Moss and Wolf Case Files #2

Ghosts of Rome: Moss and Wolf Case Files 2

Rate this book
After exploring the mind of the serial killer H.H. Holmes, Charlotte Moss decides that escaping Terminus for a breather is in the cards. So she and her partner turned boyfriend, Brutus “Wolf” Nycanthus, head to the South of France for some fun in the sun. However, a one-off comment about the pizza being a far cry from truly authentic leads to them traveling out of France and to the heart of the renaissance, Italy.

Being so close to so much history and culture soon led to them traveling further into the country. Straight to where all roads lead, Rome. A city that Brutus had been taking every road to avoid for years because it was where he lost everything so many years ago.

But surely things had changed in the thousands of years he’d been gone? And it wasn’t as though he left his enemies alive to haunt him. They could return to the city and have a nice normal time… Or as normal a time you could have with a psychic detective and a city full of history, which means lunch was interrupted by a ghost. While they aren't happy about the intrusion into their holiday, nothing dangerous could possibly begin from the spirit of an old man just looking to deliver one last message to his wife, right?

Follow Charlie and Brutus on their next adventure leaping into the heart of not only his past but their own hearts as they learn sometimes what one believes is the end is only the beginning of something else.

Ghosts of Rome is aptly titled. It is the second book in the Moss and Wolf Case files and it carries the series forward quite well. While this is mostly the unfolding of a dynamic love story, it is also an intense jaunt into the past of Brutus. It also speaks to acceptance all parts of those we profess to love, and defines the difference between justice and revenge.

The drama is intense, as is the paranormal action and romance. There were times that the storyline dragged as the past and future melded, and in those pages, I tended to skim through those parts. I still highly recommend the series and this book.

“Ghosts of Rome” by Brittany Williams and JJ White is book two in the “Moss & Wolf Case Files” series. It is a low-spice, paranormal romance mystery. Charlie and Brutus’ European vacation becomes muddled by scheming Roman gods, past lives, and loss when they return to Brutus’ native Rome in search of authentic pizza.

After stopping H.H.Holmes, partners-turned-lovers Charlie and Brutus decide to follow through with their plan and go on vacation to the South of France. After tasting pizza and deeming it not true pizza, they venture to Rome, the one place Brutus has avoided for centuries. The roads are quiet despite the age of Rome, much to the surprise of psychic Charlie. So when a spirit asks them to deliver a message to his wife at their family's vineyard, what harm could it be? Suddenly, Brutus’ past has come back in full force, and the gods are plotting. Will the Wolf of Janus be enough to stop them? Can Charlie handle to truth of Brutus’ past?

This book answered A LOT of the questions that I had after reading book one, “No Bones About It.” We were treated to Brutus’ backstory and glimpses of his painful past and the lives he’s lived over the last thousand years. We see his love, his grief, his loss, and the path of destruction in his wake. We see his “comeback.” We see ghosts of his past and each of their different emotions: fear, anger, love, and admiration. Charlie and I have one major question: What does Janus want with his Wolf?

We meet several Roman gods in this book, and they are PLOTTING. There is a scene with Nerio, the Goddess of Valor, that is a resounding favorite of mine. I felt Charlie’s tenacity and her fury, and picturing her battle-ready was phenomenal. Watching Brutus with Ares had me on edge and also laughing (solely due to Brutus’s beastliness) and seeing Venus… I could understand why people would want to fight her. I wanted to jump through my screen! We’re also treated to the adorable three-headed Cerberus, who strangely reminded me of the 3 hyenas from “The Lion King”, and he 100% deserves pets and treats.

While a low-spice story, the relationship aspect between Brutus and Charlie is strong. They are two people who have known each other for so long but are having to learn about each other in new ways. Their love is tested on multiple fronts from different forces, and while heartbreaking, it was palpable. Seeing the lengths each of them was willing to go for each other was so heartening. There is a scene between Brutus, Charlie, and a ghost that broke my heart and simultaneously put it back together.

