After transmigrating, Chi Muyao was locked in a ‘small dark room’ aka a cave, with the main villain Xi Huai. The demonic cultivator’s body was chained up and his spiritual energy sealed.
Chi Muyao’s situation was…awkward to say the least. He needed to dual cultivate to the Foundation Building Stage in order to lift the restriction on the cave so they could be rescued.
However…he’s a male disciple of the He Huan Sect ahhhhhh! Who was he supposed to cultivate with, the main villain??
Everyone who’s read the book he transmigrated into knew that the cannon fodder who used Xi Huai to dual cultivate died an exceptionally terrible death.
Run! He had to skedaddle as soon as the restriction was lifted! __________________________________________________________ 1.
English title: The Demon Venerable's Wistful Desire
Chi Muyao—a transmigrator—is forced to use Xi Huai, the book’s villain, to dual-cultivate and advance his cultivation level in order to escape captivity. Once they manage to escape, Chi Muyao wastes no time disappearing and does everything he can to stay hidden. Meanwhile, Xi Huai searches high and low for him—but not for revenge, as it turns out.
This is a xianxia filled with fascinating, if familiar, elements: the classic clash between righteous and demonic sects, navigating various formations and illusionary worlds, encounters with spirit beasts, and, of course, leveling up in cultivation.
The romance is a prolonged game of cat-and-mouse until the inevitable happens and they finally get together. It’s sprinkled with comedy, fade-to-black smut, and plenty of sweet moments.
I particularly enjoyed the three sects Chi Muyao is associated with and how distinct they are. There’s also a good variety of interesting side characters, but sadly, many—like Xi Huai’s two best friends—aren’t explored to their full potential.
In short, it’s an enjoyable read but nothing too deep or groundbreaking.
Xi Huai: "This is just temporary. We’re dual cultivating to accumulate power and get out of here. I’m not interested in you, so don’t expect anything from me. After this, we go our separate ways."
Also Xi Huai (three chapters later): "So... how would you feel about being my wife?"
Amazing read—exactly what I like. But that’s also the problem: it’s exactly what I like. It reminds me so much of my first and most loved danmei, SSVS. I’m dropping this at 44%, not because it’s bad, but because I can already see where the plot is going. The main leads are basically together, the villain has made his move—so for me, it’s done.
That said, I absolutely encourage anyone who’s interested to pick it up.

I read this in Chinese, it is quite short. 109 chapters with 3 extras.
Happy ending if it's not obvious enough, the part where Xi Huai chasing Chi Muyao after they left the cave was quite interesting~ and I'm glad the author didn't make Chi Muyao into a powerful main character of some sort. He has his strength but he is definitely not someone who can wantonly fight anyone in the story and win.
One of the villains in this story, Su You, actually have quite a good background story too. I would love to read some extras about Guannan Tianzun love story too but I guess it's not included in the book. The author mentioned that she will post it in her weibo but I couldn't find it.
The 3 extra chapters are about Chi Muyao and Xi Huai in the modern world, not much connections with the original story. It's still pretty sweet too read though~
I thought I would start this story for fun, but it really sucked me in. It was a great mix of humor, engaging plot, and spicy romance. I'm so glad they "uncensored" some of the smut in the translation - it was great. The mc should have come across as overpowered and op, but he actually seemed pretty deserving because he was so hard working. It sometimes did feel like the mc had just managed to grab all the original protagonist's golden fingers.
The transmigration is never explained, or why there's no high level cultivators anymore. I liked the extra, but felt the way it was presented made it feel like the transmigration was just a dream, which was disheartening.
I did think the different portrayal of love was nice - we get to see how the mc/ml could have ended up if the ml never learned to tone it down and try to adjust his pursuit to what the mc might actually like. There are many relationships with the pursue-them-until-you-wear-them-out trope. I didn't mind, since it was mostly done for the humor, but I think some people might find it objectionable.
