Save London from an impending vampire apocalypse? Sorry, my week is all booked.
That’s a book pun—I’m a librarian. Specifically, the arcane archivist at the Witching Library in the heart of London.
Humans don’t know about the secret magical world of witches, shifters, and seers like me. So when vampires steal a dark codex from the library, no police come to save me when I’m caught in the crossfire. I’m left in a pool of blood, with a searing scratch on my arm.
When I transition and lose control of my new thirst, a dangerously powerful—and hot as hell—vampire pulls me back from the edge. Lazarus has a proposition for me: if I help him track down my sire before he can expose the supernatural world, he'll teach me to control my hunger.
If we fail, the council’s terrifying Shadowhounds will execute my monstrous sire and all his progeny. Including me.
I miss my library already.
Fans of urban fantasy with slow burn romance will love Karina Dobrev, our reluctant, introverted heroine; Lazarus Kaine, our deadly, irresistible hero; and Keith, a magical cat with impeccably high standards.
Saving my full review until I finish all the books in the series: but obviously I'm gonna love a book about an introverted librarian who becomes a vampire, and her love interest who's a 300-year-old broody vampire who reads romance novels and is a devoted cat dad to his fur baby named KEITH.
I just had to read this book because I was a librarian, and I was intrigued with the idea of a vampire librarian. Karina is a very spunky character who I’d love to meet. Add in Lazarus as a love interest, his friends, and her best friend, and you have an interesting cast of characters. While this book wasn’t perfect and had a few errors, it was a very good first book in a series setting up future ones. I’m looking forward to what’s coming next in this series. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Kristen Kova's Vampire Librarian is the first installment in the authors The Shadow Order series. 27-year-old Karina Dobrev works at the Witching Library as an arcane archivist. She has been aware that there have been attacks in London involving all three major players in town with the victims left alive. To make matters worse, Karina is a seer who sees her client murdered for a book called Codex Fiends which is the most powerful book in the Archive. It contains deadly rituals, fatal spells, and an encyclopedia of demons. If it falls into the wrong hands, trouble will follow.
Karina has the worst day at work ever by dying and becoming a vampire. What’s worse her sire is running around draining people of blood and close to exposing the existence of the supernatural community to humans. Now she has to work with Lazarus to find him before the month’s out, but what happens if she got the wrong sire?
Here’s what I didn’t like: some of the editing isn’t the greatest. Feigned instead of feint as one example and misuse of character names. Could have used another person to read it before being published, especially the second half of the book. I didn’t appreciate a lot of the banter in the second half either. Overall I think that part of the book just needed more attention.
Here’s what I liked: Keith and Lazarus being an amazing cat dad. I enjoyed the first half of the book, especially the seer part of Karina’s magic. Great cover.
Overall the story was fine, but half of the book felt rushed.
Mystery Romance cannot go wrong with this one, if vampires are your thing, then please read this one! We get the sassy but quiet Karina, who fights dirty, and the odd but serious Lazarus, a vampire elder, together they make a greatly odd team to figure out what is going on in their world! I honestly enjoyed this novel, it was a quick read and it held my attention right to the end.
I have received an advanced reader copy of this book and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
4.5 ✨ Really enjoyed this! The premise was great and intriguing from the start. Good and well thought out characters. Nice explaining of vampire lore and some of the specifics within. Found I ended with more questions than answers - I suppose I'll just have to read the next book to find out!
Kristin Kova's latest book, the Vampire Librarian was a fantastic read filled with supernaturals, mystery, danger, books, and a healthy dose of flirtation.
I love it when the main character is a book lover, it makes them easily identifiable. TSOV is told from Karina's perspective, a seer (light order) who got turned into a vampire (dark order) and she does not take it well, I mean who would. Karina is a bit of a mess. She tried her hardest to be in denial about what she's become and therefore makes poor decisions, I wanted to shake her. However, she's slowly coming around and has her moments when she isn't a mess but it's her book references that totally won me over.
Lazarus Kaine is either her rescuer or prisoner, at times it's hard to tell which. The vampire is complex, he can be dark and menacing one minute, flirtatious the next, and the man has a softer side, however, he is a total badass and not someone to cross. The banter between the pair is easy like they've known each other for longer than they have. This is a slow-burn but Laz and Karina most definitely have chemistry and I can't to see how things develop between the pair.
