A collection of lost books holds the clues to her family's legacy…and her future.
Hope Sparrow has mastered the art of outrunning her tragic past, learning never to stay anywhere too long and never to allow anyone control over her life again. Coming to Wanishin Falls in search of her family's history already feels too risky. But somewhere in the towering stacks of this dusty old bookshop are the books that hold Hope's last ties to her late mother—and to a rumored family treasure that could help her start over.
Only, the bookshop is in shambles, and the elderly owner is in the beginning stages of dementia and can’t remember where the books lie. To find the last links to the loved ones she's lost, Hope must stay and accept help from the townsfolk to locate the treasured volumes. Each secret she uncovers brings her closer to understanding where she came from. But the longer she stays in the quaint town, the more people find their way into the cracks in her heart. And letting them in may be the greatest risk of all…

Bookshops and secrets- who can pass that up?
The 'Dusty Jackets' bookshop in Wanishin Falls holds the key to Hope’s heritage. She was sent there to pick up some rare books that her mother had bequeathed her, but upon her arrival she discovers the books are not readily available. The owner has dementia and can’t remember where they were placed, and the bookshop is packed to the brim with old books. Hope is talked into sticking around for a couple of months to help the older couple while she searches for her books, but she is very edgy about the prospect of staying in one place for too long.
Hope is just now getting her life back together. She’s an orphan who got lured in by the wrong person and her life became a living nightmare for a while. Now free, she’s hoping to open a literary themed mobile food cafe, but she can’t do that until she’s found her mother’s books. In the meantime, she meets the bookshop owner’s son, Ronan, and despite Hope’s skittishness around men, the two forge a friendship. But everyone has secrets, especially Hope- and to top it off - there are also rumors of a treasure, and the possibility that Hope’s inheritance might hold valuable clues- which has someone awfully interested in the Dusty Jackets bookshop and Hope’s books…
This book is the full package deal. There’s a dusty bookshop that made me long for the days when I used to prowl through old- off the beaten path- bookshops looking for my own hidden book treasures. There is a mystery, some suspense, a little action and adventure, a sweet romance, and some lovely and important Christian messages that tackle issues we have all pondered on at some point in our lives.
In some places the story gets a little emotional, but in a good way, and I loved watching Hope come out of her shell and start taking tentative steps towards trust and healing.
Overall, I really liked this story. I’m very impressed with this debut author and will be on the lookout for her next book!!
THE BOOKSHOP OF SECRETS by Mollie Rushmeyer is Christian fiction mystery with romantic elements featuring a broken young woman searching for clues to her family’s legacy in missing old first edition books. This is a beautiful inspirational standalone story written by a debut author.
Hope Sparrow is protecting herself from her past by keeping on the move and never letting anyone get close or taking control of her life. She has been led to a small-town bookshop, Dusky Jackets on the shore of Lake Superior. Her mother’s treasured books were sent here, and Hope has come to find them and hopefully they will lead her to a rumored family treasure.
Hope agrees to stay for two months to help in the bookshop and hopefully discover where her books have disappeared to. With the help of the bookshop owner’s grandson, Ronan, they work together to uncover the secrets of the books, hidden treasure and their families’ intertwining pasts.
This debut book is several story threads in one and all of them come together seamlessly in an ending that is satisfying as well as inspirational. Hope’s past is tragic and Ronan’s family curse and accident have left him with more than physical scars and yet they come together and continually prove to each other that they are more than their pasts. The mystery of the missing books and the search for lost treasure is intricately woven into the story with plenty of twists and surprises. I feel Hope and Ronan’s growing relationship is realistically portrayed as well as their return to their belief in God’s love for them. There are several literary as well as biblical quotes throughout this story.
I highly recommend this book debut novel of hope, love, and inspiration with an intricate mystery intertwined throughout.
