Karlie is a star volleyball player at a small college in New England. Moving into the last available apartment on campus, she has high hopes until she finds its state less than stellar. Deciding to make the best out of a sketchy situation, she soldiers on. Until she locks herself out the first night. No one else has moved in, so she’s left with only one option. Call the university police to help.
Max is just settling into his new, temporary assignment as a police officer on one of the many college campuses in town. Heading home after patrolling the first day of move-in by the fall athletes, he agrees to take one last call. Little does he know what awaits him on the other side of the line. He just has to survive flaming appliances, nipple rings, rabid squirrels, and a basement dwelling chupacabra to win the girl of his dreams.
Avery Samson grew up on a ranch outside of a small west Texas town. Since she could remember, she’s had her face stuck in a book. High School graduation found her leaving ranch life for the big city.
After living all over the state of Texas, she now finds herself back on one of the family ranches near Dallas with her husband surrounded by cattle. A lot of them. They’re everywhere! When not traveling or reading, she spends her time writing.
Avery would love for you to follow her. She’s everywhere (just like those damn cows.)
Karlie is attending college and plays volleyball for the school as well. A turn of bad luck has her locked out of her apartment, so the campus sends Max, one of their officers, to assist and he seems to have a way of being there when she needs someone the most.
Max is on hiatus from his career as a police officer and is now working for the campus security. When he meets Karlie he is drawn to her in a way he never expected however he tries to deny his feelings as a romance between them could affect both their careers.
Max is the perfect mix of sweet and swoony as he and Karlie realize that some risks are worth the reward and them being together is one of them.
Volleyball player, police officer, forbidden romance with the perfect bit a spice. Also throw in an interfering Italian momma and sister. I don't know if it is suppose to be a rom com specifically, but there were some hilarious moments. I loved this book and how it all resolved and they got their HEA.
(Don't worry not an icky age difference. 20 to 25)
This is the first book in the series but can be read as a complete stand alone. Though we do get hints and who will get their HEA next, and I can not wait!!!
Nothing Ventured was a great little gem I stumbled across, I liked the blurb I read and didn't have a lot of expectations for it but I really enjoyed it.
From the fun flirty banter the main characters have, to the friendship between the girls in the story. There were just so many little things to like as well. The drama was appropriate for the story, although there were some things in the background kind of glossed over. I wonder if those would be explored in further books of the series. We'll just have to see.
Overall the characters seemed real and the events just as realistic. It was their interactions that really stole the show though. The story had an overall easy flow to it and just enough happening to keep me turning the pages and wanting more. Really enjoyed how the conflict was wrapped up but think it could have been fleshed out a little.
All that said, loved the story, loved the characters and will look for more from Avery Samson. . . . Karlie is back at college early to get ready for volleyball training, this year she's got a shared house off campus with a bunch of other girls. Honestly, it's not the best house but after the last year in the overcrowded dorms, it has to be worth it. On night one after moving in she manages to lock her keys in one of the living areas of the strangely organized house so her only option is to call the campus police to help her out. She is used to the older men who she has met on campus before she was not at all prepared for the hot cop who knocked on her door.
Max was on his way home for the night when he agreed to stop by the locked-out student's house before leaving campus. He was not expecting the woman who stood on her doorstep giving him a once over or her oddly crazy chatter or how gorgeous she was and the fact that if he wasn't a campus officer he would ask her out in a second. After one rescue though, Max can't stop thinking about her and when she needs saving again he knows that he wants her and can't stay away. He has no idea how to make something out of it when the consequences for them both would be too great of a risk.
Karlie seems to keep bumping into Max and she doesn't mind it all. Some of those moments may have been a little more than an accident but others were just by chance. Every interaction makes her interest in Max grow, she knows nothing can happen as he is staff on campus they can't have anything more than friendship but it's getting harder and harder to hold themselves to those boundaries. After a near-miss on Halloween and Max comes to the rescue again all the build-up and want boils over and they cross that line that is laid out for them.
