“Come close, my sweet child, let’s hug really tight.
Look up at the stars that sparkle, so bright.”

This is an attractively illustrated children’s book about a mother bear and a little bear. They stand at the window and look at the twinkling stars.

I love the illustrations and the little touches that aren’t mentioned in the text. For example, below is the image of them at the window, and hanging on the wall are not only pictures and drawings, but a yellow raincoat and a pair of binoculars. This is a family that gets out into the world around them!

“Mom, look at the stars that shine above me.
If I could hold one how happy I’d be!”

Mom decides to do it – climb to a high spot and catch a star. But first, they must go through the woods.

“We’ll go through the woods as night ends the day.
Through hallways of trees we’ll keep on our way.”

They begin walking hand in hand, and you can see the yellow raincoat and binoculars, ready for action. But as it gets scarier, you’ll notice the little one is high up on Mom’s back! (Have a look at the pythons and all of those eyes.)

“While shadows and rustles might give us a fright,
and roots make us stumble, the stars give us light.”

On they go, braving the ocean -

Then they trek through the more woods in the snow and climb to the top of Mount Digger-Doo, where Mom leaps about, trying to catch a star. No luck.

“I’m sorry, my love. I can’t catch a star.
The sky is too high, I can’t reach that far.
So now let’s go home. It’s dark and it’s late.
Don’t leave just yet, Mom. I see something … wait!”

Shooting stars! Across the water, across the skies and across the town, right down to their little lane.

“Yes, there in our house a light softly gleams.
It takes away fear and it brightens our dreams.
We have our own star and it’s waiting below.
It’s shining so strongly, we just didn’t know.”

This is a lovely book to browse through. The illustrations outshine the poetry, but the message is clear. Of course we’re not going to go out into the night to brave the forests and roaring seas and wintry mountains to try to give our children everything they want, but they will enjoy seeing this pair make the attempt.

Meanwhile, appreciate what you have and don’t worry about greener grass or stars that you can’t actually catch. As the title says Look Up at the Stars! From down here, the night sky is glorious!

Thanks to NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for the preview copy from which I’ve share illustrations and text.

4.3 Stars

Little baby bear looks up at the sky from his room and asks his mama bear for a star. She promises to catch him one, and they travel across the forest, sail through the waters, trudge in the snow, and finally climb Mount Digger-Do.

Mama bear cannot reach the stars, and the little one realizes something important. They see the light in their home and get back to it. After all, home is a safe haven and has everything we need.
The theme isn’t new, but the story is. It comes in easy verses with a recurring stanza by the kiddo bear. But that’s not what I love about the book. So guess what?

Yes! It’s the illustrations. The bears are cute enough, but the landscape is wow. Some pages are double-spread (I think that’s what it’s called), with the illustrations covering both sides of the book. The colors are dark greens, dark blues, and browns with detailing in creams and whites. The forest shrubs have eyes staring at the reader. ;)

The page with the sea is my favorite. The waves are majestic, sweeping the expanse of the book from one end to another. The pages with snow have a Christmasy feel, and the one with the mount and the emerald sky is dramatic. (you get the drift).

To summarize, Look Up at the Stars is a sweet book with a heartwarming theme. But pick it up for the illustrations.

A young bear wants a star and a mother bear promises she will get one for her child. They go on a mission to catch a star for the young bear to keep. From the top of a hill where they tried to catch a star they see their home and they both find that the thing that they want and was searching for was always there at home.

Nice enough illustrations but a bit of an obvious storyline.

What a gorgeous book!!

A story [in gentle rhyme] about a mothers deep and abiding love for her child and all she'd do to get the star from the sky that they have wished for, only to be taught a lovely [and relatable] lesson from her child!

This book evoked deep emotions in me; I am not a mother, but some of the best people I know are [my own beloved mother being one of them] and this reminded me of all they would do for their child [and all mine has done and continues to do for me] in the name of love. thinking of these stories made me rather weepy and I think I will be revisiting this gorgeously illustrated book when I need a reminder of just how powerful love, especially from a mom, can be.

Look Up At The Stars is a lyrical picture book meant for young readers - following a mother bear and a little bear. I loved the amount of detail with the illustrations, you can definitely tell there’s more to this than just a picture book.

I loved the adventure these bears take when the little bears wants to hold a star. The illustrations were stunning with the nature elements. I also loved the overall meaning behind this book - sometimes what you are looking for is right under your nose.

Thank you to Net Galley for this ARC.

Firstly i wish to say, the illustrations within this book are beautiful.

The story depicts a mother love for her child, where they go in search of a star to make the young bear happy. However the bear realises that he doesn't need to go an adventure to be happy as he has all the light he needs right at home.

My six year old boy loved this book and rated it 5/5. He found it very easy to read and recognised the rhyming language used. He said he loved the stars and mummy and baby bear.

The cover and illustrations are what drew me to this book. They are, in a word, magical.

Thankfully so is the story. It's a magical adventure of a momma bear and her young one, traveling far and wide to catch a star's light, only to realize when looking back, that their very own house gives the very same glow.