This book would have gotten a higher rating if I didn't have to have religion shoved at me while reading it. Honestly, this should have been titled Religious Bookshop of Secrets. To each their own if you follow a religion, as one who doesn't it annoyed me that nowhere in the description of this book did it mention that I would have a religious proverb, psalm or reference to God, his wisdom etc etc quoted every other line it seemed like. I'm stubborn enough to actually finish the book, but where I really lost a lot of respect for the book and it's author is when the main character, Hope, is explaining to her love interest, Ronan, about her past as a victim of sex trafficking, and Ronan replies with, "Wow. That's a lot. While I may not ever understand the pain of what you went through, I know one person who can: God." SERIOUSLY?! Nope, not on ANY level could God understand the pain of being sexually abused. That made me fume. Do not recommend this book.
The Bookshop of Secrets by Mollie Rushmeyer is her debut story about finding lost secrets, starting over and finding restoration in the Lord. I really appreciated this story. 4 stars.
This story centers around Hope Sparrow. She has been running from her past for many years and never stays anywhere too long. She goes to Wanishin Falls searching for her family’s history. She ends up at a small-town bookshop, called Dusty Jackets, looking for books that hold Hope’s last ties to her late mother – and to a rumored family treasure.
The bookshop is old and run down, with an elderly owner in the beginning stages of dementia. The books Hope searches for are missing so she goes on the search to find them. In her search, she meets Ronan, a sweet guy who believes in the value of kindness and respecting others and together they work together to uncover where the secret books are, all while growing close in the process.
This story was very engaging and emotional! It deals with some hard topics, such as human trafficking, dementia, PTSD and panic attacks. To be clear, there are not full details described of the human trafficking but I wanted to mention those things so you would be aware.
This bookshop details and literary references in this book are great – we have a cat named “Fitzwilliam” from Pride and Prejudice and many classic books mentioned throughout the story. We had references from Tolkien, Austen, Bronte, C.S. Lewis - it was just a good time. We also had a good mystery aspect thrown in - where are the books? Will they lead to her family's history and a secret treasure? Who keeps trying to steal the books and why?
Ronan and Hope’s relationship was also so sweet. I liked how he was a true gentlemen and loved watching them grow close throughout their search together. She was truly learning how to trust the Lord and learn how to begin again.
The faith in this book was good - we have scriptures quoted and referenced, prayers and redemption.
Overall, I feel like this book was unique in its story! I really liked how layered it was, had so many literary classic references and the ending was great. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy to honestly read and review.
This book ticked all the boxes for me from the beautiful cover that invited me in to the last line that left me wanting more. This is a debut novel but it was so well written you will think it is from a seasoned author that is a long time favorite. This story is deep and deals with some difficulties but it is handled with the utmost of care and compassion. I had a dear friend that passed from Alzheimer’s so I could identify with the emotions the characters were feeling. Ulysses was such an important part of the story especially during his lucid moments. Hope is a complicated character and it was a treasure to watch her grow in her relationships while learning to trust and her faith. The mystery surrounding the books and the message they contained had my mind going double time trying to figure it out. Add in a blossoming romance with Ronan along with the bookshop setting and I was ready to swoon. It was so realistic I wanted to jump in and help organize the shop. It’s hard to write a review and not give away secrets so I will just say that you won’t want to miss this story as it is gobsmacking good. A must read and goes on my favorites list for this year. I definitely will be looking for more from this author. I received a complimentary copy through Book Funnel. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
Wow! I am so impressed with this story. This little book packs a punch! Especially with that ending. Simply beautiful! I found my own sort of healing along the way through the pages. I would highly recommend this book!
This debut novel from Mollie Rushmeyer is so stunning and precious. I was immediately drawn in, something that just makes me so happy when I'm reading a book. Everything about this book was good. The characters were well thought out, the plot was really good, and the writing very well done. I totally loved it. The main female character, Hope Sparrow, has been through such an ordeal, it hurt to read parts of it, especially when she was remembering the bad parts, but I loved how God began the healing process. The other characters were also incredibly well done. Totally a wonderful debut and I look forward to more from this author.
My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinion in this review is my own.
An enjoyable read from a new, and new to me author! My curiousity was held with wondering about connections between families from the mystery involved. There were fitting spiritual elements and uplifting sections woven throughout which I was pleased to be reading. It wasn't too long nor tedious which is a factor for me these days as I don't have the patience otherwise. I liked how it resolved well overall. I think it was an marvelous debut and can recommend it to pretty anyone looking for a wholesome Christian suspence.
