Thich Nhat Hanh’s other books include the bestselling Peace Is Every Step; No Mud, No Lotus; and How to Love. Rashani Réa's other books include Nurses Cry Too and The Threshold Between Loss and Revelation. Somehow, this book of visual art was produced as an audiobook. The producer tasked with that feat almost certainly lost sleep puzzling over how to make that happen. Apparently it was managed by accentuating the quotes that accompany the zen collages, and having supplementary commentary added for the audio edition. I listened to it driving back and forth from a psychiatric hospital where a family member was experiencing critical difficulty. Having dozens of Thich Nhat Hanh quotes put into context was helpful and hopeful.
Peace and equanimity are not dependent on outer circumstances ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Rashani Rea’s Go Slowly, Breath, and Smile includes her experience with Thich Nhat Hanh over the course of her life and their friendship. His inspiration invites her to mature within and share this journey.
The book is designed with artist renderings so audio is not ideal. Despite this challenge the narrator Jeed Saddy does a great job.
This was a free loan on Audible for a limited time. I listened for the experience but would recommend for the full connection to the sharing accompany the kindle or print. If you can convert the Kindle via Speechify could listen and enjoy the art work.
A memoir of memories including Thich Nhat Hanh. The content is broken up into sections including memoir moments. Poems. Not always by the author. Art work in print. Quotes. Glimpses into how the teachings impacts day to day life.
This book is not easy to follow as it’s not moving in a particular order.
What I like is hearing first hand experiences of becoming more mindful and a part of the community.
Though I didn’t see the artwork imagine based on the descriptions they are lovely.
For audio three stars. If there was an accompanying PDF with art four star maybe five depending on how to context flows with the pictures.
The book was a fantastic intermission from the book A Nefarious Plot. If you’re looking for a read that’s chill and thoughtful this might work. It’s no longer free on Audible but is on sale for under $6, at the moment.
This book was a peaceful retreat. The messages and pictures were savored in front of the fire with a cup of tea. A beautiful gift of tranquility to oneself!
I bought this as an audiobook, having no idea that there were a lot of pictures in it. But it made for a great listen, as so many of Thich Nhat Hanh's books. I felt peace envelop me by just listening to this for a few minutes every day. I savored it over many weeks and highly recommend it.
Go Slowly, Breathe, and Smile is what I did while spending time with this book—interesting stories on the artist Rashani Rea and their interactions with Thich Nhat Hanh offered some much-needed inspiration through the comfort and thoughtfulness of Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings.
In the Foreword to this book, Joan Halifax notes that “Our culture celebrates activity. The public performance of busyness is how we demonstrate that we’re important. The more people see us as tired and over-stretched, the more they think we must be indispensable. The truth is the opposite. There is nowhere to go and nothing to do. If we just practice this, we find ourselves in each moment. This is where we discover wholeheartedness and true freedom.”
This book showcases the artistic inspiration that Rashani Réa took from various Hanh quotes. By doing so, she invites the reader to engage in their own expression. The result is a simply stated expression of the artist’s humanity.
4 stars. Another lovely entry in the Thich Nhat Hanh canon that provides wisdom and advice for mindful living. An easily accessible read that inspires us to slow down, minimise performative busyness, and lean into our own quietude. Potentially empowering.
