I reviewed the actual Confronting Jesus separately. This is just for the study guide.

It’s only 62 pages- 10 reflection questions per chapter with space to write. It’s helpfulness depends on the type of reader you are. I didn’t find most of the questions particularly thought-provoking, but if you plan to read this book with a group, it would be good to have some conversation starters. Many of the questions are answered in the book and the questions provide the corresponding page numbers.

It would also be good if writing helps you think through material or remember what you've read.

I would not say this is necessary to get the most out of the book. It's really a preference thing. Personally, I didn't feel like it added a whole lot, but it may be worth it for others.

This companion guide to Confronting Jesus: 9 Encounters with the Hero of the Gospels includes reflection questions for each chapter from the original book. Each section begins with a question based on the chapter's content, and most of the other questions share Scripture references for the reader to look up, read, and respond to. These prompts are mainly targeted towards someone who doesn't already know Jesus or the gospels well, and who would be dealing with cognitive dissonance between their current beliefs and what they're reading.

Although I found the original book insightful and broadly applicable to people of different backgrounds, this study guide is very basic. People who already know Jesus and the gospels well won't find anything especially new or striking here, and this is mainly for people who are new to faith or considering Jesus for the first time. Personally, I didn't get much out of it, especially since most of the passages I read for this study guide were already covered in the original book or even quoted in full there. This could be helpful for a book club, helping people remember key ideas and jot down things to discuss, but it would be an unnecessary expense for most readers.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through Amazon Vine in exchange for an honest review.