Who doesn't love this kind of story, where a parent and a child can go on a journey together in search of the impossible made possible?

"Look up at the stars, so high above me.
If I could just hold one, how happy I’d be!"

One night before bedtime an adorable little bear cub and his mommy look through his bedroom window and gaze upon the sky which is magically lit up with thousands of bright twinkling stars. The little one expresses he'd love to catch a star and hold it in his hand. Not to disappoint, his adoring mommy suggests that they go on a journey and catch one just for him.

They begin a difficult journey on a chilly night. The two cross through the woods, sail though turbulent waters, tramp through icy cold snow, and finally climb to the top of Mount Digger-Do. The stars are abundant and ripe for the picking. But will Mommy be able to catch one for her adorable cub?

Mommy Bear discovers she is unable to reach high enough to secure and gift her little one with his heart's desire. Disappointed she tells him they must go home now as it's dark and late.

Little cub tells her not to leave yet because he has made an exciting discovery. It is one that makes both of them very happy and satisfied. Can you guess what that possibly could be?

What a heartwarming rhyming book! It's full of love, imagination and wonderment! The illustrations are soft, gentle and could very well stand on their own... beautifully done! It celebrates the message that home is where the heart is. The book is a perfect bedtime story shared with cozy hugs and snuggles. I highly recommend this book.

Poems are such a gentle way of weaving stories; I appreciate them fondly when I find them in books for children. Within this picture book a mother bear promises to catch a star from the night sky & gift it to her child who believes that after catching a star, they will be the happiest they could ever be. Real life is seldom as we hope & the mother bear is unable to fulfill her promise—the sky is simply too high to reach.

Regardless of the disappointment at their realization, they come to the conclusion that the stars shine & guide the night in better ways than they might should they be helped in their own grasp. I cannot say if there is a particular moral to this story other than, perhaps, understanding that love & appreciation is a sentiment that resides in the heart & not the hand. The stars cannot be held back, nor can anyone we love so we must send them love through the mind & outward, just as the stars up above.

This is a lovely book whose illustrations, produced by Miren Asiain Lora, render it a perfect world to step into before bed. This is the style of story that would succeed well in a bedtime routine. The prose is gentle & soft; the imagery welcoming & warm. The world of the story resembles ours in a way as to leave the reader with tender recollections as they drift off to sleep.

Heartfelt, touching and a beautiful celebration of home. This book may be set in a land covered in ice and snow but the story will melt your heart and leave it feeling full and warm. Gorgeous illustrations accompany simple rhyming text as Cotton weaves the tale of a mother bear and her child. The leave their home to search for a star. With a aching longing conveyed for wanting to hold a star there is a sense of exploration and desire for adventure, but in the end they realize love, family and home are the greatest things in life to hold onto. They travel across oceans, through woods, where they face rough waters and darkness. They climb to the top of a mountain to reach the stars. A perfect bedtime story for parents to read to their children to share in the joys of being home with the ones you love and that sometimes all the things we are searching for can be found at home.

~~A story filled with LOVE <3 & breathtaking art~~

A story, written from the heart, about the importance of the journey and memories we make along the way. The importance of connecting with our loved ones and treasuring the time together. As parents we are quick to run out to get that special toy, or game of year and this story gently reminds us that the most valuable gift that we can give our children is our time and attention.

What a remarkable story and a great way to tell our young readers just how much we care. The artwork is outstanding, with details that you can delight in most of the night.

This would make a wonderful gift for all parents -as a reminder of how wonderful THEIR little star is!!

This is the perfect bedtime story for little ones!! The writing is beautiful and lyrical. It just flows off the togue so well. It's a lovely story about a child that wants a star to feel safe and happy and the mom that goes on an adventure to do that! The mama bear's love is almost tangible and as a parent you can certainly empathize and connect with her. What parent doesn't want to give their child the world? It's so touching to read! I love the ending - it wasn't what I excepted but I loved it all the more!

The illustrations are breathtaking! It's just the right amount of color and definition to draw you in but sparse enough that it doesn't overwhelm the sweet story! Buy it for the pictures alone because they're absolutely stunning!!! A beautiful book to share with a new mom or dad or with your own kids big and small!!

A big thank-you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for giving me a copy of this book for an unbiased review.

5/5 - Loved it!

This is such a sweet and beautifully illustrated story. Though aimed at young readers, the rhymes flow beautifully and the cadence is soothing. The narrative also presents a challenge that young readers and their parents might share - that of wanting to achieve something impossible, only to recognize that what truly matters is already within their grasp. It's an important lesson both for children and for their caretakers. The illustrations that accompany the story are comforting but also very visually appealing - I enjoyed looking at them and they gave me a sense of peace and comfort.

I think this is a perfect bedtime story book and even as an adult, I enjoyed reading it very much.

Cute picture book about an anthropomorphic mother bear and her cub, as they go in search of stars.

The mother keeps talking about how bright they are, and how she will catch one for her cub. But when they climb to the highest they can, they find they can't.

