A city on the verge of collapse. Thousands dead or dying. One girl standing at the crossroads of fate.

Leaving behind bright ballroom lights for a blood-soaked battlefield, Jade is on her way to becoming the hero she never wanted to be. Through the portal a city on fire beckons, besieged by a flood of monsters. In a race against time to protect what’s left, her only choice is to fight fae above her magic class and shine a light into the darkness.

As the smoke clears, Jade learns that the Dark One’s monsters weren’t the only thing she should be wary of. Something none of them were expecting slipped through the cracks. If dealing with nobles concerned more about pride than sense wasn’t bad enough, she’ll have to figure out how to handle the existences that could wipe a crumbling city from the map if she’s not careful: baby dragons.

Sometimes, the most dangerous problems fly in on tiny wings.

This is the best book of the series so far! I'm in awe of authors who can pull feelings out of no where just with their words. The betrayal that Jade feels was... *chef's kiss* Brilliant work by Boyce for sure.

It is hard to believe this is book 4 and the MC has only been on this world for a couple of weeks. She has grown so much. I still really like the characters and the writing style. Having the lead character be an 18 year old young woman but also be super OP on this world is unique in the genre. It is refreshing and her idiosyncrasies are sweet. I know a grown man using sweet in a sentence. What's up with that? What can I say, she is sweet. So far in the previous 3 books things have pretty much gone well for the MC and the people around her. That changes in this book. She starts to find out some of her limitations and starts to come into contact with beings that are more powerful. She makes some mistakes which leads to some problems. Overall I really like the series and am looking forward to the next one.

We're shown some of the limits to the MC during book #4. While Jade continues to be generally an overpowered character, she starts abutting into the powerhouses of the world she has been portaled to, finally leading to some pretty organic conflict.

Ultimately, a lot happens in this book, but nothing much as changed overall between the end of the last book and this one, in regards to the greater threat.

Let's see what book #5 brings along.

Book four

Mistakes: I didn't find anything wrong with this book. It's well written and edited.

Plot: Save a city from a monster invasion and then deal with dragons.

Characters: I liked that the dragons are arrogant and full of themselves.
Jade is why I follow this series. I have seen reviews and comments about her being to good to be true. Thing is, I think those that say that don't really know anyone with a serious disability.
I have found that there are only three types of people when it comes to folks that have major disabilities. First are those that are always angry. Second are those that fall into addiction, be it drugs, alcohol, or religion. Third are those that bury their pain and anger and try to always make others feel better and try to make the world around them a better place.
I think Jade falls into the third category.

10/10 I will keep on following.

bad attitude but good results

The book really deserves something like 4.4 stars, but the main characters attitude is annoying. I’m glad that we have a main character who doesn’t pander to those around her but she sticks up for herself in a very bratty way. It’s interesting that she preaches communication to everyone and yet is wholly unyielding with her own opinions and talks down to everyone around her. She literally lacks respect for anyone and the culture she finds herself in. The author tries to act like because her underlying principles are “good” that she can talk to any body any old way. While she needs a major attitude check, I much prefer this competent character which is actually fairly rare to find in a lot of books today. Honestly just the fact that it’s female led and doesn’t have significant romance makes it a breath of fresh air.

It's still good enough to make the long wait time between books to be a something to be checking for the next one constantly, but has a few not so much holes as just down points?

Like she rails against the system at times but also seems to just let people walk over her at others? Such as not standing up when a noble tried to strike a commoner and they hit back and got in trouble for it? Think she'd make a bigger deal about that and make it clear nobles are there to protect commoners and if they strike one, it should be a huge crime against them, not the commoner.

Of course, she is a teenager and still finding herself, while also her place in the world and how she wants to be, so it's understandable too. Though the whole only two weeks thing does make it all seem a bit rushed. Like shows up, and two weeks later is a master in magic and tons of skills? She is like " I've had summoning power for awhile now" literally...a week. That's not awhile. Again teenager, so maybe a week feels like forever but it does come off as a bit ...silly.

Then there is the damage spirit part. She can't figure out how to heal it? Really? She's seen blending of magic. Hell she got healed in another part by a mix of creation and healing magic and she mixes magic all the time. Come on! She isn't even going to try the simple, mixing spiritual magic with creation magic, or with healing magic, or all three? Mix them and then try, not just pure spiritual magic and give up, tried everything. SOOO frustrating. Like she can do tons of stuff like making magic mirrors, memory crystals, Create a freaking TREE and new fruit out of another seed but can't seem to try to mix her magics which she does all the time, when healing spirit instead of body? Really!

Okay so that really is the only big points, At times she seems to cave to the nobles and way of life, some times she stands up against it. She is super great with magic, except when the plot requires her not to be. She comes up with a system to balance power so no one is in charge of too much, then gives all the power to one person , well most of it.

