A Daring Proposal

Rate this book
She has loved him for as long as she remembers. He is fast discovering his newfound attachment. And now they may never see each other again. Phoebe Tunstall has lived her entire life in the shadow of her outgoing twin sister and in service to her maiden aunt. When she suddenly finds herself alone and free of all responsibility to others, she decides to heed the challenge thrown out by the man she has long admired-her brother's best friend, Lord Ingram. Frederick Ingram is reeling from the shock of learning that his first love has married someone else upon mere weeks' acquaintance. Filled with frustration, he is unable to watch his friend's little sister, Phoebe, living meekly and waiting for happiness to come to her. He tells her to live more boldly. What he does not expect is for her to take it to heart and travel to Brussels as Napoleon begins his march northward. Frederick arrives in Brussels for his military duty and-contrary to his expectation-does not find Phoebe cowering in fear at the threat of the emperor's invasion. Instead, she appears to be the center of Society with every male eye in the city on her. Phoebe is eager to show Frederick exactly what he has been missing out on all these years, and he is finally ready to declare his love. Then war breaks out.

"Sometimes men are blind to what is right under their very noses. Although blind at first, it does not mean they will stay so."

I've always been a big Jennie Goutet fan. She is so good at taking unconventional paths in her plots and in her character development. Throw in some well researched historical elements and a swoony romance and you've got the makings of some fantastic story telling.

A Daring Proposal has it all. Unrequited love, massive character growth, fantastic scene setting that hasn't been overly done, the signs of the times in war, humor, wit, and topped with a sweeping romance.

Fredrick has been blind to Phoebe's affections for many years. Phoebe is shy and has lived in the shadow of her family for too long. When circumstances arise for her to step outside her comfort zone and be "daring", her life is catapulted into the unknown and she really starts to see her true worth. And maybe...just maybe Fredrick might see it too.

This is set in Brussels where Napoleon has escaped and the country is in danger of imminent war. With the danger being so close to home it only upped the stakes and the action and the realities that we don't always have tomorrow so we need to live in the now. It was refreshing to read about life in Brussels and the people who lived beyond London society. I also really enjoyed all the scenes at the picnic, the cricket match and even the balls where Phoebe really blossoms and becomes a woman who finally shows what she's been hiding all along.

I haven't read the first 2 in this series but I can guarantee you that if you want to try Jennie's books, this is a fantastic place to start.

Regency (1815) in London & Brussels (with war
restarting after Napoleon escaped Elba). Romance:
kisses only. 3 stars.

Phoebe's identical twin Anna was married, as was
their brother Stratford, as was her bestie Lydia.
Phoebe (10 yrs his junior) secretly loved Lydia's
brother Frederick "Fred" who served as a soldier/
diplomat under Wellington. The Congress of Vienna
was in progress.

Fred thought of reserved/ calm Phoebe as a little sister.
He suggested she try something 'daring.' Lydia & her
spouse Fitz invited Phoebe to Brussels on his military
assignment IE assist in transition after war, re-mark
territory etc. On impulse, the h said yes. Phoebe felt
more socially at ease in Brussels & men were drawn
to her. Then Fred saw a whole new, more assertive
Phoebe. The only downside of the h? Her superiority
to some IE chatty Martha who later, in modern terms,
'did (the h) a solid.'

Napoleon broke out of confinement & resumed his war.
This had war scenes (not gory) & adventure. While
en route home, Phoebe and friends found a lost
someone. I liked the MCs, but something felt missing?

Alright Jennie Goutet! I see you! This book was SO fantastic. My favorite of the series, and WOW did this one bring home the fireworks for the finale of this series. Historical fans… you need this. Swoony fans…you need this. Character arc fans… you definitely need this. I have loved Phoebe from the first book in this series. She’s incredibly genuine. Frederick was PERFECT! I loved watching these two really find each other and get to know each other. This historical element was off the charts amazing. I will never think of Waterloo the same. Incredibly well written, well paced, well everything :) 5 very deserving stars from me!

Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

A Daring Proposal by Jennie Goutet is a delightful Regency novel. This is the third in the Memorable Proposal series, but definitely a stand alone novel. Our main characters, Phoebe and Fredrick, are long time friends and really see little chance of finding love with the other.

The story takes place in Brussels, Belgium in the time before and during the battle of Waterloo in 1815. This made the story very interesting to read, and was a fascinating glimpse into the society of that time in Brussels. The secondary characters added to the story and included the Duke of Wellington, Belgians, and the English people living in Belgium.

