Fadi Zaghmout, col suo primo romanzo, crea un intreccio di storie che risulta essere una boccata d’ossigeno nel panorama della letteratura araba contempo- ranea, una spinta alla liberazione sessuale e di genere che, con lirismo, tratteggia la disperazione di un’intera generazione.

رواية أردنية صغيرة نوعًا ما ولكنها معبرة عن جانت من الواقع مغطى بضباب الأعراف والعاداتظ

رواية سيئة جدا.. صحيح الكاتب يروي أحداث من واقع عمان الأليم ومن المواضيع الساخنة النادر جدا نقاشها بشكل مفتوح لكن الللغة ركيكة وأسلوب الطرح يخلو من الموضوعية وكأنما الكاتب يشجع على الانحراف المطروح في القصة كأنه حرية شخصية وبأسلوب غسيل العقول حتى يعتاد القارئ هذه المواضيع وتصبح مقبولة عنده! القصة تخلو من الحبكة وتخلو من قصة انما هي تشببه جلسة نميمة نسوية وليست رواية!!! سيئة جدا جدا

بصراحة هذا الكتاب عملي احباط. لما شريته كنت مشتاقه لعمان ونفسي أقرأ قصة فيها ولكن للأسف الكتاب مع انه مكتوب بصيغة جيدة وحماسية وجدت نفسي متقززة من القصص والشخصيات والعمان المصورة في هذا الكتاب. القصص طبعاً حقيقية ما في إنكار ولكن رأيي الشخصي أنها لا تمثل كل عائلة ومنزل في عمان... رأي أنه الكاتب سلبي جدا ولديه تجارب محزنة ومن المؤكد لديه فئات يدافع عنها بشراسة بدون مبدأ... بالنسبة الي الحرية الشخصية مو معناه كثرة التخبيص وأذية النفس والانخراط بالمعاصي... الحرية معناها مختلف من مكان لآخر واحترام الدين والمجتمع مو اشي سيْ ما دام في وعي كافي للأفعال الشخصية. الأسلوب كان في بعض الاحيان شنيع وجلف. فما بقدر احكي اني استمتعت بقراءة هذا العمل أو حتى حبيته. خلصت الرواية في ساعات قليلة ولكنها أثارت استيائي واشمئزازي لما تحمله من اغتصاب وشذوذ ودفاع عن الانحلال الأخلاقي والجنسي. كما أثار غضبي الانتحار الغير مبرر والانغماس بما يقوله المجتمع. مالها "الباربي" اللي مو عاجبه اول القصة؟

رواية عروس عمان تكشف عن اراء وسلوكيات مجتمعية و تبعاتها حول المثلية الجنسية، العنوسة، زواج المنفعة، التحرش الجنسي، الاغتصاب، الحب بين الديانات المختلفة، الجنس ما قبل الزواج وغيرها من المحرمات المجتمعية بجرأة مقتضبة وحبكة قريبة للواقع.

عروس عمان رواية جريئة تروي قصص لمجموعة من الفتيات العمانيات "العاديّات" في قالب سلس وجميل. الاسلوب السلس لفادي زغموت الذي يستعمل بعض الكلمات العاميّة أثناء الحوار بين الشخصيات اضاف بعد حقيقي للشخصيات وقربهم من القارئ.

الرواية تروى على لسان الشخصيات انفسهم، حيث ان كل فصل من الرواية يروى من منظور احدى الشخصيات، مما اعطى القاريء الفرصة للتعرف على مشاعر وافكار عميقة تحاكي تلك السائدة عند معظم ممن تروي الرواية قصصهم.

النصف الاول من الرواية (والذي اعطيه خمسة نجوم من خمس) يتمحور حول بناء الشخصيات وافكارهم وخلفياتهم، واقعي، سلس، يشّد ويبني الاهتمام والفضول بما سيحدث بعد ذلك.