The story was great I loved learning about the three different orders, and I would love to learn more about them, the different supernaturals, and their powers. From what I have seen of the politics, things in the supernatural world aren't right with a shady council, evil (not dark) magic, rogue supernaturals, murders, and all kinds of stuff. Not to mention that action pack ending was crazy, there were a couple of new developments that occurred at the end that really amped things up.
Kova has written a compelling story that had me from the start. Vampire Librarian is just the first book in the Shadow Order: Vampire series and I can't wait to dive back into this world with the next book Vampire Shadow.
WARNING! Cliffhanger! No lives in immediate danger, but a fairly serious unfinished plot line leaving us hanging…
Meet Karina, seer and librarian. Attacked on the job, Karina is accidentally turned into a vampire. Abandoned by her sire, she is aided by an older vampire, Lazarus (great name for a vampire!) who teaches her how to control her blood lust. In return, Karina must help Lazarus find the vampires who attacked her…
This was an enjoyable beginning to an ongoing story. Lazarus and Karina are interesting characters that we are only just beginning to learn about, while the brief glimpses we have of certain side characters are just as intriguing. Karina is refreshingly normal; she isn’t possessed of any special fighting skills or amazing bravery… and when we do learn about Karina’s skills, they’re very much in line with her librarian role. As a start to an urban fantasy series, this was a good one with a fairly fast paced storyline, and plenty of action to keep you involved. The story was an interesting one, and I look forward to reading more.
I had so much fun reading this! Unfortunately the sequel doesn't come out until next year, so I have to wait a long time for it :(
One of my favorite things about this book is that the main character, Karina, doesn't automatically become all powerful and have all skills mastered the first day after turning into a vampire. She is completely self aware that while her new abilities make her stronger and more apt to be able to fight for herself, she does not have everything mastered and is still slightly unsteady on her feet. Karina is a strong lead and I was not annoyed by her through the book, which is always a HUGE plus.
While there is obvious a connection between her and the male lead, it is not insta-love. She is aware that she is attracted to him and has a bit of insta-lust for him, but she is not fawning over him from the very beginning and hoping her saves her at every turn.
If you are looking for a fast paced book with fun characters, a bit of mystery and intrigue, a dark atmosphere, and is addictive, this book is for you.
Ever just doing your ordinary, but slightly odd, library job in London before being thrown into the deadly underbelly of the secret supernatural world? Well poor Karina did in this one, but she got some help from Tall, Dark & Handsome along the way so…
The book was all about the characters, primarily the female main and the male main characters, their meeting and character development around the plot. This being book 1 of a series, it’s purpose seemed very much to be a short, kickstart intro to the main characters and then get into the plot more later. There were a lot of references thrown in randomly to try and make you feel for how the FMC is just an average woman, despite being supernatural herself before being a vampire.
Plot in this book was more of a setup to something larger happening, I assume, later in the series. It was there and gave reasons for the characters to interact but didn’t fully kick into gear until the end and without a whole lot of explanation.
Set in modern London, but with supernatural elements hidden from human eyes, setting feels familiar when recognisable places are mentioned while still having fantasy elements.
Writing was full of funny quips and character banter, which fits well with this style of modern/urban paranormal fantasy that focuses on the characters more than plot and random pop culture references thrown at you have you a laugh and also helped to fuel the “she’s just an average woman” feeling.
Overall this book was a fun, interesting short read that setup a larger plot line, and I’ll probably pick up book 2 at some point. After reading a lot of heavier epic fantasy this was a more chill refreshing change of pace.
Thoroughly enjoyed any and all interactions revolving around the cat, and the random “meeting the bff’s” moments were hilarious.
It did feel like her being a librarian had very little relevance to anything throughout, despite the title, which was odd (not that I expected magical librarian powers, but still)

This is a review of books I and II in the series – vampire librarian and vampire shadow.
This book(s) does some things well, and some things not so well, which is reflected in my rating. In terms of what it does nicely: the plot moves quickly and smoothly. There is action, drama, and stakes. The worldbuilding is definitely interesting, albeit somewhat underdeveloped. There are witches, demons, angels (though we are told nothing about them), vampires and more.
