With a killer on the loose and horse thieves plaguing the area, it’s up to Sophie “Phee” Kimball to corral the clues and bring an outlaw to justice . . .

Spring is in the air as Sun City West gears up for its annual Bye Bye Birdie festivities, when residents bid a fond farewell to the snowbirds and happily reclaim the town for themselves. But planning comes to a screeching halt when the town curmudgeon plummets to her death from the library bell tower and sheriff’s deputies suspect foul play. With the celebration on hold—and Phee’s mother worried that she won’t get her moment in the spotlight on a local TV show slated to cover the event—Phee is thrust into the role of sleuth once again to find the killer.

As Phee soon discovers, there’s no love lost between the town and the unfortunate victim, and with the clock ticking and virtually everyone a potential suspect, she’s got her work cut out for her. Then a passel of horseflesh goes missing, and Phee starts to think the two crimes might be connected. With the town on edge and high noon approaching, she’ll have to wrangle with a band of daring desperados and lasso a lawbreaker who’s dead set on sending her to boot hill

Saddled Up 4 Murder by J. C. Eaton is the ninth book in the cozy Sophie Kimball Mystery series. Each book of the series contains it’s own mystery that is solved by the end so the books can be read in any order or as a standalone if choosing to do so. However, those that read from the beginning will get all of the character development throughout the series.

In the beginning of this series readers were introduced to Sophie ‘Phee’ Kimball who had been living in Minnesota while her retired mother was living in her retirement community in Sun City West, Arizona. Phee’s mother called her daughter frantic that there was a murderer on the loose and targeting her book club thinking her daughter who worked as a bookkeeper for the police department was as good as any detective.

After traveling to Arizona to help her mother Phee decided it was time for a change and being close to her mother would help keep her out of the path of any more murderers. A friend of Phee’s just happened to want to start up a private investigating business so a new job for Phee quickly became available. Now as the P.I.s are investigating a horse theft ring Phee finds herself looking into yet another death when a deli worker falls from a tower.

I have been following the Sophie Kimball Mystery series from the beginning and find each and every one hilarious and such fun to read. As much as I enjoy the main character in the series and her character growth throughout I think that it’s her mother and her group of friends and furry companion that win me over time and time again. There is of course another fun mystery to be solved in this ninth book too so when finished I would of course want to return again if any more book are coming.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Three things will happen when you read a Sophie Kimball Mystery: 1) you won't want to put the book down, so plan your time and snacks wisely (be sure to have bagels and a donut or three handy), 2) you'll laugh out loud (snorters like me, beware) and 3) you'll begin impatiently waiting for the next mystery with Phee, Augusta and the Booked 4 Murder book club ladies!

"Saddled", finds Nate and Marshall on the trail of modern-day horse thieves, while Phee is hooked into finding out who killed the local "deli-witch". - the hated "mean lady" of the deli. All the "twists and turns" and "red herrings" in the two mysteries were wonderfully written and everything fell into place. I enjoyed seeing more of Augusta in the book - she's smart and a hoot! Along with trying to solve a murder, Phee is getting ready for her wedding day. Reading this series is like visiting with old friends - with everyone talking, good food and lots of love. The characters seem as if they could leap off the page! By the way, we see a new side to Streetman and he is quite the.....nope, not giving anything away!

I'm deep into #3 and can't wait for the next case!

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I never know what to expect when I read a book featuring Sophie "Phee" Kimball, and Saddled Up 4 Murder was quite the ride.
Phee and her mom are so funny, and her mom's dog Streetman cracks me up.
Phee works for a private investigation company and her mom never hesitates to call her when something goes wrong.
Between her mom, her aunt Ina, and the ladies in the book club, it's a wonder how Phee gets any work done.
When a murder takes place, and the "deli witch" is dead, all eyes turn to Phee to sort out the details.
This series always makes me chuckle so I'm very happy to recommend this book to others.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.

Sophie "Phee" Kimball works as a bookkeeper for a private investigation firm near Sun City, Arizona. She's also engaged to one of the private investigators, Marshall Gregory, and just wants to have a quiet life with him. Unfortunately, that's never going to happen. Her mother Harriet lives in Sun City West, a retirement community for active seniors -- or, in Harriet's case, seniors with overactive imaginations. Every time something occurs, Harriet's sure she or one of her friends is going to be either a suspect or murdered in their beds.