النصف الثاني (والذي لدي تحفظات مختلفة عليه) يركز حول احداث مختلفة تحدث للشخصيات وكيف يتعامل كل من الشخصيات والمجتمع حولهم مع هذه الاحداث ليؤكد الكاتب على المغزى من الرواية. الا وهو ضعف القدرة على التعامل مع المحرمات المجتمعية (taboos( وعدم الرغبة بمناقشتها او التعامل المنهجي معها ووضعها في اطر مجتمعية مقبولة، او على الاقل، غير مناهضة.

لا تقدم الرواية حلول، او حتى اراء حول ما كان من الممكن ان يتم عمله للهروب من السلوكيات غير المباشرة التي تستمر في الغليان تحت ستار من التطرف في الطريقة التي يتم التعامل بها مع الواقع بعيدا عن الوسطية.

لا أدري إن كانت هي عروسا أم قربانا قدمناه لالهة غرورنا على مذبح العادات والتقاليد. خمس شخصيات عمانية -تود لو تكون أنت سادسهم- أحلامهم البسيطة تبدو مستحيلة في عيون مجتمع أبى أن يقدم مصلحة أبنائه على مصلحته الشخصية فبات كطاحون يطحن الأحلام لينتج قمحا بلا طعم! ترى قصتك من بين السطور وتتمنى لو كان لدى الكاتب مكان لشخصية سادسة تجسد قصتك وتحدياتك لمجتمع وإن كان ظاهريا قد نطور فما زال يأبى أن يخرجنا من بوتقتنا التقليدية ودور الانسان التقليدي الذي يحافظ ولو ظاهريا على مثالية مجتمع. التغيير أشبه برياح تكسر أشجار التعنت والتمسك بعادات عفى عنها الزمن. أشجار لربما كانت مثمرة في قديم الزمان ولكنها اليوم أضحت مزرعة بجنبات حياتنا بطريقة تعيقنا من الاستمتاع بجمالية حديقتنا الكبيرة عمان. أصبحنا مزارعين نسعى بكل ما اوتينا من علم بالحفاظ على أشجار الشوك التي تضيق الطريق وتسبب موت الحشائش الصغيرة المتعطشة للحياة. سلمى، ليلى، علي، حياة ورنا ما هم إلا أشخاص من بيننا حاولوا تحقيق السعادة المشروعة لأي انسان. اصطدموا بمجتمع كان قد حضر لهم أدوار مسبقة في مسرحية رتيبة مملة أصر كل الإصرار على عدم تغيير مسار أحداثها. الفتاة مهما فعلت واجتهدت في حفظ دورها ستبقى في عيوننا عروس غضة تنتظر يوم زفافها لتكمل دورها التقليدي كزوجة مطيعة وأم مثالية. في مسرحية الحياة العمانية. مهما كان أداء الفتاة ملهما على خشبة المسرح. لن يصفق الجمهور لها إلا إذا توجت أدائها المتميز بزواج مثالي ونهاية سعيدة اعتدنا أن نصفق لها دون أدنى اقتناع بأن النهايات السعيدة لها وجود. حتى وإن كان لدينا شكوك وربما ملل من ال Happily ever after endings نبقى نفضلها على النهايات المجهولة أو الغريبة التي تشعرنا بأننا تغيرنا وربما تأخذنا رياح التغيير إلى ما لا تحمد عقباه. نحن وإن ادعينا الانفتاح والرغبة في تغيير سيناريو حياتنا. ما زلنا نرغب في نسيم لطيف للتغيير. لم نقوى بعد على فكرة رياح التغيير العاتية التي ستقتلع أشجار الملل والرتابة من جنبات حياتنا. دعونا نحلم! ولتكن أحلامنا كبيرة فالأحلام الصغيرة لا تقوى على البقاء…

This easy read tackles fundamental questions around the search for love, marriage and sexuality in the midst of conformity in general, and around free-will and self-acceptance in particular. The book intertwines several of these aspects with personal reflections from Laila, Salma, Hayat, Rana and Ali: all of these are characters that are bound by the society [in Amman] to keep their desires and voices tucked away, while they struggle to deal with the conventional, merciless and at times savage expectations that they are forced to face.

