Three bodies, one suspect. That suspect is you…
When the unidentified corpse of an apparent suicide victim is found hanging above a complex pattern of forty photographs of children, Detective Inspector Jonah Pennance of the Met’s specialist Sapphire Unit is brought in to investigate.
A post-mortem reveals the suicide was murder, and Pennance realises he knows the man. But as the body count rises, all the signs point to a care home in Kent – a place that Pennance is all too familiar with.
The problem is the only person connecting the victims is Pennance – and he has a solid motive for wanting them dead… Can Pennance prove his innocence?

This is a must read book one in the new and gripping DI Jonah Pennance Series. Refreshingly different. I couldn’t put it down. Cannot wait for the next book in this superb series. Although this is a brief review I cannot recommend this book enough. If you haven’t read one of Keith Nixon’s other books then you cannot do better than start right here.
D I Jonah Pennance is one of the rare caring and insightful detectives who goes above and beyond to obtain justice for victims.
A wonderfully presented and thoroughly absorbing read. The book is one of the best I have read this year. Highly recommended.
Detective Inspector Jacob Pennance gets caught in the middle of 4 murders. One of the victims rented a car using Pennance's name while another one had Jacob's cop ID in his pocket. As the bodies pile up, he begins to see the connection between the victims but is baffled as to any possible suspects. Pennance is a solid new character......a no nonsense cop who isn't afraid to break the rules. I look forward to #2 in this series.
Intriguing fast paced read with complex dynamic characters. One of the questions that you make ask yourself after reading this book is how far you would be willing to go for those in your family and it might lead to some interesting answers that you hope you never have to answer. I voluntarily read an advance readers copy of this book.
Another top tale by a master author, Keith Nixon has done it again.
I absolutely loved his books and this one certainly did not disappoint. From quite in-depth post mortems to scenic Anglesey, Kent and London, this tale shows Jonah is certainly not stuck in a whale, but is an intriguing Inspector who looks to have many more tales written ready to be read and enjoyed.
Clever and fast paced tale of murder. An unidentified body is found, hanging, apparently suicide but the photographs of numerous children are found arranged around the body and the post mortem says it was murder. The body count starts to mount up and the only connection seems to be a Detective inspector himself as there is a personal connection to all the victims, embedded in his childhood and a care home. I enjoyed this story and the multi faceted plot lines and the ingenious and well researched aspects it covers. I was particularly fascinated by the links to the pharmaceutical world of medical research and the ethics around this that the book explored, head on. Great writing and an enjoyable storyline.
Read and reviewed for ZooLoos Book Tours, Keith Nixon and Gladius Press.
Publication date 28th February 2022.
This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the first book in the 'DI Jonah Pennance Thriller' series.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of Ian Rankin, Stuart MacBride, and Peter James Blood Sentence is the first book in the explosive series featuring Detective Inspector Jonah Pennance.' I am a huge fan of Ian Rankin and Stuart MacBride so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Gladius Press. I have yet to read a book published by Gladius Press that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 34 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in London, England 🏴 and Wales 🏴 UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. I actually recognised several places mentioned such as Marble Arch in London which I visited last year and Conwy Bay which was excellent to help me picture the scenes.
This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonist is DI Jonah Penance. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
'Blood Sentence' discusses some topics that may trigger some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Keith discusses/includes child abuse.
This book is very well written with vivid descriptions that really set the scene for the reader. The cover and synopsis suit the storyline perfectly.
The storyline was intriguing, multi-layered and fast paced. I became completely invested in the storyline which took place over several locations. The plot was filled with murder, secrets, tension, suspense, mystery and everything you could want in a crime thriller. I enkoyed the storyline and thought the way thay Keith has linked the pharmaceutical world of medical research and woven it into a crime novel was fascinating. The fact that Keith has done his research shines through so a huge congratulations Keith, there is nothing worse than when an author includes a subject they know nothing about and haven't bothered researching as it completely spoils the storyline. The crimes themselves were unique and imaginative with just the right amount of gore. There are so many ways to murder somebody but I hadn't come across at least one of the methods used in this book in another one. There were several twists that I did not expect so another congratulations Keith. I have read so many crime thrillers that it is getting harder and harder to shock me but I was shocked on at least two occasions!! An absolutely fantastic start to what promises to be an addictive new series!!