English title: The Demon Venerable’s Wistful Desire
I enjoyed this book more than I expected to, mainly because of how clingy the ML is. He's one of the most powerful figures in the cultivation world, and all he wants to do is dual cultivate with the MC and cling to him XP
The story starts out with the main character, Chi Muyao, transmigrating into a novel as a cannon fodder character. He's locked up in a dark cave with our ML, Xi Huai, the main villain of the novel. Xi Huai is all locked up and his energy suppressed, so he can't do anything to help. And unfortunately Chi Muyao is a super weak cultivator who's not powerful enough to break them out. He's a member of the He Huan sect, who specializes in dual cultivation to increase their spirit energy, so in the original novel, he dual cultivates with an unwilling ML and makes the ML hate him so much that even after they escape the cave, he's targeted by the ML and eventually killed.
Because he knows how the book ends, Chi Muyao doesn't want to have anything to do with Xi Huai. Unfortunately, because of their situation they have no choice, and Xi Huai eventually agrees to the dual cultivation. It takes them 3+ years before Chi Muyao gets enough energy and becomes strong enough to break them out of the cave, but in that time, Xi Huai has become quite enamored of CMY and is determined to bring him back to his sect.
Unfortunately, Chi Muyao has other ideas... in the time they spent in the cave, everything was pitch black, so Xi Huai has no idea what Chi Muyao looks like. All he knows is that he's the only male cultivator from the He Huan sect and is old enough to be his grandpa. That becomes a problem for him, as he spends the next 2 years searching all over the cultivation world for Chi Muyao, to no avail. In the meantime, CMY has joined a super low key cultivation sect that focuses on raising spirit beasts to hide and pass his days. Eventually they meet in a secret realm, but due to Chi Muyao's disguise and extremely good looks, Xi Huai only has a suspicion that it's him but can't say for sure. The story continues on in this way until Xi Huai has identified CMY, but it takes for awhile for CMY to start liking him and return his feelings.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
Overall it's a cute story, and it was touching to see how well Xi Huai treats Chi Muyao. He shows everyone else his tough, demonic cultivator side, but in front of CMY he's like a clingy dog that gets jealous at the slightest interaction the MC has with anything else. And who on earth would go around proudly telling everyone that they're being used as a furnace for dual cultivation?? Only our silly ML XP
A lot of the book focuses on their relationship and the long one-sided romance, but there is somewhat of a story as well. Initially, like any cultivation story, our main characters go into a secret realm for a chance encounter and to find treasures. Then they stuck in various formations and have to figure out how to escape. There's also a pesky super powerful demonic cultivator running around causing issues, so while our main characters are figuring out their feelings, they also have to take care of this cultivator and also keep their demonic sects safe from the righteous sects, but that's really it for the story. The various story elements were independent of each other rather than being woven into one flowing thread.
There are some side characters that consistently make an appearance, mostly other sect member from the MC and ML's sects, but imo none of them really stood out. My favorite was probably the He Huan sect leader, who's been hiding in the Nuan Yan Pavilion for a while as the cultivation partner of a powerful sect member. I was definitely rooting for them as a second pairing. There are also some cute pets, like the MC's dumb oriole who keeps recognizing the ML as his daddy but can also transform into a phoenix as needed to protect the MC XP
There are some hilarious scenes though. I wasn't quite cracking up but was definitely smiling for some of them. Here are some examples:
The ML and his friends are comparing their situations after sleeping with He Huan members
Xi Huai looked at Zong Sichen without saying anything.
Still crying, Zong Sichen went to tug Xi Huai's sleeve instead. "Young Sect Master, she refuses to take responsibility-after sleeping with me for months! You have to seek justice for me!"
Xi Huai suddenly roared, "I'm still looking for someone to be responsible for me!"
Zong Sichen suddenly felt better. After all, at least he could still find the person he slept with and know what she looked like.
