Trixie Towers #4

Beasts and Baubles

Rate this book
Seven tears, seven years.
Heave-ho, swelled fears.
Coaxing the abyss,
Not all is clear.

Where topside is down,
Hold tight to the crown.
Savage tides still hunt,
Round, round, round...

I’m having feelings. For the King of Shifters.
How in the realm did that happen? He may be my soul mate, but he is still my enemy. Granted, he’s a fine specimen of male flesh...but he’s still my enemy.

With the five kingdoms in crisis and new visitors knocking on our door, the rulers and I are up to our Fae damned eyeballs in stress. And...did I mention the feelings already? It deserves repeating.

Our quest this time? The Merfolk Kingdom.
The stakes? Our lives. Our realm. Our people.

But, in the end, who is really playing whom?

My name is Trixie Towers. I’m the heir to the Elf Kingdom. My father is nosy and my soul mate is a beast. And I’m beginning to believe it should be that way.
Yes, I said that, Fae. King Athon is mine!

Oh look, the release is scheduled for June 23021. Guess I’ll have to wait 263 lifetimes for this book.

I bet it’ll still be delayed.

August 17, 2020
I’m getting real tired of the constant disappointment. I get that authors have a life outside of writing and sometimes said life can have problems. Writing is obviously not gonna be a priority and it sucks for the readers but it’s understandable and totally okay. What is not okay, however, is stringing along those loyal readers for months on end with no fixed date and constantly pushing back the deadline when convenient. The credibility of the author is jeopardized to the point that the constantly shifting release date is making me lose interest.

I almost didn’t notice that “June” turned into “July”.

What Scarlett Dawn pushed back a release date Again? Shocker!
I really like this series, but I can no longer count the number of times I've added a book release of hers to my calendar, head straight over to get it on the release date and surprise surprise, it's disappeared, only to find out later that it's been pushed back a month, over and over again.
I congratulate her on not only her ability to write, but the fact that she is doing it! It's so easy to sit back and say meet your deadlines when I myself have never had to actually write or publish a book.
But there is a level of credibility and respect to be lost for an author who makes promises (which in essence a release date is) only to break them time and again.
I feel it would be much better for all parties if she just didn't give a release date until the book was actually ready to be published. Have it ready to go, then do some marketing and advertising to build up excitement for a couple weeks, then release it.
Key Phrase: It's always better to under-promise and Over-deliver rather than the opposite.

Talk about your first-world problems. I can't believe all the complaints about the author's release dates. Get a grip on reality.

The minute an author releases a new book readers are clamouring for the release date of the next book in the series. So, to keep readers pacified, the author provides a date for the next book—and bear in mind, that next book might not even be fully outlined yet, never mind written, revised and copyedited.

If the author does not provide a date for the next book, readers get mad.
If the author provides a date that is more than year ahead, readers get mad.
If the author misses the original date provided, readers get mad.

Like jesus, check yourselves. The author owes you nothing. You are not entitled to know when the next book comes out, you have no right to rush their creative process. Sometimes creativity flows naturally, and other times it doesn't. The author may pick a date based on how long it took to write one book, and find the next book takes twice the time or less than half—that's part of their own, personal creative process and may or may not be dependent on other factors in their life like a job, family, whatever. As readers you demanded the author provide a release date. Don't rage at the author if that date turns out to be impossible to meet. Don't rage if the author realizes that the next book is going to take more than a year to finish. I mean, what do you expect? The author to release a crappy unedited version of the book just to meet a certain date?

Ask yourself how readers knew what their favourite authors were writing (and when it was going to be released) twenty years ago. Right... Without social media (or even a website) readers just waited to see when the local bookstore or library posted a printed list of 'what's coming next month' on the bulletin board. Just because you can now interact with authors and check your goodreads list for the next book's release date doesn't mean you are now somehow entitled to share your angry thoughts with them. They are not writing for YOU they are writing for themselves and sharing their work with the world. They do not have to share it; they choose to and you should count your lucky stars that they do!