The book reads more as a "social case study" than fiction: While the characters are easy to understand, they still seem to be dealt with as "examples to learn from" rather than deep-seated personas that are more than cases in point. While the prose as well as the solutions come off as somewhat two-dimensional and oversimple, yet what makes this book endearing is that it stays true to itself and promotes the significance of staying true to oneself, challenging social norms, and striving towards self-emancipation.

While some may find this book to be "daring" because it does not hush upon social-taboos (such as pre-marital sex, inter-faith relationships, and homosexuality,) the message that resonates most strongly, in my opinion, is in the awareness of the characters (particularly Salma) that "playing by the book," "doing the expected," "being the good girl," and "following the social standards" is still not going to be good enough for a social reality that has no mercy. In its epic image of self-sacrifice, the bride of Amman urges its readers to open up our minds and see the communal self-sacrifice that we have brutally allowed ourselves to ignore.

A recommended book for those with a willingness to open up their eyes about human and women rights.

Great book.

Story gives an inside view into Ammani life and breaks taboo subjects while providing a good plot and a familiar setting. Seemed disjoined at times and pacing was a bit off. Also I felt there was an over abundance of similes and other literary devices in the place of what could have been valuable plot elements, but the end result was more than the sum of its parts. Recommended reading.

B/B+:

Like watching the Titanic except they time jump 2 years right when the boat hits the iceberg and they just tell us everyone lived happily ever after.

Had an exciting start and middle, but the final third felt quite rushed, anticlimactic, unsatisfying, and unbelievable.

I was really interested to see how the author would resolve all the problems arising in the characters’ lives, but was very disappointed to see she basically *slight spoiler* fast forwarded a couple years and basically said it all worked out in the end for everyone. The turmoil was what kept me reading so seeing such lazy, optimistic resolutions was unsatisfying.

رح أحاول أقسم وجهة نظري إلى قسمين..القسم الأول كوني قارئه و القسم التاني وجهة نظر مبنية كوني كاتبة زميلة في نفس المجال الأدبي..
أولاً أنا فخورة بيك جداً لأني و بصراحة لم أقرا بأي حال من الأحوال أي نوع من الأدب الأردني إلا القليل لأستاذ إلياس فركوح ...رح أعلق على اللغة لأني وجدت إن بعض التعليقات بتطال اللغة اللي مكتوب فيها الرواية...لغتك أكتر من جيدة ...و هادي شهادة من قارئه محترفة لكل أنواع الأدب..لدرجة إني في بعض الأوقات شعرت بالصدمة من كتر ما التعبير قوي و جيد ...الرواية بدون التطرق لأحداثها(علشان ما تنحرق) ممتعة ..و مكتوبه بطريقة مختلفة و غير ممله و تميل للإبتكار...تدل على إنك مثقف ثقافة جيدة جداً و عامل الهوم وارك تبعك في البحث بقوة قبل بداية الكتابة...الأحداث مترابطة و غير ركيكية... رواية ليها رتم موسيقي طلعات و نزلات و توقيت زمني للأحداث..التوازن العام رائع و مشوق و الأهم إنه برغم تعرض الرواية لموضوعات شائكه إلا إنك كنت دقيق في الكتابة فلم تخدش حياء القارئ و لا بلفظ واحد...
الرواية بتغوص في خفايا النفس البشرية بقوة و إن كنت من عشاق السرد ..و كنت أفضل زيادة تفاصيل تجعل القارئ أكثر حميمية مع شخوص الرواية و هي وصف ملامحهم و الأماكن اللي بتتم فيها الحداث لأن هدا الشي بيبني رابط قوي بين القارئ و النص...بالمجمل ..أنا أرشح تلك الرواية و بشده و أعتقد إنها عمل مميز بجداره و لم يسلط عليه الضوء بما فيه الكفايه ...
تحياتي و في شوق لقراءه المزيد قريباً إن شاء الله..

