Well, it was time for another Brenda Richest hockey romance. Though fairly short,it was still enjoyable. Pax, our hero, is a defenceman for the Las Vegas NHL hockey team. No, not the real one has fictional team. He's secretly been in love with Kelsey, the sister of his best friend for a year now but she's been off limits. Her husband has been in a catastrophic injury, only being kept alive for over nine years since being in explosion while on duty in the armed forces. Only three months before the start of the book did Kelsey take him off life support and he passed away peacefully. So Kelsey is not emotionally ready for a relationship. In addition, Pax knows her brother and his teammate and best friend, Pike, hero of the previous book in the series, would be overwhelmingly opposed to any kind of relationship.
But when the spoiled daughter of the new team owner comes on very strongly, he has to come with a reason to reject her that won't end in his being traded. He comes up with the fact that he has a serious girlfriend and when pressed for a name, he can only come up with Kelsey. He gets the OK from Kelsey and a very upset Pike for the fake dating. But of course, what with him already in love with her and Kelsey willing to explore a real relationship, feelings develop.
This tale has a few popular tropes; dating best friend's sister, fake relationship, hockey romance, friends to lovers, single mother and I quite enjoyed it. I was also in the mood for a shorter story so it worked for me on a number of levels. I thought both Pax and Kelsey were well written characters and this was just the right story at the right time. I continue to enjoy Brenda Rotherts books and in fact started her most recent book as soon as I finished reading this book.
