Not as perfect as 1 & 2, but still pretty awesome~

This one was much shorter than the previous ones and that was such a shame because

After an eight year absence, Marsha Canham makes a triumphant return. "The Following Sea" is a swashbuckling, lusty romance that keeps you turning pages with all the clever twists and turns that Ms. Canham is known for. Lost treasure, a feisty heroine in distress, a handsome, notorious pirate - what could be better?

Ms. Canham's words come alive as you can almost smell the ocean and easily envision the majestic ships as they blast each other in their dangerous dance in battle. Just when you are wondering how Gabriel Dante (one of the infamous Hell Twins and son of Simon Dante, the Pirate Wolf) is going to survive his latest predicament, Ms. Canham, oh so cleverly and with such panache, works her magic and Gabriel survives to fight another day. Our heroine, gently bred Evangeline Chandler, proves to be tenacious in her quest to locate her lost father, while still maintaining her sweetness despite the many betrayals and trials she faces.

It has been wonderful re-acquainting myself with Ms. Canham's books now that she has gotten her rights back and has published them in e-book form. I'm ecstatic that she is writing again, as I'm sure thousands of her die-hard fans are. And, I'm thrilled to find that her voice, which has been missed these last eight years, still sings strong. That voice and gift has been missed, but never forgotten. Thank goodness Marsha Canham is writing again and we can benefit from her wit, her amazing story telling and her fabulous talent!

Avast ye mateys! This was a bloody good book! :)

Again, Marsha Canham can write a damn ending to make you sigh 🥲

The Kindle cover shows a black-haired heroine but she is actually the complete opposite- silver blonde hair. Come on!

With his Valour at the bottom of the ocean, Gabriel Dante sails the former Spanish galleon, now renamed Endurance back home to Pigeon Cay as they come across a ship sailing in a fixed circle and flaying the yellow flag announcing it's a plague ship and others should steer clear. Doing his seafaring duty, Dante orders his men to sink it, but after the first broadside, he notices a lone survivor...A slender, pale, yellow-haired waif standing on deck.

Despite his survival instinct, Gabriel decides to save her, towing her behind his ship in a boat in order to prevent possible contagion, but a storm changes his plans once more when he's forced to save the girl from drowning.

Despite the crew's superstitions and fears, Evangeline "Eva" Chandler isn't contagious or a witch, but merely searching for her missing father, and Gabriel, despite his better intentions, decides to help her...And soon they're embroiled in decades long intrigue involving a ghost ship disappeared during a hurricane carrying a treasure many would kill to possess.

This was yet another wonderful addition to the Dante saga. It had a much more dramatic story arc than the previous two novels, and the romance seemed a bit of an afterthought, but the ending slayed it with the culmination of the suspense/mystery sub-plot and that final action-y confrontation.

The prologue was reminiscent of Through a Dark Mist as the reader is thrust in the middle of the action, while travelling back in time to establish the story and characters with the first chapter.

As I said, the plot had a pretty dramatic flare with a displaced girl searching for her father, surviving the plague on board a ship and almost blown to smithereens, only to be rescued (twice) by a rather snarly, bruised pirate, but thanks to the characters (both main and secondary) and their interactions, the story worked very well.
The plot unfurled slowly and leisurely, yet the pacing never suffered, flowing easily, picking up the pace or slowing down when needed.

I liked the two leads, especially the heroine who was no wilting violet no matter what happened to her (holding strong even under duress), while the hero remained a slight enigma throughout the story. Even that worked in the book's favor, maintaining the sprinkle of mystique and intrigue no matter what.
The romance (mostly the quick resolution toward the end) might've seemed added as an afterthought with all the other things going on, but it also strangely worked well into the canvass of the plot. I liked the fact the hero and heroine were rather evenly matched, maintaining a nice balance of power without Eva appearing much weaker (unless physically, of course) than Gabriel.

What I liked most was the ghost treasure ship part of the story. It could've been done as a treasure hunt, instead of the way it was presented, but it offered enough mystery and intrigue to keep things lively, and provided that added incentive for the suspense to unfold and the action to kick in.

This was a wonderful mix of well-developed characters, mystery, suspense, and action with that added sprinkle of romance to tie it up nicely.

P.S. And there's another discrepancy in the time continuum of this series. It's set directly after the end of the final battle in The Iron Rose. But The Iron Rose is set in 1614 (it says so in the book) and this one (it's in the first sentence of the prologue!) in 1623. Something doesn't add up.

Despite the constraints of the trope, this was a clever and sexy story. It's a fun series.