I was so drawn into this absorbing story. The wonderful themes of taking chances, sacrificing, and friendship make it a delight to read. I highly recommend A Daring Proposal.

I was given a complimentary copy and not required to write a review.

I cannot say how much I love a regency set outside of England. It gives the book a more adventurous feeling. I loved all of the newish-to-me historical details that Jennie was able to utilize to create a war-time setting. I think I often forget all of the military pies England had her fingers in during this time period as most regencies focus on the London season or house parties, etc.
Phoebe has faded into the shadows behind her more vibrant twin. Now that her sister has married, Phoebe is on her own for her fourth season. A dare and an invitation from a pair of siblings gives Phoebe the incentive to join her friend in Brussels to turn her fates around.
I love a good unrequited love. Phoebe has always loved her brother's friend - who also happens to be her friend's brother - but has come to terms with his inability to see her as anything other than "little sister". Frederick's eye opening moment to Phoebe's charms gave me gushy insides. It was terribly sweet.
Friends to lovers is not one of my favorite tropes. I have a hard time with the back-and-forth internalized expressions of love and need to "forget" but having Frederick's POV more than compensated for those feelings from Phoebe.
Thank you to the author for the gifted copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

I’m almost at a loss of words while sitting down to write this review (okay, fine, I’m laying down in bed because it’s 3 am and I just finished).

So first, I’ll say, don’t reach the mid point of this book anywhere near bedtime 😂 or you can say goodbye to bedtime.

Jennie has long been one of my favorite historical authors. She just KNOWS how to write historical romance. This book was delightfully heavy (but not dense) with history. I learned so much while enjoying this artfully crafted storyline. But the real and true brilliance of this book was 1. The straightforward, spine-tingling romance and 2. The incredibly written war scenes.

I adored this entire book. So so much. The ending was absolutely perfect! I’m sad the series is over, but I know Jennie will continue to write gems such as this… so I can’t be too mad 😉😂❤️

I stopped my normal skimming around 60% before continuing on with my rapid skimming, which is reading a sentence or on each page. I got the gist of what happens, which was good enough for me. There were too many uninteresting (to me) war details and people. And Frederick and Phoebe were just kind of blah.

I love books that both entertain and enlighten. A Daring Proposal was not only a fantastic romance, but I loved learning more about the famous 1815 Battle of Waterloo. With her characteristic eye for historical detail and ability to craft a beautiful swoon-worthy romance, Jennie Goutet delivers an amazing story that was hard to put down. This enjoyable friends to lovers romance had me on tenterhooks waiting to see what would happen next.

Phoebe’s loved Fredrick since she was a little girl. He’s always seen her as a little sister. But, when he challenges Phoebe to do something daring, she decides to take him up on his proposal and the results change everything.

Phoebe was such an endearing character. She’s kind, beautiful, but also anxious and self doubting. She’s always lived in her twin’s shadow and rather than put herself out there, finds excuses to remain hidden. Loving Fredrick for all these years, she can’t bear to go through a season watching him court other women or try to find her a suitor. When his sister Lydia offers her the opportunity to travel to Belgium, she follows Fredrick’s suggestion and bravely decides to go.

Belgium offers a new start for Phoebe. She learns to be more confident, shares her talents, and enjoys a new found popularity. I loved it when she gets the courage to sing and her long time friends are shocked at this hidden gift. I loved watching Frederick’s feelings change. That moment when he arrives in Belgium and sees Phoebe at a ball dressed in a gorgeous red gown and wowing the young men was fabulous. Suddenly seeing her in a new light, any brotherly feelings are quickly replaced by a growing romantic longing.

Loved the relationship between Phoebe and Frederick! Both suffered from the same fear of rejection. When they begin to show their true feelings, the sparks fly. I loved the cricket match and the tent scenes. I enjoyed watching Phoebe display her new confidence and strength especially as the war comes closer.

The historical aspects of the book were fascinating. I felt like I was right there in the battle with Frederick. I knew very basic details about the Battle of Waterloo, but Jennie Goutet put a new, captivating spin on the history that made me want to learn more.

Though part of a series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. Historical fiction and historical romance fans will certainly enjoy this. Highly recommend this amazing story! I received an advanced copy from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

A Daring Proposal is a captivating romance set during the time surrounding the Battle of Waterloo. Although it is the third in the Memorable Proposals series, I feel it can be read as a standalone.