When a local woman named Billie, or the deli-witch, as Harriet and her friends call her, is found at the bottom of the bell tower in the library, and Harriet wants Phee to ask her boss to investigate. But both he and Marshall are on the trail of local horse thieves, and can't be located half of the time due to spotty cell phone signals. That, of course, only leaves Phee, who dreads once again even agreeing to help.

Harriet is afraid if the case isn't solved, then she'll lose her chance to be on television (long story) and so Phee is suckered in once more. What results is another hilarious episode in A Day In the Life of Phee and Her Hysterical Mother. Its' fun, feisty, over-the-top, and one of the most humorous books I've read in awhile.

Phee, of course, has her thoughts given only to us, the reader, and they are worth reading the book alone. We follow along as she tries to rein Harriet and her friends in, something that is never going to happen, and she's on the trail of a killer once more. But when she starts questioning people, there isn't a single one who has anything good to say about her, which makes Phee's job more difficult.

Toward the end she has to ask for help from someone she never thought she'd need to -- and when Harriet and this person get together the results are truly a hoot. Oh, yes, let's not forget Harriet's Chiweenie, Streetman -- in all his glory as an amorous pup out to make a conquest and strutting his stuff while making Phee crazy.

When Phee discovers that what she's chasing and what Marshall is chasing might be connected (no surprise there; it's in the blurb) the climax comes together in so many ways that the entire thing has another funny scene that no one could have seen coming.

I have read every book in this series, and each one is more delightful than the last. This one is no different, and I eagerly await the next in the series. Highly recommended.

I was given an advance copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review.

Fun. Good ol' fashioned fun. That's how I'd describe "Saddled Up 3 Murder" in short. Loved it and am still grinning as I remember some of the images the plot conjured up.

It's been a while since I last visited Phee and friends, not to mention her mother's tight circle of friends from the Sun City West retirement village. I immediately felt right at home but, no fear, new readers, as author Eaton does an excellent job showing us who each of these characters are as well as how the pieces all fit together. This is a fun read with lots of laughs, many even during some otherwise tense moments, go figure. I mean, even Phee's Roomba gets an action scene, so to speak, during the story. And what the heck, if anything, could the case of the stolen horses have to do with the murder?

I liked the characters, even the frequently over-the-top fretting ones of her mother's Booked 4 Murder book club. Or, are they over-reacting? I mean, one of them may have seen more than she realizes when a murder is committed. Could she be in genuine danger or have they all just watched to many murder mysteries. With boyfriend Marshall out of town on another case, Phee is on her own. She wants to help the ladies although, quite frankly, she admits that part of the reasoning is as much to keep her mother off her back as the desire for justice.

Phee and the ladies definitely need a hero to save the day and that hero comes from the most unexpected place. Nope, not telling. You'll have to read the book to find out. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with more than a dash of humor, this one is for you.

Thank you NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for letting me spend some time with Phee.

My third in this series although it is the ninth instalment, Sophie Kimball (aka Phee), an accountant/bookkeeper working for a private investigative agency, Williams Investigations, makes a great amateur sleuth. Its approaching Spring and preparations for the annual Bye Bye Birdie festivities, an event that marks the departure north and east for the "snowbirds", are underway. Phee gets herself involved when the town's "deli-witch", Billie C, falls from the bell tower. But did she fall or was she pushed? And what about the stolen horses?

Set in Sun City West, Arizona, Saddled Up 4 Murder was well-crafted, swift-paced, witty and thoroughly entertaining. The mystery was very engaging and I was kept guessing in this lively yarn of surprises. There are quite a few instalments for me to catch up on and I can’t wait to visit Phee and her mum's little dog, called Streetman, in Sun City again. There might even be a wedding in the offing - who knows? Very highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Beyond the Page Publishing via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.

Review:

There are a few things I know for sure when I pick up a cozy mystery from this series. First, there will be many opportunities to laugh. A lot. Especially at the antics of Phee’s mother Harriet and her neurotic dog, Streetman. Others are that the mystery will be more complex than anticipated, and no matter who I think the bad guy is, plot twists will prove me wrong. These things hold true in Saddled Up 4 Murder, set in one of Arizona’s active adult cities, Sun City West.

Phee moved to the Phoenix area a couple years ago and now works for Nate, a detective she worked with in the Mankato, Minnesota police department. He opened a PI firm in Glendale. Her fiancé, Marshall, is also from the Mankato PD, and is now Nate’s partner. Phee is the bookkeeper/ accountant, as she had been in Mankato, and the self-described queen of snooping around.

