Moonbrook Magic #1

A Recipe for Magic

Rate this book
Visit Moonbrook for free until Valentine's Day, and have a magical time!
When they touch, it’s magic. The only problem is, he doesn’t believe in magic. What’s a witch to do?

Trixie Tompkins has sworn off dating—explaining she’s a witch never goes well, and it’s not worth the heartbreak. She’s perfectly content just baking enchanted treats at her mentor’s bakery. But when Magda passes, she leaves everything to her grandson, Rafe. Trixie’s girlhood crush, who moved away years ago.

Now he’s back, and distractingly hot, and his touch sends magic tingling through her skin. Which makes no sense, because he doesn’t even believe in Moonbrook’s magic anymore.

And if Trixie can’t change his mind, he’s going to sell to the highest bidder.

Rafe Greensbury didn’t expect his estranged grandmother to leave him everything, but she did. Including some property that a client of his architectural firm would love to develop. The catch is, he has to stick around Moonbrook for a few weeks.

Which means more time with his gorgeous childhood friend Trixie. Great, except when they touch, delusions that took years to forget come flooding back. So he probably shouldn’t have asked her to show him around. Or suggested that she might convince him not to sell.

Especially since the deal is already as good as done.

Welcome to Moonbrook, where the magic hides just out of sight.

Visitors see a cozy town known for enchanting festivals. What they don't see are the horns, tails, and fangs. A veil of magic lets witches, sirens, and minotaurs mingle undetected with outsiders.

In Moonbrook, even the monsters belong.

If you're looking for a sweet, magical romance with some steamy chemistry but no explicit content, you'll find yourself right at home in Moonbrook.

This is such a cute and cozy book to dig into during fall. The characters are all likeable in their quirky ways. This is really just a low stakes warm and fuzzy clean romance with a ton of fun supporting characters in a peculiar magical small town.

Not again!! :<

I finished reading A Recipe for Magic really late last night (aka early this morning). It was such a cute book until...

Semi spoilers ahead...

The third-act breakup, where the FMC REFUSES to hear the MMC out, won't answer his phone calls or texts, then blocks his number. I was really angry while I was reading this and wanted to throw my phone across the room because I could believe the author did this. I wanted to wait to write my review, until after I'd calmed down, but it still really irks me. I can't even remember the couple's names because I'm still frustrated. And, again, I really liked the rest of the story! The third-act breakup without communication is my biggest pet peeve in books because it is SO overdone, and it spikes my hackles like no other. Followed closely by the grand gesture (usually from the guy because, of course, it's always his "job", whether he was in the wrong or not) and, yup, this book has that too. So, she can change her mind about sweet-talking him into not selling the Green, but he can't change his mind about actually selling? The second his actions are called into doubt, she flies off the handle and accuses him of lying but doesn't even give him an opportunity to explain? Sure does sound like love to me. Not. She can be mad--good! I get mad too and don't want to talk to whoever made me angry. Be mad! Don't answer his phone calls or texts for a while. But then hear him out. Don't act like a toddler with a temper tantrum. That's exactly how this FMC acted, and then the MMC had to "prove his love" to her, not once, but twice, while she sat there and pouted. It totally ruined the whole story. Potential 5 stars down to three. (Honestly, I was tempted to go down to 2 stars, but I really liked everything else.)
Having said all that, I am going to read the next book in the story, as I'm really interested in Mel's story. I'm REALLY hoping the author doesn't do this garbage again.
Cute premise of a cute town where paranormals can roam freely because the Moonveil lets humans see only other humans.
No foul language. No sex scenes.
Still can't recommend.

This was a new author for me that I really enjoyed. It is a sweet romance in a quirky paranormal town. I'm grabbing the textbook and reading it right away! Then, I'll see what else the author has written.

Amazon synopsis:
Trixie Tompkins is done with guys who don’t already know she’s a witch. She’s had her heart broken enough for one lifetime. And then her childhood crush Rafe Greensbury walks back into her life, looking way too good. Turns out he’s inherited his grandma’s bakery—which was supposed to be Trixie’s—and he’s looking to sell.