So minor annoyances, not really flaws or plot holes but annoyances. Hopefully the next book comes out soon and after she's had some time to SLEEP on it, she'll think of the super easy solution and fix herself and go on with the plot. Not having books of her being disabled, she was disabled for seventeen years of her life, please please don't make her suffer through this new one partially disabled for a whole book or more until she comes up with the super easy solution.

Still good, but...

The first 3 books were full of action, new things, new places. This one is full of Jade... thinking. The entire book takes place in 2 days, with a lot of meandering "how am I going to single handedly fix the world".
I enjoyed that there were repercussions to Jade acting like a spoiled brat for a change, hopefully this will start a new era of emotional intelligence for her :)

I'm still enjoying the series, but a return to the pacing of the first 3 books would be a relief.

I was on my way out of this series anyway, but I really don't remember the writing being so convoluted in previous books. Every sentence is overly long with poor chronology and tons of telling, telling, and telling rather than anything actually doing. But even when things happen, it's described passively and aimlessly rather than to the point and with clarity.

The tone of this book also gives the impression that this series is only entering the second act of the overall story and there's no way I'm hanging around for that many more books. I could barely hang around for 10% of this one before packing things up.

Not what I was expecting

I appreciate that the author wanted to show that Jade wasn't infallible but for my taste it went a bit too far. I liked reading this series because it didn't have the same cliche problems that others did, but now it does. I will still look forward to the next one.

Not the best

I was really looking forward to this book, but I am left feeling very disappointed. It feels like 50% of the book was spent on bonding butterflies. Nothing really changed for Jade. Barely any real growth until the very end. The book was very flat almost monotone in story telling.

Excellent but short

This is an excellent book but feels a bit shorter than the others. The author well and truly communicates the rise and fall of emotions. Infatuation and betrayal Being high on the list In this book. The depth at which they are conveyed seems almost personal for the author. I truly hope she finds catharsis in this story telling. As usual the Protagonist jade is fun and quirky and eternally curious. All animal traits and fun to follow. In this book however her OP Nature does finally meet it's Match, albeit temporary I hope. This particular book doesn't show much of the future as far as the series goes but hints at a much more complex then was illustrated in the past. I think the author took time to make some minor corrections in her universe as well as paving the way for some New discoveries in the future. As far as Jade has come, in such a short time, she still has a long way to go. Is the future of her power gonna be only personal growth or is she going to figure out how to share and empower those around her. If she does not Then the advances she has made will die with her As no one else has her unique abilities. For her gifts to the world to truly stick They must be Made such that that humans can advance and continue her work. I certainly look forward to more books in the series hopefully the author is back in the groove. That would be good for everyone.

Jade is beyond bed-ridden in our world; she has spent most of her life in a hospital room. At the start of this series (Siphon) she finds herself in another world. It's a pretty-standard LitRPG world. People get notices telling them that their strength has gone up to 11 or that they can now play the ukulele at the beginner level. But she has a non-standard advantage: She can siphon off a small fraction of other people's abilities. (The siphonees benefit, so ethical problems are limited.) By the end of book 3 she has super-human abilities across the board.

Book 3 ends on a cliff-hanger, and it's been a long wait. Worth the wait: If you enjoyed the first three books, you'll enjoy the fourth. Yes, I enjoyed the first three books considerably. If you enjoy LitRPG - literature set in role-playing-game-style milieus - this is a superior instance. (If you dislike such books, why would you read a review of book 4 in a series? If you're new to the subgenre, Siphon or the author's recent Lotus Lake are good places to start.) The series leans heavily towards the wish-fulfillment-fantasy side of the spectrum - but that's okay.

Insight resolves the cliff-hanger left from book 3. I'd like to see some of the dangling plot threads addressed in a book5, but it would not be unfair for the author to leave us here.

I had a harder time with this one. The more I read about her the more I don't understand Jade. She's happy go lucky until she's not. Her ability to just fade off in thought and forget her surroundings for half a chapter is a literary annoyance. Mainly because half the stuff she expounds upon in her mental forays is things she can't actually accomplish in the just 2 weeks sense she's been there. Going off on mental tangents so long even me as the reader is a little flabbergasted in some of the jumps she makes. She's very overwhelmed by the end of the story and I found myself upset with her reaction to the dragons at the end because of it. I understood her logic, I still didn't like the fact they had helped her and she just flat cut things. No wiggle room at all. No benefit of the doubt. It was, nope. Sorry. Your mom sucks, I'm out. This book is also just 2 days. The other 3 books span over 2 weeks and this whole book is just over 2 full days. Even she complains about not having enough time. And something is off about the timing. How long were people there just waiting for her to wake up? And why weren't they informed that she might just be to busy to mingle while unconscious from being healed by dragons. Who cares, they can wait. She'll pick things up from where she left off when she wakes up.

