I adore Matyszak's works for bringing daily life in antiquity to the modern reader. Our perceptions of life in the classical era are influenced so much by contemporary writers that were from and concerned with the 1% plus Hollywood's misappropriation and misrepresentation, that Matyszak's works are a breath of fresh air.
What to Expect
The intertwined stories of eight everyday people - from a runaway slave to a diplomat, from a farmer to an international trader - in the year leading to the 133rd Olympic Games (248 BCE). Almost a century after Alexander the Great's conquest, this is the height of the Hellenistic era. Greek culture and trade range from Mesopotamia through Syria and Anatolia, from the Balkans to Egypt, and even westward to Massilia (Marseille).
While this isn't exactly either fiction or non-fiction, it's a great amalgam that, together with judicious sidebars and end notes, both teaches and entertains. If you'd like to leanr more about how people actually lived during those times, these in an excellent resource.

I love that the focus is shifted away from rulers and battles to the man and woman on the street (or farm track). Combining meticulous research, a basic fictional narrative, and understated humour, Matyszak brings the whole Eastern Mediterranean of the 3rd century BCE to life, in a way that both amuses and educates. With the side-bar and some extra reading, you can quickly learn a lot about life in antiquity.
What to be aware of
Though fiction, don't expect high drama (and on the plus side, you won't be bored by a lecturing, academic tone).

Oduvek sam voleo antički svet i sa zadovoljstvom ga istraživao kroz enciklopedije, dokumentarce igrane filmove i serije, pa u poslednjih par godina i kroz romane. Knjiga Filipa Metizaka me je, okvirno gledano, polovinom sadržaja podsetila na neke informacije koje sam već znao, a polovinom sadržaja sa nekima tek upoznala. Ipak, ono što me je najviše kupilo i učinilo da odmah stavim na listu za čitanje i ostale knjige ovog istoričara jeste što sam imao osećaj kao da sam tamo – u centru meteža u agori dok me trgovci spopadaju nudeći mi robu, među umornim zemljoradnicima koji odmaraju ispod hrasta nakon celodnevne žetve pšenice, na krmi broda dok posmatram veliki svetionik na Farosu približavajući se Aleksandriji, na nekom simpozionu u Atini uživam u muzici sa kitare (ili barbitona) dok gustiram razblaženo vino. Kroz živote i svakodnevnice 6 likova potpuno različitih karaktera, zanimanja, svakodnevnica i društvenih staleža (zemljoradnice udovice, diplomate, Olimpijca kratkoprugaša, odbegle robinje poreklom iz Trakije, putujuće sviračice lire i bogatog trgovca) čiji se životi igrom sudbine i neverovatnih okolnosti međusobno prepliću upoznajemo kako je funkcionisalo i bilo organizovano društvo antičke Grčke, kako su ljudi živeli, kakve su bile njihove svakodnevne brige i obaveze. Uz njih upoznajemo i političku situaciju u svim helenističkim državama i gradovima, kakav je bio odnos Grka i istočnjačkih naroda, Egipćana i Makedonaca, kako su sarađivali i trgovali. Takođe, u kontekstu hronologije događaja, koliki je bio značaj Olimpijskih igara i kako su one uticale na celokupan društveno politički život, posebno u mestu održavanja – gradu Eleji. Knjiga je obogaćena divnim ilustracijama, kao i od fikcije odvojenim tekstovima sa isključivo istorijskim činjenicama koje razjašnjavaju neke nedoumice iz same priče.
Najtoplija preporuka ukoliko volite antičku istoriju i želite da je doživite malo realističnije nego što to pružaju malo suvoparniji istorijski tekstovi.