Synopsis: Brutus and Charlie set out on vacation to his birthplace of Rome. What starts as a relaxing vacation quickly turns into a supernatural case when a ghost pleads with Charlie to deliver a final message to his widow at a local vineyard. While meeting the widow, they’re met with a portrait of Brutus from another lifetime, and whispers of a forgotten past. However, ancient Rome hasn’t forgotten Brutus, or forgiven him. As gods and ghosts awaken, Charlie is pulled into a divine conflict when warned by a goddess of an upcoming war. Meanwhile, Brutus faces a full moon werewolf transformation, and seeks refuge in his old lodgings. There Brutus and Charlie are confronted with memories and hard truths they have to brave together. Charlie is later kidnapped by another goddess, hoping to use her as a pawn and resurrect her husband that Brutus killed long ago. In order to save Charlie and stop the ensuing chaos, Brutus must battle to the death gladiator style. While ultimately victorious, Brutus experiences physical, emotional, and cosmic turmoil. The gods are now silenced and Brutus and Charlie return home relieved, yet changed. They both wrestle with uncertain futures, but agree to face it together with each others’ love and support.

Thoughts: This was a great second installment to the Moss and Wolf Case Files. I was very curious about Brutus after the first book because he was such a mystery, and we definitely got all the tea on his backstory. My heart broke for him after learning about all his losses, and the manipulation and control the gods had over his life. He is an incredibly strong character, and not just physically. Charlie seems to be the absolute perfect person for him. She keeps things light and fun, but also knows what to do when Brutus needs her to be strong. This leads to my favorite part where she comforts him, after breaking down in the temple. They both were faced with difficult truths, except it was memories for Brutus and new information for Charlie. I loved seeing the character growth Charlie goes through in this book. She was already formidable and competent, but perhaps naive about certain things, in particular Brutus and his whole being. It’s hard to fully comprehend someone who’s lived two millennia, but after her experiences in Rome, I think she truly understands Brutus and is worthy of him. They complete each other by providing exactly what the others needs. I’m so glad Brutus found love again with Charlie, and he did pose a good question about his future with her. Currently he is immortal and she is not to our knowledge. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out, and I look forward to reading about their next adventure.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I enjoyed this book way more than the first. Charlie and Brutus as on vacation after dealing with a nasty lich. After Charlie mentions delish pizza Brutus mentions the best is in Italy....so off they go to Rome. Something is off in the city of Rome. There is an eerie feeling and lack of ghosts make Charlie and Brutus question what's going on. Charlie meets on ghost named Giovanni who tells him to give a msg to his wife out at a vineyard. An unexpected turn happens at thr vineyard that depicts Brutus as a young man saving the grapes. Brutus is brought forth into a dream by an old frenemy Morpheous who has a msg for him albeit a not so happy way. Charlie herself is under a trance of sorts going thru an ancient battle to stand next to the goddess Nerio who needs a warning as well...the gods are no longer silent and they will need to be for one another of they are to meet them head on. On top of that its a full moon soon so Brutus and Charlie going into thr underbelly of Rome go Janus' temple. Charlie didn't realize the depth of life Brutus had lead and isn't prepared to see it. Will Charlie and Brutus be victorious or will they become a casualty.

I didn't think the story could get better after book one, but Ghosts of Rome proved me wrong. After the intense (for lack of better words) events of the first book, Charlie and Brutus have earned their much-needed time away from the paranormal...so they chose to vacation in Rome.

Right off the bat I laughed at the thought having a rest in one of the oldest and most haunted cities in the world. I loved that the readers got more of a background on Brutus which really added depth to his mysterious character. He still had deep love for his life and people in the past while still being deeply in love with and devoted to his current life with Charlie. It felt realistic as well with Charlie having to confront and navigate those feelings as well.
There was no lack of paranormal activity with ghosts and gods abound in Rome. And my favorite character? Cerberus. IYKYK. Ghosts of Rome is definitely my favorite in the series so far. It was action packed, we saw much more of Brutus as a whole person/wolf, and better understanding of his nature and culture, as well as a more bad ass side of Charlie. I can't wait to read about their next case...where will it take them this time??

Revisiting the city of his past.

