“Permanence isn’t something that should be feared… or taken for granted.”
I'm going to say it right away but don't go into this book thinking/hoping it will give Criminal Minds vibes, because it won't.
I know a lot of you will have seen this book advertised as having Criminal Minds vibes, so did I, it is partially why I picked it up.
Unfortunately though Archer was as far away from Hotch as it could be.
That being said, I did enjoy this book, I enjoyed the characters and the story, but I wanted it to be better.
Keira spend her whole life looking over her shoulder, never really feeling truly safe. After being in Witness Protection for years and moving around, she finds herself trying to settle down in Wyoming. All she ever wanted was to be able to feel safe and plant some roots of her own. But her past will not let her go and won't ever stay away.
Archer, the once cop turned bodyguard, moved home four years ago after a mistake he will never let himself forget or forgive himself for. With his brothers he starts Reynolds Protective Group, an elite bodyguard agency, trying to make up for his mistakes. One day, after a unusual break in in the post office, he comes face to face with a ghost from his past. The woman he saw die, and who he thought he failed, Keira.
I appreciated that Keira wasn't waiting to be rescued, she has her own strength, is stubborn, but also filled with fear and is reluctant to trust people. Archer is extremely protective, fiercely loyal and at times a tad dramatic in my opinion.
The chemistry between them was solid, there was plenty of tension and longing.
While I enjoyed the story and the characters, I never fully became invested in them. At times it felt a bit predictable, and I wish there was more depth to everything. I wish we got more insight and just more of a look into Keira's past and how it connects to everything. The romance was good, but I just wanted their way back to each other to have more depth, I just felt like it didn't have much to it..
Overall, Archer is an entertaining romantic suspense with an engaging mystery, a protective hero, and enough danger to keep the pages turning. While it didn't completely wow me, it was a fun and enjoyable read.