As for the characters, I would say the main characters are interesting and fleshed out. Karina acts the way you might expect a mostly-human-librarian-suddenly-turned-vampire to act; the Lazarus guy is interesting too. He’s a sexy bad boy but without some of the toxicity you often see in this kind of archetype. I love the cat, Keith. He’s probably my favourite character.
Then we get to the problems. Remember when I said the worldbuilding is slightly under-developed? Well, it is. It’s very unclear how the political body, the Council, actually works (are there elections?) As for the characters, the villains are pretty much cardboard cut-outs, and the secondary characters could do with a bit more work. I feel that too much screen time is dedicated to Karina and Lazarus.
The plot is a bit shaky at times. For example, in one scene, the main character’s best friend gets kidnapped by vampires and a demon, and they’re holding her in an angel temple. It’s unclear why there aren’t wards or guards in the temple, and why no angels swoop from the sky to destroy them.
One other thing I did appreciate was the presentation of the book in terms of graphics and formatting; it’s clear that effort and care was put into this.
Overall, it kept me entertained, and I’ve read worse.
Thank you Amazon @amazonbooks (Stuff Your Kindle Day 2023), and Kristin Kova @kristinkovawriter for this free ebook. “Vampire Librarian” (The Shadow Order: Vampire #1) by Kristin Kova ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Genre: Urban Fantasy. Location: London, England. Time: present.
THE SERIES: Humans don’t know about the secret magical world of witches, shifters, vampires, and seers. Shadow, Light, and Beast supernaturals. Red-haired seer Karina Dobrev (27) is an introverted arcane archivist at the London Witching Library. When vampires steal a dark codex from the library, she’s caught in the crossfire with a searing scratch on her arm. When she transitions and loses control, dangerous, powerful, sexy, 300-year-old vampire Lazarus Kaine pulls her back from the edge.
THIS BOOK: Karina wakes up undead and compelled not to remember what happened to her. New vampire Karina must trust Lazarus to protect and teach her. But he has a proposition for her: Help him track down her sire before he exposes the supernatural world through his lust for power, and he will teach her to control her hunger. If they fail, the vampire council’s terrifying Shadowhounds will execute her monstrous sire and all his progeny, including her. Can they save London from an impending vampire apocalypse?
Author Kova has written a fast-paced beginning to a new vampire series. She includes a slow-burn romance, and Keith, a magical cat with impeccably high standards! Kova doesn’t take herself too seriously and her writing reflects this. It’s fun to read, interesting, has a female lead finding her own strength, and it’s 4 stars from me! 👩🏼🦳 #stuffyourkindleday #vampirelibrarian #kristinkova
[ Rating: 3.5 out of 5 ] What made me want to read this story was the gorgeous cover, pairing vampires and a librarian together, and the plot sounded interesting. Vampire Librarian was an enjoyable enemies to lovers paranormal romance.
Karina is a librarian and seer who is violently turned into a vampire as a codex is stolen from her. Lazarus is a vampire and councilmember who helps Karina to control her thirst as a new vampire in exchange for help with finding her sire and stopping him before it’s too late and supernaturals are exposed.
I liked this story and how things connected. Everything came together full circle rather nicely. I too was invested in the mystery of whatever Lorn might be planning and why Karina was left alive to turn instead of ending up like other recent victims.
I liked Karina’s character and thought she did well adapting with this scary and unfortunate situation she finds herself in. Lazarus I didn’t like at first but eventually grew to like. That was due to the small moments/actions he took that showed he was starting to care for Karina more than he wanted yet somehow can’t resist. Also, he’s a Cat Dad and that’s always a plus.
Vampire Librarian was a good start for this series that left a lot of room for characters to develop further, for the romance to continue to slowly burn, and for the plot to thicken and present more complications to resolve in the next book.
