Rate this book
Keith has died twelve times.

After making a deal with a mysterious immortal, he was sent to a new world in hopes of gaining the offered reward - a chance at a better life with his family. However, Keith failed to realize that this deal did not come with an expiration date, no matter how many times he died.

After dying for the dozenth time, Keith renegotiates with the immortal. This new deal will see him sent to the world of Raiah - a world filled with monsters, cowardly monkeys, and a system of magic very similar to the fantasy roleplaying games his brother used to enjoy.

Completing a quest to hunt the most dangerous monsters on the planet, is the price Keith will need to pay to regain his old life. It’s a good thing that all of his experiences in his previous lives translate to Skills in this new one because if Keith fails this time, the price he will need to pay will be far steeper.

We Hunt Monsters is a crunchy LitRPG in an epic fantasy setting. Fans of Dakota Krout, Will Wight, and the Monster Hunter games will enjoy this new series by the bestselling author of the Rise to Omniscience and Buryoku series.

Fast-paced litRPG that suffers from ineffective plotting

The book started well, standard litRPG setting with proper level-ups and somewhat (mildly) interesting MC but it felt like it was rushed on more than a dozen occasions.

I was initially gonna rate it 4 stars but the "poop" jokes... Ugh... It did NOT land at all for all the 20 or so times.

The MC is suppose to have lived a dozen lifetimes - the shortest at 8 years or so, the longest being several decades. This should have amassed a lot of wisdom and patience.

But he still comes off like a whiny, overly emotional thirty year old.

I suppose writing wise characters is a challenge.

Also, some fairly obvious interesting avenues for character development seemed to have been missed, leaving the MC about as interesting as the MC from the "Twilight" series.

Example: MC is suppose to have learned several languages. It might be interesting if now and then he let slip some oath or word of astonishment in a different language. People who know several different languages sometimes do this (see "Code switching" on wiki if you want to know more on this), even if (like myself) they are not completely fluent in the various other languages. That would have a) made the character somewhat more colorful and interesting and b) reminded us that this dude lived several lifetimes.

Also, the quests and such given in the book seem to be about as interesting as quests given in WOW ("World of Warcraft").

I was a little disappointed. This had one of the best setups I have read in awhile. It could have been so good. Instead it just ended up Meh. Keith has been fighting for a long time. He made a deal with a being to save his family. Little did he know what it entailed. So far he has died 12 times. The last time he almost won but died right when he would have won his freedom. He renegotiates his deal. This is the last time no matter what. The being accepts the deal but makes it so it will be much tougher. He gets send to another world for the 13 and final time. All he has to do is kill all the world monsters. This is a game world. He has stats and levels, etc. He has been in this type of world before. The good news is that he keeps his skills from his previous life. Since he has lived 12 times for a couple of hundred years, he has some impressive skills. This could have been so good. He is not OP but he severely overskilled. I was waiting for the "holy shit" moments where he does something impossible and people stand around and say that phrase. Instead he has to hide his skills because it would be unusual. The magic system, the world building, and the characters were all just average. The only character I liked was the MC. The interactions were not that interesting. There was nothing that really stands out to make me come back to the series. There were a few things I didn't like either. Overall I would not be opposed to reading more of the series but there are so many better books out there. Never know though, I could give it a chance in the future.

i didn’t like the fact the mc was stupid. First why choose hammers? there is such things as fist weapon, cool you don’t want bladed weapon, there are gauntlets with studs on them boom martial art gots your back. two dude legit had an epic rank scroll he could’ve used but dumb ass chick rushes out. I’ve noticed that is a reoccurring theme with his books. his mc is supposed to be smart but isn’t and the chick is always annoying and ruins any possibility of a Smart plan to made. He also does the stupid thing a lot of bad/new writers do to keep their “op mc” in check and purposely have take away their accomplishments right when they do them. which is stupid it add nothing to the story and only makes it feel like you are stunting the character for the stories sake because you can’t write a way for it to work. frustrating and it’s is in every single one of his books. I’ll give him another year or so hopefully by than he has matures into a better writer.