I loved this book so much! I loved the characters and enjoyed the interactions between Damon and Phoebe. I chuckled more than once at their inner musings regarding each other. The romance was perfect, just what I expect when reading a Jennie Goutet book. The historical details of the story also really appealed to me. I love when I can learn things while enjoying a novel. The battle scenes depicted are fascinating and pulled me in so I felt like I was there. I might even read them to my kids when we study that period in history.

I have been looking forward to this release and I was not disappointed at all! I highly recommend it if you're a fan of Regency romance!

I read a complimentary copy and all opinions are my own.

WOW! This book is BEYOND AMAZING! It is romantic, gripping, sweet, moving, emotional, heart-wrenching, heartwarming, and so much more. Whenever I picked up " A Daring Proposal", I was whisked back in time to the Regency Era, and went on such an emotional journey with this story.

Jennie Goutet is one of my absolute favorite authors, as her writing style is visceral, vivid, descriptive, detailed, and so full of heart. While this is the third novel in her "Memorable Proposal" series, it is the first I have read in this particular series, and I so look forward to going back and reading the first two. Ms. Goutet truly knows how to bring history to life before the reader's eyes, and she seamlessly blends history and fiction to create a novel that is impossible to put down. I can only imagine the amount of research and thought that went into this book: every single moment springs right off of the page, and each scene feels authentic to the time period it is set in. Furthermore, the characters she writes all feel like such real people, and their wants, fears, desires, and needs are so clear. From the scenes depicting the Battle of Waterloo, to the scene of the men going off to fight leaving behind those they love, to the scenes where Phoebe and Frederick finally admit their true feelings for one another, to so many more, you feel right along with the characters, and so pull for them to find happiness.

Phoebe is such a kind, caring, smart, and loving young woman. For as long as she can remember, Phoebe has always loved Frederick, her best friend Lydia's brother. But, she believes that Frederick views her as a younger sister, and could never feel anything romantically toward her. When he tells her to do something "daring", Phoebe is unsure what she could possibly do. Soon, Lydia invites Phoebe to accompany her and her husband to Brussels...and Phoebe decides to take the chance and go. Never could she have imagined how this will change her life forever, and will allow her to step into her own.

Frederick is such a kind, protective, passionate, and brave man who cares deeply for those he loves. He soon is sent to Brussels as part of his regiment after hearing that Napoleon has escaped. He certainly doesn't expect Phoebe to be there, and soon regrets telling her to do something daring as he has potentially, inadvertently, put her in harm's way.

As Frederick begins to see more of Phoebe, and sees her coming out of her shell more and more, his feelings for her begin to shift, and he soon realizes he is in love with her. He is unsure if she feels the same way about him.

(Possible Spoilers!)
OH MY GOODNESS...I found myself pulling for Phoebe and Frederick to find their happily-ever-after together from the very start. They truly bring out the best in one another, and they grow together. Watching their love deepen throughout the book is simply beautiful, and many moments of theirs together brought tears to my eyes. These two are so special, and, while I know this is the last book in this particular series, I would so love somehow to see how their story continues!

Also, I just adore Lydia and Fitz! They are so loving and supportive.

If you enjoy historical romance, I highly recommend this book! I found myself turning the pages chapter after chapter to see what was going to happen next. Many moments had me on the edge of my seat holding my breath, many had me in tears, and many had me swooning. I so look forward to reading what Ms. Goutet writes next.

Thank you so much to the author, Jennie Goutet, for sending me an ARC of this book, it is simply incredible! All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Okay, wow! This book is definitely my favorite in the series!

I loved reading Phoebe's happily-ever-after and though this is a regency, the majority of it takes place in Belgium and the unique setting was refreshing.

I loved Phoebe and Frederick discovering each other even though they had been friends for years. The romance and chemistry is off the charts and I absolutely adored both characters. The picnic, the ball, the cricket game...I loved it all! I found the historical events in the story fascinating and I will never think of the Battle of Waterloo the same way.

You need this book, my friends. And if you have never read the first two in the series, you can jump right to this one without any problem. This will be one I re-read again and again and proves why Jennie Goutet is an auto-read author for me.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but a positive review was not required.

The book was on the unimpressive side of things as a Regency romance but was quite moving as a war romance. The first half of the book, which was more like a traditional Regency read, had way too much pining on Phoebe’s end and sort of an alarmingly fast change of feelings on Ingram’s end. Once the book hit the war part at around 60% percent, there was a huge surge in quality, and the book became truly compelling. I applaud the author’s thorough research and excellent retelling of Waterloo. I also like that she presented a balanced view on people who sided with either the Allies or with Napoleon. Bear the first part of you must to explore the harrowing, beautiful telling of the second part of the book. Would recommend.