The charming cover of The Bookshop of Secrets drew me right in and I knew I wanted to read it before I ever read the summary. Once I knew the bookshop was key to a family mystery and treasure hunt, I was even more persuaded. 4.5 stars! This debut book by Mollie Rushmeyer is really two stories in one. Hope Sparrow's past could have been a story all its own but between her current pursuit of her mother's missing books and unraveling the mystery of her ancestor's history, it was a really intriguing story.
Hope Sparrow and Ronan Barrick have both suffered devastating tragedy in their lives and are just getting by and making do. When they meet at the Barrick family bookshop, Dusty Jackets, all that changes as hearts and emotions start to thaw and hope starts peeking through. As they work together to untangle the web of family and town history, they draw closer, but still aren't sure they can let the past go. I loved watching as the story and their lives unfolded into a wonderful happy ever after acknowledging our loving Father is the One writing the rest of our story.
The Bookshop of Secrets is a cleverly written suspense full of twists and turns, mysteries and revelations guaranteed to keep readers guessing while turning the pages at warp speed. Favorite quotes, "Use your love of books to help you. The words are read for a brief time, but we remember the way they made us feel for the rest of our lives. The same goes for food. The taste is for the moment, but the memory forever."
"She'd asked God to do that for her once-toss out everything soiled and damaged inside of her and fill her up with the cleaning and restoring power of His grace."
The Bookshop of Secrets was a thought-provoking and captivating story. I'll be watching for the next book from this talented author. I appreciate Harlequin making a copy of The Bookshop of Secrets available for review. All thoughts and opinions are my very own.
This was a FANTASTIC story! From the mystery element, to Hope and Ronan and the rest of the characters that round out this story, and the truth that no one is too far for God to reach, this was a beautifully written story. I cannot recommend this story enough!
I received this book from the author and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
The Bookshop of Secrets tackles the tough topics of trauma survivors and PTSD in a very hopeful and grace filled way. While the author doesn’t sugar coat the effects of trauma, she gives hope that survivors can find healing from their past pain. The characters in the book are so easy to love, and the setting of a small town bookshop is perfect. I love the added mystery the main characters work through. I also loved seeing characters with a diversity of special needs featured as major characters. This is a great read! I look forward to seeing more from both this author and this publisher. This is the second book I’ve read from the new Harlequin Love Inspired Trade line, and I have definitely found another publisher to add to my favorites list! Thanks to Just Read Tours and NetGalley for the review copy. All opinions are my own.
What a wonderful debut novel by author Mollie Rushmeyer. I loved this story! The Bookshop of Secrets is a multi-layered story of; healing from a traumatic past, learning to trust again, heritage, family, friends, faith, love, and a treasure hunt! Add in generational stories and legends, food, and books, intrigue, redemption and restoration, and you have a winning story!
I could not put it down. I highly recommend The Bookshop of Secrets, and I cannot wait for what's next for author Mollie Rushmeyer.
Thank you to the author and publisher for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own. I will be purchasing a copy for my keeper shelf!
No star rating as I read about 50 pages and couldn't get into it. There were a lot of religious references scattered in the pages I read and it was too much for me personally. Others may really enjoy the story.
It's set in a bookshop, which I loved. She comes to Wanishin Falls in search of some books her mother left for her through another friend, and she's not planning to stay long. There she meets the owners, an elderly couple. The man has dementia and doesn't remember where he put the books, so Hope agrees to stay and help organize while she searches for the books.
She also meets Ronan, the owner's grandson. The more Hope and Ronan work together, the more they become friends. But Hope has a traumatic past she's running from, and issues to overcome.
Very religious content.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
A thought provoking and emotional tale, this story is full of mysteries and secrets that will capture every literary lover’s heart from the start of the first page. This story really has it all, with well-developed characters, an intriguing setting, a thrilling treasure hunt, and a mystical bookshop full of secrets. The author does a fantastic at bringing to life the horrors and after math related to human trafficking, including panic attacks, depression and other emotional and psychological issues. Finding a way to cope is one of the key elements of the story. Readers will be left reeling with so many thoughts from this story after the turn of the last page. This is a story readers will not want to miss out on.