Good so far, just super short

I didn't expect any books by this author to be profanity free, but this one was. I didn't see any elements that were "adult" in nature, so I would recommend the book even to pre-teens.

The story itself wasn't anything super unique, but I liked the back story on the MC as it did give some decent reasons the MC would be OP for his level.

All in all, decent start to a new series, I'll update if future books in the series make any major turns from that.

This was a very interesting book that could turn off some people while appealing to others. The world is heavily gamey very similar to the Monster Hunter video game series. The story revolves around Keith, who is thrust into this world and must now follow a series of quests that include solving mysteries and slaying monsters.

The book itself is not deep or analytical. It is an enjoyable popcorn read and is engaging throughout. Keith the main character is neither overly good nor overly evil, often pragmatic while making concrete rational decisions. While some things about his past lives are a bit hand waved, it is easy to gloss over due to the world itself being full of mystery. The monsters seem interesting and the quests and items seem thought out. The system is a bit of a mystery itself and I hope more is revealed. The story itself while simplistic, is quick paced without too much down time, something that I quite enjoyed. Action is described well, with a good mix of power fantasy and underdog, as Keith is constantly battling difficult foes but has certain advantages that help him survive. Other than the MC, the rest of the characters are a bit bland and do not seem to have much personality. Oftentimes it felt like the side characters were more props for the MC rather than lived in characters. Bob the monkey was fine. He could be annoying on occasion but I found him an ok method of info-dumping.

A good start to a new LitRPG, the setup and world are both very good and I really like the characters. It's a bit crunchy but not too much and the progressions all make sense and are fair.

KU Review

After a string of books with serious tones and debating the morality of actions, this was a welcome progression novel with just the right amount of action and humor.

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.

Garbage

Not an original idea to be seen. The only reason this isn’t a one star review is that the author at least had a semi decent editor. All characters are bland and shallow, humour is boring and story in general is vague and unappealing. I feel sad having read this book as it is just a waste of time.

This book is like little Timmy's first LitRPG. There's so much explaining of the bog-standard levelling system that we're nearly half way through before it trails off. Lots of room to skim for anyone familiar with the genre.

There's not a lot that makes the story stand out. I do like the idea of a recidivist Isekai protagonist. Not much is done with that gimmick though, it just results in our hero having a bunch of weapon master classes. Everything lacks depth, but remains easily consumed.

I particularly dislike the idea that "there's always a way out." Apparently the "System" subscribes to God's approach of never giving you a burden too heavy to be carried. This reduces the stakes and makes the characters' challenges seem set on rails.

I did buy the three book bundle, so I'm continuing into the series in hopes of improvement. At least the dull explanations should be mostly over.

Inconsistent, Weirdly Paced, Boring Characters.

To preface what I'm about to say, I only made it about 55% of the way through this book. I really wanted to like this book since I like the game monster hunter, and this book supposedly drew some inspiration from it. That being said, the book does not at all feel anything like monster hunter. The way skills work doesn't make sense. The mc supposedly has incredible skills but struggles in every fight. The progression feels off or just strange in general the mc seems to be gaining levels very quickly and I realize he has a buff to learning and fights solo but you can't tell me there aren't other people who fight solo and have fast learning especially since 1/4 or something of the world is otherworlders like him. A key part of monster hunter and most other games with similarities to litrpgs is teamwork, so you'd think this book would have interesting supporting characters or teammates. Nope, they're extremely boring and forgettable. They have zero deeper personality or backstory. Boring side characters are usually fine in a story if you have an interesting main character that pulls along the narrative. This is not the case with We Hunt Monsters. The introduction we get to Keith at the beginning of the story is the most interesting part about him. From there, it's just downhill. Keith comes off as very childish and impulsive, for being hundreds of years old he doesn't act his age and doesn't draw from any of his past wisdom. He has very little personality and really doesn't have any deeper thoughts, emotions, or inner dialogue. His motivation is also a mystery other than the very basic overview we got at the beginning when he was making the deal. He decides not to use bladed weapons because they can get stuck, but fails to take into account everyone is swinging around monstrously big weapons so I don't know maybe enhanced strength and speed along with active skills would completely negate that issue. Also, he has an inventory, so I don't know maybe pack multiple weapons. He's mastered multiple so why not use multiple. He refuses to use long ranged weapons for stupid reasons and ignores magic and instead just decides to use his fist which brings him significantly closer to the action and more likely to be injured and killed like he was trying to avoid. He somehow has master rank in martial arts even though he said he almost always used bladed weapons in his previous lives. When he fights, it's also pointed out that he does way more damage with bladed weapons even though he's only at advanced rank in bladed weapons mastery. The difference between monsters in the open world vs. dungeons don't make sense. The quests are extremely simplistic and are basically just go here or get this. Keith needs to come up with a better curse word than poop, like seriously hundreds or years old multitudes of languages learned, and the best he's got is "poop." Every time he says it, the immersion in the story and any tension is broken and not in a good way. He says it a ton. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it.