This review is of A Daring Proposal by Jennie Goutet. I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I try not to include spoilers in my reviews any more so that everyone can read them. It won’t be a spoiler to tell you this story takes place during the summer of 1815 in and around Brussels, among other places. If you don’t remember your world history that well, that’s the summer Napoleon escaped from Elba and tried to reclaim France.
Phoebe Tunstall is our heroine and has spent her life supporting or taking care of others. Now it’s her turn to shine. And shine she does in the glittering ballrooms of Brussels. Society carries on while the military gets ready for both peace and war. Frederick Ingram, our hero, is with the military and is also in Brussels waiting to see what Napoleon is going to do.
This is where this book really shines. The author has woven in the backgrounds of the characters so we think we have an idea of how everyone will act, but people can surprise you. You don’t learn a person’s true character by reading about them making morning calls or dancing at balls. You learn when danger is present. Everyone has a choice. That choice defines who we are, who the characters in this book are, and who this writer is.
She writes about loneliness, loss, love, fear, courage, determination, and being true to one’s self. After countless hours of research she writes of the the days leading up to the battle of Waterloo and of the battle itself. In that one day around 48,000 men were killed, wounded, or deserted. In one day. No doctors, no hospitals, no antibiotics, no pain killers. And Waterloo is only about 17 miles from Brussels where Society was playing. But not any more. What choices do the people there make? Do they flee, start helping the hundreds of wounded who slowly crawl into town, or do they lock themselves away?
The battle in essence is a character in its own right showing the reader the best and worst of people.
This book is a romance, a story of war, but most of all about how choices make us who we really are.
It is a great book!

slow romance without much depth

Phoebe is in London for her 4th Season and dreading it. She’s pretty, has a high standing in society, and reserved. She’s also in love with her childhood friend, Fred, who thinks of her as a sister. Fred has been serving in the British army and recovering from a broken heart. The woman he loves is outgoing, adventurous and vivacious- all the things Phoebe is not. They both end up in Brussels at the time Napoleon escapes prison.

Phoebe is hoping to get over her love of Fred and make a match in Brussels. Hard to do with Fred hanging around and who is now beginning to see Phoebe as more than a child. There isn’t much more to their relationship other than their childhood and being attracted to each other. Society is full of entertainment and shopping as the British military and their allies prepare for Napoleon.

The descriptions of the times and culture were well done. The romance was slow and not very interesting. And the main characters weren’t very interesting either.

#BookReview : A DARING PROPOSAL by Jennie Goutet

I haven’t read the first two books in the series but it was no problem at all reading Phoebe’s story. This can definitely be read as a standalone. But I am now eager to read about the other characters. Frederick and Phoebe grew up together and had a close relationship despite their ten year age gap. Fred always thought of her like a sister.

This friends-to-more romance was delightful. Brussels was an interesting place. So many social gatherings that helped Phoebe in her new found confidence. She didn’t lose herself with the change, however it gave her purpose. I enjoyed that. It was sweet when Fred finally realized that Phoebe was not a little girl anymore. Lydia was a really good friend and a fun addition to the story.

On the other side of fun, we were treated with the historical details leading to, during and after the famous Battle of Waterloo. Like many people, it made Phoebe anxious. The night of the ball was emotional. The battle was full of tension and death. But also with so many fearless and loyal men, Fred being one of them. A number of high and low moments for this enjoyable historical read. It’s my favorite so far from her books.

In the past year, I have read a number of excellent novels, but this one really excels. It is well written, well researched, and romantic, coming to an exciting conclusion. Phoebe has been waiting in the wings for years to come into her own, and it takes one careless word for her to take up the offer to accompany her best friend to Brussels. Lord Ingram has always had a soft spot for Phoebe and her sister, but he has never viewed her as marriage material. A change of style and a new ballroom, one where Phoebe is the toast of the town has Frederick opening his eyes to really see the incredible young woman before him. Unfortunately, with the prospect of war looming up before them, Frederick's responsibilities consume him, and in the melee that breaks out when the first canon is fired, he fears he has lost her almost before he won her over. The novel comes to a bitter-sweet conclusion as those who have been through the realities of war are faced with the aftermath of loss and devastation, despite the well-won victory. I received a copy of this moving romance as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Phoebe had always been overshadowed in London by her more boisterous twin, Anna. But now that she has married and settled, it’s Phoebe’s turn. However another season in London is not her cup of tea. So when her best friend, Lydia, invites her Brussels she begins to think that it is time for her own adventure. She jumps at the chance when the man she has held a secret love for, tells her to “try something daring, just for herself”; but she realizes that Fredrick does love her in return and so, off to Brussels it is!