Readers are not clients and authors are not copywriters. They are artists. You can commission a copywriter to write you a book and have an expected delivery date. You can even tell them you require a character named Sparkle that shape-shifts into a unicorn. It'll cost you about $100/hour though, so I hope you ask your favourite authors how many hours they put into an average novel. I expect you'll pay upwards of $5,000 for your book delivered on the date you asked for. Then, if that commissioned work is not delivered on time or Sparkle doesn't fart rainbows like you wanted her to, you can go ahead and complain that the writer didn't deliver on what was expected.

It's really here! Beasts & Baubles is out and it is excellent!

To new readers: This is book 4 in an incomplete serial. It doesn't stand alone, and the books should be read in order for maximum enjoyment, so take yourself on over to Marvels and Misfits. If you're early on in the series and are on the fence of whether to continue, keep going! Each book builds and improves on the rest.

For readers who are mad about all the delays on this book, I hear you. My complete frustration with the constant last minute release date changes are a main factor in why I dropped a star. But if you've waiting this long and are still curious on the book, you don't want to miss out. I loved the relationship growth between Trixie and Athon as well as the interactions with King Traevon, and even the other rulers.

There is a slight cliffhanger ending that might bother some, but I just consider it as setting the stage for book 5

Worth the wait...

I am still really enjoying this series and glad that Beasts and Baubles finally came out. When the release was cancelled, I was concerned that it wouldn't just be a delay. Thankfully, they're all back and lovable, funny and crazy as always.

Honestly, I think it's time for their relationship to not be a secret. I get why they are keeping it private but I want to see them openly affectionate to each other.

I will definitely be going on with this series.

I think I'm going to have to come back in a couple of years or something :(

It's sad, but at this point I don't know. I've reread the series I don't how many times in preparation for the release that never was.

I need to cut myself cold turkey. I literally can't stop looking at this page and facebook to see what's happening with this book.

I give up.

At this point it's excuse after excuse why this author keeps stringing us readers along. The release date has changed like 6+ times now? How can you say it'll be out by the end of the week and then a week later be like, "oh by the end of the month." Then at the end of the month give another fake date and rinse and repeat.

I'm done.

It feels like I have been waiting forever to read this book. Glad it finally got released.

As usual it is a very short book and the main characters don't really spend a lot of time together. I read the other books as a refresher and it is a rather normal trend. They spend more time with the other royals due to the calamity that is about to befall their kingdom.

I wanted to see what the wave of magic their kissed caused but that was not addressed in the entire book. I wish the books were longer just so the MCs can be together without someone else barging in.

I am so disappointed that this book seems to be a never ending issue. The date of publishing the book were:

(i) July 2020 - it was then delayed
(ii) New Date 31 December - it was then delayed
(iii) New Date 3 January 2021 - nope
(iv) End of January 2021 - nope
(v) First Week of February - nope

Now it is complete silence no idea when it will be done. Sometimes I wonder why I start reading series that are not complete. I remember the last time I was waiting for a Sylvia Day book that was delayed for 1 year and that was the last book I read of hers.

So upshot is I am looking for another completed series or book to read. No cliffhangers not interested in waiting forever

Part I: Review

I couldn’t help it. I wanted to pace myself and wait until more time had passed because who knows if I have to wait another two years for the next book to come out but here I am, having finished reading the book two days after its release.

I’m gonna say this over and over again in my reviews for this series but I’m loving the relationship development of Trixie and King Athon.

Someone tell me, how did they become so cute? Seriously, how did this happen? He finds her adorable and she thinks he’s handsome now. I- 🥺
“You snore so handsome, and your face is dreadful.” – Trixie to Athon
“I think your drooling is beautiful and your face is annoying.” – Athon to Trixie

They actively seek each other out for comfort and are so soft with each other. It makes me all mushy inside. They haven’t lost their snark though, I guess it’s just called banter now? 😏

Looking forward to book five!