Chronique complète
Je ne sais pas vous, mais personnellement, j'adore regarder des docufictions. Je trouve que c'est un format à la fois digeste, ludique et hautement pédagogique pour un profane, qui permet de bien appréhender la vie telle que l'on suppose qu'elle était à une certaine période.
En revanche, il s'agissait jusque-là d'un format que je n'avais jamais lu. C'est désormais chose faite avec ce livre de Philip Matyszak, auteur britannique qui s'illustre dans ce genre depuis de nombreuses années. Ici, il nous propose un voyage au sein d'une Grèce Antique alors à un apogée, au IIIᵉ siècle avant notre ère.
Ce qui est malin, c'est qu'il va s'attacher à nous faire découvrir la période via le destin de plusieurs personnages récurrents, tous emblématiques d'un rôle ayant trait à l'époque. Ainsi suivrons-nous entre autres une joueuse de lyre qui se bat en tant que femme pour trouver sa place dans un univers longtemps réservé aux hommes, un athlète qui part en direction des prestigieux Jeux Olympiques, ou encore un constructeur de temple chargé d'édifier un nouveau bâtiment sur un terrain réputé maudit par les Dieux.

Il est vrai que Hallicarnasse n'est plus aussi grandiose qu'autrefois, à l'époque où la reine Artémise était déterminée à faire de sa cité le joyau de l'Anatolie. Halicarnasse ne s'est jamais totalement remise du traitement brutal qu'elle a subi quand Alexandre le Grand a pris la cité aux Perses : lorsqu'il a réalisé que la ville était perdue, le commandant perse en a brûle une bonne partie, de dépit. Et le petit tremblement de terre qui l'a récemment secouée n'a rien arrangé. Le célèbre mausolée érigé un siècle plus tôt montre désormais des traces d'usure, ce qui ne l'empêche pas de rester l'une des merveilles du monde."

Le tout est bien pensé : le balancement entre documentaire et fiction est parfaitement dosé, et on se plaît à suivre le destin de tous ces personnages attachants, se débattant dans un quotidien qui n'est pas toujours évident. L'époque est certes éclairée, mais les superstitions et les inégalités sont omniprésentes : esclavage, persécution des étrangers, des femmes, guerres incessantes, maladies, etc. La vie n'est pas toujours idyllique !
On trouve aussi au gré des pages et des thèmes abordés quelques images qui viennent enrichir le propos, nous immergeant davantage encore dans ce contexte historique absolument fascinant, mais géopolitiquement dense tout de même.
Une année en Grèce antique relève donc son ambition haut-la-main, en parvenant à nous faire vivre quatre saisons auprès de personnages attachants, tout en ne perdant pas de vue son contenu instructif, là où certains documentaires historiques peuvent s'avérer ardu à lire d'un bloc.

Having greatly enjoyed Matyszak's 24 Hours in Ancient Athens for its blend of narrative, historical fact and wry observation, I decided to try another of his books about Ancient Greece. A Year in the Life of Ancient Greece is set a couple of centuries later than 24 Hours, in 248BC, and explores the lives of a small cast of characters: a farmwife, a diplomat, an athlete (it's Olympics year), a female musician, an escaped Thracian slave, a merchant who falls ill in Egypt, a young woman due to be married, and a builder of temples. It opens with a nice little scene outside the Temple of Hera at Elis, with a group of people sheltering from the rain and a temple attendant contemplating who, and what, each of them may be. Over the preceding twelve months (starting from the autumn equinox) we discover their stories and how they're connected.
Lots of information about agriculture, about athletic training, and about medicine and music. I especially liked Kallia, who plays the lyre and has been composing her own work in unconventional modes, or scales: Thratta, the escaped slave who becomes a herbalist, is also a likeable character. I learnt slightly more than I'd expected about the mechanics and geometry of temple construction, and some unsettling facts about the role of women. (For instance, if an Athenian man died without male heirs, his youngest daughter would become an epikleros, having to divorce any husband she might have acquired so that she could marry her father's closest male relative and keep her father's wealth in the family.)
Fascinating, well-referenced, with copious footnotes and explanatory sections. Also a joke about the River Meander.

