Modern Magick #11

Dancing and Disaster

Rate this book
Rumour’s got a lot to say for itself, and the message is clear: the regulator’s ready.

You know. The magickal regulator. The bright and shiny thing with which we, Team Improbable, propose to restore magick to a fading Britain.

Somebody’s got to test it, and that somebody is us.

Which means wading into the depths of a long-dead realm that nobody’s entered in centuries. And I may have had some practice at that, but this time it’s different.

This time, somebody’s still home. And they really aren’t happy about trespassers.

Looks like disaster’s on the agenda. Again.

Not to worry, though. Where there’s life, there’s hope.

And… dancing.

Ves and Jay return in a fresh bout of magickal madness! Grab your dancing shoes and hang onto your hat. It’s going to be wild.

She's back!

I'm late as a reader for this series, so I did not know ahead of time that the author took a year before tackling this volume (for good reasons should I add!): I'm just glad I got to it after plowing through the first ten volumes :D She's going as strong as ever, characters all as developed and quirky as ever. It doesn't feel like she took a break and I'm still a fan of where the story is going overall :D Now to hope the next one won't be in too long of a time from now :-)

This series is a delight and this installment doesn't disappoint. Ves is the perfect blend of whimsy and wit, while her compatriots endeavour to keep her from causing too much chaos.

I love this series. The world building is wonderful, the main character, Ves, is a delight with her impulsive actions, frequently changing hair color, curiosity, and generous, loyal heart. The supporting cast is so well done and add so much to the story - Addie the unicorn, Jay, Zareen, Val, Milady, and of course, the House, along with others. This installment had some darker moments, but also some crazy funny ones: a dance off against skeletons? A wicked, sentient house? Great snacks, and, as usual, a wonderful story. If you like clean, exciting, just plain delightful fantasy, you can't go wrong with this book and better yet - the entire series!

Love It!

Skeleton flash mob danceoff, anyone? I've now re-read the entire series and am delighted that the author continues to delight, surprise, and elicit laughter through out. Need a magical puck me up? Read on....

This was such a fun and silly Ves adventure, though I did forget just how bratty she is at the beginning.

I've missed this world and it was nice to be back.

Although there have been a few comedic moments throughout this series, English has really got the hang of making things funny as well as her comedic timing in this book! The first chapter, especially, had me laughing to myself and had my dogs looking at me like "what's so funny?"
The opening chapter was so intriguing and attention-grabbing that, even if you hadn't read this series before, you would want to read this book.

It was an absolute CHORE to put this down and not devour it in one sitting. The only reason I did stop reading is because my phone ran out of charge! But I still finished the book in under a day, so it didn't hinder me much haha.

I was excited to finally hear about Mauf, but unfortunately it was, like the Pup in the previous instalment, a comment that felt lacking in substance and an after-thought. We didn't hear more of Pup or Miranda, either, since that very small reunion at the end of the last book. It just felt a bit like an "oh! I forgot to include these characters. How do I bring them in without changing the plot I have going?"

Otherwise, I still really enjoyed this book, though. It kept me on my toes throughout the entire thing! There were some really shocking and unpredictable elements to the narrative, which is something I would assume is usually difficult to do when you've been opening these characters up to the audience for 10 books.

Also, I adored the explanation of Ves' asexuality. What a queen. Jay's reaction was super sweet and heart-warming, as well. What a power couple, whether romantic or not. I love these characters so much, it's insane.