Karina is one librarian who works at a 24/7 library open to the supernatural. One night she stays late for a client that wants one of the rarest and most dangerous books available. While waiting, she receives a horrid vision that comes true~ She is attacked after her client and is turned…what will happen to her seeing abilities? When she stumbles home and then out, she attacks her neighbor. She is stopped by another bigger force, Lazarus. The two who attacked and changed her are wanted for heinous crimes, and Lazarus is looking for them. In exchange for her help, he will teach her to control her blood lust. There is definitely an attraction between them but she will not act on it. Joined by two others, they are not on the hunt for two dangerous vamps and a demon~ When they kidnap her best friend, Karina will head into danger to save her…what will happen? Will Lazarus come to her rescue? Can he save them in time? What about her new form…what will it mean? This ends in a cliffhanger…but oh, what a FANTASTIC new series… the book is well written, the characters are developed wonderfully, feels like you are right there, humorous aspects…I have already pre-ordered the next book and cannot wait!
When I started reading this book, I wasn't sure if the librarian would be a regular person working in a vampire library, or if the librarian would be a vampire working in a supernatural library. I was almost right. The supernatural human gets turned IN the library. The premise was original, but the constant will she/won't she trust the vampire that comes to her rescue gets tedious after about the third time the heroine describes being "terrifed." Okay, we get that. She's terrified! Move on with the story.
The other issue that annoyed me about this book was the number of typos. If the author needs a copy editor for her next book, I'm happy to volunteer to help her. She did some great writing, and she deserves to produce a perfect, polished product when she's finished.
What I really liked was the dichotomy between the savior vampire and the thug vampire. It was like reading a Robert B. Parker novel, only with vampires instead of private detectives. This was a fun read, and I would recommend it to readers who like a bit of a mystery along with their supernatural romantic fantasy.
Thoroughly enjoyed this - if in honest I didn't expect to find it as endearing or captivating as I did, despite being slimmer than I'd usually want on the world building it was still super easy to visualise things and it didn't impact the punch this book packed! For me - it's a firm 4 stars minimum tbh!
It's a fun, quick read with a good plot (not seemingly over complicated, though also full of politics that I'm sure will deepen as the books continue!) and a good set of characters that currently compliment each other nicely. There is some good banter between a lot of them which makes the relationships feel authentic and not superficial.
It's got a bit of a found family vibe developing by the end of the book, and a nice little slow burn/touch her and die between the FMC and MMC, so I am excited to see how that progresses in the next book(s)!
The writing style is lovely, very captivating and the flow was right up my street. Short chapters where each held an actual purpose/stuff happening, so that brings me to the pace - which I thought was spot on.
Excited to continue the series now - my TBR list just got majorly hijacked!

I really enjoyed this book even though there were a few grammatical mistakes.
Karina and Lazarus are great characters. I especially liked the fact that the big old frightening vampire is a slave to his little bitty kitty cat. (I don't mean slave as in bondage to but rather he would do anything for his cat whose name is Keith.)
Karina is a seer who works at the witch's library when two vampires come in with violence on their minds. One scratches Karina and the other throws her hard enough across the library to kill her. But Karina doesn't die, instead, the scratch is deep enough to turn her into a vampire.
Thankfully Lazarus finds her but not before she has killed her neighbor while feeding. Lazarus is also after the two vampires at the behest of The Vampire Council. Karina is scared of Lazarus but feisty to him which sets the stage for the relationship between the two of them.
The only thing I can find fault with is that book 2 isn't due out until March of 2023!
Karine is a seer. She is a librarian in a supernatural library in London. She is meeting with a client who wishes to check out a dark codex. Instead, she is greeted by two vampires who want the codex for nefarious purposes. She is killed, but because of a scratch by one of the vampires, she is turned (into a vampire) instead. Lazarus, an elder, and member of the council, finds her and in exchange for her help in finding these vampires offers to help her navigate her newly founded life. The book is often violent, but tapered with humor, such as, Karine is a seer, and she did not see two vampires coming for the Codex? Lazarus is a very powerful vampire and yet every night he cooks these elaborate meals for his feline companion. The characters are well written and likeable. There is sexual tension, but the romance is a slow burn, which is refreshing. The story is face paced and an easy read. I enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
DNF'd around half way through when I realised not only was I waiting for something interesting to happen, I didn't really like the main character or the love interest (she's a sulky wet blanket and he was kind of a dick), nor their constant flirting and the paragraphs of her repeatedly checking him out while pretending not to be in to him.
Also I really dislike books that describe vampiric hunger/ thirst making their fangs throb, there's just something about the idea that I find so absurd it immediately ejects me from the story, and this one did it several times.