It is always worrying when starting a new series as you have no idea who the characters are. It is very important for me to bond with not only the lead protagonists but strangely I find it important that I like the pathologist too. In this case the pathologists were Ingraham and Clough and I am pleased to say that I really liked them both and they both had fantastic memorable personalities.
The characters were all realistic, strong and well defined each with their own unique personalities. This is the first book in a new series so there were several new characters to meet. I nmwas completely invested in Jonah and although I didn't quite "click" with him immediately his character definitely grew on me. However, I liked both Simone and Hanson immediately along with both pathologists Ingraham and Clough. Evans was very blunt and although I wasn't a fan of his, his attitude did make me laugh a few times along with some of his interactions with Jonah. Overall there was a great eclectic mix of personalities and I'm looking forward to meeting many of them again in the next book in this series.
Overall an action packed explosive start to what promises to be an addictive series.
Genres covered in this book include Police Procedural, Crime Thriller, Contemporary Fiction, Mystery and Crime Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Ian Rankin, Stuart MacBride, and Peter James.

This story thrusts the reader immediately into the action with a prologue from the perspective of a potential victim, and I was immediately hooked.
We then follow the main character, DI Jonah Pennance, as he plunges into the twisted trap designed just for him, forcing him to relive and reveal all of the dark secrets from his past; secrets he has tried to supress even from himself.
What ensues is a series of brutal murders: psychologically terrifying and humiliating; horrific without being gory. Between that and the potentially triggering issues of child pornography, paedophilia and child sexual abuse, this story is not always an easy read emotionally. It is, however, an excellent police procedural – well-written, with believable characters and a gripping plot that is part medical thriller, in addition to the childhood mystery, espionage-esque action, political intrigue and suspense.
While there is plenty going on as the plot twists, the author never loses his firm grip on the characters and carries the reader with him effortlessly from beginning to end.
I was left desperate for to join Jonah on another case, and yet intrigued as to how that would unfold given his deeply personal history with this last one! I can’t wait to find out where the author is heading with this series and will be following his new releases avidly (and possibly also adding some of his previous releases to my tottering TBR tower!).
Highly recommended to anyone who loves a police investigation that is strongly character-driven and somewhat on the dark side.
‘The instant Pennance stepped over the threshold the smell hit him. Decaying meat. Like at the rear of an abattoir, where the discards ended up before disposal. Pennance always aimed to experience every facet of a crime scene, no matter what that entailed. He paused a few feet inside and breathed in deeply, battling his body’s desire to gag as the putrid stench caught the back of his throat, as if someone had scraped rotting flesh across his lungs. The fingers of the reek were that powerful, that penetrating, they reached inside him the moment he opened his mouth. He felt eyes on him, glanced over his shoulder. Both uniforms were watching him, each expression a classic shocked question mark.'
This was a fast-paced, interesting read, that I found I did not want to put down! Great, multi-faceted characters. Suspenseful and thrilling. Kept me intrigued from the first page to the last. Great start to a new series!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
I loved the book, read it in 2 sittings! Couldn’t put it down! Am looking forward to reading no. 2! What a complex story culminating in quite the surprise. Well done, Keith!
I’m a massive fan of Keith’s work so jumped at the chance to be part of the blog tour, I already had the book downloaded so was eager to get stuck in.
From the blurb I was already excited, a new series by Keith..what’s not to love? But the name Pennance.. that rung a bell. If you are a fan of Nixon’s work you’ll know Pennance had a small role in the author’s previous Solomon Gray series so I was great to see him get his own story!
I know what to expect from Keith so I’ve high expectations.. boy did he deliver! But the best thing was simply the feeling the book gave me, it felt familiar with the tie back to the authors previous work but also new and refreshing.
So you want to know about the plot. The book starts with the death of a man in strange circumstances and it soon becomes clear for DI Pennance there’s links to his past.. things he would rather forget.
His attention is drawn away as he’s pulled to Wales to assist in some enquires..the case has his name written all over it but Pennence doesn’t have a clue how he’s involved.
It’s kind of a whirlwind from then on as Pennence struggles to put the pieces together, investigating a death of an animal rights activist and how the hell it links back to him! He doesn’t even know the guy.
In Nixon’s style which I love, the author weaves the tale in such a masterful way that the truth only becomes clear when he wants it to and Penances’ world is turned upside down forever.