However, when they get there, they find the stars too high.

But the child says the light from their house, so far away, is like a star, and will do just fine.

So, the story is that home is where the love is? No need to go look for the stars? It is a lovely, illustrated book, and seems to say that you can find what you want at home, and I suppose that is the whole point.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

Such a wonderfully illustrated and rhythmically worried book.

When a mother bear and her child look into the night sky, the young bear exclaims how lovely they are, and how happy he’d be to hold one in his hands. So, much like many parents, the mother bear begins a long trek to bring the stars down to make her child happy. Through beautiful forests, and wondrous mountainsides, the pair keep looking for a way to reach the stars, In the end though, the young bear and their mother realize that the stars are not the only thing that brings light into their lives.

I am always a fan of stories that are fun to read out loud, and this one is definitely up there for me, I really loved the repeating verses throughout, and found the overall story to be quite lovely.

With bears as the main characters in this charming children’s book, it offers the story of sometimes when you are searching for something, it is much closer than one thinks.
The mother and baby bear head out because the baby wants his mother to catch him a star. They walk though woods and go across waters, but the star is elusive. But the star is something else, a powerful source of light that often adds comfort in the night.
The small bear realizes that the light from the stars can do so many things, to light the way and takes away fear by brightening dreams. He is happy that the light they really need, and the stars that shine brightly are in their own home and world. This is truly an illuminating and refreshing story.

Love filled book that shows how powerful a mother's love can be. This mom takes her child on an adventure to reach a star to conquer fear and feel surrounded by wonder. They journey together but mom cannot reach the stars. It is then that the story tilts and the child shows their mother where the light shines so brightly. Their home is a haven from fear and full of wonder.
The illustrations are lovely and bring the reader in to be part of this journey. A wonderful read for families with young children. Heart warming gift for new families.

Some things I loved about this book:
*the art. The pictures are engaging and quite lovely while contributing to the story. The pictures of the night sky/night village are beautiful and calming with flecks of metallic paint adding a flair and a richness.
*the back and forth between the parent/child being in different levels of bolded font making it easy to know who is saying what (as you go, you notice the child has a much simpler, repeated refrain) but at a glance, how helpful that is in reading it out loud.
*the message--that we can go exploring but our homes are great places as well.
*the chance for parent/child to go on an adventure together.

Look up at the Stars is a sweet story of a little bear who sets out on a journey with his mother to hold a star.

Writing in rhyming verse, the rhythm of the story is relaxing and would make a great bedtime read. The illustrations are rich and stunning, and transport the reader along with the determined mother and baby.

The overall message of the book, about gaining perspective and discovering what you had all along may be too subtle for some younger readers, but would make a great conversation starter, and point of discovery for them to share with their grownups.

Thank you Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley for a copy of this book. Opinions expressed are my own.

A strong evocation of love and the power of a nice, safe home. Baby bear wants to have a star from the heavens in its hand, and parent bear promises to fetch one – it will be a long and arduous journey, perhaps, but it will be done and it will be done safely. But will it? Simple verse gets the story across perfectly well, and it's all wrapped up with a cosy, night-light glow, and a lullaby quality that is most appealing. A strong four stars.

Reviewed to coincide with a brand-new paperback reprint.

Books like these are reminders of why I like Childrens' Picture Books.

The fabulous artwork on the cover caught first caught my eye, followed by the catchy title.

I'm a sucker for anything star and this book didn't let me down.

It's about a Mother Bear and her cub going on an adventure in search of a star. Very lyrical and soothing, the book takes us along the lake, to the Mount Digger-Doo. There is an undertone oh how we go looking for things that are far away when things that are just as bright and sparkling are with us.

A beautiful read. Amazing artwork.

A gorgeous story where a child wishes for a star and the parent promises they will get one. Together they journey as high as they can, through the city, forests and up the mountains but sadly find the stars out of reach. A wonderful ending when they realise that what they have at home is speical to them and they dont need a star to be happy. Home is all you need. Told in rhyme I can see this being loved by all ages. The illustrations are stunning too, capturing the journey through the different areas and the beauty of the night sky.

A sweet, beautifully illustrated book

Love the illustrations and the sentiment of this book, with the light of home being the star the bears needed, but I think for such a young audience, that main message was implied, or not spelled out quite as much, and I think I'd need to explain it if I was reading it to a small child. It's not super obvious that the little bear sees the lights of the town as stars, and that the light of their home is what they wanted after all. I'm also not sure that the repeated phrase is the key one: maybe it would have been nicer to have the repeated phrase tie in to the message a bit more.

Despite that, I think the book is lovely, and that young children will like the very nicely written rhymes and repetitive nature of the book, (I still remember Dance Away by George Shannon for the same reason). My rating is purely based on whether I'd buy it myself or recommend it to others.

I've heard of someone being promised the moon before, but never a star . . .

When Mama Bear's cub wants to hold a star, mom sets out to deliver on that wish. This book delivers on that beautiful sentiment, accompanied by lovely illustrations.
