소설과 애니메이션으로 독자들에게 많은 사랑을 받았던 ‘고전부’ 시리즈의 작가 요네자와 호노부의 블랙 청춘 성장소설이다. 태어나지도 못했던 누나가 갑자기 존재하고 2년 전에 이미 죽은 여자친구가 멀쩡하게 살아 있다. 우연히 가능 세계(평행 세계)로 워프한 소년이 겪는 일련의 사건을 그리고 있다. 영문도 모르고 갑자기 이세계에 내쳐진 소년이 현실 세계와의 차이를 깨닫고 그 원인을 알게 되면서 자신의 존재 의의와 영향을 재차 인식해나가는 성장소설이라 할 수 있다.
요네자와 호노부는 보통의 청춘소설에서 다루지 않는 요소를 끄집어내 차별화된 감성과 주제로 이야기를 이끌어나가는 데에 특출난 작가다. 그의 작품 중에서도 유난히 무겁고 씁쓸한 뒷맛을 가지고 있는 『보틀넥』은 청춘소설에서는 금기라고 할 수 있는 자신의 존재에 대한 부정을 그린 작품이다. 사춘기에 가지는 환상이라고 표현할 수 있는 고통을 수반하는 청춘 소설로, 독기와도 같은 신랄한 부정적 현실 인식은 마치 절벽 꼭대기에서 누군가가 날 밀어 떨어뜨리는 듯한 아찔한 감각과 조우하게 만든다.

About the author

Honobu Yonezawa (米澤穂信), Yonezawa Honobu, born 1978) loved making up stories even as a child and began writing fiction at the age of 14. By the time he got to university he was posting stories on his own website. After graduation he continued writing while working in a bookstore, and first got into print in 2001 when Hyoka (Ice Cream), a YA mystery novel he submitted for the Kadokawa School Novel Prize competition, earned an honorable mention. Sayonara yosei (Farewell, Sprite), a critically acclaimed story of the relationship between Japanese high-school boys and a girl from war-torn Yugoslavia, helped cement his reputation when it was published in 2004. Since then he has been a regular presence on lists of the year's best mysteries. Oreta ryukotsu (Broken Keel) won the Mystery Writers of Japan Award for Novels in 2011. Though known especially for his distinctive and fresh blending of the tale of youth with the whodunit, Yonezawa has also made forays into science fiction, as with 2006’s Botorunekku (Bottleneck) and 2007’s Inshitemiru (Try Indulging), a sinister "murder game" story. In 2013 he published the novel Rikashiburu (Recursible). He is a leading figure among Japan's younger generation of mystery writers.

久々に没頭できた青春ミステリー。ぶっ飛んだ背景ではないけど、日常の錯誤みたいな状況をめちゃめちゃ掘り出してきた感じ。むしろホラーにカテゴライズできてしまうくらいのゾクゾク感。

I'm not sure why I liked this as well as I did. It hit a sweet spot--the protagonist was amiable but not lovable, the action interesting but not flashy, the fantasy very, very mild, but profound in its way. Maybe it's something to do with reading in a second language, but it seemed quite enjoyably mellow. I wouldn't say I couldn't put it down, but I didn't.

東尋坊からの帰りの飛行機で読み始めた。
なので、東尋坊のシーンから始まり、金沢駅周辺の描写、日本海側の町の天気の移ろいやすさ、そして今度は金沢駅から北陸線で芦原温泉駅へ。途中小松駅が言及され、昨日私が通った道を逆走していて、楽しい。
電車の中や天気の様子が全て分かる。しかも舞台は12月初め。
しかも、私の好きなSF物。そして、主人公は壊れた家庭出身。気に入る要素は盛沢山。

けれど、物語の持って行き方や文章の書き方が、ちょっと稚拙に感じるうえに、文章や物語の流れが不自然に感じて、そんなに内容は複雑じゃないはずなのに、何度も同じ文章を読む必要があったりして、途中からストレスに感じてしまった。
そして、登場人物達も、唐突に出てきて、主人公の内面の大きな感情の動きに、読者はついていけない。ちらちらと言及されている「兄」のキャラだって、中途半端に情報開示してるだけなので、主人公に共感ができない。
その辺りも、ちょっと無理矢理感があった。
（友人にこの作家とその著作「氷菓 Hyouka 」の話をしたら、「ラノベ出身の人だっけ」と言ってた。納得。）

が、これだけなら「ついさっきまで物語の舞台にいたので、文字通り空気感が分かって楽しい」という気持ちもあって、☆を一つ上乗せした☆４の気分で読んでいた。

けれど、大ぶろしきを広げたにも関わらず、物語の結論はまさに「竜頭蛇尾」という感じの終わり方。
夢オチ、とまでは言わないけれど、中途半端にホラー的というか、精神世界的説明というか。
残念。
「東尋坊の帰りに読んだ」という追加の☆が無かったら☆２つ。
ただただdepressingな終わり方で微妙に後味が悪かった。
（「この世に存在したくない」なんて、私がずーっと感じてる感情すぎて、新鮮味もないし...）

ちょっと変わった設定の青春小説だと思って読んだら最後の方「うわ〜」ってなった。