Fredrick has always viewed Phoebe as a little sister. When he finds she has left with his actual sister and brother-in-law to Brussels in the mist of a possible war, he is furious. Upon arriving in Brussels, he is captivated by the beauty in red at the first ball…until he realizes that Phoebe is that beauty!

Will Fredrick change is view on her? Will Phoebe ever receive love from the first man she fell for? Or will it forever be unrequited love?

Brussels is on the brink of war, lives and love are in the balance.

Thank you to the author for the complementary copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is book 3 in the Memorable Proposal series. Each can be read as a standalone, but the characters do carry over from one book to the next. I read all three books this month and really enjoyed them.

In this story Phoebe, the steady, shy twin of Anna, does something daring at the behest of Lord Frederick Ingram. She travels with her friend Lydia and her husband Fitz to Brussels, right before Napoleon escapes Elba and prepares to attack again. But before that threat becomes real, there are parties and balls nearly every night for the English high society and high-ranking officers, including the Duke of Wellington. In Brussels Phoebe becomes her own person, no longer in the shadow of her more vibrant twin sister and distanced from her failed London seasons. She finds her strength and true love, too. I can tell that a lot of research went into this book and it was a pleasure to read.

I received an eARC from the author. A positive review was not required and all opinions are my own.

I love when historical fiction not only transports me back in time, but teaches me a bit about history in the process. A Daring Proposal does just that as we follow Phoebe to Brussels after Napoleon abdicates the throne and is banished to Elba.

Phoebe has lived in the shadow of her twin sister, in the service of her Aunt, and in the undesirable situation of unrequited love for 4 London seasons. When told by her love Frederick that she should do something adventurous, she accepts the invitation to travel to Brussels with a friend. When Frederick finds Phoebe in Brussels, she is changed and he sees her in a new light. But is there time for love and will Phoebe be safe when Napoleon escapes and war is brought to her doorstep?

I loved that this book took place not just during the regency time period, but during a historical event, the battle at Waterloo. Such a lovely historical romance.

Oh my goodness. Talk about a sweet historical romance. This book takes place in Brussels leading up and following the Battle of Waterloo. It was sweet, exciting, nerve racking, and all together a book that should be on every romance reader’s TBR. Goutet is a wonderful story writer and I was fully Immersed, wanting to hide away with every moment I had while reading it. I feel like lately I’ve been in a little bit of a dry spell with certain romances, some of the relationships felt a little forced, but Phoebe and Fredrick’s relationship just blossomed. Truly a romance I’ll be recommending to all my book loving friends. I loved the setting, it wasn’t your typical regency, since it takes place on the continent during war time. Love, love, love this one. Go grab it!!

It bogged down for me in the middle. It makes me nervous when there is an abundance of missed opportunities and miscommunication. Then, the story moved ahead with some hope, but again slowed with a lot of... I'll never leave Brussels!
Happily, it was clean and well written.

I wasn't expecting a war story. The romance was beautiful but I did not like how much of the tale took place on the battlefield.

I also disliked the implication that shy, quiet girls must change themselves in order to be loved. Perhaps they are less likely to be noticed; but they should not have to undergo fundamental changes in order to be appreciated. This idea is especially unfitting in a Regency novel--a time when quiet, demure young ladies were considered the ideal!

I anxiously awaited this one after enjoying Anna's story but was disappointed. It was heavy on the military storyline and had more connection to the first book than the second. Phoebe's transformation seemed sudden and somewhat unbelievable to me.

I also don't love the storyline when a girl has been in love with the only guy she's had much contact with and therefore unable to form a connection with any other man. Overall a bit of a letdown to the series for me and definitely a more depressing storyline.

I felt that several of the chapters towards the end were superfluous. I couldn’t see how they added to the overall story, it seemed more like a side tangent. There were things that were missing for me to fully enjoy the book, but it’s not a bad read.

Story Notes

The third installment of the Memorable Proposals series is one that I found very well done with lots of true history, sweet romance and witty conversation wrapped up in a wonderful plot.