Harriet and her friends have a book club called Booked 4 Murder. Somehow, people get murdered around Harriet and her friends and Phee gets dragged into the middle of them. Sometimes she genuinely wants to protect her mother, and other times she is guilted into snooping around. The sheriff’s department sometimes hires Nate and Marshall’s firm to consult when their manpower isn’t sufficient, so they – and most people around Phee – are well acquainted with Harriet and Streetman.

Nate and Marshall have been hired by the owner of a five-star dude ranch to find who stole three of his trail horses. As they talk with the rancher’s neighbors, they learn that others have also had trail horses disappear. Soon they are tracking horses from around the state.

Harriet called Phee regarding the murder of Billie, nicknamed the deli-witch. She was a crabby woman who worked at the deli counter of a local grocery store. Harriet’s friend Lucinda regularly did doctor-advised stair exercises, going up and down the stairs of the library bell tower. One morning Billie pushed Lucinda out of the way as she blew up the stairs to do her exercises. After Lucinda went into the library, Billie was found dead at the bottom of the stairs. Exams prove that Billie had not fallen by accident. An altercation had sent her to the bottom. Lucinda was not a suspect in Billie’s death. She is afraid to stay alone, however, after being pushed in front of a line of cars, thinking the killer saw her and wants to silence her.

Harriet also wants the killer found, and not just for her friend’s peace of mind. The annual Bye Bye Birdie event, in which they celebrate the winter visitors going home, is imminent. Harriet and two friends will make announcements from the bell tower. A local TV show, Sonoran Living, will be there to film a balloon release from the bell tower, and Harriet wants her moment on the air. If the bell tower remains closed, Harriet won’t be on TV. Since Phee has helped solve other murders, she wants Phee to get involved again. While Nate and Marshall are meeting with people around the state whose trail horses have been stolen, Phee is trying to solve a murder.

I love how well the characters have been developed throughout the series; I can almost hear and see Harriet and her book club friends. Despite being closer to Harriet’s age than Phee’s, I have much empathy for what she goes through to keep peace with her mother. Even those who are in this mystery only are defined with excellence. One of my favorite lines is about Billie, who “didn’t ruffle people’s feathers, she plucked them out one by one.”

Billie made many enemies since moving to Sun City West, due in part to her rudeness to the deli customers. Phee has many leads to follow, from former co-workers to the people in the Boomers’ Club and each activity group Billie was part of. Phee even went to a festival where wicca covens were celebrating beltane. There were many LOL moments before the bad guys were caught, but the resolution had some huge surprises and was completely satisfactory. While some of the occurrences were a bit far-fetched, this mystery is a delightful escape in the Southwest desert, and I highly recommend it!

I always end up laughing when I read a book in this series. Between the book club ladies and that little scamp Streetman, I'm always giggling at something! I can just picture Phee running around like she's putting out fires first with the ladies, then her mom, and having to deal with Streetman's just the icing on the cake, well for comedy reasons, not for Phee's sanity, lol.

I wasn't sure how horse thefts and the murder at hand connected, but I was pretty sure I was gonna find out because these authors are great at tying up loose ends and making things connect just right. I loved how Streetman got to play a pretty important part in one section of the takedown. He's such a stinker but it's good he's like that sometimes! I hadn't guessed the killer either. Ann and Jim are always good for a great surprise.

I know the series switched publishers, but I'm so happy the covers remained fairly the same. While the art looks a touch different, it's still captured the cuteness and rascally-ness of Streetman as well as the Arizona landscape. I literally can't wait until a future book with Phee's wedding, but I'm really more eager to see what Streetman does. I'm sure his picture on the cover's going to be awesome since Harriet's already got his outfit planned. If it was ever possible to feel like a second fiddle at your own wedding, I have a feeling Phee's gonna feel like that, lol. But it'll be such fun!

What a fun read!

At Bagels 'n More, Phee is listening to her mom and her book club ladies discuss the deli-witch. A mean woman by the name of Billie C, who spreads her ill-temper beyond the supermarket deli. Louise's encounters with her involve force.

Phee's fiance and boss are called in to investigate horse thievery, which pulls them out of town. When Phee gets notified by her mom, that the deli-witch is dead and someone saw Louise leaving the tower right before Billie was found. With pressure from her mother, who is worried about her big moment being ruined if the killer isn't caught, Phee finds herself doing some sleuthing of her own.

