The individual insights are fantastic for those in love with wine making and drinking but better than that there is a gentle narrative through the years. Anders Frederik Steen has captured the evolution of himself in a subtle way as he moves from part time wine maker to living on the farm and carefully tasting many of his own wines.
I wish I could write about anything the way that Steen writes about wine. A beautiful reflection on years of progress building something. Anyone who cares about a craft will relate to the thoughts and musings within.
The notes of winemaking are great, but the personal notes of the author are insufferable.
What's his beef with boeuf bearnaise? Or the name of his wine translated to 10 languages, "plz don't throw plastic to the ocean", what an awful virtue signaling. His charlie hebdo opinions, "I'm not a islamophobe, I love muslims with their rose water", no comment.
In general, he's so in love with himself, so proud of being so much better than his industry colleagues, so certain that wine has liberated him and changed his whole worldview, so everyone should do the same, with zero reflection on the fact that a 50$ bottle of natural wine remains in the category of "luxury products" for most of us mortals.
Again, nice wine making notes, but the personal parts are phony, self absorbed, and annoying to no end.
