OUR STORY
A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.

Over the course of a year, the authors offer 300 destinations, with suggestions on when to visit and why it’s such a choice option, from cooler weather to fewer crowds to animal migrations. This is a book for travellers and those who just want to know more about the world, even if we don’t get on planes so often any more. Each entry includes icons to alert you to the type of trip, a “why now” explanation including itinerary suggestions, planning information, and other months to consider for that destination. I like that they suggest low-carbon travel options when appropriate, such as touring Canada via train. The endmatter includes an adequate index and a list of photo credits. My thanks to the Grand Forks (B.C.) and District Public Library for including this book in its adult nonfiction collection.

Great for trip planning and for armchair travelers. Beautiful photography. This is a gorgeous coffee table book. Would make a great gift. I'm going to have to get this for my own bookshelf (instead of getting it from the library), it's just that helpful.

less repetitive than the European version (slightly more options than just the classic Beach, Skiing, Wine, Castle, Beer, and Sauna), but still shockingly repetitive. take a drink every time an eastern European location is described as "fairytale"