I was intrigued by Phee's Aunt Ina who seemed like a free spirit. I laughed about the Roomba and Streetman incident that would be a rude awakening! Streetman deserved his cowboy attire after his heroic endeavor. I enjoyed knowing what Phee was thinking in her head with her quips added in. Good mystery with some humor!

Saddled Up 4 Murder" the 9th instalment in the Sophie Kimball Mystery series by J.C. Eaton. With a killer on the loose and horse thieves plaguing the area, it’s up to Sophie “Phee” Kimball to corral the clues and bring an outlaw to justice . . .

I found myself engrossed in the story and reading it in almost one day. I love the characters which are well developed. There is plenty of humour, too with Harriet and Streetman her Chiweenie and the rest of her crew from the Sun City Retirement Community.

The mystery is interesting, well plotted as well as full of twists and turns. Always an entertaining, fun read. This is one of my favourite series and I always buy in Paperback as I know I will read again.

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends.

Phee lives in Arizona near her mother’s retirement home community. She’s a bookkeeper for a small investigative office and is engaged to one of the partners. When the partners are called out on a case of horse thievery, Phee is called to investigate a death near her mom’s community. There a lot of interesting characters in this book. The characters alone are worth reading the book for. The two mysteries are both interesting (stealing horses!) and the end results are unpredictable. This was my first read in the series and I really enjoyed it

Sophie (Phee) Kimball is an accountant for Williams Investigations in Glendale, Arizona. She often finds herself unofficially in the middle of murder investigations at the urging (make that insistence) of her mother and her mother’s friends who all live in the popular retirement area of Sun City West. As usual, Phee’s trying to work around the seniors, and their involvement in her investigation is always a source of humor.

In Saddled Up 4 Murder, there are dual mystery threads. Billie, a very unpleasant deli worker, is murdered. Sophie needs to find the perpetrator before one of the elderly ladies who was in the area at the time of the murder is attacked to silence her. Also, and very importantly, the Bye, Bye Birdie Festival is coming up soon when the full-time residents say farewell to the snowbirds. They have a deadline for purchasing balloons for the event and Phee’s mother wants it to be such a success that she gets interviewed on TV. None of this can happen if the crime scene remains cordoned off with yellow tape. The other thread is a string of horses being stolen. Nate, the owner of the detective agency and Marshall, Phee’s fiancé, are hired to track down the horse thieves. It is a hard job given the large area of rugged land they need to cover. In addition, there is no clear motive as these are not expensive race or breeding horses; they come from ranches all over Arizona.

At first I was a little irritated by the amount of time spent in the book on the lack of cellular connectivity and the trouble it causes. Upon further thought, having lived in the West for over 30 years (i.e. since before there were cell phones), I realized that their connection problems were actually very realistic and, in this case, pertinent to the plot. So often I see shows where the main characters are out in the middle of nowhere and have cell phone service. Even in 2022, that is not a realistic scenario.

As always with a J.C. Eaton cozy, the mystery is solid, the descriptions are on target, the characters come alive, and both the situations and dialogue are funny. No Sophie Kimball mystery would be complete without Phee’s mother’s dog, Streetman. The little Chiweenie plays a major role in this book! So, put on your cowboy hat and boots and saddle up for a fun, western cozy mystery.

I would like to extend my thanks to NetGalley and to Beyond the Page Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I had so much fun with this latest in the series; I loved it! Sun City West is one of the biggest retirement communities in the Phoenix, Arizona area, and Harriet and her close friends in the Booked 4 Murder book club get involved with more than their share of murders. When they get involved, there are a couple guarantees – there are many hilarious scenes, and she will have her daughter, Phee, her boss, Nate, and fiancé, Marshall, involved. Nate owns a private detective firm in nearby Glendale. Marshall is a partner, friend, and investigator, and Phee is the bookkeeper.

Harriet’s friend, Lucinda, had just left doing her stair exercises at the library bell tower one morning when learning that Billie, a grumpy old woman who worked at a nearby deli, had fallen to her death down the stairs of the bell tower shortly after they passed each other. Forensics proved she had been pushed down the stairs to her death, but Lucinda had not seen anyone else in the area while she was there. Soon afterwards, someone pushed Lucinda in front of a car, and she is terrified that whodunit thinks Lucinda knows who it is, so Harriet wants the case solved now. Harriet has a personal reason for the quick solve which involves the upcoming Bye Bye Birdie event that celebrates the departure of the winter visitors aka snowbirds.

