“You cannot hold yourself responsible for others’ actions,” Loch insisted. “You’re no more at fault for me pilfering Chase’s badge—”
“You took it again?”
“—than you are for anything my brothers do. And yes, I took it. It’s shiny, and I like it.”
Sloane laughed. He couldn’t help it. Loch was smiling so earnestly, and the heaviness in his chest eased.
“Yes, my sweet Starkiller?”
“We should talk to the deacon’s followers too,” Sloane said firmly as he tried to resist Loch’s advances. It felt good to struggle, especially when he knew he was going to give in.
“Thank you for listening, my love.”
“Hey, thank you for listening to me.” Sloane hugged him. “We’re gonna kick ass as parents. We got this. We can handle this crap. We saved the damn world!”
“Twice.”
“Exactly!” Sloane stroked Loch’s tentacles. “You know, somebody once told me we can do anything together.”
“That was me, yes?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
The triplets, Eb, Ebb, and Ebbeth, on the other hand, were spawned directly from Baub’s breast with a mere thought.
“Don’t you tell me to fucking calm down! Our fucking unborn baby vanished, and—” Sloane gasped as something dropped into his lap, and he swore he heard a faint giggle.
It was a sac, dark purple in color and shimmering like the inside of a geode.
“I think she’s making it easy for me.”
