When magic has returned to the world, companies start selling it—to those who can afford it and survive it.
Magic has exploded back into the world—vampires, demons, ghosts, and other creatures of legend crawled out of the shadows, finally escaping their prisons—and the power previously only in the hands of secretive societies like Skull & Bones and the fascist Thule Society has been laid bare for the entire world to see.
After the initial shock, businesses did the expected: found a way to turn magic into profit. The occult “gold rush” at the forefront of magically imbued politics built a world of wealth inequality, greed, and innovation.
Bartender Jane Auburn was an early adopter of a new drug sponsored by Pelican Pharmaceuticals that allows her to move at the speed of vampires and match the strength of demons.
Soon, she discovers the price for such powers may be more than she can pay: her life. Thrust into the front lines of toxic magic and occult corporate warfare, she will need to uncover what other skeletons these new companies are hiding. Preferably before she clocks out from an overdose or has to bite her tongue and endure her mandated corporate exploitation!
At least she was not the only one in Austin, Texas to sign up for magic in a pill. After all, as it says in all their commercials, “Pelican Pharmaceuticals: they keep you going even when you’re dead!” And how bad can the side effects possibly be?
“Dystopia explores what really happens when magic has returned to the world. It’s like Cyberpunk and Repo Men meets American Gods and Dresden Files.” —Kevin J. Anderson, NY Times bestselling author of Dune: Duke of Caladan and Clockwork Angels
“In The 7th Age: Dystopia, Rick Henz one-ups himself by dialing the action to 11. Monsters, conspiracy theories, snarky humor, and enough action to leave you breathless –this has it all. Way too much fun!” —Jonathan Maberry, NY Times bestselling author of Relentless and Bewilderness
Unlike the beans,... ...this Heinz is not full of wind! Starting with some impressive cover art and a fun "lexicon" to open this second instalment in the Seventh Age series, this is an enjoyable romp. It's a techno-fantasy thriller with vampires, hell beasts and ordinary joes, with big guns and runic chains and plots galore. It's the end of the world but not as we know it - and all the better for it. Characters such as Jane, Jack and the others make for interesting narrators and add a little spice to life, even if Jane does occasionally want to see Purgatory for perhaps the wrong reasons. After all, "even though the dead had returned, she still needed money to live" - and what a fast food joint! Throw in some gladiatorial combat and the threat of war in the background, and you're in for a good time with this "Dystopia". Looking forward to the next one, Mr Heinz.