Harriet will have to settle for Phee looking into the murder, as Nate and Marshall have been out of town investigating the theft of trail horses from several ranches. Phee is torn in several directions, as she wants to help Nate and Marshall, but Harriet demands her help, also. And there is nothing like watching Phee, aided by the quirky and demanding seniors, try to find whodunit.

There are several plot twists and turns in this fast-paced zany cozy that eliminate a few of the suspects. Billie is one of those people who has far more enemies than friends, so it isn’t a simple process. Phee makes her requisite early morning visit to the dog park with Harriet’s neurotic pup, Streetman, so she can meet one of the best sources of information in the area. She and the book club members even end up going to a wiccan celebration in search of whodunit. There are surprises throughout, and a completely satisfactory ending. I highly recommend this, and the rest of the series, to those who enjoy well-written, funny cozy mysteries with both middle-aged and mature sleuths in a gorgeous southwest desert setting.

Saddled Up 4 Murder by J.C. Eaton is a modern take on the ole' horse stealing criminals, and Phee steps right in the middle of it all. Streetman saves the day.
What do a bell tower, stolen horses, and a Chiweenie have in common?
That sounds like the beginning of a joke, but honestly, you have to read this one. I love the whole Sun City West group, from the crazy book club ladies to the pinnacle-playing guys and their crazy pets. It seems that Streetman has some hidden talents. Oh, and don't forget Aunt Ina, connections.
The Mysteries
Nate and Marshall head out of town to investigate a series of horse thefts. This leaves Phee available to investigate the death of the deli-witch Billie. Billie was into so many bad things. Hello, just the topics of books she borrows from the library tell that tale. Oh, and their library has a bell tower which allows the patrons to use the stairs for their cardio fitness. The first part of that sentence is cool, but the second part makes me wonder about the library's liability.

Harriet, of course, is the mastermind behind getting Phee to go sleuthing. But I do believe that Phee is starting to like this investigating thing. Although, if Phee doesn't figure this out so that Harriet can be on Sonora Living, Phee may need to move far away from Sun City West.
Saddled Up 4 Murder CRAugusta
Augusta is the receptionist at Williams Investigations. She is from the midwest transplanted for the weather, but she doesn't understand the whole of Harriett's world. Augusta cracks me up. I never know what is going to come out of her mouth. Sometimes it's good advice. I can't help but laugh and shake my head. I don't know how Phee keeps her inner voice so quiet. I am sure that mine would slip out once in a while. Although it seems that is ok, seriously, the book club ladies say what is on their minds.
For the next four or five minutes, while Augusta made our coffees, I babbled on nonstop, giving new meaning to William James's definition of "stream of consciousness." Augusta took it all in with a deadpan expression that didn't change.

"I'm not sure if what you want to do is called leverage or quid pro quo, but trust me, it didn't work for the politicians and I'm not sure it will work for you, she said.

"All I want is to find out what animal gave Billie those wounds. It could be the answer to her death.

"I doubt the animal was the one she wrestled with at the top of the tower."

"No, but it might be the reason for the altercation. The way I see it, I'm in possession of evidence and I tracked down a suspect the deputies completely ignored."

"You're lucky Ranston and Bowman don't arrest you for interfering with a crime investigation. Unless of course you intend to have your newfound acquaintance cast a spell on them."

"Very funny. What I do intend to do is call Deputy Ranston as soon as I get into my office. He wants to expedite this investigation as much as I do."

Five Stars
I always enjoy picking up one of these mysteries. I never know what Phee, Harriett, and Streetman will get into. Saddled Up 4 Murder is no different than the others. I like the introduction of Wicca, and the horse thefts combined with the antics of Streetman the Chiweenie make the story humorous and plausible. My rating for Saddled Up 4 Murder by J.C. Eaton is five stars. If you haven't read a book from this series, grab one and give it a shot. I highly recommend this series.

Saddled Up 4 Murder by J.C Eaton was an entertaining cozy mystery, taking place in Sun City, Arizona. The sleuth is Sophie Kimball, who gets involved mostly at her mother's behest, very often to keep from having to babysit her mother's dog. The author's style is very entertaining with regular asides in the form of thoughts, which would start something with her mother if uttered aloud. He mother has a cadre of lady friends who have packed social schedules and manage to still interfere in her life. Sophie works for an investigator and is engaged to another one. They are currently working on a case involving stolen horses from multiple farms and ranches. She is working on the murder of the "Deli-witch," better known as Billie. Billie is a woman, all agree, who they could live without. The primary concern is freeing up the tower in which she was killed so it would be free for their annual balloon launch saying good-bye to the winter visitors.