Not your average litrpg.
not the common sassy MC.
not the common OP MC. (it actually makes sense.)
the danger is ACCTUALLY dangerous and he actually almost dies. though when the "debuffs" go away everything is fixed like magic so eh?
I REALLY want book 2.
there's something different about this series. there's not a lot of..."woe is me" in here. at least, i don't FEEL a lot of "woe is me". you're reminded of his situation and the stakes of his situation...but he doesn't DWELL on it...ya know? there aren't a lot of tears or time for feels...and that alone...gives it a sense of urgency almost. Like the moment you realize you SHOULD feel bad for this guy its too late and you end up feeling guilty instead.
and then there's the trickster and how this world is operating...you're not given a lot of info but you KNOW there's a reason this world was picked...
i REALLY want book 2.

2 SMALL SPOILERS
that exchange where she hits him and he leaves her behind WAS SO REFRESHING IT WAS AWESOME!! it was the best part. it was so small compared to the whole book but it was so SOLID in their personalities. I love she acts like a girl and he acts like a guy, ya know? She doesn't wanna get grabbed and he does his thing with only one task in mind at a time. The EPITOME of mutitaskers VS goal setters. i LOVE it. not many get this. in fact VEERY FEW can get this in a character and i LOVE the author with ALL MY HEART for this single exchange.

The other best part was the "wack-a-mole" baddie that was hysterical. i'm not sure the author was aware that's how he wrote it because the whole thing sounded serious, but i was CRYING laughing the WHOLE TIME. (which was also hard cause i was at work sweeping and mopping floors at the time). but goodness, it was so funny~

Solid LitRPG

Fun read. This is a bit of a variation/combination
of a portal or a reincarnation litRPG. Without giving much away, the main character (MC) lives multiple lives trying to fulfill the requirements of a bargain he made to help his family. He renegotiates the deal and is sent to a world with a system (pretty standard mechanics). He enters this world with the equivalent of a legendary quest chain and a bunch of overpowered skills, though he is still level one so he doesn’t exactly have an easy time with different fights and such.
I liked the MC, though I hope we see more development of him and the supporting characters in the next book. I also can’t wait for our main character to go out and show us more of the world! I’ll definitely be reading the next one!

Give the poop a rest

It was an ok story. There was a bit too much plot armor for my taste. The MC is a bit of a jerk although I do like the reasoning behind it. I was really waiting for him to scream "get off my lawn" at the last monster.

Some things I really didn't like:
Modern day talking "umm, rude!"
The over use of the word 'poop'
The use of the word 'literally' - used 9 times in this book and it shouldn't have been used once
The Jared character surviving

Nothing really wrong with it, but it just didn't clear the bar for a 5. I'm not certain what the intent is for this series, but extrapolating from this book, there will be at least ten. Not sure it'll hold my attention that long (few things do), but I'll read the next one and see where things are going.

Happy summer solstice, btw.

book one

Mistakes: I found three and posted them on Goodreads. Kind of a short fast read.

Plot: This story could be helped with a slightly slower pace and more details on the world.

Characters: More information on the MC would also be nice.

DNF. The book wasn't bad, really, just indulged in too many things I don't enjoy.

The plot is too heavily on rails, to the point that one character got censored by the System for deviating from their scripted role too much. MC gets a quest, completes his quest, gets his next quest, completes his next quest ... maybe the intent was for it to read like a novelization of a mmorpg questing session, in which case, nailed it.