Phoebe Tunstall has always been the shy, retiring debutant, content to sit with her sponsor or companion while her sister and friends took the Seasons by storm. But she is tired of being overlooked and taken advantage of so she's going to do something new. On the advice to "do something daring" from her long-time friend and secret crush, Frederick, Phoebe makes a plan to leave behind the London scene and head to Brussels with her best friend. Her arrival brings many new marriage prospects and friends as well as her first opportunity to be the "belle of the ball". But there is talk of war coming given that Napoleon has escaped Elba and is gathering troops and supporters as he marches towards Paris. Frederick is the Aide de Camp of Lord Wellington and is thus called to Brussels to plan strategy and help keep the air of peace for the British citizens there. He is entirely shocked to learn that his advice to Phoebe to "do something daring" led her right into the danger zone of oncoming war. But his attempts to convince her to return to London fall on deaf ears given that Phoebe has decided to lay aside her secret love of Frederick and make a new choice of future husband from her current admirers. But Frederick is not ready to let this go and he will soon have to examine just why he is so adamant about her safety. Could it be that the little friend he has always admired for her practicality and sense has quietly made her way deep into his heart unbeknownst to him? But their newly discovered love will have to wait because Napoleon is coming and Lord Wellington is ready to stop him in Waterloo. If they can make it through this war fraught time unscathed, it will be nothing short of a miracle. But love doesn't give up, as Phoebe and Frederick soon learn. And though they must part for now, there is every cause for hope for a future together. Especially if "The Beau" has anything to say about it - and he is never wrong.

I've been on a historical fiction kick lately and, oddly enough, most of them have involved some type of war or political conflict. But they've all been different times so I've really enjoyed seeing these epic historical events through the eyes of a historical romance lens. This book in particular was clearly very well researched and carefully crafted to stay true to history while also giving romance readers the content they appreciate most. I loved the plot of the rest of the story as well as the characters and conversations but those battle scenes have definitely stuck with me. I could almost taste the gunpowder flying around and hear the yells and screams of the men fighting. Lord Wellington is one of my absolute favorite historical figures and I am always so glad to see him included in a story. A brilliant strategist and war expert, Wellington is still studied in some military academies today. He was also a consummate gentleman who had the incredible ability to keep panic from becoming overwhelming among the gentry and his own troops. Additionally, he never asked his men to do something he wasn't willing to do and often led the charge in a battle himself when the courage or spirits of his men became low. Jennie included all of these important facets of Wellington despite him being a lesser character in her story. It was really interesting to see how she tied Frederick to Wellington in a perfectly natural way and this added some great depth to the story. I am definitely recommending this story to those who like historical romance fiction with plenty of real history included. And, honestly, any avid reader will find this book very engaging and entertaining in my honest opinion. Add it to your TBR now so you don't miss reading this marvelous story.

Dear Jennie,

I love a unique regency romance story and this book checked all the boxes for me!

First, the book’s setting in Brussels is incredibly unique right out of the gate. Second, your protagonists, friends for many years, don’t wait until the end of the book to figure out their feelings. (But to any others reading this correspondence, never you fear! There is still plenty of tension, wondering, and lots of nail biting moments to come! No, I won’t tell you what to expect because I despise spoilers, but know that it is going to be good!) Finally, third, this book includes the story of the Battle of Waterloo. From a soldier’s perspective! If that isn’t unique, I don’t know what is. And I was riveted!

I loved both Phoebe and Frederick right away. They are each genuinely good and so kind. I loved Phoebe’s attitude and desire to make the best of her life, even if it’s not what she wanted at first. I admired how she would lift her head and move forward with what was right, even if it was hard. What she did for the little boy! *sigh* My mama heart was aching just then and I could have hugged her. I liked how you wrote a heroine who could be strong, who learned how to trust in herself and her instincts, but also had to work to be that way.

Did I want to shake Fredrick a bit? I’d be lying if I said no. Ha! But I also loved him. I loved that once he made up his mind, he was all in. And he was so good to his sister and Phoebe. He was selfless and caring, and loved fiercely. Such good qualities for a fabulous hero!

One thing I love about your books is how they make me feel like I’m reading a modern-day Jane Austen or Louisa May Alcott. The way you write almost feels a bit like old English and I truly love that. You have a way with her language that really appeals to me. In addition, your research is also clearly well-done and thorough. I felt as if I were present for the experience, in the time and place I was reading of. I just really love the way you write!

I’m so glad I got to read this wonderful book. It is one I will think back for many weeks and months, I am sure.

Yours,
Jessica

*Note/TW/CW: battle scenes, mentions of blood and battle wounds; lost child (ends well)