Sophie is the bookkeeper at the investigation agency. She's good at it. But when her mother summons, self-preservation kicks in and she answers. She often has her boss and her boyfriend help but they are in Southern Arizona searching for horse thieves. Sophie is not a linear thinker, but she is a creative one. She pursues lead the police aren't even aware of, primarily because she asks questions and listens to the answers. The asides she makes remind me of myself and they are very funny. Her relationship with her mother is entertaining but not out of the norm. She also has a good relationship with the receptionist/office manager at the agency. This woman has no intention of leaving the office to investigate, but she lends a helping ear and is a point of contact for them all. This was a terrific book. I'll be reading more.

I really enjoyed this book a lot. Lots of plot twists and plenty of red herrings. I had to keep changing my mind on who I thought the murderer really was. In the end, it ended up being the person that I had originally thought. However, I enjoyed all of the rigamarole getting to that conclusion. You never knew from which moment to the next where it was going.

This was my first book out of this series, and it definitely kept my attention enough to want to check out the other previous books. Sophie was a very likeable character and I think I would enjoy her boyfriend a lot more once I get to see him more in books. So, I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book.

I loved the story. It is something original that you don't think about as much anymore as you used to have to in the past. I mean, who knew that people still stole horses? Sophie's mom and aunt were great. They had so much character that it was hard not to like them, even though it seemed like they got on Sophie's nerves from time to time. I really liked them a lot. Especially Streetman. I am a sucker for animals in general. Especially dachshunds.

Just a fun time all around to be had by anyone who reads this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries and adventures.

Thanks to Net Galley, the author, and the publisher for the ability to read this book. All opinions are honest and are mine alone.

When a murderer strikes in Sun City West, Phee Kimble’s mother coerces her into sleuthing to find out who killed the most hated woman in the area. With Nate and Marshall off on a case, Phee is on her own this time around. How will Phee manage the case with no help from her fiancé? More over how will she manage her Mother and the book club ladies without Marshall there?

As Phee starts talking to people she doesn’t feel like she’s making much progress, but somehow, she keeps on keeping on and eventually gets some good intel and manages to put herself, her other, Streetman, her Aunt Ina and a couple of covens in the middle of a mess that’s bigger than just the murder of a hated woman. What will happen next, even Phee doesn’t know. With no phone reception in the area and no way to call the police, they need to think quickly and figure out what they can do to keep everyone safe until the police can be contacted and get there. This could be the end of more than just a Wiccan celebration…it could be the end of Phee and her family.

A really fun cozy series that I adore, along with the wine series they write as well. You can’t go wrong with this cozy full of eccentric characters, one neurotic, but adorable, chiweenie, and a family of women who seem to stir the pot. A good read every time.

Saddle up for a fun ride!

This is the ninth book in the Sophie Kimball mystery series, but the first book I have read.

This book involves the mysterious fall off of the Sun City West library tower, of a woman that many hated. It is up to Sophie, "Phee," to lasso in the killer, before the annual Bye Bye Birdie Fest, and her mother's chance to appear in "Sonoran Living," television show.

I really enjoyed the story, and had to laugh at many of the crazy situations that Phee finds herself in.Sophie is an easy character to like. I love how her character seems to get herself out of tight spots. She jumps right in to solve this case, even though her reasons seem fairly silly.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The characters are fun, the plot moves along well, and the story is enjoyable. My only critique is that the two story arcs going throughout most of the book, are only somewhat related, and the original mystery gets tied up , almost as an afterthought.

The dog, Streetman, is quite the character, and has a huge role to play in this story. I am curious to know if he plays as big of a part in their other books.

I look forward to reading the other books in this series.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review of the book.