If you are going to write litrpg, the stats can't just be window dressing. The MC starts off ridiculously overpowered, on the order of having anywhere from a 10x to 20x damage multiplier, and barely survived a fight with a level 2 monster. Remove his damage multiplier and a regular level 1 or 2 character would have spent three days whittling down one monster's hit points. It just makes no sense.

Lastly, I hate MCs with poor decision-making abilities, especially those with literally a dozen lifetimes of experience to draw on. The entire premise that the MC refuses to use bladed weapons because he somehow constructed this narrative that they are responsible for his past deaths and instead insists on wanting to fight everything barehanded is absurd. Use your fists as a fallback, don't handicap yourself out of the gate. It's like refusing to bring a gun to a knife fight because you might run out of bullets.

Asking favors of godlike beings never goes well

Keith somehow entangled himself with a godlike being 3 or 4 hundred years ago and has died many times now for his entertainment.
Keith’s last life was over a hundred years and he once again left a family behind, wife, kids and even grandkids as he died in battle as usual. Fed us he finally demands an end to the countless lives and deaths and is given a hardcore world to go to this time with a quest to defeat the 5 world bosses. Then he will be sent back to his brothers and his parents will be brought back to life as well, this is his true goal.

He just has to grow from level 1 to where he can challenge an increasing level and strength of world bosses starting around level 35. He did get to keep his skills from previous lives and he has some advanced ones, however after multiple deaths from bladed weapon mishaps, he has decided not to use them this life… sadly that may be difficult with epic monsters and raid bosses ahead, as well as a conspiracy quest that he falls into. Good luck Keith, you will need it.

Pretty standard stuff. Isekai with OP protagonist who keeps winning fights far above his weight class. The world, it's economy, it's social structures etc. wouldn't function except it's a video game. The video game itself wouldn't function as it's just some random numbers. It's a video game that would suck to play and is even worse to read about someone playing it.

Main character doesn't really function anymore than the game world. He has a backstory that is supposed to motivate him and we're to pity him for but he's lived hundreds of years happily so... okay. He has a hang up about using weapons but immediately drops that to use weapons. So... okay. People keep giving him stuff for no reason, he gets huge rewards for everything he does, rare classes etc. It's all pretty dumb and boring. None of the game aspect of it was worked out or makes any sense, it's just random numbers occasionally thrown at the reader for no reason. Oh, and he has a talking monkey to tell him everything so he doesn't have to discover anything for himself.

It's not a bad book, but it's not a good one, the setup could have been epic, and the potential for a gritty world and all that, but it continuously feels like the writer is trying to make a 18+ story into a 11 below story.
The plot went from could be awesome to just lazy, and the whole weapons thing is just bad, and there are a lot of many things that are wasted potential.
Imagine you see a phone in a store, and it has like a super nice design, cool colour, nice feel when you hold it in your hand and other nice cosmetic features, but the moment you switch it on, it's an android 2.0, and just imagine that feeling , that is how you will feel reading this book.
All the above is for people who have read other litrpg books and are aware of some basic tropes, but if this is your first book, then I suggest you go somewhere else, cause this might just drive you away from this book.
A few recommendations from me,
1 the primal hunter
2 chaos seed
3 he who hunt monsters

Slammed this one down over breakfast and lunch, its not exactly groundbreaking or anything, but it reads well enough. Sometimes its weird that something first gets explained in speech, and then immediatly after it gets explained again in the literal next sentence.
The setting is fine, its your usual world with a system and XP and monsters, basically this book (and the sequels from what I can gather after having read the second book aswell) is like scrambled eggs. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done, rarely disappoints and can be quite good at moments. I havent looked it up but I would guess this was orinigally released as a webnovel, because it reads like one. Things are often repeated, although I thank the author for mostly showing an abridged status screen instead of the entire thing every 5 pages.
Over all if you like litRPGs then youll probably like this one, its nothing new or revolutionary but it executes its ideas well enough

We Hunt Monsters was a great Westernized novel of light novels from the Eastern Hemisphere. I really enjoyed the writing from Aaron Oster.