Now they have to sneak around and steal moments where they can and keep their relationship out of the eyes of the college staff. It only takes one moment of forgetting their boundaries for their secret to come out. The end result costs Max his job and gets Karlie written up. With no idea how to protect her apart from letting her go Max pushes Karlie away and works himself to the ground trying to get over her. Karlie manages to compete in the NCAA finals but inside she is just broken and she has no idea how to get over Max.
When Max gets a wake-up call from his fellow officers he can't believe the time he has wasted staying away from Karlie. It may not be easy to get her to understand why he did what he did but he's sick of being without her and he's going to get her back and make everything right again. 'Reaching a hand into her hair, he pulled her lips against his in one motion. The instant she melted against him, he felt his shattered heart pick itself up off the ground.' "It was pointed out at the end of shift today that there was a simple solution to my problem. I just needed to get my girl back."
This book had a simple plot and sweet MCs. This is a great feel-good read or palate cleanser after reading something dark or heavy. A little over halfway in the book between the banter the spice ramps up and whew! Here for it.
As a former college athlete who was a scholarship volleyball player I was excited to see a romance book about a volleyball! I didn’t know these existed and I’m so glad I found this one. Throughout the book I was reminded of my own experiences as a collegiate student-athlete. I could get picky here comparing it to my own experience, ie most athletes have no qualms about partying and drink like fish if you’re smart about it and you have 2-hour practice + 1 hour of weights and conditioning 5 days/week (at least), but that’s irrelevant. And I suppose Karlie did party a few times despite being in season even though it was against her personal rules, so that checks out. And not to stereotype and oversexualize women, but you do wear spandex when playing volleyball and I’m surprised that’s something Max didn’t note that as a benefit to watching Karlie’s games.
I enjoyed reading about both MCs. It’s easy to see they are both genuinely good people. It was surprising to me that Karlie was as inexperienced as she was when she had this brave, gregarious, and quirky personality. Or rather I guess the surprising part was how quickly she went from close to no experience to “all the way” in such a short time frame with a guy she hardly knew. But when there’s a spark I guess it’s different, and this is a romance novel after all.
There were some areas where I think the author lingered a little too much on the details of the MCs’ mundane tasks. I agree it’s important to know what they’re going through but I think adding that level of detail or further developing their relationship would’ve been better. Also I’m not sure what the title has to do with the actual storyline.
The fact or fiction section at the end was fun. You get to learn more about the author’s college experience. But hello, which town is it set in so we can stalk *ahem* research the local police force?!
Overall, this was a cute and fun read. Great for when you need a little pick-me-up. And I wouldn’t mind seeing more volleyball-themed romances in the future!

Avery Samson, ‘Nothing Ventured’. A New England Romance.
As an Hidden Gems ARC reader I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily wrote an honest review. Here it is.
Rating: 4 (of 5 stars).
In general: Romance with complications.
Main characters: - Karlie James (19). She’s the talented and ambitious libero of her school volleyball team. Karlie had unpleasant roommates in her campus dorm and moves into an old university apartment.
- Max(im) Scaletti (25). He’s a police officer, caring for his mom and younger sister, Chiara. After several dangerous undercover assignments, he gets an ‘easy’ job as a campus guard at the university where both, Karlie and Chiara study.
Karlie and Max meet when Karlie leaves her room and locks herself out. Due to the illogical construction of the old building it happens a few times. Max has to rescue her again and again and admires the sassy, athletic volleyball player more and more. The author, Avery Samson, then describes how Karlie and Max fall in love. But it’s complicated. He’s an university employee and she’s a student who has to concentrate on her volleyball career. A relationship between them is strictly forbidden. So serious problems arise before they find their happy end. The author created a charming book. Many interesting action scenes, sassy dialogues, sweet love meetings and wonderful main characters. Perhaps some complications are a bit overdone to stay credible, but all in all the book was - for me - a pleasure to read.