Saddled Up 4 Murder is the 9th Sophie Kimball mystery. I’ve read each one and enjoy visiting Sun City West and the shenanigans of its residents. Sophie “Phee” Kimball has an interesting way of looking at things. She finds connections by looking into the smallest details.
Billie, aka the “deli-witch”, dies after a fall in the library tower. There are a number of trail horses stolen in the counties south of Phoenix. These two events seem unrelated at first, but are connected in ways the reader suspects before Phee makes the connection.
Phee has some outlandish ideas this time around, and the simple fact of her being known across the retirement communities is part of what keeps her from harm.
Streetman, Phee’s mother’s dog, plays an important role in the story. I admit Streetman bugs me as a character because Phee’s mother treats the dog so much better than Phee.
I missed having Marshall around for most the book. He is a good match for Phee and is supportive of Phee and all the baggage (mother and friends) she comes with.
I enjoyed the intricacies of the story. This is well-written mystery and a good addition to the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review the book prior to publication.

When a series gets to this point, they often times are running out of steam. Happy to say the authors are not following that pattern. This is the best of the series.

Antics of Mom’s book club are all but eliminated. Those ladies are all there but none of their behavior is beyond belief. The conduct of the dog is even toned down to such a level as to also be in the realm of reality. Aunt Ina appears sane. And Augusta continues to be the glue that holds the investigative office together.

Phee is involved because, even though middle aged, she has yet learned to say “no” to her demanding mother. She agrees because the request seems harmless enough. But Phee is quickly able to ferret out abundant clues and developments not discovered by the police. What she discovers through her unconventional methods and sources she quickly passes on to the authorities.

Still no further personality development of the book club members. All are still interchangeable except one has a parrot. Maybe readers are supposed to accept them as nothing more than background. And in this book that works.

My only thing question, and likely I missed it, is what kitchen accoutrement will Rolo be receiving as payment from the agency?

This 9th in series was such a fun read that I read it cover to cover. Readers of this charming series find ourselves laughing out loud at the antics of the retirement village where Phee and her Mother reside. .I have enjoyed this series from the beginning and hope it will continue. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley. My review opinions are my own.

This was a fun combination of old west horse thieves, murder and laugh out loud fun. Phee's Mother has a mystery to solve with her book club and enlist Phee to help. With her boyfriend out of town Phee agrees and soon she is involved in red herrings and clues from all directions.

The writers of this series are a husband and wife team brillant at creating fun characters and good mysteries. I loved this next in series and hope the series will continue. Well done to the authors. This is one of my favorites of the entire series.

Horse thieves in southern Arizona? Improbable? Not impossible. While Phee’s boss and her fiance, private investigators, hit the trail to track down the thieving outlaws, Phee is left to poke around about the suspicious death of an unpopular Sun City West resident. The most recent addition to the Sophie Kimball mysteries is populated with the zany members of Phee’s mother’s book club and, of course, her incorrigible pup, Streetman. Can Phee follow the clues to the killer? Will the thieves be corralled before more horses disappear? The intricate plot seamlessly blends current events in southern Arizona with its historical “wild west” beginnings. Grab your best Stetson, saddle up your favorite armchair, and gather ‘round to watch the action. Hang on and prepare for a hilarious ride through the final climactic scene. See you at the campfire, partner.

Phee's mom has her running around, trying to solve the murder of a local harridan known as the "deli-witch". But the mystery runs deeper than Phee could ever imagine. Can she solve the clues and stop a killer before anyone else gets hurt?

Fun, fast-paced, and intriguing mystery with danger, lots of twists and turns, laughter, and zaniness. I chuckled many times at everyone's antics, while also enjoying the overall mystery. Gotta say, Phee has much more patience in dealing with her mom and crew than I would ever have. LOL
Streetman definitely earns his doggie treats in this one.

Many thanks to Beyond The Page Publishing and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.

Saddled Up 4 Murder was just the book I needed to get me out of a reading slump. It was hilariously funny there were so many parts that had me laughing out loud. Also being from the Phoenix area I love how the author stayed true to Sun City West and the surrounding cities. I even discovered there was a street named after my dog Meekers. I'm particularly found of Steetman who's cover photo looks like my other dog Vinny. I'm going to have to go back and read the other books in the series because if they are half as good as this one I'm truly missing out.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Beyond the Page Publishing via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion

This is one of my favorite series, the kind that will always chase away the stress. Phee and her mother along with various members of their retirement community are out to solve a mystery on their own. The much disliked deli-witch has fallen from the library tower and off they go. Even Streetman, her mother's Cheweenie dog, is part of the investigation.. The mystery is well constructed but the laughter - that's the best part. Now I'm ready for the next book. As they say, laughter is the best medicine.
My thanks to the publisher Kensington and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