I don't think this is necessarily a bad read, especially for people who like their Urban Fantasy more on the sexy vampire romance side, but it's very much not my thing and I'm less tolerant about reading it these days.
Unassuming Librarian Karina's (FMC) life gets mixed up in a spate of murders, a Vampire Elder - Lazarus and a dangerous ancient book when she unfortunately gets killed. Vampire Lazarus is for want of a better word an oddball and not really what you'd expect a Vampire to be. I mean he owns a cat for one thing, lol. Still his banter with Karina was the highlight of this book for me. Karina is a fish out of water trying to navigate herself in this new world that shes been thrust into.
I literally read this book from start to finish in one afternoon because i enjoyed reading it so much. With that ending i cant wait to see what will happen in the next book
What a great book! This book has so much to love about it. First I love the fun relationship/ banter between Karina and Lazarus. They both have secrets or past they are not yet willing to share, but realize they need each other. Karina is definitely concerned for those around her, specifically her family. I also love her sense of adventure and her drive to always learn more. She is very smart, how she handles the end is amazing, you have to read it to see what she does. There is definitely so much more to come and I can not wait to see what happens next. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is so good!! Ok seriously Amazon has a pretty decent selection of fantasy novels but sometimes there’s a gem and this is it. There’s enough slow burn attraction with a serious storyline that has me wanting to ask so many questions. Ugh I’m geeked to read this series and want to cry because i don’t know how I’m going to wait 5 months for the next book. This is feeling unique with a depth of lore i can’t already predict which really is saying a lot. I’m now going to see if this author has more series for me to read while i impatiently wait for the next book
Karina may be a vampire librarian but she is truly a bada$$! And daddy Rus?! Say no more! I legit cannot wait for the spice, because all of this angst is driving me stir crazy! Karina and Lazarus are headed to be an unstoppable pair, that hopefully takes down the council in due time. I am glad we get a ton of action in this one, even though the first book had a bunch too! And that demon twist?! Ugh, my head is spinning! This review is all over the place but my mind is everywhere from the excitement lol. You won’t regret reading this for even a minute, well…maybe until you get to the cliffhanger! Can’t wait for book 3!
Sweet librarian gets fucked up by some shitty vamps because of an ancient book she has, they leave her to die but instead she turns into a vamp and her whole life gets thrown in to chaos! Hot vamp daddy takes her in to keep her from killing people cause he feels responsible that his progeny made her and abandoned her… but also he needs her to help find and stop his progeny from opening the gates to hell and unleashing demons…
Well that was a wild ride! But that was a terrible place to end the book! Now I need to read book 2!
3.9 At first I wasn’t sure about this one but the characters kept me into it. Especially Lazarus and Karina! There is tons of potential in their relationship, it’s definitely a slow burn and I am here for it! Anyone that knows me knows I enjoy vampire books, while this wasn’t smutty and I kept hoping it would be it has the potential to be so down the line. I’m fine with finishing the series since the books aren’t long and are cheap. But it was cute and has fun banter, a few moments made me laugh, and I’m open minded to see how they continue this story 🖤
This is a good story. Karina and Lazarus are a really good match. This woman is really smart and I loved that. This is a story that I could not stop until the end, and I want the next book yesterday. The ending is something that I did not expect and it was amazing!!! I flat out devoured this book and Loved every page!!! I received an ARC from the Author and I am Leaving this Totally Honest Review Because I think that it is AWESOME!!!
Vampire Librarian, the first book of the Shadow Order series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). I was kind of on the fence about this one. A really good premise for a plot, but I never connected with Karina's personality. Personal preference, so I'll give the book a neutral rating for story line. Although it failed to engage me, I can see how other readers may feel more connection with the characters.
This book is fast paced and very realistic, I liked that the characters behave in a life like way and even reference not behaving how a story book character would. It's a good solid paranormal story, vampires, witches, demons etc and this book plunges headlong into the story with the rules and structure of the universe it inhabits being revealed as the plot progresses. Should make a very good long running series or at least a trilogy.
This is way better than I thought it would be went pretty fast hated to see it in since the next book doesn’t come out until March. She’s a librarian who’s waiting for a client went to vampire show up there into the wall cause all the bookshelves to fall and she wakes up. You got it a vampire. Can you book interesting to read just waiting for the next one ugh lol
