with a sprinkle of romance.
"Evil doesn't show its face until the doors are closed and locked. Evil waits until the person or thing they want is trapped."
For fantasy readers who love angels and demons with bonded fate mates trope then you'll have to check this one out!
The plot is really interesting, told in multiple POVs which is a great choice to gain insight to different characters. The world building is fascinating with different hierarchy of angels fighting with the queen of demons, Lilith that corrupt mankind.
The characters are likeable, both main and secondary characters like Thane and Amma. Sanaa, the FMC is a mortal who went through a lot of things, being abused, sold and betrayed by her best friend would definitely make her have trust issues. Then she met Rynk, a Power angel who has been looking for his fated love only to found she's not in the best situation. But, he's trying to care for her and help her to embrace her new future.
Like I said before it has a fascinating world building, but it wasn't explored too much. I also wish there's more background story about the villain but the epic battle at the end is really great.
Overall, this is a pretty good standalone. It was slightly too rushed being things has to resolved by the end of the book, but I love Sanaa's journey in this story. Will be looking forward to read more from this author.
Sanaa is an orphan in Midri, a place riddled with evil. All she wants is to earn her freedom outside of V district. Unfortunately, luck is not on her side when an acquaintance she once considered a close friend sells her out and Sanaa finds herself on the action block being sold to the highest bidder.
Amongst the Angels Rynk has earned his way up the ranks of the Power hierarchy. When he was a small child he was betrayed by his uncle and he has been attempting to make amends ever since. The Council has requested that Rynk retrieve the celestial token, an item he was responsible for losing. In his search he discovers that Sanaa is his long awaited Beloved. Because of Sanaa's stormy past she finds it difficult to accept Rynk. They must learn to work together to overcome the evil that is engulfing Midri.
I am generally not a fan of books with angels but for certain authors I will read anything. Wagner did not disappoint. This story was edge of your seat, action packed, hold your breath because you are now in for the ride of your life. It appears to be a stand alone. I am a little bit happy for that because I don't think my heart could take more of the insanely intense drama. I am a little bit sad that I won't be reading more about these wonderful characters. All in all I am happy for their happily ever after.

I didn't 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 this book, I loved it! It's not often that I've come across a standalone dark fantasy book that's as amazing as any series... a fast paced page turner... filled with drama and action...
The world building was vivid and intense. Sanaa was resilient, the way she coped with her trauma! Rynk was so adorable... and theirs was a slow burn romance that has you rooting for them...
The book was an emotional read. Told through the POVs of Sanaa and Rynk, it explores some important concepts like healing, consent, and earning trust.
Sanaa is one of those characters who go from one fire to the next throughout her life, and it seems like some of them are brought on by her own doing. However, she's young, so it's expected of her immaturity. However, she also meets with deception, betrayal, abuse, and dangers even she never thought she'd face. Of course, she is also confronted by a secret that takes her on an unexpected adventure, one that keeps her on the precipice of life and death - but not just hers.
It was so refreshing to be able to read a standalone for a change, and this one was brilliantly written. Sanaa and Rynk are opposites in so many ways, and I think it has to do with her strength, cunning, and independent streak. I loved that the harder she fought their bond, the more she found herself bouncing into his orbit. It was exciting from the moment it begins and we find out how she ended up on the sale block through the nonstop action that brings us to an amazing ending. I absolutely loved it and expected nothing less. I look forward to finding out where she takes us next.
I want to start by saying Angels of Ashes and Ivory has a gorgeous cover and it immediately drew me in along with the blurb. Angels of Ashes and Ivory is a fantastic standalone and I absolutely enjoyed reading it.
The author, Raye Wagner, is an amazing storyteller and the book flowed so smoothly. I was hooked from the first page. The details, world-building, and imagery was wonderful and it was easy to visualize this book in my mind as I read it.
This fast-paced, dark young adult fantasy romance is told from dual perspectives and features to equally damaged characters. I loved the twist on the bonded/fated mates trope where the h rejects him and not the other way around. I’m not sure if I’ve read many books with that take on the trope, but I loved it.
Wagner took me on an emotional roller coaster and I was invested in these characters’ fates! I was on the edge of my seat while reading and the ending was fabulous!
This is my first Raye Wagner book, but it definitely won't be my last! I love angels vs demons, good vs evil plotlines. The book provides all the right emotions, taking me from laughter to tears and everything in betweeen. Wonderfully written character development and growth along with detailed world building.
What's most important - own desires and pride or well-being of beloved? Soul...Heart...Mind...
"You can't forcefully save anyone. No one can make someone else be good." "You need to open yourself to those things that bring light to your soul." "No one could run from the truth forever." "...but together, they could help each other overcome difficulties, lend support to each other, share in one another's joy...and pleasure."
This book was so wonderful! Sanaa starts as a deeply damaged character; after the life she's had in a demon ridden world as an orphan, how could she not be? Despite her damage, she's still good; she just has a lot of overcome. Rynk is wonderful, positively swoony; he's got just a little to work through himself, but not nearly as much to overcome as our heroine. This book is very much about redemption and second chances all around and, of course, the struggle for good to triumph over evil. It's definitely a slow burn on the romance but worth every moment of the angst! Also, I love the lore that's been created here so much; it was so different from any angel and demon story I've ever read before! I went in happy to have a stand-alone fantasy romance to read and came out wishing there was going to be a whole series in this world!
I really enjoyed this book. One of my favorite tropes is fated mates, and then one of the characters tries to reject the bond. This book is high on the angst and romance. Sanaa and Rynk are an awesome couple and characters together. Sanaa is really cool and pretty scary. I like how even though she is gifted, she has to struggle. She has trauma, but emotionally is extremely strong.
Rynk is so sweet. I loved how he was there for Sanaa but was great in his own way. While he is an awesome warrior, he is so emotionally strong and really kind.
The world building is one of my favorite parts. I enjoyed the angels and the title of super unique. Ivory in the book is cool. I never thought that ivory would ever make it into paranormal, but it did. I highly recommend this book.
“Angels of Ashes and Ivory” is an amazing book by author, Raye Wagner. From the first chapter to the exploding, incredible ending, I was fully invested with the characters and their stories. Raye created this amazing Angel and demon world that enthralled me. The development of the characters, the worlds, the story is excellent. I enjoyed the different point of views you read so you understand where all the characters are coming from. I feel it really builds up the story and gives me more insight. There is darkness that may be hard for some readers, but I felt it was the perfect amount for me to truly understand the story of forgiveness, redemption, and justice that Raye was portraying in her story. I highly recommend this book!! Don’t miss this incredible read.
I absolutely LOVE the world building!! It is so vivid and easy to envision. I absolutely loved getting lost in this world. Angels of Ashes and Ivory is a dark, YA fantasy romance.