It’s not a typical police procedural tale, it’s a thriller, its personal, intense and gritty with some marvellous storytelling! I almost feel bad I demolished this in a couple sittings but it’s a real page turner and sucks you in!
Reading the first book of a new series is always going to be different from reading the subsequent books in the series. In the first book you’re getting to know the main characters, in this case Detective Inspector Jonah Penance, the protagonist, and a few of his cohorts that will presumably appear in subsequent installments. As you continue the series that sense of discovery will lessen, but instead you’ll be getting the latest from an “old friend,” which still appeals, but in a different way.
This story is unique because the evidence points towards Penance as the obvious suspect. We know (okay, we’re pretty sure) that he didn’t commit the crimes. If he did then he doesn’t remember it and we’ve got much bigger issues and little chance of subsequent cases, so we can probably rule that out. However, in investigating the case we find out much more about Penance and his personal history than is typical for a fictional police detective. With things hitting so close to home it makes for a much more intense case than the typical detective story for both the fictional detective and the reader. As with all good mysteries, it kept me guessing the whole way.

Blood Sentence by Keith Nixon. Di Jonah Pennance book 1. Three bodies, one suspect. A post-mortem reveals the suicide was murder, and Pennance realises he knows the man. I liked Jonah. I loved his no nonsense attitude. I hope there is more to come. 5*.
Jonah Pennance gets a call to a murder the victim found in a car they claim belongs to him. This phone call sparks a chain of events which link Jonah to murders of other people. The story is well written and the character of Jonah is portrayed well. I really enjoyed reading this book.
DI Jonah Pennance ends up in the middle of 3 murders that end up all linked together..he has to face his past and meets up with someone he thought had gone forever..DI Pennance loves his job and goes all out to get justice. I'd happily read another one with him in it.
WOW! What a brilliant read this book was. It is the first book in the DI Jonah Pennance series and what an opener it is.
When Pennance is dragged away from a crime scene in London to go to Anglesey, he isn't expecting to find that he is a connection, not that he is connected to others. I have to be really careful here, it would be so easy to make a slip up in this review and reveal details!!!
Pennance, well he is mystified and so was I. I mean how could he be connected to two bodies, one a suicide in Wales and a murder in London. He works for the Sapphire Unit of the MET, it's the department that deals with sex crimes, so it becomes more and more intriguing.
Pennance is a bit of a closed book, the only person who he seems to really get on with is a work colleague, Smithson. The relationship between them is friendly and supportive and I am glad it is a friendship rather than a relationship as it means that Pennance has someone to turn to. Why would he need someone to turn to I hear you ask, well the more you learn about him the more you realise the complexities of his character. Yeah, I know, vague!
The author has created a wonderfully intense and twisted police procedural that has some really dark scenes, it is twisted around one main plot, but it isn't straightforward. It also has subplots that keep you on your toes and makes for very addictive reading.
Pennance is a character that comes across as cold, so having a sidekick as such makes a good balance. You do get to learn more about him and his past and I think there is possibly more to come out, I definitely think there are more layers to him for the author to tease out, there is definitely the potential from this reader's opinion.
This is a crime thriller, it has a very mysterious feel to it and it kept me reading. It feels wrong to call a book exciting when it deals with murders and crime, but exciting it is as it is the start of a new series, and I think it is going to be a very good one. I will be keeping my eye out for more.
Ideal for those looking for something new in police procedurals. It's got plenty of twists, some unexpected turns and all in all a fab read. It is one I would definitely recommend.