Insight (A Touch of Power #4)
by Jay Boyce
I read this book out of order, starting with the 4th in the series, yet I am entranced by the series. Its a book related to rpg, or choose your own adventure books but has its own mythology, and ideology.
This book starts after enormous events in proper books, yet the reader can become involved with the story with out reading the prior books.
The ideas of illness, magic, and self sacrifice are woven through the pages. Showing the extreme of all these things, both for the light and the darkness. The reader will feel a direct connection with Jade. A human girl taken to another world where magic is real, spirits are real, fairies fly, and dragons rule. She acquires powers and abilities that are enhance with every thing or person she comes into contact with. Her personal story pulls at the readers heartstrings, her courage pulls at their spirit, and her failures bring the reader to an understanding that we all make mistakes its what we do afterward that maters. Teaching young students that no one is too powerful, that no one has the right to overlook others, and everyone is held accountable for their actions. A great story for bringing not only imagination, and "girl" power, but life lessons that make a larger impression.

I love the series!

I absolutely fell in love with this series from the beginning! However, as I've reread I've noticed little things that just made it not quite as amazing as I originally thought. With this fourth book I feel as if those little things have become major wholes in the storyline. Jay Boyce has does a great job with the pop vulture references and I enjoy knowing that we have read the same books. Though, if you compare this series to some of those great books you start to see major differences. This book is amazing and I see a vast amount of potential for the series as well as the author. I can't wait wo read more of her works but I'm sad to day that this book was lacking a bit for me. I am hopeful that the next book will smooth out things better. If I was to actually say anything vonstructive for the author I would suggest she reread some of the books that she reference to get ideas on how to better flesh out her characters and the MC. Honestly though her style is amazing and while she seeks to improve I truly hope she keeps her voice.

Fantastic Read

I love this series!!!

One caveat - 4th book does not reintroduce characters/plot/abilities so read 1st book first!

I love the main character. She tries so hard to be optimistic even in bad situations. Some misfortunes should be enough to break her, but she keeps moving forward. A survivor instead of a victim. She admits her weaknesses and overcomes them. Yes, it can be a little cheesy, but personally, I am tired of grimdark situations, where the author makes the main character go through tragedy repeatedly to show "real" stakes.

First, the story revolves around a monster invasion and its aftermath, before transitioning to the arrival of a new power source/teacher/love interest.

All four books take place in roughly 16 days. I would understand if it felt rushed, but instead, it feels natural to the story's progression.

I highly recommend this series if you want a main character who gets unbelievable chances with believable consequences in an interesting fantasy world.

A favorite of favorites, superb story telling

I think I have read thousands of books, certainly more than I can remember in one sitting, and many have certain things in common. The ones written with the most talent usually introduce values that are presumably the author's with just enough connection to the ideal story resolution that the story feels like the author is trying to convince the reader to have the same values. The stories with no obvious values typically have no obvious talent either. The A Touch of Power books have values, but they are not tied to a happy ending like a persuasive piece, but instead are tied to moments of conflict or stress. This story feels more real because of this and because of the many simple truths explained or simply not ignored.

Previous books left much to look forward to, while this one could easily be the final book for either the whole series or just special focus. If Jay Boyce has got it in her, I would love to read more to come from this series or her other (Lotus Lake?).

fun

Jade was stupendous in the book she had some ups and downs I think she learned a good bit. She finds a romantic interest she suffers through battle she makes new friends experiences new things and comes to face to face with a force she cannot be late it.

The storytelling is excellent the flow is great. The MC still kind of reads as an ugly American character in that her way is the only way and why can’t people see that it is the right way. She often does not seem to even want to know about the local culture, traditions, and mannerisms , but rather demands that people conform to hers. This is kind of made it clear when you see her experience her first crush and loss in the book and fills its effects, because she falls hard and fast and what normally happens with that happens. Even with all this it is still a good read it is wonderful captivating and just a good time, I hope you enjoy it.

So Good

Once again Ms. Boyce has written not just a wonderful book ,but something more. I am an avid reader I haven't had many opportunities in the past to indulge in this, however I am now in a position to be able to do so now. I read anywhere from three to five books in a week. From the moment I began reading this story I haven't wanted to stop so I didn't . Here it is two and a half days later and I am finished with this the forth book. I Want More.
I cannot express to anyone who reads reviews before deciding on a book to select this series. I Love the whole premise for the storyline. As I mentioned I am an avid reader and its not often that one comes across a book that captures your imagination from the beginning. I admit I was intrigued from the blurb however once again I admit to being enthralled in the story from the first prologue. Read the series it's worth it and I believe like me you'll end up buying it. 😁

The town is under attack! The reports are bad. Monsters of all types are inside attacking the citizens. Jade and soldiers go through the portal to save the town. What she finds after the dust settles is something that she has dreamed about since waking up in this world. Dragonlings!