As soon as I saw the cover of this book I knew I wanted to read it. I mean what is not to love about a setting that is in a bookshop?! I mean that is a book nerds dream. Not only is the book cover amazing but the storyline is spectacular. This is Mollie Rushmeyer's debut novel and she did such an amazing job with it. I truly did not what to expect but the story is so much more than what the summary relays.
I was completely captured by the characters. We meet Hope who steps into Dusty Jackets a bookshop owned by an elderly couple. She is looking for her mothers books that she has left her. Immediately you can tell that she has secrets that she doesn't want to divulge them. She is closed off and doesn't like people getting close to her but she can't help it after all she in a small town where everyone knows everyone and everything. Her mother has left her these classic books with clues to a treasure. In trying to find her books she meets wonderful people in the town including Ronan which is the grandson of the owner of the bookstore. He is not without his own hurts and past but together they manage to overcome their hurts.
I can't tell you too much because it will ruin it for you but know that this story definitely has its twists and turns. It has a bit suspense and of course there is romance. But most of all there is a strong element of faith and the way the author incorporates it into the clues of the treasure hunt is very unique. Kudos to the author as well for tackling some deep subjects that some may shy away from. The topic of dementia and human trafficking are a big part of the story and the author does present them in a gentle but touching way. She does make you feel the pain and suffering that Hope has gone through and truly connects you to the character.
Overall I really enjoyed this story and I cannot wait to read Mollie's future books. I am hoping she writes about one of the characters in this story. I think she could use her own book! (I won't tell you who it is but if you read this I think you will see who I am talking about!)
I received a copy of this book from the author. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I love a redemption story! Especially when I have such a love for the characters. The cast of main characters is excellent, especially Hope. Her growth throughout the story is really beautiful. I also adored both Ronan and his grandparents, Ulysses and Mags.
The Bookshop Of Secrets is a captivating novel. The setting is beautiful, the characters are well written, and the storyline is real and raw. The story touches on some heavy topics that I felt were both handled and written well.
If you enjoy a story of healing, forgiveness and found family, check this one out.
Side Note: This is Christian Fiction. So just a heads up if CF isn't your thing.
Thanks to Harlequin Publicity Team and Harlequin Books for this gifted copy!

It took me a long time to finish this book, not because it was not good but because I wanted to savor every chapter. The characters of Hope and Ronan are especially precious because of their broken backgrounds and the emotional baggage they both have from their past. Rushmeyer does a great job of touching on rough subjects with grace and mercy...showing how God can transform us into jewels. I can't believe this is Rushmeyers' first book because it was perfection. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author. 5/5 well-deserved stars
From the first time I saw the cover and read the back cover copy of The Bookshop of Secrets by Mollie Rushmeyer, the book went on my to-read list. But this debut surpassed every expectation I had. Hope Sparrow is a character I liked from the moment she walked on the page. Yes, she holds secrets, but as those ugly secrets are revealed, I just rooted for her to find happiness and healing all the more. Rushmeyer handles some difficult, but very real, subject matter in a way that holds both truth and delicacy for readers as we see Hope’s present-day struggles with her past.
As Hope searches for a treasure she believes her mother left her clues to find, her path takes her to a bookshop in a small Minnesota town. Here she meets (and makes) friends—something she has not allowed herself to have despite the people who have helped her along the way. From the elderly owners of the bookshop, their grandson, and the manager of the local café, the townspeople welcome her into their lives.
The Bookshop of Secrets builds upon the well-paced, character-driven story with the search for the treasure and the revelations of both personal truths and clues to the hunt at just the right moments. Hope (a name the character chose to separate herself from the past) is an apt name because this book is filled with just that—hope for relationships with God and each other, hope for a better life, and hope for a future filled with friendships and love.

The Bookshop of Secrets has mystery, intrigue, suspense, wonderful characters, kindness, but most especially, love!
When Hope Sparrow walked into a bookshop called Dusty Jackets, she never thought the name would be as appropriate to fit the store, but unfortunately it did. Hope went there to find books that her late mother had left her in which held secrets to a family she never knew.