Even worse, his touch sends magic tingling through Trixie’s skin. Which makes no sense, because he doesn’t even believe in Moonbrook’s magic anymore. He thinks it was all just childish games.

Which means she can’t let herself fall for him, no matter how he makes her feel.

Unless she can figure out the unexplained magic that’s sparking between them, and show him that it’s real. And convince him not to sell the bakery she loves.

But is it worth the risk to open herself up to a man who might never accept who she really is?

A cozy baking romance set in a magical filled small town

Trixie loves working in the bakery where she can infuse her baked goods with little touches of magic that helps make people’s lives just a little bit better. And she loves her town of Moonbrook whose magic veil means that all kinds of magical and supernatural beings can live unseen side by side with humans. But when her bakery is inherited by a friend she hasn’t seen since childhood who no longer believes in magic, everything she loves may be threatened.
Rafe hasn’t been back to Moonbrook in years, but coming back to town when his grandmother left him all her property has brought back some uncomfortable memories. Did he really believe in magic and fairies and all that nonsense? It seemed so real when he was a kid, but he’s grown up now, he shouldn’t be seeing these odd things … or catching feelings for the childhood friend he left behind.

This is a sweet and cozy story- fun characters, adorable small town Autumn setting, low stakes, animal familiars, a couple of cute kids. I loved the descriptions of the town’s festival events - the Scarecrow making contest in particular, and there’s lots of fun magic. It’s a fun, relaxing read (although there’s a mildly irritating 3rd act misunderstanding - which didn’t stop me from immediately starting book 2!)

Trixie is a small-town witch who loves her job at the bakery and the infusion of magic in the baked goods. The fate of the bakery and her love of carrying on the legacy lies just out of reach in a lawyer's hands.

Rafe is a architect guy from out of the area but has inherited all his estranged grandmothers' items in Moonbrook. I love the stipulations in her will. He doesn't believe in the paranormal that surrounds this town.

As they get more intimate, many truths must be revealed on both sides. Still, I love the fated maté's combination of familiars and magic in the story. There are ups and downs in this magical mess of a story for Rafe and Trixie. This story does get Ya steamy with a bit of intimacy, but nothing overly deep. The adults are mature, but the story's focus isn't on intimacy but on the romance and magical nature of this fantastic town and its supernatural occupants.

But with each moment and new revelations, you can see these two growing closer together. I love the ending of this enchanting story. Trixie and Rafe, their familiars, and all the friends in this small town make this a magical read.

This book was SO cozy and sweet and magical!! I adore the town of Moonbrook, and honestly wish it was real so I could go visit (or just live there). The characters were all great, and I love that even the side characters had such depth! Just an all around amazing read! I'll definitely be reading the rest of the series (I think its a series of standalones, which I LOVE)!

An enchanting story

I enjoyed this story and the characters who were described so vividly that I felt as if I knew them. I loved the humour and the drama which, combined together made an enjoyable story. Millbrook seems like an amazing place to live.

Magical romance

Light story, fun read. A town where magic takes hold. Great community spirit. Happily ever after. With vampires that can take centuries.

Light and enjoyable

To say this was a cute story doesn’t do it justice. It was fun and sweet but had a “lesson” in it that will resonate with all. I enjoyed.

One of my favorite books I read all year! It was so cozy- it was like autumn in a book sprinkled with fairy dust. Mythical creatures? You know I love that. Absolutely enchanting, I loved it.

As a fan of magic realism I'm not sure what to think about a town full of unrealistic creatures. They act like humans, but how do they function like people with their hooves and claws? Still, it was fun to imagine. What annoyed me about this book was the poor grammar used by every main character even though they were supposedly well-educated. "Her and her friend" and "me and so-and-so" don't belong in a well-written novel.

Sweet and cute with two good, kind characters. There were a couple of things I thought they could have done differently at the 3/4 mark, and some of the grammar was a little wonky, but, in all, a very satisfying read.
