Hands Off Our Hijab: Muslim Women Putting Liberal Hypocrisy On Trial

Rate this book
Why are liberal politicians banning our hijabs and niqabs?

Under the presidency of Emmanuel Macron, France had the audacity to ban Muslim women and girls under the age of 18 from wearing the hijab in public. What was the response from the liberal progressive world? Shameful silence.

So as Muslim women, how should we react to this attack on our Islamic dress code? Why do non-Muslims politicians and governments hate our hijab? How can Muslims individually and collectively support the challenges sisters are facing?

These are the questions I will be tackling in Hands off our Hijab, and I believe we need to put liberal hypocrisy on trial. I sincerely want to help Muslimahs make sense of the challenging situation and take back control of the narrative but not on their own on Allah's terms.

Inshallah, I pray this book will help you make sense of the world right now so you can move forward confident and comfortable in your hijab. It may seem like our enemies have the upper hand, but we have Allah on our the creator of the universe.

An anthology of moving, thought-provoking essays. Islamophobia and racism have victimised Muslim women at various points in their lives. The author's voice is outspoken, questioning the narrative and everything we have been doing in the name of religious intolerance and liberalism.

These authors serve as a helpful reminder that thought representation and image representation are not the same things. They clarify that wearing a hijab does not compel Muslim women to follow social traditions based on other ideological views.  The fact that wearing a hijab does not protect you from physical harassment, and speaking out about Islamophobia s make you stronger is brought to light in a much-needed manner.

Learnt so much I was not aware of. Although my book club picked Hands Off Our Hijab, I'm pleased they did because it was really eye-opening. Initially, I wasn't interested in reading it. It was thought-provoking and simple to comprehend, I wasn't expecting to love this book as much as I did.

When I first heard about this book, I knew I had to get it as soon as it was available. A book about hijabi Muslim women's experiences written by Muslim women? Yes,   I was hooked just by reading the introduction!

Hands off our hijab brings together (not the usual progressive anti-hijab,) Muslim women's voices and tackle the thorny subject of liberal Islamophobia. It does not claim to represent the experiences of every Muslim woman or to address every issue that hijab-wearing Muslim women face. That book is not possible to create. But this book is just the beginning of a movement in which Islamically minded Muslim women are reclaiming and rewriting the narrative.

Finally, a framework for Muslim women without the restrictions of having to generalise and explain, enabling each chapter to achieve a beautiful depth and provide insight and perspectives from so many spheres and intersections of Muslim female identity.

I absolutely loved this book, and I don't say that lightly. It taught me a lot more than I expected and served as a stark reminder of how much more I still need to learn. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I loved it. So well written and covers such a broad range of topics, Islamophobia, racism and sexism there’s really something for everyone to learn from. A must-read.