Lepo je vratiti se u vreme stare Grčke. Metizak je ponovo uspeo da me kupi svojim pripovedanjem. Ima nešto u njegovom pisanju, što mi se veoma dopada. Nešto što njegove knjige izdvaja iz ove edicije. U stanju sam da upijem svaku reč, da zamislim te predele, zamislim ljude i vidim celo jedno društvo. To je neopisiv osećaj koji prija i natera da zavolite pisca i knjigu.
Uspeo je da mi razbije čitalačku blokadu nakon skoro tri meseca. Na tome sam mu veoma zahvalan.
Kao i uvek, Metizak na vrlo zanimljiv način predstavlja društvo stare Grčke. Pratimo živote osam pojedinaca iz različitih društvenih slojeva, kroz godinu dana. Pratimo godinu dana u životu diplomate, atletičara, odbeglog roba, buduće neveste, trgovca, zemljoradnice, graditelja i sviračice na liri. Svaka priča je zanimljiva na svoj način i u svakoj sam uživao podjednako.

Ova knjiga ima sve dodatke koje istorijska knjiga treba da ima. Pozitivno je što nije suvoparno obasipanje podacima. To ume da odbije čitaoce od ovakve literature, ali ovde to nije slučaj. Metizak na vrlo zanimljiv način dočara sve što je zamislio. Retki su oni koji to mogu.
Možda je neko ne smatra "pravom" knjigom iz ovog žanra, ali se meni veoma dopala. Tema je sama po sebi zanimljiva, pa unapred znate da ćete uživati.
Od mene preporuka. Nadam se još nekom novom naslovu u ediciji. Valjda će nas Laguna iznenaditi. 🙂

Rien que dans le prologue, j'ai appris des choses ! Sur la folie des calendriers notamment et le fait qu'une même cité pouvait en compter plusieurs différents. D'ailleurs, parlant du prologue, j'ai aimé cette manière de croiser furtivement chaque personnage avant de les suivre sur une année pour voir comment ils en sont arrivés là. Un prologue que j'ai donc relu à la fin de ma lecture, vraiment très sympa.
Commençons par un détail : cela dépendait des personnages suivis mais certaines considérations était un peu ennuyeuses (tout ce qui touchait au politique). Cela mis à part, prendre huit personnages de différentes origines, différents métiers fut une manière intéressante de toucher à un peu tous les aspects de la vie quotidienne ainsi qu'à d'autres thèmes sur la Grèce antique. Finalement, on a des informations aussi bien sur le soin par les herbes que le travail des champs, l'architecture des temples, les Jeux Olympiques, la ville d'Alexandrie, etc., etc., j'en passe beaucoup. Un procédé finalement assez ingénieux et sympa, même si rien n'est vraiment creusé à fond (on ne peut pas tout avoir et c'est parfaitement compréhensible). Pour terminer, sur la fin, lorsque les pièces du puzzles collent et que l'on voit comment on va arriver à lier les personnages, ce fut encore plus intéressant (niveau narration).
Le seul point négatif que je soulèverais est par rapport au style. Et comme c'est présent tout au long du récit, c'est quand même un assez gros défaut. J'ai été souvent perdue quant aux temps employés. Présent, passé composé, conditionnel, imparfait sur une même page, et cela à plusieurs reprises. Cela donnait un effet assez lourd et perturbant, m'obligeant à relire plusieurs fois certaines phrases.
Hormis cela, lecture intéressante et pas mal foutue !

It was so enjoyable! I devoured the book in a day. I’ve found the characters so enjoyable! When we talk about antic greek history, we talk about the big names. Pericles. Sophocles. Alexander. Heracles. And so on and on. I’ve never actually had a history lesson describing the day to day life of a greek, who doesn’t have to save the world from dangerous prophecies, or fight in great battles- a slave on the escape, a bride, a merchant, a diplomat, an athlete, a musician. Regular people, with their regular problems. The content was a mixture of information I’ve already known, and of such I’ve never heard of before. Which is indeed a satisfying mixture. I did also appreciate stories of these people overlapping at some point.
Even though it was very enjoyable, I’ve found a few perspectives quite boring at times, but maybe that’s just my interests. Also, it didn’t feel like Philip had a signature writing style (which I think is key for every author) and it felt like the way it was written was very factual, very history book like.
Regardless, I think this is a fantastic read for every ancient Greece history lover!
Even though it was very enjoyable, I’ve found a few perspectives quite boring at times, but maybe that’s just my interests. Also, it didn’t feel like Philip had a signature writing style (which I think is key for every author) and it felt like the way it was written was very factual, very history book like.
Regardless, I think this is a fantastic read for every ancient Greece history lover!