Part II: Book talk, best to be read after finishing the book (SPOILERS!)

King Traevon descubriendo que Trixie y Athon son mates es el punto cúspide de este libro and I looooooved it. 🤩

There she is. That was my bitch soul mate.

I live for this series!!!

I have waited for this forever and no matter if I got frustrated waiting, felt restless after reading it or reading the bad reviews this book received, I'm still going to give it five stars. I'm so invested in this series and in Athon and Trixie that I will literally read anything to do with them and give it five stars. This mated pair has stolen my mind, heart and soul. I have read this series so many times and can still continue to read it over and over again.

I was just so giddy and felt swoony reading this book. I just about died every time Athon and Trixie showed affection. And it happend a lot. Gah! Imagine how dead dead I would be right now!? I craved their affectionate and soft side. I-no lie-read those parts over and over again. My heart felt so full and happy! And don't get me started on Athon being jealous and possessive. It was so freaking sexy and hot that I melted. I was a gooey puddle on the floor. I lived for this book!

But why oh why did it have to be so short. My heart couldn't handle that. I couldn't wait to read this book and flew through it and now I'm left devastated that it's finished. And the Louie's... They were so cute in this book. I am truly fond of them!!!

Oh, and what happend to the white butterfly. I was waiting for it to be mentioned. Does it have something to do with the Fae or is it a Fae. So many questions running through my mind.
Now the excruciating wait begins. I am already missing everyone in this book. They brought me so much love and laughter.

Maybe it is just me, but this book did a terrible disservice to an installment that was, generally good. I am not saying that this was a to-die-for series. But it was a fun one. It kept your interest without being necessarily a page-turner. What I am trying to get at is that the series comprised of the first three books was pretty good, it hooked me up, and I was waiting for the fourth one to be the cherry on the top. It so was not

I am trying to keep my review as composed as possible, because I don`t want to annoy the author.I really like her writing style and I am eager for new books from her. But this one disappointed me. The voice of Trixie was just not there. She seemed so detached from all that was happening around her. I felt her relationship with the shifter king to be there just for the sake of being. Their sex life did not spark passion as the writing did not dwell on emotions.

I mean, the only thing that was happening in this book was that Trixie had to deal with her crazed libido. The signs were everywhere. Especially with the obvious symbol of the sex books: Flower of Fertility book and the Seed of Creation book that were considered key elements in the plotline. For example, consider the following conversation that played out between Trixie and her mate/partner. They both were suffering from being in heat and wanted to mate as fast as possible. The cause of that was thought to be a faulty interpretation of the two books put side by side (This is Trixie`s PoV): “I opened the FLOWER OF FERTILITY book to its first page and rubbed at my eyes. “Elf, my balls have been hurting me since this morning. So I’m guessing you’re not the only one who’s going to die soon if we don’t figure this out, so start reading, too.” Princess Trixie sniffed down her nose at me, but, smartly, she did open the SEED OF CREATION book and started reading immediately. “How badly do they hurt?” Did I mention how much I hated that he was referring to her as “Elf”, but in this weird way that it make it seem like she was some strange entity.

And this was just in the first few pages of the book. Because of course, things got increasingly worse by the page. At some point I could not take it anymore. I am not a prude. Heck, I am all for erotica, but in here it got to a point the lovemaking parts got to be ridiculously portrayed. So, there is a part where Trixie`s father announced to her that she should immediately run because she is in heat (aka “in great need of sex”). She should run directly to the shifter king to take care of her problem. It`s weird. She was in the middle of a conference with the other heads of the kingdoms and she just sprung from there to run. And hot on her heels is the shifter king that WAS ALSO at that conference. For some reason they have to go all the way back to his kingdom to have sex—why couldn`t they have found a nearby room? Even on the grass in the yard would have seemed more sensible at that point. And why, in the name of all, is her father the one that has to “encourage” her?!