After their last case P.I. Charlie Moss and her partner, now boyfriend, Brutus Nycanthus decide time away from Terminus City is just what they need to relax and unwind, so it’s off to the South of France they go. However, a conversation about authentic Italian pizza has them taking a side trip to Rome, a place Brutus swore he would never go back to, but it is what Charlie wants, and he can never refuse her anything she desires. Rome is an ancient city, but it doesn’t take long for Charlie to realize that it seems strangely devoid of ghosts wanting her attention. All except one, an old man who wants Charlie to deliver a message to his beloved wife. That simple task soon turns into a struggle for them to survive the machinations of gods.
These are such unique and wonderfully written characters that I found it difficult to put this book down. Divine mayhem, a little bit of a mystery, unexpected twists, exciting action, and bloody violence make this a must-read paranormal fantasy romance that I recommend to other readers.

Doing a deep dive into Brutus' past was the most fascinating journey, especially when the old frenemies decided to show their ethereal faces.

The ghosts in Rome are millennia deep and Charlie would have to wade headfirst into the wars and pain in order to make headway in this ancient city. When she carries a message to a vineyard matron from her late husband, Charlie is shown full force just how ancient Brutus actually is... And that's where the trouble starts. She had originally shown no preference one way or the other about that age, but as things get more and more real Charlie's unease begins to build. When gods start meddling in their budding relationship, both she and Brutus start trying to find out exactly why. And if their meddling was just that or if there was more going on...

One of my most wanted reads after reading Moss and Wolf Case Files 1!

The story is set in Rome (duh! That's the title), and that was interesting. We also get to have a better understanding of Wolf's life before. Obviously, gods are involved, and it's messy. I liked the story enough. At times, I found it a bit confusing, but it still works. Wolf is still one of my favorite werewolf characters EVER!

Pick it up if you like:
- A long stroll in Rome
- Romance (cute and relatively close door)
- Supernaturals
- Urban Fantasy

I received an e-copy from the author (perks of being on the newsletter). This review is my own and I'm leaving it voluntarily.

Charlie and Brutus on Vacation . . .

Charlotte (Charlie) Moss and boyfriend Brutus “Wolf” Nycanthus find their European vacation becomes a mess when they decide they need to get truly authentic pizza in the only place to find it… Rome. Brutus has avoided the locale for centuries, which was probably a good idea. The gods and goddesses will not make his stay pleasant as everyone seems to have their own agenda. Psychic Charlie is used to ghosts making contact with her, so when their lunch is interrupted by an older man whose ghost is asking for her to deliver a final message to his wife, she wasn’t overly upset. But maybe she should have been?

I had really enjoyed the first book No Bones About It and was excited to read the next book in the Moss and Wolf Case Files series. Ghosts of Rome did everything that I was wanting and enjoyed about the genre and the first book and improved on it. The characters had that charm that I wanted and thought it worked overall. B. Williams has a strong writing style and am excited for whatever comes next.

This one was even better than the first!

Now we have gods meddling around.

Charlie and Brutus are taking a vacation in Rome! But it is not the relaxing trip they had planned. For a bit it has “Ghost Whisperer” vibes which was cool but then morphed into more!

Multiple gods come into play but my favorite was Kerberos and I have a feeling I won’t be the only one.

Interested to see what happens in the next book!

I just finished reading the second adventure of Moss and Wolf, "Ghosts of Rome," and it was awesome. The scope and details of this book were far more elaborated, refined, and organized than those of Moss and Wolf Case Files 1. I loved the idea of how the authors amalgamated ancient mythology with modern scenarios.  Heading soon toward the third case file.

Easily a 4 & 1/2 star read for me. A fantastic deep dive into Brutus' history that led to a mythical adventure. I adored the relationship development, as well as their individual character developments. I was hooked from the start and could not put it down.

Perfect combination of warm and fuzzy moments, tense moments and action. This book had it all. Absolutely fantastic read.

This is a low-spice, paranormal romance mystery. It's a fantastic sequel that takes us deeper into Brutus’s backstory while building on the current romance between he and Charlie. When a vacation turns into anything but, can they defeat the gods and ghosts who set out against them? I can't wait to read about their next case.

I love charlotte and Brutus story - it is a really unique read. To me it feels like the writing style is more analytical than emotional but I found it quite hypnotic and didn't want to put it down. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Highly recommended!

I didn't like the story line of this one as much and the romance aspect was just too hokey for me, but I think that's more me than an issue with the book.
