Years ago we read Emotionally Healthy ... Discipleship? Church? By this author, as suggested by our marriage counselor. It's about being "reparented by the church" and had a significant impact on my thinking. I enjoyed the audio version of this book as well but I think I would love it a thousand times more in print, with all the resources in front of me. I love Scazzero and his wife's heart and ministry, and I hope to read more of their work - and be changed by it - going forward. This was intensely practical -- such a gift to the Christian community who needs tools just like everyone else to make relationships work.
More of a curriculum than a book. Homework, group activities, videos to watch. To be honest some of the content is a little cringey, with some phrasing that feels nextdoor to cultish. BUT that being said there is some really excellent content here, the authors seem to have genuinely done some hard internal work and are very kind (you'll meet them in their videos) and I learned some new and valuable tools that I think have changed me for the better.
The author reminds me that maturity in spirit relies upon a deep sense of self and a commitment to my emotional health. Surrendering to God's love allows for complete union with Christ. Contemplation of source occurs thru steadfast prayer, meaningful relationships, and compassion towards others. Communing with God allows for clarity, and a true sense of life through Christ.
If you are a human or know other humans, this is a must read. This workbook contains transformational practices that help us to give and receive love like Jesus would do. I use the practices taught here at least daily if not even hourly. Emotional health is vital for healthy relationships!
We just finished working through this workbook as a part of the Emotionally Healthy Relationships Course and it was a good guide through the eight week. It has some solid skills and new content from the Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Course that I thought was worth the second round.
Loved this book/study! It is a great reminder that in order to love others well, we have to know and love ourselves. Also, emotions are given to us by God and are not bad. We just have to learn how to identify them and reflect on how to handle them appropriately.
The information lead to great discussions in our life group but the presentation of the information was stiff (maybe that was needed for the audience).