Song Weiyue couldn't watch this go on any longer. He comforted Zong Sichen, "Look on the bright side, sleeping with a granny beats sleeping with a grandma, right?"
A moment later, Zong Sichen watched as Xi Huai kicked Song Weiyue out the window. Agonised cries soon followed.
-----------------------
hahaha when the Qing Ze Sect's bad reputation is getting ruined by Xi Huai, cause he's going around saving people who might be the MC
Xi Lin's palm slammed down on the table. "Going around saving people and doing good deeds?? What were you thinking?! How am I supposed to face people after this?!"
Song Weiyue hurriedly kneeled down to explain, "Sect Master, the Young Sect Master wasn't deliberately trying to save anyone, he was just worried that the person he was looking for was in that group of people! That's why he saved them all. Please don't blame him!"
Xi Lin ignored Song Weiyue and continued to scold Xi Huai, "You should know clearly what you can and cannot do."
Song Weiyue again answered for Xi Huai. "From now on, we'll definitely burn, kill and pillage when we go out. We won't let down everyone's expectations of us."
Xi Huai rolled his eyes at that.
In the past, the Qing Ze Sect had a a terrible reputation and Xi Lin was also considered infamous.
But after Xi Huai saved a few people when he went out a few times, the reputation of the Qing Ze Sect somehow gradually got better.
A few days ago, Xi Lin's old friend came and said reprovingly, "Old Dragon Xi, is your Qing Ze Sect planning to join the renowned righteous sects, ah? What, you're not satisfied with the demonic faction anymore? You haven't learned the teachings of the righteous side, but you sure act like you did."
After being reproved, Xi Lin was so embarrassed that he simply confined Xi Huai.
-----------------------
It's hilarious how proud of his furnace position Xi Huai is
He just relaxed and continued to eat his pastry when he heard Xi Huai say, "Since you plan to break through to the Golden Core stage, I should help you consolidate your cultivation."
"En? Consolidate my cultivation?"
His voice was muddled because his mouth was full. "How?"
"I'm a furnace!"
Chi Muyao seemed to never think that someone would say those words so righteously and naturally one day. He even forgot to chew.
He stared, dumbfounded, at Xi Huai for a long time before swallowing what was in his mouth and replying, "No need, no need! You're a normal person now, not my furnace!"
"Once a furnace, always a furnace. How could you abandon me half-way through?"
"How could this be me abandoning you? We agreed in the cave that dual cultivation was just for opening the restriction, how did it become a lifetime promise?"
"From the first time you swallowed my thing, you became responsible for me. Is that something you can swallow willy nilly?"
"Responsible? You're the one fucking me!"
"But you defiled me!
-----------------------
Our classic clingy ML who only has one thing on our mind XP
The greatest villain in the entire book wasn't trying to destroy the world, didn't oppose the male and female protagonists, and wasn't seriously working as the demonic lord plotting to unify the three realms. Instead, he spent his days like a resentful husband, bickering over all sorts of strange things.
For example-
Xi Huai, with a dark expression, said, "You weren't fully committed during our dual cultivation this time."
How does one measure commitment? Was he supposed to recite a poem afterward in appreciation?
Jajajaj 🤣
I read this book in machine translation a few years ago, but I want to reread this one more time. I really like it. Now I'm trying to downoad it to kindle whitepaper... God, please, help me. Oh, and my opinion about this... You difinitely must read it.
I'm mostly leaving this review as a note to myself, b/c I'm guaranteed not to remember ANYTHING about this in, like, six months or less...
So anyway, what I picked it up for:
--the AO3 page of the day looked really boring & I wanted a dumbass premise to laugh at
What pissed me off:
Like, DEMONIC LADIES across webnovels are allowed to be GOOD at sex! enjoy it! not be a virgin! DEMONIC CULTIVATOR GUY has been around for what, 80 years? 90? and he still cried tears of shou pain bc he didn't know how to take it up his backdoor! what the hell is this fetish? HE KNEW THIS WAS GONNA HAPPEN
--like, I like transmigrator novels for the clash of modern view vs fantasy mindset, sheer comedy of people living out ttly wrong genre, etc. Authors do transmigrator MC... just so they can abbreviate the plot and never actually make their status as out-worlder into anything key to the plot or their arc or smth.
