Colonel & Mrs Richard Fitzwilliam: AKA: The Repercussions of Extreme Pride & Prejudice

Rate this book
When he is wounded, Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam is shipped back to England once he is allowed to be moved. He desperately wants to return to his Dragoons and is not happy when the medical board does not declare him fit for combat in 1810. He is told to see them and reapply in May 1811.

The Darcy parents are alive in this variation, which does not stop our villain in chief from attempting to make his move against the Darcys through Miss Georgiana (Giana) Darcy.

After rescuing Miss Darcy, William Darcy and Richard Fitzwilliam both join Charles Bingley Netherfield park. While there, they meet three very pretty Bennet sisters as the two youngest are not out. The traits of Pride & Prejudice that both Elizabeth and Darcy exhibit in canon are exaggerated for this story, which will explain the other title of this book.

Richard has vowed not to marry, or even court a lady until he is no longer a combat officer, and he is determined he will not resign until the little tyrant is defeated. Thanks to the behaviour of another, Richard and a lady are compromised at Rosings Park.

ODC will find their HEA, but the road will have some speed bumps and sharp turns in it along the way.

PLEASE NOTE: If you purchase this book DO NOT purchase 'The Repercussions of Extreme Pride & Prejudice.' It is the same story under a different name. **Warning: One of the major characters in this story (NOT either of ODC) does not survive the book, and Elizabeth marries someone who is not Darcy before ODC eventually find their HEA. This variation sees Richard Fitzwilliam much more involved that in canon. It is a longer story and yes, we follow multiple characters. Please take that into account before you buy in case the subject matter is not for you.**
We lose Fanny Bennet early and Bennet remarries, this time for love. Due to the early loss of their birthmother, the characters of some Bennet sisters (there are the 5 we all know from canon) are very different.

I have three children and after a disastrous first marriage I found my soul mate who I thought that was lost to me over 25 years ago. I recently married the love of my life. I live with my soul mate in Australasia and have three pets, two cats, Darcy and Bingley and a golden lab, Honey.

Like many high school students, Pride and Prejudice was assigned to me in an English literature class. It was not my favourite book, but I read it as I had to. I forgot about the book until in my 30’s when I saw and fell in love with the 1995 Pride and Prejudice version made for TV in England, and purchased a copy of the DVD that is now much played.

The tipping point was the 2005 big screen adaption of P&P. Not long after seeing it I found and read the complete works of Jane Austen on Amazon, starting with Pride and Prejudice. The latter book is by far my favourite. After I read it three of four times over, I wistfully said to myself: ‘it is a great pity that Miss Austen never wrote a sequel to her seminal novel.' One day I was searching Kindle books and for the fun of it I entered “Pride and Prejudice Sequel’ into the search not expecting any results.

The rest is history. I discovered the JAFF community and books. I became a veracious reader of JAFF books and once I had devoured all of the sequels and continuations that I could find, I read my first variation. I had been resisting variations wrongly thinking that I would not enjoy them as much as the sequels. Boy, was I ever wrong! Today I am the proud owner of well over 1,000 JAFF novels that I have purchased on Amazon. 'A Change of Fortunes' is my first book that I wrote. There are a number of others on the way.

I have now read 7 of this author's stories. This is my favorite of the ones I have read. I will say that several times I was brought to tears. Having 697 pages on my Kindle there is no way I can even hint at all this premise includes. The title does inform the reader that the Colonel and his wife are the focus of much of this story.

The author's story description is a good one but misses a lot due mostly to the same fact I stated above - just too much going on. There are many new characters. Mrs. Bennet has died (Lydia was not her favorite.) and Mr. Bennet remarried. Fitzwilliam's parents are alive and monitor his behavior and at one point send him to live in an estate in Scotland during which he is to think about his behavior. Yes, his snobbery is even more exaggerated in this story and many condemn that and scold him.

Among the new characters we have some births: two births consist of twins. One affect Longbourn's entail. Collins is also a vile character in this story and meets a fate not used in any other story I have read. The Colonel's family has a large part to play, including the older brother's courting one of the Bennet sisters. Bingley and Caroline have different paths in their lives than in canon. Plus Wickham becomes the focus of a man hunt and has his comeuppance.

I do like how love is described as being like books. One story can have a lovely path but when it is finished that story is part of the past. The reader/lover may move on to the next story and still treasure the past experience.

The author does inform us that ODC has a HEA but at times I wondered if it would be a completely "in love" one. Elizabeth and the Colonel are forced to marry due to an outside party's behavior which draws the wrong type of attention to an innocent moment. They are friends but not in love but "what are you going to do"

Yes, there is angst in this story. A death has many reeling and in denial. I highly recommend this story.