Her plan of getting in and out of the town of Wanishin Falls without anyone really noticing seems to have gone up in smoke. The elderly couple who owns the bookshop are way over their heads in being able to assist her. The husband is in the throes of dementia and although he was a friend of his mother’s has no idea where the books she left could be. In order to find them, Hope agrees to a job at the shop keeping an eye on Ulysses, the husband while trying to sort through books and giving Ulysses wife Mags a break.
Uncomfortable around people, this is Hopes worst nightmare, but finding these books and understanding her history is more important. When she meets the owner of the local diner and tells her she has always dreamed of having a traveling bookstore/cafe, Kat hires her on the spot to cook.
Soon she becomes more involved in the town and the community, but she begins to feel hopeless. Her mother died when she was very young, and Hope was raised in the foster care system. But unfortunately, she found herself in horrible trouble and spent the next ten years trying to get out and never wants anyone to know what happened to her. Those secrets are frightfully buried deep in her psyche.
But now, as she tries to find out her past and a legend of buried treasure her mother would always tell her about, as much as she finds comfort in the townspeople, especially Ulysses’ and Mags’ grandson Ronan, she won’t let herself imagine a life here, for fear of embarrassment. She truly believes no one would forgive her for what she had done.
As Hope proceeds to find the hidden books, and make sense of their meaning with the help of these wonderful people, how will she be able to give them up if the mystery is solved?
With no faith, Hope feels lost, but with renewed promise from others she is able to see the light at the end of the tunnel and hopefully release the demons she has carried for so many years.
The Bookshop of Secrets is much more than finding a mysterious treasure. It is much more than finding where you belong. It is much more than putting your past behind you. It is finding peace.
Thank you #NetGalley #LoveInspiredTrade #MollieRushmeyer #TheBookshopofSecrets for the advanced copy.
This is my first book by Mollie and won't be my last! I'll be honest, I judged the book by the cover so I had no idea what the story was about. There was SO much to take in between the covers and it was incredibly powerful!
I'm so VERY grateful for authors who are tackling tough topics that affect our world. I think it's important to mention that human trafficking (not saying the "s" word) it a vital part of this story. And while the author does an incredible job of helping us feel the horror through Hope, she doesn't overdo it to where the story feels fake or forced. Any reader will be impacted by Hope's story.
THAT being said, I just loved this story overall. As a caregiver I could relate to Ronan's family as they took care of his grandpa. Of course, there is the bookshop... which I wish existed because I'd love to visit it. If you've never been up to the Lake Superior area in Minnesota, it really came to life through the author's writing. It's a beautiful area.
We get to know Hope as she's trying to start a new life for herself, but she has to get some books her mom left her. That leads her to Wanishin Falls where Dusty Jackets is located. That's where she begins to meet the people of the town. If you have ever lived in a small town, you know you can't stay anonymous for long. Then she meets Ronan whose family has something of a reputation. As the story goes along, the layers of their lives begin to reveal themselves. And yes, the small town vibes play well into this story.
The faith element is wonderful and I enjoyed how the author added it into the treasure hunt. Speaking of which, there is a LOT of excitement that goes along with that storyline. Both Hope and Ronan have to figure out where they stand with the Lord. And if you like characters you enjoy disliking immensely, this one contains a few!
I can't wait for more stories from this author. Would I love for them to begin in Wanishin Falls? You wouldn't see me complaining!
*I received the ebook ARC for review. This is my personal opinion.
Do you enjoy stories set in bookshops? Check. Do you love a story which unravels a character's family heritage? Check. Add in a treasure hunt and you've got a very dynamic read!
Hope (not her real name) doesn't stay in one community for too long, constantly looking over her shoulder. Just stopping in Wanishan Falls to pick up her mother's old books, she stumbles upon the elderly owners of the bookshop. Unfortunately, he has dementia and doesn't remember where the books are. So she's stuck staying while she searches the piles to find what she's looking for.
The owner's grandson comes along, suspicious of the newcomer and her intentions. As they get to know each other a friendship slowly grows, as he helps her figure out the clues to her past and the way to the future.