“Fly straight to the Shifter Kingdom, Trixie. Do you understand?”
“I need to go back inside,” I snarled down at him and tried to wiggle out of his grip. “Unhand me.”
“You are in heat,” he snapped sternly. “Do you understand what I’m saying?”
I halted in place and looked down at my hands.
Red. My hands were red. “Oh, no.”
This was dreadful timing. The worst timing.
Then a ferocious roar vibrated inside the castle.”

Almost nothing happened in this book. Nothing at all. Maybe just that Trixie's father learned that she is . Which seemed to have went MUCH better than we had been lead to believe it would.

And another thing: Why did they have to make all that exploration into the mermaids` world?
I thought it will be a think-for-one moment in the plot/one event not in the entire book. I don't have enough adjectives to describe how little f$&@ I gave on what was happening in the world of a queen that neither is she the protagonist, nor related to the main character (by blood or by circumstances), nor her partner. Especially because the lead (main character) could not care less about this mermaid queen and the sea world she ruled over

Overall? Not a great book, folks. I am not recommending it. How could I? I barely could finish it. And I really liked the first three.

Highly anticipated and well-delivered

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or you’re new to this series, you already know how long this book release has taken. It happens. It’s the nature of the creative process - it can’t be forced.

Out of the many authors I consistently read, Scarlett is the best. She is the best for a reason, and I am grateful that she didn’t try to rush the process and put out a substandard book. Just… maybe, next time, don’t keep making promises to your readers. Waiting is one thing, building up only to be let down is a different animal altogether.

This story arc progression is right in line with the previous books in the series, both the main characters and the the side characters are amazing, and now we have a villain. It just keeps getting better.

I’ve seen the term cliffhanger mentioned a few times, and honestly it’s not as brutal as everyone keeps implying. Don’t be scared to go ahead and dive in.

Alas, I've apparently hit my limit with this series. It's a shame I couldn't have come to that realization two years ago so I could've skipped the years of bait-and-switch release date shenanigans... but it is what it is. This'll be the last Trixie Towers book I read, I think.

First, to address the elephant in the room: I'll admit that I've been one of the readers disenchanted with Scarlett Dawn after she repeatedly lied about the release date for this book. To be clear, it's not the length of time that bothers me -- I'm actually quite patient and content to wait as long as it takes when it comes to new books in a series I'm enjoying -- but I am bothered by the outright lying to fans, over and over again, without so much as a simple apology or explanation. Still, I put those frustrations aside when I finally got around to picking up this book, and I was genuinely excited to pick this back up and see if it ended up being worth the wait.

It was not.

There's been a trend in my reviews over the course of this series, as I've slowly found certain shenanigans less amusing and more annoying. Apparently we've finally reached the tipping point, because I couldn't stand most of the characters for the majority of the book. A good 75% of this installment is just absurd stupidity. At one point in my life I found Trixie to be over the top but at least amusing in her irreverence, but this? Throughout this book, we're subjected to page after page of full-grown adults acting like absolute idiots. We've reached the point of rulers of entire kingdoms making jokes about toilet humor as if they're particularly unruly seven-year-old boys. Ugh.

I found myself begging for this book to be over as soon as it started, so utterly obnoxious did I find each and every character right from the start... though I will admit when we finally got to the plot of this little chapter in the Trixie Towers saga, I didn't completely hate it. That alone earns the book two stars instead of fewer, though it should be noted that the plot was barely-there, full of holes as always, and really not enough to save the day this time around. It might've helped had Dawn woven in literally any reminders about what was going on in the story -- there's not even the slightest hint of one, which is an incredibly bold move by an author who should know it's been years since the vast majority of her readers have touched one of these books -- but even this, I fear, likely wouldn't have changed my overall opinion.

Last book, I thought maybe it was me that was growing tired of the series, that I was the one changing, while the books remained the same. This time, I feel confident in saying that whether or not I am also changing, the series sure as hell has, too, and not for the better. These books have descended into idiocy, and I, for one, do not wish to follow them any further. I'm taking my leave while I still can. Good luck to those who choose to stay; I hope the next installment(s), should they ever come, are far better than this one.