This is the first book in The New England Romance series by Avery Sansom. I actually read book 2, Best Laid Schemes, first but it didn't detract from Nothing Ventured. I absolutely loved this book, it's about Karlie who lives on the campus of a university and plays volleyball for the school team and Max a police officer with the campus police. Karlie is so funny, her head is full of lots of facts about anything and everything. Her best friend Sam is very loyal and funny too. Max meets Karlie when she got locked out of her room in a run down old building on campus. Max falls for her immediately but knows that having a relationship with a student would mean that he would lose his job and Karlie would lose her place at university. Max decides to step back from Karlie but still likes to keep an eye on her from a distance. His sister Chiara is a friend of Karlie's and he keeps a brotherly eye on her too. Despite having to keep their friendship above board they start falling for each other. However, a momentary slip up causes their relationship to come to the attention of the dean of the university and Max's senior officer. Despite that , it is a story that had me smiling as I was reading it. Max is such a sweet guy, apart from when he thinks about what he wants to do with Karlie! It has a lovely ending and I will now start reading #3 in the series! I highly recommend this book! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is a very cute slow burn with enough heat to keep things interesting. Karlie is a sophomore in college and Max is working as campus police while recovering from an injury he sustained while working undercover for the regular police.
Since Max is technically working for the university, there is a strict no fraternizing with the students policy. Plus, with Karlie being there on scholarship their relationship could place that in jeopardy.
There are many laugh out loud moments with Karlie’s regurgitation of random facts that keeps Max laughing and on his toes. You get to fall in love with these two as they are falling in love with each other.
Just as I was thinking that the slow burn was getting old the author thankfully moved things along and the relationship picked up momentum.
There was a small amount of angst and I’m so glad it was from an external source and not from the couple themselves.
There are a few areas that seemed to be mentioned but didn’t seem to have much bearing on the story…maybe it’s for other books?!? Plus some areas that were a bit of a stretch but nothing to major to take me out of the story.
For me this was a quick fun read, where I enjoyed both characters immensely and the supporting cast added a nice rounded genuine feel to the story.
I received an ARC and I am leaving an honest review.
A match made after locking herself out of the apartment- meet an amazing duo: volleyball player Karlie and a handsome cop Max.
Small college in New England is where Karlie just got into her new apartment for the year. It's the first night and she has managed to lock herself out of the apartment, with the only solution to call university police. There are lots of bad things in her apartment but being rescued by policeman Max isn't one of them, actually the contrary...
This was such a cute and funny story. A light read when you need the escape from everyday life. I felt like reading a Wattpad story, and I mean that in the absolute best way, but with better writing (I'm sorry Wattpad writers).
I love the author's writing style and its flow, so I am sure that I am gonna give other books by her a chance as well. And I can't wait to read the series sequel.
A few things that bothered me (but didn't take away the likeness of the story): - the connection between Police, SWAT team and University police - Max wearing Kevlar on the campus - Max combusting - nobody seeing that there's not really a problem with their dating after Max left the job
It was a really cute story. I like how nobody came between them the entire time and that they just chose each other, even when it hurt. Karlie and Max work so well together and I loved the maturity in Karlie for her age. She was super quirky and I love that since I too am quirky. The side characters were equally great and there are multiple opportunities for spin-offs or just more in the same series.
I thought that this author wrote a really great story. I think the only thing that I would have done would be to cut some of the in-between story just a hair and then add a couple more scenes where the love story is shown more... Maybe some pillow talk where they learn more about each other or something. I don't know what exactly and I understand that isn't 100% helpful but I just wanted more of the love story development I guess. Also, the chapters felt long. It's not necessarily a bad thing and didn't sway me on my star decision too much but I know that some people would rather there be shorter chapters... gives that subconscious feel of accomplishment.
All in all, I would recommend this book and author. Great story! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A forbidden romance. A campus police and a student are attracted to each other, but they are not allowed to date. Students can't date staff members. It's witty with a dry sense of humour.
Max is a campus police. Karlie has just moved in a capmus apartment. On her first day of moving in, she finds herself locked out of the apartment. Never fear, Max is here. He comes to the rescue whilst getting an eyeful of what's beneath her attire. After all, she gave him a thorough visual examination when she saw him, so it's only fair. He is impressed by her factoids which are quite funny. The incident reccurs and she gets help again. From there they strike a tentative friendship even if they are not allowed. When things get heated, their relationship takes a downward spiral. He could lose his job and she could be penalised. Is there a way of finding their way back to each other?