In quick succession DI Jonah Pennance becomes aware of three strange deaths. The first is the hanging of a man surrounded by pictures of children. Pennance is part of the Met’s Sapphire Unit which specialises in child exploitation and is brought in to investigate what has been shown to be murder. Shockingly he recognises one of the photos but by this time he has already been ordered to travel to Anglesey to look into the strange death of Christopher Nugent, an animal rights activist who used to work in genetics at a pharmaceutical company in Thanet, Kent, an area where Pennance had spent some time in a children’s home. Nugent had been sacked when it was shown he was leaking secrets and oddly had just registered a second-hand car in Pennance’s name. Pennance gets the identification on the hanged man and realizes he was one of the two evil nurses at the children’s home. Soon after he has to travel to Thanet where a nearby drowning is definitely a case of murder as the victim was shut in a wooden cage. Once more Pennance has been lured to the crime, this time by the use of an old warrant card of his, and once again he knows the victim. Whilst still on the coast, Pennance makes the strangest discovery of all – one concerning his dead sister. Then, as he proceeds with his inquiries, all these confused and bizarre strands start to come together and make sense. But as he delves deeper, the secrets that come to light as he hunts down a killer will leave everyone reeling. This is an absolutely superb story from start to finish, with loads of action and suspense, and filled with surprises and twists. I really liked Pennance and the relationships between him and both DCS Devon Kelso and DS Simone Smithson were great, very warm and, humorous at times. It’s a brilliant start to the new series and I can’t wait to see what comes next! 5*

When the unidentified corpse of an apparent suicide victim is found hanging above a complex pattern of forty photographs of children, Detective Inspector Jonah Pennance of the Met's specialist Sapphire Unit is brought in to investigate. As the body count rises, all the signs point to a care home in Kent – a place that Pennance is all too familiar with. The problem is the only person connecting the victims is Pennance – and he has a solid motive for wanting them dead. Can Pennance prove his innocence? Blood Sentance is a complex, absorbing, fast-paced murder mystery with a multi-layered storyline and relateable convincing characters. The police procedural elements are fascinating. This book has it all, murder, fraud, drug development and misuse, revenge and retribution—a totally gripping read. I have previously read this author's Solomon Gray series (which I also highly recommend) and am soo glad that the author has chosen to give DI Pennance his own series of cases. Keith Nixon's writing grabbed my attention when I was introduced to DS Solomon Gray in 'Dig Two Graves' and does so again with the first book in this spanking new series. Blood Sentence is the perfect start to what promises to be another enthralling series, and I look forward to the next instalment. I am happy to recommend it.
This is book 1 of a new series featuring DI Jonah Pennance, a member of the Metropolitan Police specialist Sapphire team. A very well written and faced paced read with an intriguing storyline and some excellent characters, not just the police officers but two well described and likeable pathologists. This book had me from the first page and I was still there at the last, wishing it was longer.
Briefly, when an unidentified man is found hanged in an empty building in North London Pennance, is called in to investigate. Beneath the hanging body are photographs of children. Whilst initially thought as a suicide it quickly becomes apparent that murder has been committed and further Pennance realises he knows the man from his youth. Connections to further incidents in North Wales and Margate all lead back to Pennance. Working with his colleague DS Simone Smithson can he prove his innocence? How far would you go to protect your family?
An entertaining and addictive page turner. It is clear there are strong feelings between Jonah and Simone and it will be interesting to see how this develops. Twists and turns to keep you guessing and I was surprised by some of the reveals. A brilliant start to a new series, I love a good police procedural, and I’m looking forward to book 2. Hopefully that will also deserve ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Blood Sentence is the first book in a new series featuring D.I Jonah Pennance, who is part of the Met police specialist Sapphire unit. Keith Nixon is an author who has always written books that I enjoy reading. Blood Sentence is a fast paced and very well written book. His characters are so real and add depth to this story.
Pennance is called in to investigate a man found hanged with pictures of children beneath the body. A death that is first thought to be suicide is actually murder and we see Pennance realising he knows the dead man from his younger years. As further incidents seem to link back to Pennance too we see him trying to prove his innocence with D.S Simone Smithsons help. Will he be able to succeed on doing so?
This is a fantastic starting point for a series. I am dying to know what's next for Pennance and interested to see what develops as the series unfolds.
Keith Nixon always has the knack of bringing a storyline that keeps the reader turning the pages. He brings twists that you don't forsee and reveals that manages to surprise you. Even with all that he still keeps the characters right in the forefront of the story for you to get invested in. This is a series that I am looking forward to the next book being published already.
There are some authors who just know how to pull off the most intriguing, addictive (to the point you are oblivious to the world around you) and wow, crime thrillers. Keith Nixon falls absolutely into that camp.
Having read some of his excellent Solomon Gray series, I must admit, I was already a committed fan. But I was interested to understand whether he could pull off a series that was equally compelling but also had a very different narrative and group of characters. So, I picked up Blood Sentence and can vouch for the fact that it was equally intriguing, addictive and, again, ‘wow.’
