It only takes one night for the world to turn on its head...

Finishing my second degree was supposed to be a quiet time of wrapping up my academic work and maybe making a friend or two before everyone left town. That was before the monsters started attacking.

I've always ignored the strange occurrences that tend to happen around me, but now these creatures are hunting me, everything I touch is erupting into flame, and all I've got to help is a guy I barely know, his reclusive sister, an invitation to train with a secretive magical faction, and a strange necklace that apparently belongs to the magical world's most wanted...

I'm not used to trusting anyone, but as monsters close in, I don't think I have a choice.

If you love kick-ass heroines and magical adventures, you'll love FIRE, the first book in L.C. Mawson's new F/F urban fantasy series, Daughter of Nature.

Some say she's an ancient creature of nightmare that was unleashed from beneath the ocean, come to devour the souls of men. Others say that she's a cosmic being from the beyond the stars that has taken corporeal form to learn our ways for some unknown end...

In truth, L.C. Mawson lives in a tower in the middle of a haunted forest, far from civilisation and is definitely not a witch who curses those who trespass upon her land. And she definitely cannot turn into a dragon that flies over cities in the dead of night and whose cries are often mistaken for an approaching storm. Where did you hear that? That's absurd...

The only contact she has with humanity is publishing books every so often, which is definitely just for fun and not part of an ancient contract with a trickster god.

After being attacked by plant creature and nearly burning her house down, Poppy discovers that magic exists and that she has the ability to use fire. Determined to help her learn how to control her powers, her new friends Dana and Viktor take her to a city where practicing magic is common knowledge. However when Poppy discovers that the necklace she was given is the symbol of Amelia Bennett a notorious criminal, Poppy learns that there is a lot more to her magic than anyone expected.

I've been looking forward to this book for a while ever since I read a short story that featured some of the characters that the author wrote a while back. This book ended up being different than expected but not in a bad way. If you've read previous books in the universe, you will be familiar with some of the characters, but it is definitely not required. I am interested in seeing what happens next as the book ended on quite the cliffhanger.

Cute YA/NA fantasy story

SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: not a romance, non-human characters, out of your comfort zone, different gender identity, possibly other categories

Poppy, the MC of the ensemble, accidentally discovers that she has a magical power. Along her journey of discovery, she meets other non-human/magical beings that try to help figure out what type of being she truly is. She starts learning about the elements she is able to use while being with the the rest of the ensemble. Some, including Poppy, are neurodivergent, but there are no really significant triggers or issues mentioned other than knowing and disliking that they are treated differently by others.

I enjoy stories like this, but I think that my being middle-aged made me feel less connected to it. It would most likely be loved by the YA/NA generation, but others might really enjoy it, too.

A good, coming of age, fantasy adventure story. Poppy is a struggling student . She is working on an advanced degree. But when a vine creature attacks her, she responds with fire not even knowing that she had magical powers. Follow this story as members of previous stories are brought into the action. While the ending is positive, it is quite obvious that the real story has just begun.

Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Haunting. Scary. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

I received a review copy of this book from a third party. This is my honest review.

Fire (Daughter of Nature Book 1), my twenty-second read from author L.C. Mawson and the first book in her Daughter of Nature series. Entertaining, enjoyable, well-written fiction that I read in one sitting. I've already added Air (Daughter of Nature Book 2) to my TBR list. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. Next up, Trying to Break Curses in All the Wrong Places the prequel to the series. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Fire - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

A new YA fantasy series, Daughter of Nature, opens with Fire, introducing autistic post-graduate Poppy, as she learns of her eponymous dragon powers, after accidentally burning down her home.
Having learned she has dragon powers from David, a Guardian who's her new mentor, she goes to stay with siblings Viktor and Dana, for protection from the monsters attacking Guardians.
As the story progresses, similarities to Harry Potter's human upbringing and magic powers' development are included but LC Mawson will entrance you with her eco-friendly masterpiece.

Very boring and straightforward storyline. The characters are shallow written and main character behave kinda stupid all the time.
She haven't had any friends all her life due to autism, but suddenly she and people around her share interment informations about them self - and surprise they are all gays... this is by far the most boring fantasy story I have read. And even worse each volume is short and therefore expensive.

Poppy is a character you can understand, basically never really belonging and not having anyone she can really trust. She's learned only to rely on herself, until things in her life change and she ends up on an adventure to control her powers and learn more about herself. Along the way we meet Viktor, Dana, David, and so many others. Excited to learn when comes next with Skye.

Fire is a quick slow-slow-burn fantasy romance read. I gobbled it up and wanted the next one right away. I love the imagery and world building that Mawson has done for this series. There is a tie-in to another series, but you don’t need to read it to enjoy this one. There is lots of magic and mystery.

I received a free copy of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