Max is totally invested in Karlie,. Her friends are fun and supportive. His love for his sister and mother is palpable. It's a great concept that all is well that ends well.
I received an eARC from BookSirens and the views expressed are my personal opinion.
This is a new series by this author taking place at a small college in New England. Its a very forbidden romance as Max, is an employee of the college and a police officer and Karlie is a student, a college volleyball player and employees' and students are prohibited from having a relationship of any kind.
These two really try and fight their feelings but things get complicated when Max's sister also becomes friends with Karlie and her friends. Max also is very drawn to Karlie and he has a hard time resisting her as well.
Karlie is a really fun character and a real sweetheart. I totally adored her and I loved all the mishaps she had and how she had to call campus police to come and save her.
Max falls for Karlie fast and he understands the repercussions if they take their friendship further and I loved how hard he tries to fight his feelings for her.
This was an awesome story with a bit of insta lust but also a wonderful forbidden romance that was sweet, hot and a lot of fun. I cannot wait for more in this series.
I received a complimentary early release copy of this e-book from the author prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.
College is hard enough without the added stress of moving into the equivalent of the fun house at the carnival. Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration. Still, what do bugs, demonic appliances, and chupacabras have in common? Karlie's positive it's her new apartment. But, she's a glass half-full type of person. She can survive a couple nights by herself until the rest of her roommates arrive. But why are there so many different ways to lock yourself out of your own apartment?
Karlie has one option, call the campus police department to open her door. One of the old cops should be standing at her door grumbling about letting her in. Instead she's greeted by strong thighs and a lot of arm porn crossed over what hints at abs hard enough to bounce a quarter off of. Somewhere, under all of that Kevlar. He's young too. And smiling back at her. Maybe this year won't be so bad after all.
I hope you enjoy my brand new romantic comedy series! It begins with Max & Karlie, a gorgeous cop and a dedicated student volleyball player.
Avery Samson has written the story I dreamed of living, and nearly did!
Nothing Ventured tells the story of Karlie a sophomore volleyball player at a Northeast University, who manages to make her presence known to the local campus police. . .by locking herself out of her college apartment, more than once. Katie is a beautiful, intelligent, athletic, and quirky young woman who happens to live with a great group of friends.
Undercover cop turned campus cop, Max Scaletti is called to let a student athletes into their room prior to campus move in day where he meets the one and only Karlie and there is something about her that makes his heart stop. But he knows that she is 19 and a student and he is a young officer but also a professional and that dating a student is a no-go. So why cant he keep his eyes off of her.
Will Max make something happen with Karlie? Will she go after him? What would happen if they were to start a secret relationship? Read Nothing Venture to gain the whole story. . .

A quirky, forbidden romance that is a quick pick-me-up on a nice spring day.
Karlie is living in a college apartment and is the first to arrive among her roommates for the new school year. On her very first day she locks herself out of her apartment and the only thing to do is contact campus security to get her back inside. A tall drink of hunky kevlar covered cop appears and their meet-cute is solidified. After that Karlie's run-ins with Max go from cute to sometimes life threatening, but thank goodness he is there to protect and serve.
While Max knows there should be no personal fraternization with students, his feelings only continue to get stronger with every interaction. Karlie is a light he just can't look away from and it's get harder and harder to stay away.
The secondary characters are fun, especially Max's sister and the very helpful bartender, this series will only continue to grow.
Two socially awkward cuties. College sophomore volleyball star and a cop temporarily assigned to campus police duty. A meet cute when she locks herself out of her creepy student housing apartment. The overall story was cute including a typical rom-com, music crescendo, big bang moment. (I could just hear it in my head as I was reading it.) I feel like the relationship turned into a relationship when there really was no relationship.... it was basically awkward flirting (in a cute way) and that was it until it was suddenly labeled as boyfriend/girlfriend without even so much as a kiss. It's alright, it worked, I guess. They really aren't supposed to be together at all because of a campus policy of no student/staff relations. Sometimes the writing was a bit clunky and wordy. A few times I had to stop to reread a sentence or paragraph and that is a major pet peeve of mine. Overall, an okay, cute read.