هو الواقع الذي نرفض الاعتراف به حتى مع أنفسنا، ونغضي عن السمع والبصر...
كم مرة سمعنا عن حوادث الانتحار ولكننا لم نتوقف لنسأل أنفسنا ما السبب!
كم مرة سمعنا عن جرائم الشرف ولم نقف لحظة للتفكير بحل سلميّ دون دم!
كم مرة سمعنا عن حوادث طلاق بلا سبب، وكأننا نخجل من أن نعرف حقيقتنا!

تلك القصص الواقعية الأليمة تعيشها بطلات هذه الرواية، باعتقادي إنها قصص جميع الأردنيات وحتى العربيات!
فإلى متى تظل المرأة قابعة تحت الأنظمة الاستبدادية!

لم اعرف ان الألم المصرية هو الم الاردنية ايضا ... راويه تتناول سرد المشاكل كالسهل الممتنع.. أحببت هذه الجمله و قررت حفظها عن ظهر قلب "هل الأفكار كالملابس؟ تناسبها بقدر معرفتنا. تضيق لينا كلما ازداد وعينا عن محيطنا ، فنخلعها و نبدلها بأفكار اخرى."

يا للألم يا فتاتي العربية!

كم تحملتِ من ظلم وقهر وسحق، لكِنكِ مازلتِ تزهرين وتُثمرين من بين شقوق الصخر القاسي..

استمتعت للغاية بهذه الرواية القصيرة سَلسة القراءة، استمتعت أيضًا بلغتها العربية الرصينة التي كانت كالسهل الممتنع..

Aroos Amman is one of the most interesting novels I've ever read.
I really liked the writing style, where every character narrates their own story but all are connected in a way or another.
Reading the novel was very amusing, the type that makes you want to finish it in one read. And as I have mentioned to the author, it was an emotional roller-coaster. I felt sad most of the time, but laughed my heart out at a few lines that were perfectly put.

The structure of the story was brilliant, and the progress of the events was very exciting. I was a bit taken aback by the slightly graphic nature of some parts of the novel , but didn't feel that they were out of context.

I enjoyed the first half of the book somehow more than the second. I felt like the second half was a bit rushed through and I wasn't totally satisfied with the ending ( I personally think that the Rana and Jante storyline was a bit too perfect and somehow cliche, especially the ending).

Ali's storyline was very well-written, and the same goes to the character. I think it was more complex than the rest of the characters, which made it the most life-like/honest of all.

As for Salma, i did not feel like the internal conflict of the character matched the tragic ending. I think it was fairly justified, yes. But I would expect more pain from a character witch such ending.

Overall, it was an excellent read, and I recommend everyone to get it, NOW! :)

This book follows four women and one man in their mid-20s trying to navigate the expectations and constraints the still mainly traditional Jordanian society puts on people of their generation. Each of these characters deals very differently with a complicated personal situation and the tensions that arise - for different reasons - from an inability to conform to mainstream norms.

I loved the diversity of the characters in this book in regard to points of views, ambitions, personality, and general life situation. Yet, despite their many differences these five characters share an unanimous discomfort and dissatisfaction with the rigid constraints the society which they grew up in places on them and how these restrict their choices in life. Hence, in the course of the novel, they try their utmost to carve out an existence that enables them to live both their individual dreams and desires, while still observing their culture's norms and values in a socially acceptable manner.

This story is well-written - if somewhat on the basic side - and explores many topics of socio-critical value. I especially enjoyed the very diverse explorations of the articulation of female sexuality in contemporary Jordan, as well as the manifestation of queer (gay) desires in a fundamentally LGBT-hostile environment.

It's definitely a highly valuable, insightful and educating contribution to contemporary Arabic literature, and a book I recommend warmly.