A.K.A. The Repercussions of Extreme Pride & Prejudice

SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain *** SPOILERS ***

>>Rating: Mature: adult themes discussed: This is not to be ignored, language, violent death described, m/m love mentioned, insanity, murder attempt, violence, military battle described
>>Angst Level: Oh-My-Goodness. The further into the story I went, I knew it was coming and it still hit hard.
>>Tissue Alert: The reader knows what’s coming. Yeah, it was a snot fest. Having been in my own period of mourning, this was tearful. Whew! Have a box handy. Just saying.
>>Source: I borrowed this from KU on 10-15-23 and volunteered to leave a review. The thoughts and opinions expressed are my own work and were not artificially produced. Grief, surely, I can say what I think.
>>Trope: [1] a Bennet dies [2] 2nd Bennet wife [3] Elizabeth marries another [4] several beloved characters die [5] Lady Anne and Mr. Darcy are still alive.

The reader knows what will happen. The book blurb stated it at the beginning. You know it is coming as you read through the story. The tension slowly builds as the story progresses. Darcy and his pride have to be dealt with before Elizabeth will give him the time of day.

Darcy presented his DHP [Disastrous Hunsford Proposal] and was stunned that someone would dare refuse him. He was overcoming all manner of obstacles in order to offer for her. What was her problem? Richard happened upon Elizabeth after she had read Darcy’s letter and was crying. He comforted her and Collins saw them and squealed like a girl. Riders from the nearby Metcalf estate were riding through the lane and heard the commotion. They arrived at the same time Darcy approached the grove. That was it. Compromise. Everything happened after that. It was a good thing Elizabeth and Richard were friends. Actually, they were cousins through marriage. That’s another story within this story.

Marriage to a man who was still in service to 'King and Country' was difficult for Elizabeth. Letters written before he deployed were to be delivered if, and only if, he did not return. I cried my eyes out at times. I have survived my own period of mourning and didn’t realize I was reading the hardest part of the story on what would have been my anniversary. At my own husband’s funeral, an honor guard folded the flag and presented it to me in appreciation of his service to a grateful nation. As I read about Richard’s service, it was very powerful. However, I made it through and can recommend it. Just be sure to have a big box of tissues handy.

Villains: This author loves to write her villains as ‘bad to the bone’ and their comeuppance is well deserved. Help us all. Wickham couldn’t see his end coming. [Pun intended; you’ll get it when you read it]. Caroline lived out her greatest dream. [You’ll get it] Lady Catherine fell on her own petard. [You’ll… you know] That was so cool. She was such a witch. Poor Anne.

Wonderful

As the book summary indicates, Elizabeth marries someone else before ODC find their HEA, and from the book title, you can guess who that someone is. This is another wonderfully satisfying creation of this author, populated with the characters that people most of her stories. Therefore, again, it's almost like reconnecting with old friends when those familiar names arise.

I love the character of Colonel Fitzwilliam, and I was perfectly comfortable with the marriage to Elizabeth because he's such a great guy. I'm glad the author gave them a loving marriage, under the circumstances, as it made for a much more heartwarming story, especially given later events. Of course, these later events were somewhat predictable. However, the story was enriched greatly by the relationship between Elizabeth and Colonel Fitzwilliam.

This is a long book, and I think it could have been shortened considerably with some judicious editing, without sacrificing any of the story's integrity. There were too many insignificant details, such as who rode in which carriage with whom, or all of the polite greetings given whenever people meet. I deducted a star for this, but also for the author's way of narrating a story, rather than using dialogue. Sometimes this is useful, but there are some events that warrant a more personal involvement.

However, this author has become an automatic purchase for me. Her stories always include the most satisfying comeuppances for the villains, and they allow the main characters so much more forthright behavior than the usual JAFF variations. The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly.

long journey of Lizzy and the colonel

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars. Rounded up because there was so much story.

SPOILERS

majority of the story is about Lizzy and the Colonel, Richard. Many changes in the existing characters and many more characters added. Darcy is arrogant but the Bennets are not in a lower circle except in Darcy’s opinion. He is a long time in fixing his attitude and really, he doesn’t really change off of it until way long in the story. So we are faced with an arrogant and proud Darcy for so long it made his change and Lizzy’s change about him seem unlikely.

Lizzy must marry so since it will not be with Darcy it is with Richard. After lots of time Richard dies and Lizzy decides to marry Darcy after reading a final letter from Richard suggesting it. Hmmm 🤔

Many other plot thread for old and new characters. I was glad to have read it but probably won’t reread.

I did not want to not like it but that is how it is. I loved her other stories but this was way to long. The dialogue was too modern and they did not act like they lived in the regency period. I could not finish it.