(I received a complimentary copy of this book from Hidden Gems.)
Nothing Ventured is such a fun read. This is my first book by Avery Samson and I am already looking forward to reading more. There are plenty of laugh out loud moments to go with sweet ones. Karlie is sweet and a bit accident prone when it comes to her new apartment. Max has so many sweet moments. He is protective and cannot help to fall for Karlie the moment he sees her. I love the kind of off limits relationship that forms with him working at the college campus and her being a student. They fit so well together. Max and Karlie are so cute together trying to keep the chemistry limited. There is such a sweet build to Max and Karlie's relationship that I just loved. Max and Karlie are fabulous together as they navigate their way through their relationship. I could not put this one down at all. I cannot wait for more New England Romance to come.
Karlie is one of the top Volleyball players at her college. Its her first day back for her Sophmore year. Shes the only roommate that has shown up yet and boy is she shocked at the place they will live. She needs 3 keys just to get from room to room. Now its her first night and shes locked out. So she calls campus police to unlock her door. Max shows up and from that moment he can not get Karlie out of his mind. Shes beautiful, funny and just what he always dreamed of. But problem he works for the university till he heals so so fratinizing with the students. Boy is he going to find that hard when his sister has become friends with Karlie. This book will make you laugh.. I loved every bit of these two characters. And look forward to the next book. I am leaving my voluntary review for a copy of this book I recieved.
This is the first in a new series and what a wonderful beginning this story is! Karlie is a star volleyball player at a small college in New England, and she moved into the last available apartment on campus, but she ends up being locked out on her first night there. With no other options Karlie phones, the campus police for assistance. Max is a police officer who is taking care of his mom and sister and accept the call for assistance. Max comes to Karlie’s aid repeatedly, and the chemistry between them is undeniable. This is a beautifully written story with emotions, family, humor, witty banter, friendships, and is a fun, sweet, and entertaining page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I always highly recommend. I received a free copy of this book via Elle Woods PR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Karlie is the star player on her university volleyball team. Max is taking a year to recover from an injury in the line of duty by taking light duty as a campus police officer. From the moment the two met, when Karlie locked herself out of her room in the off campus housing she's sharing with her friends the sparks fly.
Relationships between campus staff and students is strictly forbidden on the small England Campus that Karlie attends, so the two try to fight their attraction to each other. But Karlie and her friends somehow manage to get themselves into situations, and Max finds himself coming to her rescue on more than one occasion.
I thoroughly enjoyed Karlie spouting random facts every time she's nervous, and I adored Max's family. This is a great start to a new series by a new to me author - and I will definitely be picking up the next book!
On the first night back at college, Karlie locks herself out of her appartment. That's how she meets Max, the police officer who comes to her rescue. The attraction between the two of them is obvious, but will they overcome the obstacles in their way?
This is such a fun, fast-paced NA romance, I really liked it. It is however a very character-driven novel, so keep that in mind while reading this.
Karlie and Max do have a very insta-love attraction, I didn't feel the attraction until after about their third encounter. But once I was past that I just fell in love with them!
Their relationship just made me giggle and really feel for them, which I always love in a book.
Also this is perfect for whenever you're in a reading slump, it'll pull you right out!
I received an ARC for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Karlie’s apartment brought back some vivid memories of my dorm while studying abroad - freaky layout and spooktacular atmosphere. Karlie and her friends are young college students who are living the typical college life - classes and a few parties, meeting new friends and drooling over hot older men.
Max isn’t the typical college campus cop, and he certainly draws the attention of ladies everywhere. I found it sweet how neither Karlie or Max could stay away from each other despite the risk to his position with the campus police. The slow build up to some seriously steamy moments was perfect.
I enjoyed the group of friends Karlie hangs out with and live with her in the apartment. The roommates will likely be the focus of future books which should make for an entertaining series.