Read around the world project - Jordan

Okay, I recognize there is an important story in here and that the author was likely trying to make social commentary. But my big issue with The Bride of Amman is that the author has crammed so many social critiques and issues into this very slim novel that the characters almost started to feel like caricatures representing abuses, rather than real people. Within the 250 pages of this book we include (but are not limited to):
- Pregnancy out of wedlock
- Falling in love with somebody from different religion
- Sexual abuse from family members
- Sexual abuse at work
- Women that financially supporting their family with no recognition
- Extreme pressure for women to get married
- Focus on marriage vs. professional development/career
- Views (negative ones) of older single women in society
- Homosexuality and acceptance of gender identity
- Marrying a woman as a gay man out of fear of getting “found out”
- Suicide

It just felt like a lot! I almost wish the author had focused on the perspective of only one or two characters rather than four or five, and maybe dived into one or two of these social critiques. My rating is also probably influenced by the fact that I absolutely hated one of the narrators voices, although I do like that it was a full cast.

رواية ممتعة بالمجمل وما قدرت أوقف عن القراءة إلا لما انهيتها بنفس اليوم،... البداية والوسط جداً ممتعة، ما استمتعت بنهايات قصص الشخصيات لانه الكاتب أعطاها طابع النصح والإرشاد اللي - بطبيعتي الشخصية - برفضه...
استمتعت بكون شخصيات الرواية غير سلبيات (حتى سلمى بانتحارها كانت عم توجه رسالة وعم ترفض الواقع) كان في تدرج منطقي في تحولهم من شخصيات تقليدية (سلبية عند البعض في البداية؛ مثل ليلى) إلى متمردين ايجابيين

ما حسيت طول القراءة انه الكاتب ليس بأنثى ومش بس لانه على دراية بالتقاليد بس كمان كيفية تفاعل المشاعر الداخلية للشخوص... اللي عزز هاد الشعور هو الفصل الخاص بسلمى (عرسان، عروستان، فرحتان)

لولا النهايات لكنت أعطيت ٥ نجوم....

The story in itself is rather weak, however Im so disperate for Jordanian writers with a human rights agenda that Im welling to ignore any sort of storytelling expectations.
The story talks of the contemporary Jordanian/Arabian/Muslim view of women in our society with a slight look into the lives of homosexual individuals in this society.
The character are interesting yet their development has been supressed throughout the novel.
The book is highly enjoyable, yet it will remind u of a sad reality.

لم اتوقعها بهذه المتعة او الجودة نظرا لانها روايه اولى للكاتب اعتقد.
ولكن تمكنه من الكلام بلغه النساء والغور بداخل احاسيسهم ومشاعرهم افعمني بشده.لطالما تمنيت ان اعرف كيف يستطيع الكتاّب ذلك وهو قليل ان يتوفر بهذه الصوره الاقرب للحقيقه.
هي قصه فتيات باعمار مختلف في الاردن ورغباتهم ومشاعرهم بالارتباط ونظر المجتمع لغير المتزوجه وكذلك قصه رجل مثلي الجنس ورغبته في العيش بحريه بمجتمع يرفضها.
الروايه مقسمه لاجزاء متتاليه تتحدث عن كل شخصيه علي حدا.
اعجبتني جدا. وانصح بها.

عروس عمان تُعرّي عمان ومنازلها ، الاسرار المكبوتة في القلوب لكنها تظهر في العيون وعلى قسمات الوجوه، العادات والسيناريوهات التي قيدتنا ونحاول التحرر منها ولو على حساب أرواحنا ، لأن المجتمع المنفصم لا يتخلى .عن دساتيره الا بقرابين تُقدّم أرواحها وهي تعلم أنها ستبقى مُلامة على الرغم من ذلك

My trip around the globe took me to Jordan this time, with an author whose debut novel, "The Bride of Amman", discusses the condition of women and sexual minorities in one of the "freest" Arab countries (when compared to others in the area). The book is a mosaic of intertwined lives in contemporary Amman and follows a circle of young women who have been friends since school.