4 Stars for writing style alone. MC can truly write wonderful adventures and have the reader see every detail in their minds as if they were physically standing there. I hope she never puts her pen down again. This story is the continuation of the Dante series and yes it's about Pirates. I know, I rolled my eyes the first time I considered a pirate themed book too. But this is Marsha Canham, and she brings her stories to life with all the adventure, strong characters, and non-stop action of an era long gone where stories were larger than life and romance was not just about the sex, it encompassed the entire tale.(Can you tell I am a huge fan?) Gabriel's story has many of these elements and the story is wonderfully told. The detail, as always, brings to light really great historical tidbits had me pausing several times. The actual romance between the two main characters wasn't as strong as I would have liked, but the characters themselves were wonderfully constructed. The villeins weren't up to the standard I have experienced with other books by MC, but they were distasteful enough. The story was very good, but it didn't have the impact I have experience in her other books. Of all Marsha's works, the Sea Wolf Series was not my favorite, and waiting so long for another book from her had my expectations quite high, so I am not sure if I am judging this fairly. It was very good, make no mistake, but not as epic as some of her other books. Still, no one can equal her writing in swashbuckling, fun and adventure with to die for Heros and always strong heroines. Very good read, and could go as a stand alone, but you absolutely have to read them in order if you want to enjoy this story to the fullest. The story of the Sea Wolf and the Black Swan should not be missed anyway. Nor should The Wind and the Sea, my all time favorite book of her pirate collections.

A wounded Gabriel Dante is separated from the rest of the fleet. His ship encounters another vessel flying plague colors, and assumes it will be deserted, but instead finds a woman tied to the mast as the sole survivor. Despite his better judgement, he agrees to bring her aboard and quarantines her to his own cabin. Evangeline Chandler may be a stroke of bad luck, or may be the best thing that could happen to Gabriel and his crew.

Book three starts with daring rescue and turns into a search for a Spanish treasure Galleon. As usual, it features swashbuckling and adventure, battles on ships, and maritime history. It's certainly a romance, but it's an old school style sweeping adventure as well, with a large focus on plot alongside romance and character development. Even if it isn't my favorite of the romances of the series, I love that Eva is a character who learns to rely on her own fortitude to see herself from the ballrooms of London to the open seas of the Carribean.

What happened? This book isn't as good as the previous two, in my opinion. Something was missing or a bunch of somethings. It still had some action, but less than the previous two and if I remember correctly, only one sword-fight (darn it). I missed the verbal sparring that was what I loved most in the other books in this trilogy. There were some great scenes though and it kept me interested and reading.

Like the first two, it's formulaic, but full of action and adventure. None of the characters are overtly stupid, which is refreshing, and the romance is pretty hot. Not a bad way to pass the time.

I love Marsha Canham’s high seas, swashbuckling romances and have rated them all 5 stars. This one is no exception. It’s the third in her Pirate Wolf trilogy, set in 1623 in the tropical waters of the Spanish Main (think the Caribbean), at a time when pirates and privateers went after the enormous wealth being shipped back to Spain in the form of gold, silver, gems and spices via the Spanish treasure fleets. This is the story of Gabriel Dante, Simon and Isabeau Dante’s youngest son, a handsome sea captain who has just captured a Spanish galleon.

On his way back to the Dante family headquarters in Pigeon Cay, Gabriel rescues beautiful young Eva Chandler from a ship of death. Gabriel’s interest is roused by the English beauty, both her body and the silver coin she carries in a locket, a Spanish coin her father sent her that may have come from a famous treasure ship lost on the Spanish Main. Eva’s father, William Chandler, a shipping magnate, sailed to the Caribbean 4 years ago and Eva hasn’t seen him since. Desperate to know if he lives, Eva has come looking for him and wants Gabriel’s help.

Gabriel is a handsome rogue like his father, the famous Pirate Wolf; and Eva is her own woman, just like Gabriel’s mother. So much so, Eva even taunts Gabriel like Isabeau taunts Simon. In other words, Gabriel and Eva are a well-matched pair! Their adventures will have your head spinning. It’s like taking a wild ride without leaving home: pirates, sunken treasure, battle on land, storms at sea, sword fights and shipboard love, oh yes! Who needs a vacation?…Just read this!

THE IRON ROSE (Juliet and Varian)

Total: 8/10

Plot/world: 8/10
Writing: 9.5/10
Characters: 8/10
Entertaining: 7/10
Steaminess: 7/10

The Following Sea is exactly what you can expect if you've read other books in this series. Marsha Canham is an amazingly elegant writer who can write about this era like no one else.

I think I liked the romance a little bit more in the first book in this series (it was steamier). This one had more gentlemanliness, something about it felt younger, purer, and sweeter. I loved Evangeline as the heroine of the story. She was a pretty young girl next to Gabriel but had a spine of steel. The whole setting of these two beautiful people meeting in a very unflattering state made the story way more entertaining.

