Complications: the things in life that make you late, make you distracted, and Kaylin's world, make you dead.
Kaylin—mage and mercenary, thief, and friend. Her policy is to avoid getting caught up in complications, but what happens when they find her?
She’d better hope that she has some stout mates to help pick up the slack, that's what.
Kaylin does have a good crew, but they are going to be put to the test when it is time to go back into the Mountain.
Yes, the Mountain that has loomed so large in her mind, yet has remained out of reach.
Now, complications or not, she is going back in to seek something even more precious than gold. Yet, there are rumblings behind city walls, and those rumblings may draw her back to the place that once drove her out.
Again, complications. The sinister and insidious schemes of man and dwarf begin to creep in.
Some calling her name...
Can Kaylin find a way to navigate the multiplying treacheries? Or will the vagaries of the human heart hold sway over the fates of thousands?
Kaylin and her crew finally get back to the big city, but things do not go as planned, and soon they are fighting for their way of life. Kaylin finds out she has more friends than she thought and some enemies she thought were friends. This book in the series was very intense and very good and I could not put it down. I cannot wait to read the next book to see how everything goes.
At first it was slow. I had to put it aside for a short period (1 month) and then finished it in 4 days. *K* is a smart person but it seems she can't figure out Gunter is using her to advance himself. He is a highbourne after all. And mistaking loyalty for "feelings"... ugg. Last...it confuses me why the "contract" for the dwarves was not mentioned to the company. It was urgent that it be signed. ???
Great series with characters that are realistic even if their jobs are sometimes unusual. I have an emotional response to the characters, some I like, I distrust some, amused by others, and some make the thankful and some, joyful. The story is complex and keeps my attention!
Warning! Amazing book with a cliffhanger! I like how the main character is continuing to grow and I’m very glad of certain events pertaining to relationship happened they way they did. I was getting worried. Clean (so yah my siblings could read the series so far :)
This is my favorite book of the series. I love seeing Kaylin evolve and enjoy her interactions with Rahl, Wivre and the rest of the Claws. I also liked that it wasn’t a short book. Can’t wait to read the next book.
A great development as we learn more about the mountain and the political situation with the mercenary groups. Some great action scenes and well thought out plots making for an interesting addition to the series.
A thrilling read, that will keep you turning page after page. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action. I look forward to the next one.
