2023 Green Earth Book Award Children's Nonfiction Recommended Reading All life is connected to water. It's our most precious resource. Water. It is crucial for life on Earth, and it is everywhere. It is also the only substance on Earth that naturally has three it can be a liquid, a solid, or a gas. Why is water so important for life?
A lyrical narrative of the water cycle and more—all the places water is, seen and unseen, how humanity finds it, collects it, and uses it around the globe. The book beautifully explains the necessity of water to life on earth, including to human bodies, and ends with a call for conservation. As the author’s note says, “each of us can be a community caretaker.”
WATER is illustrated in rich colors with a boldly graphic airbrush style. Resources and a glossary are included, along with sidebars—or sideDROPS—throughout.
This is a wonderful picture book by itself but now I am also curious about the "Imagine This!" series. I appreciate the different levels the author included to attract different levels of readers. The storyline is written very poetically and gives the reader beautiful "mind" pictures. Yet the book is chock-full of scientific facts and cultural facts that are fascinating too. Having the definition of water on the title page makes you believe water is so easily defined and rather, well...boring. But then as you read the book it shares all the amazing things about water that we need to know. As all really good non-fiction picture books, it has a strong glossary and backmatter. An excellent book for the classroom and just for reading.
