In recent years `culture' has become a central concern in a wide range of fields and disciplines. This book introduces the main substantive and theoretical strands of this `turn to culture' through the medium of a particular case that of the Sony Walkman. Using the example of the Walkman, the book indicates how and why cultural practices and institutions have come to play such a crucial part in our lives, and introduces some of the central ideas, concepts and methods of analysis involved in conducting cultural studies.
While I found the system of going to the readings and back to the text a bit inconvenient, this paper is the sole reason my thesis exists, so thank you. Contains a lot of information about the Sony Walkman, from the beginnings until after it comes out, i really found that information useful.
This was a prescribed text in a Media Studies course in 2010, I have since revisted it, and I now appreciate much more the theoretical framework put forward and ideas espoused. Despite being written in 1996 - this could easily be applied to the ipod or iPhone. Merely by deleting the word Walkman and replacing it with a iPhone would, astoundingly, render this text fully functional still.