The story is told through multiple POVs and creates a sense of a chain reaction, where one person's decision can become another person's catastrophe, and the same event reads differently depending on who is telling it. Zaghmout's prose is blunt, almost confrontational. This sometimes took the novel into telling rather than showing territory, but he balanced things by including introspective passages. It was, in part, an intense experience, with the drama (sometimes a tad too much) adding up. He wanted to include too many themes in very little space, and I felt as if I were being chased through the story, without time to breathe. I think I needed maybe 50 more pages to give the characters more time to develop.

There's also an intentional "social commentary" mode in the narration, with characters frequently voicing their thoughts on marriage, children, sex, reputation, double standards regarding the position of men and women in the Jordanian society. The author clearly used his characters as megaphones for his own views (he's a gender activist and, as I understand, part of the queer community). It was bold of him not only to talk about the misogynistic Arab society and the restrictive role of women in society, but also about the gay community in Jordan.

The women in this book each voice a different stance on marriage and women's condition, from the more conservative to the more liberal. Leila embodies the "approved" path (education, then marriage), although she doesn't get the happy end she thinks she deserves for sticking to the rules. Salma, her sister, is the book's explicit critique of the biological clock. Hayat's arc is about trauma and the boundaries of morality in the Arab society. And Rana navigates the thin line between love and religious constraints and shows that even the Christian families in Arab countries can be bigoted. And then there's Ali, who takes us within the gay community, a means through which Zaghmout discusses the different views on homosexuality in the Arab world vs the West (disease vs normality).

My one critique regarding the characters is that some of the women's dialogue and reactions sound exactly like how a man imagines women talk. I don't know how much time Zaghmout spends with women, or whether he had women read this book before publishing it, but the female characters feel written by someone who doesn't know much about them beyond stereotypes, especially when the text leans into melodrama.

I was pleasantly surprised by the way the book openly discusses themes usually not addressed by male Arab writers, such as the social and sexual double standards (the book is sort of obsessed with sex, but probably because the society it depicts is obsessed with sex, especially with women's sexual life, from policing it, denying it and punishing it). It was an interesting (and sad) incursion into a conservative society that views women as second-class citizens (even if they are allowed to study and hold jobs, their agency is still limited and their lives controlled through patriarchy and religion).

"L'épouse d'Amman" est le premier roman à parler ouvertement de liberté sexuelle, et  d'homosexuels dans le monde arabe que je lis, et je ne peux que remercier l'asiathèque de me l'avoir envoyé.

A travers les histoires de Leila, Salma, Rana et Hayat, on perçoit l'humiliation que subissent les femmes et le fait qu'elles soient considérées comme des objets, pas assez intelligentes pour être aussi libres que les hommes mais paradoxalement, tenues comme seules responsables si leur honneur et leur chasteté sont par malheur remis en question.

Et à travers l'histoire de Ali, on perçoit l'hypocrisie de la société qui préfère pousser certaines personnes à vivre dans le mensonge et dans la tromperie que d'assumer pleinement ce qu'ils sont, au risque de se voir marquer par des étiquettes qui les poursuivront toute leur vie et qui les empêcheront de s'intégrer.
J'ai beaucoup aimé ce roman.
Je le recommande vivement !

I enjoyed reading it, though some parts are out of logic! I felt some stories are far from our community, but I can’t tell since I’m living abroad, what I liked the most how the writer had shown: how women are not equalized with their rights with men, this is for sure! And how life is much harder for a woman to live in an Arabic city, which happened to be Amman. Reading this story, let me appreciate my life here, remembering all these rules we have there.

I really enjoyed reading it and found it interesting to see the inside life of Amman or at least a glimpse to part of it …. tough at times but found it very real and humane. I love it when I look forward to curling up on my sofá and just reading a good book and this is what happened to me with this book.
