Kristjan was visiting with nobles and royalty at an undisclosed location, but his meeting was interrupted by an assassination attempt on the royals. Fortunately, the attempt was thwarted, but Kristjan was severely injured in the process. He surrounded himself within a barrier to try and heal himself, but no one knows where he is or if he lives.
Will Kristjan succumb to his injuries, or will his bonded step in and help?
This book is rated mature. Cursing, unconventional relationships, and violence within.
This is second in a LitRPG series that builds from book to book. Read in order.
Normally, I'd say you know what you're getting but the first 30% doesn't have Kristjan at all and is all his friends and cohorts doing stuff. It wasn't boring, surprisingly, but I was very much aware that everything was in a holding pattern while we awaited his return (I'm being a little cagey to avoid spoiling the first book events).
After he is back, it smooths into exactly what you'd expect from the first. I can't tell if the characterization got better or if I just got used to it, but I'm nearly certain it's the latter.
And I'm going to leave it there. You know what to expect, even if you don't have Kristjan on page for that early part. Three stars and you can still judge me as harshly as you like for it.
A note about Steamy: I forget the sex scenes. There were some and about the middle of my steam tolerance. They're still tawdry and I frankly skim them when they show up.
I really like this author's books. I have a hard time describing why though. I know they aren't really good but they are enjoyable, easy to read. That sounds bad. If I try to break each part of the book apart there is nothing special there. The characters aren't that developed, the plot is okay, the character interactions are so-so, the world building and magic system are just okay. Despite knowing all that I still enjoy each book I have read. The MC is always way OP and women just kind of throw themselves at him. Everything just seems to work out. This is really an "in the moment" kind of writing style. What I mean by that is that I don't think the author has a set plan for what is going to happen from beginning to end. The MC usually goes from one interesting adventure to another interesting adventure without an all encompassing goal in mind. I know it's weird for me to say I like this book and yet describe in detail how the writing is mediocre.
Jade is a genius!! This series is beyond stupendous! I love this so much! If you like Maximus Drago then you definitely will love Kris! The world building continues to expand and get more intriguing and interesting and the plot just gets so deep and intricate it makes the reader never want to stop turning the pages! I cannot express more how enthralled I am with this series and how enjoyable it is. His crew is getting into shape and expanding nicely! His harem is quite nice, I was wondering what would happen with koko 🤣 and interesting how that how relationship worked out… poor Ajax just “knew” 😅😉. I’m curious if Kris will meet her family and how they’ll react! Also he hasn’t officially claimed his 3 brides yet… so there’s that as well. I really like Talia and Daria. All of these side characters are good. I’m glad what happened to Robert and now the rightful person will run the clan and make it better… but I hope she can increase her power base… but than again Robert had an unfair advantage. I wonder how strong he would have been without that particular bonded beast vs Minnie. I’m excited for the next book but need more of this series!! Onward lads!
Okay, this review might get a bit long. Just bare with it.
Since there was a solid starting point, the choppy aspect from book one was completely gone. The story had a smooth, in indirect, flow. It was going to be a four star until I got about three quarters through. It was still rife with the "heavy handed noble" trope, but I realized it was needed for set dressing. It's use in book one had soured me on it and was to be reflected in the review. Once I stepped back and took this in as is, I decided it fit for aesthetic reasons. So, five stars and hopefully a solid start to what is potentially a very fun series.
Fun story with op mc. Was a problem in the first book as well but in this one it really stands out that the mc is kind of an a**hole. Even to his friends and lovers he is so sensitive he will threaten them with death for making jokes. Seems to revel in scaring others. even those he cares about get scared enough they semi run away and guard themselves and the mc finds it funny.
If you can ignore the mc occasional temper tantrums the story itself is laid back and fun read. If you liked the first you will like the second even more.
A lot happened in this book. It was very good. It’s only main downside being that the story going pulled in a dozen different directions. I found myself getting situational whiplash and re-reading parts because I though I missed something. Overall it was very enjoyable. I love reading other characters reactions to the powerful mc. Will continue to follow this series
Seldom does an author get every story or series as enjoyable to read as this one!!! Such an amazing world you've designed for our imagination to run wild in!!! Flawless characters and amazing interactions!!! I will anxiously await what comes next in this series and your others!!! Thank you again
On the negative side (must be one to be fair): the MC is just TOO powerful!
Eagerly awaiting #3
A general comment: Xander Jade is a -relatively- new author; I m trying to get everything he writes and up to now, found everything good to very good. PLS continue on the same track!
The second installment in the story is a lot of fun. Is full of adventure more world building more personalities more relationship building and just plain fun as well as drama. The story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger but it's not too bad can't wait to read the next book.
Great story with an interesting & evolving MC. Fantasy-Harem.
Interesting & evolving MC? Check. Sex with multiple partners of various fantasy races? Check. Great developing story? Check. Idiot entitled clueless nobles? Check.
I've just recently discovered Xander Jade & I've loved everything that I've read.
Fast paced page turner with interesting characters that you can instantly root for .I have enjoyed other books by this Author and look forward to reading book three in this series
It started off kind of odd. I didn't like the beginning, it was a little sappy, however, it flowed nicely and I am glad that I kept reading. I really enjoyed the read and am looking forward to the next installment of this series.
All of Xander Jade's books have been excellent so far. I highly suggest reading all of them. If you haven't read any of his books so far, this is a good series to begin with.
As a fantasy reader for more than fifty years this series has me excited for more! I have read your other books that I have found and will start to re-read them immediately.😀
The story gets deeper and better as it grows. The expansion leads to new people, new lands and off shoots that intertwine with main story. A great weekend or an evening read.
The mc, Kris, is of course ridiculously OP but the plot variety keeps the book from getting stale or repetitive. Fun read for the genre and looking forward to the next book.
A good part of the beginning of the book is focused on the support characters rather than the MC, while a bit weird it does help to flesh out the story. Again the story is a good blend of mysticism and the modern world.
Great continuation of the story line The MC does act very immature at times like other reviewers have noted but overall, I enjoyed the story. The dragon does act like you would anticipate a top tier predator to act.
I would have liked to give this book a five star but there's to much repetition in this book about Kris and his prowess, seem like a little filler. Still loved this story
I have read all of Xanders books. Every one of them is top notch. This series is my favorite. Love the worlds and the characters. Storyline is excellent. Tons of action. Well worth the read!!