In the end, nothing much to say except that I picked this book wanting a well-written steamy love story with some pirate adventure and got exactly that!

THIS STARTED OUT SLOW, THOUGH THERE WAS A SPARK OF INTRIGUE THAT KEPT ME GOING UNTIL THE STORY BLOSSOMED OUT. THE STORY CONTINUES WITH THE DANTE LEGACY.

HERO is Captain Gabriel Dante and he and his crew comes across a ghost ship whose passengers were all wiped out by a flu or plague. What he finds is a lone survivor, a woman close to being an apparition and superstitious lot that these pirates were, contemplated on giving her a mercy killing or saving her life. They chose the latter, except she's going to be towed behind the ship in a raft. When a storm blows, Gabriel reacts with instinct and saves her life bringing her aboard and shuts them within his cabin until the coast of him not succumbing to the plague was clear. From there on, their courtship began first with uncertainties, mistrust and then passion. I do enjoy how he was with her, and there was never a dull moment. Initially he didn't believe her cock and bull story about her father, a murdering fiance and something about treasure until the truth comes to light for itself.

HEROINE is a beautiful young woman desperate to find her missing father, especially after being betrayed by her fiance and almost being killed. Twice is bad luck when narrowly escaping death, she plunges into another form of calamity when the crew of the ship she boarded was wiped out by a mysterious plague. God has not forsaken her when Gabriel saves her life and she hopes to enlist his help to save her father.

OVERALL it had its own form of swashbuckling adventure , definitely perils were present at every corner and the passion was slowly building from the beginning. I liked that the heroine wasn't some shy miss, not when she embraced her love with the Captain and there are moments where they were just so sweet and passionate.

The prologue opens with SA against a woman held captive on a pirate ship, and it feels true to Marsha Canham's pull-no-punches approach, even though this book was written a full nine years after the second book in this series, The Iron Rose, and 16 years after the opener, the perfect Across a Moonlit Sea.

Our hero this time is Gabriel Dante, the son of the original couple, and our heroine is Eva, a woman who's traveled to the Caribbean in search of her father. She is less in-your-face ballsy that the heroines of the first two books, but don't make the mistake of thinking she's lacking in mettle.

In true Canham style, there are spectacular battles, intricate period detail and history, and blazing hot sex scenes (after the first, rather lackluster one). I also love her character work; in particular, Gabriel is drawn so well. He's a fierce leader, lusty and not hesitant to be violent, but he's also a total gent. The two sides fit together perfectly to make one of my favorite histrom heroes in some time.

This book is quieter than the other two, somehow, but there's plenty of action. Importantly, I can 100% see an HEA for these two.

Two very big nits to pick!

#1-This book begins in 1623. No problem, except it picks up RIGHT where the last one ended. The year then was 1614. This stuck in my head for the entire read. Not off to a good start, but really, it started with a bigger issue-

#2-the girl on the cover looks NOTHING like our heroine, Eva who has VERY BLONDE hair. It just feels like someone was told to pick a cover for a lusty pirate book without knowing anything else about it, and this is what got slapped on it. Smh.

Other than that, I enjoyed it. I liked Gabriel. I liked Eva. I liked the story. And I'll probably read Jonas' story to finish the series out. I just couldn't get passed the cover thing and the 9 year discrepancy. Maybe if I hadn't read them back to back, I wouldn't have noticed the date. Hard not to notice the lady on the cover is not our heroine though. Still an enjoyable read.

Third in the Pirate Wolf series and I have to say, it wasn't perhaps as gripping as the first two which is way I've rated it 4 stars. But it is entirely unique in plot and still great entertainment with plenty of action, fights and of course romance all entwined with historical information. All the family characters are quite endearing and details equally vivid.

Another well written book by Marsha Canham. Only she can inspire me to read a pirate themed story. The story is well crafted, the characters three dimensional but a star was lost because the love story was a bit of an after thought. Would have been nice to see them acknowledging their affection somewhere before pronouncing their love in the last chapter!

I loved the beginning. Such an uniqe premise. This book was more plot heavy than Iron Rose. There seemed to be less focus on the Romance than the adventure. I didn't get the build in the relationship I like to see. Still well written, and I do recc as long as you are prepared/prefer more open sea plot with a touch of romance.

Can't quite put my finger on what was missing in this one, as Gabriel and Eva are a lovely pair and the plot of this is refreshingly new for the series. Maybe it's the lack of realistic emotional responses to the various traumatic events Eva faces?

Another solid pirate story from this author. The romance was secondary to the adventure. I enjoyed learning about all kinds of things like plague ships, the Tongue of the Ocean, bioluminescent plankton in addition to the Imperial Spanish shipwrecks.