Although DI Pennance was a character included in some of the Sol Gray series, he was not dominant. In this new series, however, he leads the story as both investigator and, as the plot unfolds, it appears that there is a serial killer (s) selecting their victims with a direct association with him.
This is a powerful, all-encompassing thriller. Highly recommend
Now I’m not usually a fan of police procedurals but this reeled me in from the start with an unusual and brutal murder. DI Jonah Pennance is called in due to the nature of the photographs surrounding the body but when another death is discovered and his name is linked to it, his past is dragged into the present. With secrets being unearthed and links to a dubious pharmaceutical company, this book had many twists and turns. Pennance is a great character being able to empathise with some people but also has a dogged determination, pulling no punches when the need arises. He has a solid team of people behind him including Koehler and Smithson. This book moved a great pace, finishing with a very satisfying climax. I may just have to change my mind about procedurals as I can’t wait to find out what DI Pennance’s next case is.
I have been eagerly awaiting the next book from this author having been a huge fan of their previous series, so was really looking forward to getting stuck in to this one.
DI Jonah Pennance is called to a grim scene due to the nature of objects found with the body meanng his particular expertise is needed. But just as he is about to get stuck into the case, he is summoned to Wales as a body has been found in a car registered to him, the only problem is, he doesn't own a car!
Pennance finds himself in the midst of a fast unravelling story that have more than a passing connection to his own troubled childhood, but can he keep focused on the task at hand?
This was a great start to a new series and I look forward to see where it goes next!
This is a very good police procedural and it's a little different. Jonah is a DI in the Sapphire unit who gets caught up in a murder in North Wales taking him away from a murder case in Burnt Oak. As time passes there are other deaths and some strange connections. I rather enjoyed this book. The writing is fluid and engaging- I read this in one day because it was such an easy book to read: but one with rounded characters with fulfilling back stories (the ones that count) and a realistic and gripping storyline. Jonah Pennance is a wonderful main character and there are some interesting side characters that I feel sure will develop over time and future books. I recommend this- It's a real good read!
Wow. This book. Thankful I have next one already - whew! Detective Inspector Jonah Pennance is called to a murder scene - a 60ish man dangling from a rope, on the floor pictures of young children of various ages. Naked and terrified. While observing the scene, Jonah is tasked with another murder - in Wales. On his return home, Jonah asks his college Simone to do some digging on related issues. And identifies the body of the man - someone from Jonah's past. More bodies, connected to Jonah's childhood lead him to repressed memories, taking a closer look at his sister's life. Creative, amazing twists and satisfying ending.
Couldn't wait to start this series! I am a fan of Keith Nixon's Solomon Gray series. An awesome spin-off is the coolest thing! We met DI Jonah Pennance, but now we really get to know him. He's just minding his own police business when he's corralled into one case after another. The evidence in these cases point to him and those around him, and tap into his personal past. There's some darkness there, so I was rooting for him right away. We know he's innocent, so I wanted to see him come clear of this. The writing was amazing and I could not put it down. Do Not Miss This Series. I am on to the 2nd book.
It begins with a death that is seemingly related to conspiracies and medical labs... but then more bodies turn up and the connecting factor becomes DI Pennance himself. There are clues that lead to him, and several of the victims worked at a care home where abuse was rife. Where Pennance stayed as a child for some time. Knowing he isn't the culprit, can he find out who is?
An intriguing and tense mystery that touches on some unpleasant topics along the way. A promising start to a crime series.
A cracking opening, laying out the first of the clues, the first of the unanswered questions. No reader of crime fiction could resist, and I wasn’t disappointed.
The characters have depth, and each has a soul. Is Pennance being set up, or is he being led on? The reader is kept guessing. A great start to another series from Keith Nixon, and Pennance and Smithson are going to be formidable characters to carry it. Highly recommended.
DI Jonah Pennance investigates crimes involving children. He is called in to a suspicious suicide. As he digs into the victim's life, there are multiple connections to Pennance's own troubled past. Too much intrigue to say more without spoilers. A terrific police procedural and I will be following this series.
A perfect 5* read, a well written police procedural that gripped my from the first page and made sure I was hooked until the last! A new DI is on the pages and he doesn’t disappoint, he’s hot just enough of his own problems to make him relatable and just dedicated enough to make him real. An excellent read I’ll be looking for the next book