Well written lengthy story

The second Mrs Bennet is the wealthy daughter of an Earl and possesses numerous titled relatives which bring the 5 Bennet daughters into new circles and new life experiences. There are new characters that interact with these family members and its a much richer story. Lady Catherine is crazy and has been poisoning Anne for years. Anne is the legal owner of Rosings but if she dies everything goes to Richard. Anne's father wanted nothing to be in Catherine's hands. Fortunately the family finds out and saves Anne who has been systematically poisoned for so long that she has organ damage. Mr Collins who doesn't think before he opens his mouth saw an innocent situation between Elizabeth and Richard and screams out loud in front of gossips that its a compromise! Of course, Darcy's devastated.
I'm pleased with this entire story - the evil ones were given their just rewards, the innocent ones saved, and the entire cast of characters have eventful but generally happy lives. We have a temporary HEA but the war with Napoleon destroyed that and then by the conclusion we see the definite HEA!

The story lacked focus. Too many themes (I track tropes and themes for books I read, and this story had twelve different themes/tropes) and too many original characters that serve little to no purpose except to complicate and clutter the plot.

I’m open to stories where Elizabeth is a widow or first paired with someone else, so that did not affect my rating.

In some parts of this story are real tearjerkers. Mr. Collins caused a compromise between Elizabeth and the colonel by screaming, drawing attention of three gossipy women one who was a friend of lady Catherine. The colonel was correct about the gender of the baby Elizabeth carried. It was sad that child was born on the same day the colonel died. Mr. Darcy promised to look after Elizabeth if something happened to him. Mr. Collins had relationship with his curate, that could led to both of them to be hung, instead they were transported to Africa. After the colonel died Mr. Darcy's parents wrote to Elizabeth to pull him out of the despair he was in. Elizabeth was able to knock some sense into him, verbally.

A lovely Intertwined family romp including our favorite characters. Yep the villains make their appearances but receive their dues pretty smoothly. Sort of quick. Effective though. I really enjoyed the relationship between the Fitzwilliam brothers and F Darcy. Some angst but definitely not a blue couch tale. A longer story but worth it. Enjoy 😉

Good story!

I enjoy your stories a lot. Next time you write about officer ranks for Col Fitzwilliam, please check on the British rank structure. I imagine you were told "second lieutant and lieutenant general" by a US citizen. Brigadeer General, or General, was as high as British ranks went according to a Google search I did. No second lieutenant. It would be ensign. I am a US Air Force Captain, retired. Please keep writing such great yarns. I really like them. I do get an extra charge out of incidental names you use. The most entertaining one was a solicitors address of 221 Baker St, Office B!! Loved that one! Thanks for the terrific stories!

An epic

Writing could be a little better but it was not as bad as some I have read. What an epic. So many characters and stories and lives to keep track of. I'm happy for Lizzy and Darcy but I would have been just as happy if she and Richard lived a long and happy marriage and Darcy went his own way, hopefully not as a bitter man, but whatever. I did not need ODC to see fruition in this version. There are an awful lot of titled people in this story. And does all the timing really work out? Still, I found I wanted to keep reading.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to finish this book, as I get very tired of Elizabeth and Darcy having a Happily Ever After while Jane and Bingley do not.

In this variation, Darcy is a bigger fool than in cannon and many other variations. I love the thought of Lizzie and Colonel Fitzwilliam together, so I considered stopping once it was obvious Richard would make his grand exit.

I'm glad I read on. The author did a great job of handling Lizzy's feelings for both men and the relationship with Darcy came about it a sensible way.

Enjoyed it but different

An unusual variation inspired by author Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice by Shana Granderson.
I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but it’s not your usual variation read the author warning. I did like it but there’s a fair bit of angst involved.

The best variation ever written!

No spoilers here! This book is long, so many characters to remember. Each one of them evolved as the story went on. Heart wrenching! I cried my heart out. The transformation of Mr. Darcy is remarkable. But, it's the Colonel that I fell in love with. A most satisfying read. Highly recommend.

Didn’t think I would like the premise of the story. However, the more I kept reading the better it got. Turned out it is now one of my favorites as it is relatable to things that have happened in my life although not a dramatic as in the book.

Too many people and too many relationships. It needed a map

Very interesting story. I’m surprised it’s the first when I read that last one of the heroes first chapter. I really enjoy these Pride and prejudiced sequels. But this one had way too many people to keep straight.

What a slog

Would have been a much better read if we
weren't told about every member of the family, also unbelievable that all those titled people would act like that.

Very lovely, sad and sweet

Enjoyable story where several things deviate from canon and are the basis for an interesting approach that changes things for everyone.