I received a free ARC from the author and Hidden Gems; and I am voluntarily leaving an unbiased review.
Karlie & Max * Risking it all for love. * Karlie lives in an old house on campus. One day she locks herself out of her room and Max answers the campus police call. The best decision he ever made at the end of his shift. She is quirky and full of random facts. There is plenty of nipple ring talk. They like each other instantly but since there is no fraternization policy they can't do anything about it. So they sneak around - successfully; until they don't. A love story about risking it all and putting someone else's happiness first no matter how much the consequences hurt you. The book is full of so many funny moments. I enjoyed reading it so much. Super cute and adorable characters. I couldn't put it down and had a stupid smile on my face most of the time. *I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily gave my honest opinion.
This story had a lot of promise. Silly statements come out of Karlie’s mouth frequently. Max is a hot campus cop. The story was just too long with fillers. How many times do we need to know he helped her get her helmet on? Her riding the bus? The two of them meeting for lunch? Her creepy roommate? Both characters were immature. That was okay for the FMC as a sophomore in college but not for a disciplined athlete. He was a campus cop because he was recovering from an injury while undercover. How old is he anyway? He acted like a college kid. I skipped several chapters and found I hadn’t missed anything of importance. As for the ending, they get their HEA but his outcome from his mistakes was too over the top for me. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and BookSirens and was under no obligation to leave a favorable review. All opinions are my own.
I am voluntarily leaving a review after receiving an ARC from Hidden Gems.
It was a cute college romance. Karlie is a sophomore in college and is a star athlete on the University's volleyball team. She just moved into her new student apartment when she accidentally locked herself out. Max is the officer that response to help Karlie. Max new to the Campus Police Force; he just finished an undercover stint with the gang unit. They both are attracted to each other but their relationship is forbidden due to staff/student situation. They do form a friendship but is slowly blurs with a romantic relationship.
I like the author's writing style. The story was easy to follow along. The language used made it easier for me to picture everything in mind like it was a movie.
There was so much to love about this book. It had me hooked from the blurb - a sports romance novel. But what had me one clicking the beejeezus out of this book was that it was the fmc that was the athlete - Karlie. Truthfully I do prefer the mmc to be the sports star, but every now and then I pick up one with a female athlete and I am never disappointed. Max is hands down one of the best characters I have read in recent times. The way he was with Karlie had my heart fluttering. He knew there were obstacles in them being together but he was always there for her and supporting her. This was one great read and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book

This is book 1 in Samson's A New England Romance series. Our main characters are Max and Karlie. Max is a police officer assigned as a campus cop whe Karlie is a student at said college campus and star volleyball player. From day one on campus Karlie needs the assistance of the campus cop and sexy as sin officer Max comes to the rescue… again and again and again.
I adored this wall written romance. These characters, not just our main but also secondary… Karlie's friends and Max's family and others really make this book what it is… fun, sweet and steamy. I loved Karlie's crazy and her factoids were great fun.
Definitely looking forward to reading more!

This was Max & Karlie’s book. It was an enjoyable read. And am voluntarily leaving my review.
College coed Karlie locks herself out of her apartment and meets campus cop Max. A forbidden friendship/ romance develops between them. Max is the hot alpha protector with a meddling mother and sister. Karlie is the athletic coed with meddling roommates that’s a bit awkward. These two had lots of chemistry and lots rom com moments. With roommates and family trying get them together even though it’s forbidden Karlie and Max can’t help but fall for each other. In the end we got some hot sexy times. I did take off a star due to the weird roommate situation that seemed like it was leading somewhere but didn’t.
Karlie is great but Max… Max is what makes this book so amazing!! He comes to her rescue each and every time, despite him knowing that they shouldn't even think about having a relationship. Yet he can't stay away from her and she can't stay away from him! But then he does... until he doesn't and it's a beautiful thing!
A man in a Kevlar vest and tight uniform pants that just show off all of his hotness! He's a family man, completely devoted to his mom and younger sister and he rides a motorcycle! Seriously, I want a Max!!!