This is really 2 stories in the same xianxia robe: one abt really bad dual cultivation times and another about cool escapes and spiritual beast contracts (my favourite part!) I'd read a proper short novel just abt Chi Muyao & the Beast Taming sect and him fishing and it would be cute!
The ML is... well. Falls in love after 3 years of a guy sleeping with him through the pain and talking to him like a person? Okaaaay, I don't even have the energy to feel sorry for him, he's just not 3D enough to feel real.

Part comedy, part seriousness. Oh, and a lot of Xi Huai chasing after Chi Muyao. Unlike the usual transmigration books, Chi Muyao is similar to Shang Qinghua in SVSSS-- he spent nearly a century in the book he read by chance. A nerd who died from overexhaustion in real life, he utilizes his intelligence and knowledge about the book to survive.
It doesn't divulge too much into cultivation levels, nor are there any unnecessary misunderstanding (the biggest one dilutes to a comedic scene that leaves Xi Huai quite embarrassed). Both of the protagonists are cute, would do anything to save each other, and someone needs to save Chi Muyao's poor back and knees. If you're only reading for an easy romance and not too political or plot heavy, then I'd suggest this. However, I'd love for the author to explore the side character more, as the end still left unresolved questions. I did love how the author didn't write stereotypical portrayals of women in cultivation novels, but painted them as intelligent and resourceful.
Overall, I enjoyed it! I do think the first half was more entertaining than the second half which honestly could have been cut down by at least twenty chapters. It was pretty fluffy with the main plot being the ML chasing the MC and then them bickering because the MC doesn't pay attention to the ML 100% of the time.
Summary: The MC transmigrates into a book he was reading as the cannon fodder who forced dual cultivation on the book's villain which started his road to blackening. However the MC does too good of a job of dual cultivating for three years and leaves an impression on the villain/ML. The MC originally plans to hide and live a simple life so that the ML doesn't have to embarrassment of being made into a furnace but the ML spends two years looking for him to make him his wife. Clinging ensues.

It has everything I want in a novel, an all in one package and I absolutely love it!!! The only downside though is that, IT'S TOO SHORT!!!
I'm gonna miss everyone in this novel. I absolutely love the in Laws and the spirit beast are all gorgeous. And the part where Chi Muyao was shown his deepest desire was to cuddle cats, I was totally done for, I love him so much!!!
very nice MC did make me mad a lot but he came through at moments so i didn't completely hate him. I loved ML until he also started to make me mad at the end but i liked him otherwise. The plot was interesting and not too complicated. Side characters were good for the most part. I am still lost about certain things like MCs transmigation and how he was kidnapped in the first place. Also some characters kinda disappeared halfway through so that was a little confusing too
Rating: 5/5 - I’m a sucker for good xuanhuan and this delivered, and delivered well.
Chi Muyao is a lovable fool who is a bit annoying in the beginning with his « I don’t like him » nonsense - but for good reason.
The thing that stands out about this read is how amazing the supporting characters are. The He Huan and Qing Ze sects are simply amazing and the cute spirit animals are just as adorable.
Overall this was such a great read that I couldn’t put down! Highly recommend.
4.5 Loved it!!!!! The plot was entertaining, the characters really interesting and romance was so sweet. I loved that we got to see both of them trying to convince the other that they were in love with them. Only bad thing was the dubious consent at times but overall I really enjoyed this one. Might be worth a reread
The storyline is solid but damn, this should have been a series. I’ve felt that the book could have ended a few times and didn’t need to be this long - my only complaint