Re-read again March 2022. 1st time was for pleasure, 2nd time for clues...

Wow, waited 2 years for this one. I am happy its here and loved it but just like I thought, it leaves me wanting more. There are just some authors that you are willing to wait for and buy their books as they are released, SD is one of those for me.

We pick up where Trixie has eaten the "you know what" and gets a warning about the seed of creations books- so she heads off to Athon where we get an unexpectedly tender moment. Not sure why they let Bishop stay there...

Anyway, they proceed with the next step which causes major trouble in the Land and eventually outs them to Trixie's dad. Relief that he knows! Because the next several interactions around others could have been disastrous if the King hadn't covered for them.

I do feel bad for Caspian, Trixie was such a part of his life in so much they would share a bed (sleeping). He has to be feeling the loss, right?? I did notice some inconsistencies here and there and mayhap they say "mayhap" too many times, but I loved it anyway.

Lots of great moments but my favorite? When Trixie smoked the Caster cigar and ended up high as a kite, singing to herself. The phrases out of her mouth were masterful. And I love that Athon and Trixie are not fighting their soul mate status and just growing closer. They can "hate" each other in public but it doesn't seem to carry over in the bedroom! Yummy.

I think I will read this one again, I am not ready to leave this world quite yet.

Finally !!! *introducing chorus of angels ahhh sound effects*

So I had to reread all the previous books since it's been so long that I didn´t remember half of what happened, and it was almost like the first time, loved it! and laughed and read the entire series in no time at all, sadly... so keep them coming!

Well Scarllet Dawn is one of my favorite authors (maybe the favorite...) and highly recomend this series.
Just please, don´t take so long in the next books since they are so small, and I read them so fast, it feels like an eternity if I have to wait 2 years again.

I just re-read the 3 previous books in anticipation of this one coming out (hopefully soon!). I literally love anything this author writes and will wait in eager anticipation for anything she chooses to release - however long it may take (very impatiently, but I’ll wait lol). Now I’m gonna go re-read the forever evermore series so I can impatiently wait for the next in that series too :)

Just finished this book, aaaaaaaargh how am I ever going to make it to when the next one comes out??!!! So so good as always 🙌🏽🔥

mixed feeling (READ THIS)

I’m giving 5 stars for this because I really love Dawn’s story telling - and I love this series, and want to support it’s continuation. For those that are new to the Trixie Towers series, in between books 3 & 4, Dawn had a major life event that meant she just needed to be human for a while and take care of herself. It meant that there was nearly 2 years of wait for this book to come out. That builds a lot of expectation.

I won’t lie and say I thought this book was worth 2 years of wait. It was emphatically NOT. But had this book come released on the original publication date? I would’ve given it 5 stars. I haven’t been the most patient Scarlett Dawn fan; more often I’ve felt more frustrated than understanding - but she is human just like us, and life threw her a curve ball, and I’m not so lost in my indignation to acknowledge that she followed up on her commitment to write us another installment even though it was hard and she received a lot of flack (from myself included).

For that, I proudly give her 5 stars. Thanks for sticking with it and not abandoning the series Scarlett Dawn. I’m so excited to see where you take it. I do hope the next book is longer though haha.

So worth the wait!

What a change from book 1 til now!! Watching Trixie and King Athon grow as a couple is a total treat!! I could read about them for days and days!!
As others of said, yeah, this was super short but what we did get was captivating and story advancing. No lull to be had, just flowed and advanced the story immensely!
I gobble up anything Scarlet Dawn and am so very happy to see her persevering over all the things happening in her life the past few years. This is a great accomplishment and feat! Cheers to Scarlet AND to us for finally getting our next chapter in the awesome Trixie world. I cannot wait for the next one even though I know there aren’t plans for it to be written right away, it will be like Christmas, when it happens? It will be a gift!