Un livre qui se lit légèrement comme une bonne promenade dans le monde de la Grèce antique, un bon hybride entre livre remplis d'informations et descriptive et un roman, le fil conducteur des Olympiades et bien mener, mais ces mêmes Olympiades invalident un peu le sous-titre du livre qui décrit plus l'événementiels dans le monde grec plutôt que le quotidien. Les personnages bien que fictives sont bien choisis et narré un véritable roman serait agréable à lire, par moment l'auteur est un peu lassant dans son style, bien que peut-être cela soit dû à la traduction, car par moment la traduction trop libre et anachronique sort de l'atmosphère de la Grèce antique.

An interesting way of finding out what life was like for the ‘real’ people of Greece (not kings and rulers) - by following some over the course of a year. An excellent read, split into short sections, so it’s easy to read during mealtimes or bus journeys for example, or just when you’re not feeling up to long chapters of other books. Definitely recommended for Ancient Greece enthusiasts.

Another of the 4 books written in English at the Spanish Museum of History. Another good read. Another one on Ancient Greece, obviously the same theme and reasoning why. This one, however, is fictional tied to historical information. This one was just as enjoyable, although a little longer, a little more detailed on specific people's lives and less on generics, and more story-like than just fact- giving.

Me ha gustado muchísimo. Va narrando la historia de 8 personajes de la antigua grecia de una forma muy entretenida y formativa. Es muy fácil de leer y tiene muchos datos interesantes y todas las historias cotidianas te transportan a esa época
No son grandes historias, son historias sencillas que te enseñan cómo funciona el día a día de estos tipos de personajes no ficticios ni reales.
Es la primera obra histórica de divulgación que leo y estoy muy contenta con ella

If you want to learn about daily lives in Ancient Greece, this is the book to read! While it has lots of archeological and historical sources to back it up, the main joy in reading this is the characters (all fictional) you get invested to throughout. With a wide variety of characters, there is something for everyone, and it all ties together very well.

This was a really fun and educational read, and it did a good job of weaving together the actual history and the fictional narratives into something light and rich and thoroughly entertaining. Highly recommended!

I love these books! I particularly loved this one because you’re able to follow the individuals lives from the start to the finish of the book rather than getting 24 small glimpses, and it ending up being really moving! Would recommend to everyone!!

Pendant un an, on suit la trace d'une agricultrice, d'un marchand, d'une joueuse de lyre, d'un diplomate, d'une jeune femme se préparant au mariage, d'un contremaitre, d'une esclave en fuite devenue herboriste et d'un sprinteur d'élite. Au terme de cette année, leurs trajectoires distinctes convergeront vers la ville d'Élis, alors qu'auront lieu les jeux olympiques. Si nos huit compagnons sont issus de l'imagination de l'auteur, ils auraient tous bien pu exister. Ce n'es pas une synthèse d'histoire, mais plutôt un exercice fort divertissant de vulgarisation historique. On se passionne pour le destin des 8 protagonistes, on sourit en lisant ce texte ponctué d'humour et de traits d'esprits. On s'imprègne surtout de l'atmosphère de la société grecque, sa diversité, les tensions qui y règnent. Au passage, on apprend des éléments d'histoire de l'art, d'architecture, de musicologie et d'histoire politique. Un ouvrage qui ne s'adresse absolument pas à des érudits, mais que l'historienne peu familière avec l'antiquité aura tout de même apprécié en buvant son café le matin!