Jade has had a long few weeks. The wonder of being in a new world with a healthy body and magic and friends. All the while, this amazing new world is filled with monsters that would gladly kill her and all of her new friends. She needs a break and meeting these dragons could be exactly what she needs. This story does an amazing job with showing the difference between the mindset of dragons and humans.

great fourth book

Okay it’s clear that Jade is entering into a different level right from the start. Overall this is a solid book linking the earlier three to the next set of three.
It spends a lot of time going over a series of interviews and introducing some new characters. Foreshadowing some concepts that are going to come back later in the series I’m sure.

For me personally it seemed really rushed at the start and end, with a lot of padding in the middle. Time doesn’t move much in this book with it happening over the course of just 1-2 days.

That said it leaves us ready for a romping ride back through Dracona in the next books.

Will wait clicking the refresh page for the real ease date of the next one.

Another great read!

This series is a wonderful, entertaining light read. The main character is very OP but the story really helps to support it. The author has done an impressive job of balancing the MC well. She's young, a bit naive and innocent but growing. You see hints of the selfishness and greed you might expect of a young person finding their way, along with honor and justice. Yet life and her experiences find her having to adjust her expectations.
It's a bit of a younger read for me but I truly appreciate a well crafted story, and this is surely it. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Fun read

Comming of age story for a teen girl finding her way in a magical world. It helps that she received a unique power to siphon magic and abilities from living things she has touched. In this installment the has her 1st crush, followed by a heartbreak. Yet all is not lost as in life there is often a dream or desire, then a struggle to overcome obstacles, and hopefully a reward or at least a resolution. The obstacles keep coming, but there are also joyful experiences as well. This is a refreshing and enjoyable LitRPG away from the abundance of male dominated harem fare in the genre.

exceptional series

Adventure, discovery, familial type relationships, depth of supporting characters, relatable main character, … I cannot say enough about this series, author, or narrator (excitedly awaiting audio version!). While the main character is overpowered she is balanced by her own unique frailties. She is uncommonly wise but makes uncommon mistakes stemming from her past. An amazing read and listen! Read each book at least once and listened to them all three to five times! Highly recommended for anyone looking for a series ( litrpg or not) full of wonder and adventure and so much more!
The only thing I dislike about this series is waiting on the next one!

If you like MCs who are recruited from a dying situation to a better life, this is your series!

Jay Boyce continues a great series in this 4th book. There are some interesting twists and turns as well as some frustrating circumstances. Heartaches occur, especially from the perspective of an 18-year-old young lady who, prior to her arrival in this new world, had been a lifetime, bedridden, dying young girl. She continues to discover and explore her magic and grow her friendships.
Unfortunately for me, I've breezed through the 1st four books, and I have no idea when book five is coming out. 😢 I'll be looking forward to it ... a lot! Keep up the great work!

Fighting, Dragons, Sunshine, and so much food

So happy I reread the series recently, so I could appreciate the book starting mid fight. I spent my day reading with pausing and rushing back as I had to know what happened next. And then it was over, I still have questions from the last book that weren't answered and more questions from this one, but I am happy not having a cliffhanger. Just possibilities for more. Enjoyed appendix on Google docs even if it alphabetical by first name.

amazing

After reading this book the Touch of Power series is still one of my favorites. Jade lives so much and burns so brightly in the few weeks she has been able to walk and live that it’s inspiring. This series either always has a stupid grin on my face or has my actually crying over the difficulties Jade has over come. There is one point in the book where she exclaims something so enthusiasticly that it left me in tears for about a half hour after the event. The perfect mix of slice of life and action. I can’t wait for more.

Great

This is one of those series which caused me to fall in love with the genre. I love the characters of the story I love the interactions the sense of wonder the main character brings to everything, this book really played up on some of the typical misconceptions that would happen in the situation that's described. All this really hard to write without giving anything away I hate doing spoilers. Anyway I love this series I can't wait for more and I hope it continues for quite some time. Really can't wait.

Insight is the fourth book in the A Touch of Power series. This is not a standalone book and this series definitely needs to be read in order. Go start with book #1, Siphon. You can thank me later.

We continue in Jade's epic adventures as she keeps growing in power and influence in her new world. She meets new monsters and new races and has to make determinations about old friends that she learns new facts about and about new friends that she learns aren't what she hoped. Is book 5 here yet?!?

It's been a wait, but it was worth it.

The author writes with such fluidity that it becomes second nature to identify with the MC. Therefore it's jarring in a good way when you stop to think why is the MC doing this or acting this way? Then it hits you it's because the MC is acting like a previously very sheltered teenage girl, not a fourty year old sheetmetal worker. This is the brilliance of the author. Amazing story about people in a fantasy world, not caricatures that highlight the background.
