Suicide Squad: Blaze

Suicide Squad: Blaze (2022) #1

Rate this book
The attacks begin without warning. Brutal, sudden…cannibalistic. A metahuman with all the power of Superman but none of his humanity. An unstoppable being ruled only by hunger and instinct, striking at random across the world. To stop this threat, Harley Quinn, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark have been assigned to corral, nursemaid, and if necessary execute five deadly new recruits: the expendable products of a secret government procedure called BLAZE. They’re ordinary prisoners, endowed with incredible power…and the certain knowledge that it’ll burn through them like wildfire. They have six months to live, maximum. If you’re staring down life in prison, maybe that’s a good deal-especially if you’re Michael Van Zandt, desperate to reunite with the mad lover who forsook you after your Bonnie-and-Clyde crime spree. But that power? It’s surprisingly transferable. As each member of the Squad dies…the others get stronger. What would a hardened criminal do with that knowledge? Worse yet: What would a desperate, lovesick idiot do with it? One thing’s certain: this time the Suicide Squad’s bitten off more than it can chew. Win or lose-they all burn.

Simon Spurrier and Aaron Campbell, the creative team behind the critically acclaimed John Constantine: Hellblazer, have been turned loose on the one DC title even more horrific and blackhearted than that one! We suggest you brace yourselves…

I was waiting for this forever, and it defied all expectations. Si Spurrier & Aaron Campbell reuinite after their amazing Hellblazer run was sadly cut short, and they do so in amazing fashion with an awesome black label Suicide Squad book. Check this out if you want to see a Crossed Superman vs. a Suicide Squad we are not used to.

The members are 4 we know: Peacemaker, King Shark, Harley, and Captain Boomernag as they lead a group of superhumans that are granted superpowers by the government, but the powers will kill them within months. This was just awesome in pretty much every way and issue 2 cannot come soon enough.

3½ ⭐
That was pretty good, and I loved the art for the most part. However it became a muddled mess of "wtf is going on" towards the end where the art got super muddy and you've got to try and guess what's actually going on.

I am getting fed up with the Suicide Squad as it is currently being written. Too goofy for me, with Ambush Bug the biggest culprit. But I thought I would give Blaze as a shot and hope that it being a more mature title (Like Suicide Squad Get Joker! #1 by Brian Azzarello would help out. It did a little, as I much more prefer this version and Get Joker over the standard edition. This one still is goofy with King Shark and Captain Boomerang. But what the heck?

Good load of fun here. I like that the big bad is reprehensible and hard to pin down, even in scenes where 'they' show up. It has the modern James Gunn Suicide Squad/Deadpool tone. Having recently finished the Peacemaker HBO show I was more receptive to the outlandish premise and though some might disagree, I like the idea/ability of these comics to go outside traditional stories.

Very funny. The Squad regulars have to "mentor" some noobs to hunt down a murderous superpowered entity.

I love Spurrier's writing, so funny and different.

Just as dark and bloody as I had expected from Black Label, with artwork that alternated between beautiful and frustrating, although I'm sure we'll eventually learn more about our blurred target.