I have always wanted to write or read a book that was in this format, a westernized isekai novel. This accomplished that. Keith is a wonderful more western type of character. I have read a lot of light novels with Eastern culture hemispheres of culture, Japanese or Korean. It was a cool take on a isekai novel.

Keith and his monkey guide were very enjoyable to read throughout the book. The monsters and other RPG lores were so much fun to read. I really like reading about the stats for Keith and his companions. This as close as you can get to a Young Adult novel that is a westernized light novel isekai.

This was short, entertaining, and overall a good story. It was full of action, but never felt too rushed. There is just enough normal goings on to keep the story grounded, but with more than enough progress to make it a good read.
I never felt bored, or thought the story stalled out. The main character isn’t the most interesting person, but there is a lot of room for him to make a big splash in the world as the series continues. I’d like to see more secondary characters to round out the cast, but maybe that comes in later…I’m not sure.
It wasn’t offensively bad like so many LitRPG novels, even if people on this site don’t understand the genre enough to get that. Nothing to blow your socks off, but neither is it bad, a perfectly acceptable first book in a litRPG series.

More fun than I expected

I had seen this pop up as suggested a few times, and wasn’t sure I would enjoy it. When I Aaron Oster wrote it, I thought I’d give it a go.

From early on, I knew I would have a fun time. A character that was stubborn enough to go after the difficult route, rather than the easy one, was after my own heart.

A combination of monster hunter and maybe Skyrim with the cold winter setting, I think the story pulls off a fun start to what I hope is a long series.

I’ll keep an eye out for book 2!

A good weekend read

Overall this book was good, but not great. The MC is reincarnated, for the umpteenth time, into a game system type world and from there has to survive in the typical fashion. His major motivation is to get back to Earth and his life there thanks to a delay fig some higher power. The system and mechanics are good, the story was ok, and I found the ending reasonable enough to go on to book 2. The downsides being the MC not having a lot of personality besides “grit and determination” and a tendency to go for crotch shots.

In order for Keith to return to his family on earth he must survive an defeat this new world .

Keith has been traveling thru worlds for the last 100+ years or so by working for an immortal trickster with the deal they have struck by means of an contract . Right when he was all but finished with his contract he was killed at the last second an transported to a another World like any he ever seen or imagined before but a new contract was sealed this was he's last world survive or not at all an forced servitude for all eternity . recommend reading excellent book .

The book 1/3 stats screen, 1/3 of descriptions of the RPG world everyone already knows, and then the last 1/3 has a little story mixed in with cookie-cutter commentary from an annoying sassy pet. Not only the MC's stat screen, let's read out item information, monster information and stats.

MC apparently lived many lives but still acts like he's 15 and dumbb. Halfway through the book, he only reaches his first real fight and it's boxing with a rat as a dungeon boss. No, not joking.

There's nothing really worth reading here. Don't waste your time.

Such a fun read

A well written fantasy litrpg. Not epic, but a lot of fun! Proof that a good author doesn't need sex or foul language to "spice it up".

My only real criticism is that the MC is a bit hard to truly like. His past has made him a little bit heartless and ruthless. However, he isn't a complete dirt bag and does try to help people do what is best for everyone whenever it doesn't cost himself too much.

Warning, if you are not into mild-moderate blood and gore, constant fighting, death and destruction, then this may not be for you.

Ticked every box for the types of things that are good about this genre. There was reincarnation into new worlds, game like system interfaces, quests, distinct lack of political and sexualization, and even a bit of intrigue. Unfortunately, the storytelling was paper thin, leaving me as the reader simultaneously unable to invest into any of the characters nor care about any of their plights. If you just want endless action sequences, this may be the book for you. If you expect more, look elsewhere. This author's other works such as Buryoku are very solid options.

Okay Story

This story of a multiple reborn guy going to a rpg world for the first time was kinda a good read. My problem with this story was I expected monster hunting, instead I got a guild war mystery type story. He is also a blade master who refuses to use blades. Even with that, he rather use his fist to fight animal monsters, instead of at least getting a stick staff to fight.