Hope's character has a traumatic past. I think the author does a good job helping the reader understand trauma responses and behaviors. Faith and support are so evident in this story, reminding us even as we grow older, we can play a role in the lives of others.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Not gonna lie; sometimes I'm nervous to read debut novels. You just never know what to expect, you know? But this book? I was HOOKED in chapter one. Not even at the end of the chapter. Immediately. I was hooked.
The bookstore, the house (seriously! She stayed in a turret room!!), the mystery, her personal history. Whew. Really REALLY hard stuff, some of it. But beautiful redemption, too.
I highly HIGHLY recommend this book, and will ABSOLUTELY read her next one.
The Bookshop of Secrets by Mollie Rushmeyer is a wonderful fiction that drew me in from the very beginning and never let go. I loved it.
This was such an impressive story. I was quickly immersed into the troubled and complex story of our main character, Hope Sparrow, and her attempt to escape, forget, and move on from her past and her concerns. The involvement with the elderly couple and the bookshop owner that has the diagnosis of dementia was hard to read, but important and very fundamental to the storyline. The additional threads involving Ronan and the progression of their relationship was a wonderful addition, as well as the mysteries added to keep it fresh and suspenseful. A perfect balance.
I really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it for anyone that loves fiction that has elements of romance, mystery, and a well-drawn character cast.
5/5 stars
Thank you EW and Harlequin Romance/ Love Inspired Trade for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 10/25/22.
So many thoughts and emotions swirl as I try to write this review, which is fitting, actually. Because this book roils with thoughts and emotions. Much more complex than the synopsis would have you believe, The Bookshop of Secrets slowly unearths long-buried secrets and probes shallow graves of hopes and fears until everything is laid bare.
The process is horrifying, freeing, ugly, and achingly beautiful all at the same time.
Rushmeyer offers a glimpse into an ugly world through one trying to rebuild a life outside it--and outside God. She shows the pain of a lifetime of rejection and accusation. In the end, people trapped in thought patterns and destructive behaviors discover the lies that tether them there--lies that sometimes they hold onto as if lifelines.
This isn't an easy read, but it's a worthwhile one. I knew I'd love it before I opened the first page, but I hadn't turned that page before I was proven right. While I was given a copy of the book for review purposes, I preordered it long before that, and will be receiving my own, paid-for, copy upon its release.
Endorsement: "Readers will soon discover their new favorite author after reading The Bookshop of Secrets, by debut novelist Mollie Rushmeyer. The story builds in layers, like waves upon the shores of Lake Superior, with Rushmeyer's gentle, rhythmic prose. A beautiful story of redemption and hope." -Gabrielle Meyer, author of When the Day Comes
NO WHERE in this book's summary does it make reference to the fact that this is a heavily faith-based book. If it had, I would not have even taken it out of the library. But because I was misled into taking it out of the library, I did skim it and still did not like it. The characters and writing were flat and the "mystery" was absurd.
Bookstore? Treasure? Romance? I was sold even before I read the first page. There was so much to unfold in this story. Hope had such a tragic backstory that I wasn’t sure how she would find healing within the pages but the author did such a wonderful job of showing the healing power of God’s love in her life.
I enjoyed the air of mystery surrounding the possible treasure with books being the keys to solving it. Tucked into the treasure hunt was a very sweet romance which had me closing the book with a satisfied sigh. Loved it.
There was so much to like about the variety of characters that made their way into Hope’s path keeping her from her goal of getting out of town without forming any attachments. I especially liked her friend Kit and hope that there might be a future book on her story?
I received this book complimentary as a participant of the JustRead tour. I was not required to give a positive review. All of the opinions I have expressed here are honest and my own.
Forever a stranger—in every town, to every person. Is that how Hope wants to live? Running from a horrendous past, she grasps at a future with an elementary formula. Find her books and the treasure then roam the country with her literary-themed food truck, never stopping to share in anyone’s life. She feels so far beyond repair that she promises not to involve or risk her heart. Until… The author introduces the human trafficking element and brings the reader into a world of panic attacks, depression, emotional and psychological wounds, too deep to fade away. Not left hopeless, people along the way give coping skills until finally the only option left is God, who has been there the whole time. Be ready to enter a bookshop with much more than books. Could it contain answers to a hurting cast of characters?
